Too Opinionated Interview: Little House on the Prairie featuring Dean Butler and Alison Arngrim

Today on a special Too Opinionated we celebrate fifty years of Little House on the Prairie and the announcement of a new Netflix adaption by chatting with cast members Dean Butler and Alison Arngrim.    TV fans around the world remember Arngrim as Nellie Oleson, the acid-tongued hellcat – declared “TV history's #1 one bitch” by Vanity Fair – who tormented pure, sweet Laura Ingalls for seven years on “Little House on the Prairie.” In Confessions of a Prairie B*tch, Arngrim offers a riotous evening of anecdotes, stand-up comedy, and multimedia content about life as the scorned yet beloved devious pre-teen, complete with frilly petticoats and curls. The one-woman stage show made its debut in New York City in 2002 and has since become a global sensation, drawing packed houses in the U.S. and abroad. The hit show spawned Arngrim's record breaking New York Times Best Selling memoir, similarly titled "Confessions of a Prairie B*tch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated" (Harper Collins).  Cast at twenty-two years old, Butler had no idea of the lasting impact being cast in Little House on the Prairie would have on him. Having previously starred in Judy Blume's Forever with Stephanie Zimbalist, Butler was fresh- faced and naïve to Hollywood, eager to make his mark. He found his home in the Prairie and embraced his fellow cast members as family. Butler's passion for honest-to-goodness entertainment began in the Prairie and followed him throughout his rich career of acting, producing, and directing. PRAIRIE MAN: My Little House Life & Beyond (on sale June 25, 2024; HC, $28.00) by Dean Butler shares the behind- the-scenes of Little House on the Prairie on a heartfelt journey of “good luck, good television, and the very good— if gloriously imperfect—people who made it so.” Cast as Almanzo, Laura Ingalls' starring love interest, Butler captured the enduring affection of fans and co-stars alike. With a foreword from Melissa Gilbert (Laura) and Alison Arngrim (Nellie), this uplifting memoir follows Butler's journey from childhood to the Prairie and beyond. Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) -Episode 479 Confessions of a Crappy Christian with Blake Guichet         Confessions of a Crappy Christian Real-Life Talk about All the Things Christians Aren't Sure We're Supposed to Say—and Why They Matter to God  Why does it so often feel like Christians can't talk about the real, hard  stuff in life? We know our lives should reflect Jesus; what He did and said,  and how He interacted with others. But if we're being honest, there are  days when we face tough, confusing things that can make us feel, well,  very not like Jesus. As our culture moves further from truth and grace, Christians are burned- out, isolated, and unsure of where to turn for sound biblical advice that applies to their everyday struggles. If you've ever felt this way or wished someone would talk about things like forgiveness, mental health, broken friendships, redirected dreams, sex, facts versus feelings, church hurt, rest, weakness, healing, and more in honest, down-to-earth terms while sticking to what Scripture has to say about them, you've come to the right place. Confessions of a Crappy Christian is for you if you: ● have ever thought you're too messed up for church ● feel exhausted and alone in your struggles ● think you need to complete a checklist before God will love you ● need a friend who cares about you too much to let you stay stuck With honesty and vulnerability, Blake Guichet, host of the popular podcast Confessions of a Crappy Christian, helps us embrace the truth that we can't do it all perfectly and gives us the wisdom, guidance, and hope to move from “crappy” Christian into a freer and fuller walk with Christ. In Confessions of a Crappy Christian, Blake Guichet offers an honest and transparent approach to navigating the things we aren't sure we're allowed to talk about as Christians and helps us discover why God cares about them and us. Invites anyone raised in the church, on the fringes of the church, or impacted by church culture to explore what the Bible really says, regardless of whether you fit into the “Christian mold.” Befriends the person who feels alone in their struggles, as she humbly and vulnerably walks  alongside them.  Addresses today's trend of hating on the Church with no plan to do anything about it. What if there  was someone who could be honest about some of the issues within Christianity, while  simultaneously offering hope and reminding them that God is still so good?  “The world doesn't need more perfectly presentable Christians. It needs people who love Jesus and  are willing to show up and say, ‘I can't do anything on my own. There is nothing good in me apart from  Christ, but with Him, I am unstoppable. With Him, I am more than enough and He empowers my every  effort,'” says Guichet.   ABOUT THE AUTHOR Blake Guichet is a writer and founder of the Crappy Christian Co., which aims to teach women how to use their God-given gifts for the Kingdom. "An award-winning USA Today columnist makes the case for how a Jesus freed from religion and politics meets the need for meaning and purpose in secular America. Tom Krattenmaker is part of a growing conversation centered at Yale University that acknowledges—and seeks to address—the abiding need for meaning and inspiration in post-religious America. What, they ask, gives a life meaning? What constitutes a life well led? In Confessions of a Secular Jesus Follower, Krattenmaker shares his surprising conclusion about where input and inspiration might best be found: in the figure of Jesus. And Jesus, not only as a good example and teacher, but Jesus as the primary guide for one's life. Drawing on sociological research, personal experience, and insights from fifteen years studying and writing on religion in American public life, Krattenmaker shows that in Jesus, nonreligious people like himself can find unique and compelling wisdom on how to honor the humanity in ourselves and others, how to build more peaceful lives, how generosity can help people and communities create more abundance, how to break free from self-defeating behaviors, and how to tip the scales toward justice. In a time when more people than ever are identifying as atheist or agnostic, Confessions of a Secular Jesus Follower is a groundbreaking and compelling work that rediscovers Jesus--and our own best selves--for the world of today." “And men go abroad to admire the heights of mountains, the mighty waves of the sea, the broad tides of rivers, the compass of the ocean, and the circuits of the stars,” wrote St. Augustine of Hippo in his Confessions, “yet [they] pass over the mystery of themselves without a thought.” In Confessions, Augustine explores how for years he passed over the mystery of his own self until he began actively exploring that mystery. Why do we behave as we do? What's the appeal of sin? What's the appeal of holiness? Why are we so restless? What is truth? In this fourth lecture in the distance learning course "Into the Lenten Desert: Learning to Pray with the Medieval Masters," Dr. Baxter explores “Augustine's Restless Heart and the Inward Turn: What Augustine Learned from the Pagans.”

