To celebrate 10 years of the English with Kirsty podcast, I'm creating a 10-part series to celebrate 10 different forms that learning can take. There will also be an online networking event for guests and listeners to come together on the podcast's birthday in July. Use the contact form further down if you want to be one of the first to receive more information about the event!Part four of the series is about how we can learn through business adventures – or intentional travel to help ourselves and our businesses.I decided to have a conversation with Jane Eggers about this because it's something that we've both done recently. Actually she inspired me!Jane is a German to English translator who lives in /Germany. For the last 3 years, she's been coming to England to attend the LinkedIn Live conference and meet up with business friends and contacts.I'm an English trainer who started off working only with German-speaking clients. This is no longer the case as my business has grown and evolved, but a lot of my work still comes from Germany. I use German for communication with some of my clients and as a bridge language in some of my language training sessions. I had the chance to go to Berlin and I took the opportunity to meet up with some of my clients and friends. I also attended my first in-person LocLunch event.Jane and I talked about what our trips taught us, how they helped us in terms of our businesses, the value of setting the agenda on your terms (it doesn't have to be a big event if that's not your thing), some practical tips, and what we plan to do now – both in terms of new ideas and new travel plans! For Jane, it was good to come back to the UK to be surrounded by English for a while. I really have to hunt for opportunities to speak German, so this emersion in the language was a great experience for me. Both of us enjoyed having the opportunity to participate in events where we could discuss business topics in a different language for a change!I also mentioned the German version of my networking for language professionals events – the first one will be this month! Check my LinkedIn profile or sign up to the newsletter from the show notes page so that you won't miss any new events!Have you been on a business adventure like this? What did you learn? I also didn't want to make case studies with these 5 challenges in case anyone had the same name as the characters. So instead, we have 5 dogs. You can see the retriever in the picture here - she struggles with perfectionism. Does anyone relate to that? The relationship of literacy and language skills and involvement with the justice system (with Dr. Shameka Stewart)

There is a disproportionate number of individuals with communication disorders and reading disabilities involved with the justice system for both children and adults.Past research suggests that more than 40% of incarcerated people have some type of nonpsychiatric disability (Berzofsky et al., 2015; Bixby et al., 2022; Thompson, 2022)Additionally, once youth are involved in the justice system, it becomes more difficult for them to access the education and therapeutic services they need. Both literacy and language skills will impact someone's ability to comprehend employee or disciplinary handbooks, to read language in legal documents, fill out job applications, and or explain past events during job interviews, when interacting with school staff or with law enforcement. Many times things are written off as “behavior problems” when the real underlying issue could be tied to language, reading, or writing. That's why I invited Dr. Shameka Stewart to episode 180 of the De Facto Leaders podcast). Dr. Shameka Stewart is an Associate Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Juvenile Forensic Speech-Language Pathologist(r). Dr. Stewart is also a special education advocate trained by the Wright's Law training center. Dr. Stewart's clinical and scholarly work specializes in Juvenile Forensics, Law Enforcement Interaction with youth with CD, child language disorders, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Her primary research focuses on the Confluence and Impact of cognitive and communication disorders on the school-to-confinement pipeline, status offenses, involvement with the criminal justice system, law enforcement interaction, and criminal recidivism in youth placed at-risk for delinquency and crime (especially Black and Brown youth from under-resourced areas). Dr. Stewart is also a clinically certified and licensed speech-language pathologist and is licensed to practice in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and multiple other states. Through her work, Dr. Stewart has created cutting edge social justice and juvenile justice specialty courses for graduate CSD students, nationally known training programs for law enforcement and legal counsel, and national and international CE workshops and training for licensed SLP clinicians, students, and families of children with special needs. This episode is part of the National Literacy Month series of podcasts, presented in partnership between the Be Podcast Network and Reading Is Fundamental (RIF).In this conversation, we discuss:✅The relationship between reading challenges and the school-to-confinement pipeline.✅Why “behavior problems” could be related to language processing, reading, or writing challenges.✅When youth become involved with the justice system, how do they get access to special education services (including language therapy)? ✅“They should know better”: Why we can't assume kids comprehend language in the school discipline handbook. ✅A case for continuing direct language therapy in high school (and why therapists need support from school leaders in making this happen). You can connect with Dr. Stewart on her website here: www.juvforensicslp.comConnect with her on Instagram @drjuvenile_forensicslpJoin her Facebook group SLPs 4 Juvenile Justice here. They discuss Jack's insights into Swedish history, internet culture, and the origins of platforms like The Pirate Bay. Despite being late to modernize compared to other European nations, Sweden developed a strong engineering and industrial focus, fostering a culture of innovation that paved the way for companies like Spotify.Pirate Bay and Sweden's Digital Pioneers: The discussion touches on how Sweden's advanced internet infrastructure and highly connected population led to projects like The Pirate Bay. Jack notes that Sweden's conformity to trends and its neophilic culture contributed to the rise of such platforms, where digital piracy was once a mainstream practice, reflecting a larger cultural shift in media consumption. The Conformity Paradox in Sweden: A key theme in the episode is Sweden's paradoxical approach to conformity, where at a national level, the country made nonconformist decisions, such as its unique COVID-19 strategy. Jack explains this as a deeper form of conformity to long-standing institutional trust, showing that Swedish society's adherence to institutional plans is rooted in a high level of trust in central authority.Decentralized Technology and Vaporware: Jack introduces the concept of Vaporware, a project aimed at building decentralized technologies to provide users with greater control over their data. He explains that Vaporware is a company built on Plunder, an alternative to Urbit, and emphasizes how these technologies aim to solve current issues related to internet privacy, data ownership, and freedom.Solid-State Interpreter for Future-Proof Computing: One of the most technical insights revolves around the solid-state interpreter, which Jack describes as a combination of a virtual machine and a database. It allows for the creation of a computing environment where code and data can be stored and updated indefinitely, ensuring that the programs and data remain functional and accessible long into the future, unlike current software systems.Reputation Systems and Social Trust: Jack challenges traditional reputation systems, advocating for a more nuanced, context-specific method of evaluating trust in online interactions. He suggests that symbols or markers should be used to indicate trustworthiness based on context, rather than relying on simple upvotes or scores, which can be gamed and lead to dystopian outcomes.Global Institutional Collapse and the Need for New Systems: Both Stewart and Jack reflect on the global decline of traditional institutions, with welfare states and centralized governance models failing to meet modern needs. They emphasize the importance of rethinking political and economic systems to adapt to the changing technological landscape, drawing parallels between Sweden's past successes and the broader need for innovative, decentralized solutions globally.