A 2017 Best Spoken Word Album Grammy Nominee! Confessions of a Serial Songwriter is an amusing and poignant memoir about songwriter Shelly Peiken's journey from young girl falling under the spell of magical songs to working professional songwriter writing hits of her own. It's about growing up, the creative process – the highs and the lows, the conflicts that arise between motherhood and career success, the divas and schemers, but also the talented and remarkable people she's found along the way. It's filled with stories and step-by-step advice about the songwriting process, especially collaboration. And it's about the challenge of staying relevant in a rapidly changing and youth-driven world. As Shelly so eloquently states in Confessions of a Serial Songwriter: “If I had to come up with one X factor that I could cite as a characteristic most hit songs have in common (and this excludes hit songs that are put forth by an already well-oiled machine...that is, a recording artist who has so much notoriety and momentum that just about anything he or she releases, as long as it's 'pretty good ' will have a decent shot at succeeding), I would say it would be: A universal sentiment in a unique frame.” Peiken has tapped the universal sentiment again and again; her songs have been recorded by such artists as Christina Aguilera, Natalie Cole, Selena Gomez, Celine Dion, the Pretenders, and others. In Confessions of a Serial Songwriter, she pulls the curtain back on the music business from the perspective of a behind-the-scenes hit creator and shares invaluable insight into the craft of songwriting.

From Economic Hit Man (EHM), to CEO of an alternative energy company, to a student and then teacher of indigenous cultures and shamanism, to author of the book that exposed the world of international intrigue and corruption he saw as an EHM, John Perkins has experienced many different sides of life.   As an EHM, John’s job was to convince Third World countries to accept enormous, larger than necessary loans for infrastructure development and to guarantee that the development projects were contracted to U.S. corporations—such as Halliburton and Bechtel. Once the countries were saddled with huge debts, the U.S. government was able to control the economies of those countries and ensure that their resources, such as oil, were channeled through the United States.   During the 1990s and into the new millennium, John remained silent about his activities as an EHM and continued to receive lucrative corporate consulting fees in return.   Then came September 11, 2001.    The events of that day convinced John to ignore the threats and bribes, and write Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. He believed he had a responsibility to share his knowledge about the role the U.S. government, multinational “aid” organizations, and corporations have played in bringing the world to a place where such an event could occur.    John wanted to expose the fact that Economic Hit Men are more ubiquitous today than ever before. He felt he owed this to his country, his daughter, and to all the people around the world who suffer because of the work he and his peers have done. In Confessions of an Economic Hit Man John describes the dangerous path the United States is taking as it moves away from the original ideals of the American republic and into a quest for global empire.   Through his study of shamanism, shapeshifting, and prophesy John has come to believe now is a time of opportunity for great change. It is time to transform from the social and economic models of greed and destruction into a just, sustainable world for all beings.   Author of the new release "The New Confessions of an Economic Hitman" now available on Amazon and all major retailers.   Get The Book Here: https://www.amazon.com/New-Confessions-Economic-Hit-Man/dp/B019G3T20U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1506299363&sr=8-1&keywords=the+new+confessions+of+an+economic+hitman   John’s Website: http://www.johnperkins.org   FB: https://www.facebook.com/johnperkinsauthor/   Twitter: https://twitter.com/economic_hitman   Dream change: https://www.dreamchange.org/   TED Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btF6nKHo2i0&t=3s   Outro song: Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fahr069-fzE   If you enjoy this show: ★★★★★ Please Leave a 5-Star Rating and Review on iTunes:https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/mikeadelic/id1109139637?mt=2 Support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month. https://www.patreon.com/mikebranc My website: https://mikebranc.com/ Thank You

By exploring 19th century Russia’s multi-confessional landscape and the spaces in which Jewish men and women encountered those of other religious communities, Schainker uses the lens of conversion to explore Jewish and Russian Orthodox anxieties over group boundaries and the extent to which converts, far from being exiles within their Jewish communities, occupied sustained, liminal positions that attracted the interests of Jews, Christians, and Russian state officials. As you spend more time working in one role, organization, or field, it can become easy to lose perspective on how your work is similar or different from that being done by people in other positions, places, and industries. How are you asked to spend your time? How are you given feedback? How are you evaluated? Do your workplace norms make any sense? What would an outsider say about them? Because so many teachers enter the profession right out of college and either spend their entire careers in schools or leave within a few years, they are not often in the position to hear or offer these kinds of school critiques. In Confessions of a Bad Teacher: The Shocking Truth from the Frontline of American Public Education (Sourcebooks, 2013), John Owens describes his frustrations upon leaving the publishing industry after 30 years and pursuing a second career teaching high school English in a New York City public school at the height of the education reform movement. In "Confessions of a Magazine Junkie", I open with my fondest memories of the first time I fell in love with a magazine. I also speak with Abigail Schreiber of Paper Magazine on numerous topics including her opinions regarding the current state of print and online publications. Produced by Latecia Joiner