The “science of reading” is trending; but in order for professionals to engage in effective instruction, they need to understand that literacy also includes spelling and writing.Writing, spelling, and reading are interconnected, and the growing body of research continues to show us that these skills need to be taught explicitly. That's why I invited Dr. Jan Wasowicz to episode 176 of the De Facto Leaders podcast to discuss the Language Literacy Network (Link here: https://learningbydesign.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/TLLN_11x8.5.pdf); a framework she's created to help professionals better understand the connections between reading, writing, spelling, and language. Dr. Jan Wasowicz has more than 40 years of experience as a speech-language, literacy, and learning specialist working with students in a variety of educational settings, including public schools, Head Start programs, and private practice. Dr. Wasowicz is frequently invited to speak about best practices in literacy assessment and instruction and has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses, holding faculty positions at Northwestern University, Elmhurst College, Rush–Presbyterian–St. Luke's Medical Center, and Governors State University. She is the founder, president and CEO of SPELL-Links | Learning By Design, Inc., and she maintains a small private practice in IL via tele-practice and in FL serving students with oral and written language disorders. This episode is part of a partnership that's happening between the BEpodcast network (Link here: https://bepodcast.network/) and Reading is Fundamental (RIF) (Link here: https://www.rif.org) in September for National Literacy Month. In this conversation, we discuss:✅Do we need a “writing rope” to supplement the “reading rope”? She then transitioned to subbing classes, seizing opportunities, and gradually building her teaching career. Rini shares her journey of discovering yoga in 2017 in Singapore, initially as a physical practice that positively transformed her reactions and life balance, especially during COVID-19. Story time! (How fitting for today's topic of language skills and literature?) It was the very first day of our homeschooling journey. The kids and I cracked open the Language Arts curriculum I'd chosen… I hadn't thought to pre-screen the material (rookie mistake) and I began to read the instructions out loud: “Circle all the prepositions.” Horrified, my kids and I stared at each other blankly and we all wanted to cry. “A prepo-what???”  I had pulled my kids out of public school, and coming from public school myself, none of us knew what in the world a preposition was.  I was the mom. I was the teacher. I was supposed to be leading this whole thing and I didn't even know what a preposition was!? I felt like a failure and I quickly realized that curriculum was NOT going to work for us.  I began desperately searching for an effective way to teach my kids language skills. Although my kids are quick learners, I knew this process was going to take divine intervention, because grammar seemed difficult to understand, and to teach. No one was inspired to write, nor did we have any kind of a system in place for learning how to do it well.  Enter the unsung hero: Mr. Andrew Pudewa, founder of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW).  Mr. Pudewa had a system in place (“Structure and Style for Students”) that included easy-to-use videos, pre-selected source texts and key word outlines. On top of that, his charming personality stole the hearts of my kids and if I'm being honest, it stole my heart too.    Mr. Pudewa's method for helping homeschool families thrive was unlike anything I'd seen before. My kids became strong, inspired writers (and grammar wizards). Most importantly though, they fell in love with reading and writing and thinking.  When I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Pudewa in person, I quickly realized how authentic, engaging and witty he was. I invited him to join me on the podcast and he graciously agreed to share his time and expertise.  So, today you are in for an absolute treat! You can head to the podcast now to take in a conversation that is full of tips to help you cultivate language skills in your homeschool. Mr. Pudewa is sharing book recommendations, encouragement for homeschooling moms, one of his famous jokes and so much more!  Trust me when I say… this is a don't miss episode! God designed receptive and expressive language to work together in a child's learning. The child takes in and absorbs ideas and knowledge then gives them forth, expressing them through his own unique voice by choosing and combining words in a way all his own. This is why notebooking is so valuable and essential. It gives opportunity to strengthen expressive language skills which are vital to a child's growth in every area. In this episode, Shiela explores the benefits of notebooking and how through written and visual narration, a child finds his voice and builds his confidence to grow into and express the unique person God made him to be. She gives practical, creative ideas for notebooking through the homeschool subjects and how this age old methodology can bring joy to your children's homeschool days.
