We stay in 1988 for a classic by a band who wasn't afraid to skew pop: vocal clinicians Restless Heart. It's their signature hit: "The Bluest Eyes in Texas". Come for the syncopated harmony, stay for the driving percussion. But how does the overlay of those two elements illustrate the haunted tedium of this song's message?

Send us your feedback — we're listeningPsalm 91:1 — Jesus, Draw My Restless Heart Into the Shelter of Your Presence TonightWelcome to Daily Prayer with Reverend Ben Cooper, broadcasting from London and reaching listeners across Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. As a new day quietly begins, we pause together and bring our hearts before Jesus, seeking the shelter and peace that only His presence can give. Psalm 91:1 (NIV) reminds us: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 23 also reassures us that the Lord is our shepherd, leading us gently beside quiet waters and restoring our souls when our hearts grow weary. Even in the stillness of the midnight hour, God's care remains constant and faithful. Lord Jesus, in this quiet moment we come to You. The day behind us may have been heavy, and the hours ahead may carry unknowns, but Your Word reminds us that those who dwell in Your shelter will find rest. Draw every anxious heart into Your presence tonight. Let every listener know that they are not alone, that Your peace surrounds them like a covering. Jesus, calm the restless thoughts that keep many awake in the night. Replace worry with quiet trust, and let Your presence settle over every home where this prayer is heard. Guide us through the darkness and lead us safely toward the light of a new morning. Jesús, trae Tu paz a cada corazón que escucha esta oración en esta hora tranquila. Jesus, traz a Tua paz para cada coração que ora agora nesta madrugada. Lord, we place this new day into Your hands. Keep us under the shelter of Your presence and lead us forward in peace. Send us your feedback — we're listeningPsalm 91:1 — Jesus, Gather My Restless Heart Into Your Midnight Shelter and Quiet the Storms That Follow Me Into the Dark Welcome to Daily Prayer with Reverend Ben Cooper, live from London — reaching Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Chile. Psalm 91:1 (NIV): “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Salmo 91:1 “Aquele que habita no abrigo do Altíssimo descansará à sombra do Todo-Poderoso.” “The Lord is my Shepherd.” “O Senhor é o meu Pastor.” “El Señor es mi Pastor.” John 14:27 (NIV): “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” João 14:27 “Deixo-lhes a paz; a Minha paz lhes dou. Não a dou como o mundo a dá. Não se perturbe o seu coração, nem tenham medo.” Jesus, as midnight settles over the quiet hours of this new day, I come to You with the thoughts that still move through my heart. Some carry the weight of yesterday, others carry questions about tomorrow. Yet Your Word promises that whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will find rest beneath Your shadow. So tonight I come close to You, Senhor Jesus. Gather my restless heart. Quiet the storms that sometimes rise in the silence of the night. Let Your presence become the shelter that surrounds my mind and my breathing. Where worry begins to form, speak Your peace. Where fear tries to whisper, bring Your calm. Guard my thoughts, proteger meu coração, and let Your gentle presence guide me into rest. Jesús, Tú eres mi refugio, mi descanso, mi paz en la noche. You are my Shepherd, leading me even when the road ahead is hidden in darkness. Guide me beside still waters tonight. Restore what is tired within me. Renew the strength that tomorrow will require. Place Your protection around this home. Guard the doors, guard the rooms, and guard the quiet moments of sleep that restore the body and mind. Send Your angels, as Your Word promises, to watch through these hours of rest. Let no fear settle here. Let no shadow disturb the peace that You are building. Jesus, I entrust tomorrow into Your hands. Walk with me through every moment that waits ahead. Give wisdom where decisions must be made and courage where strength will be needed. Tonight I rest beneath Your covering. Tonight my heart finds shelter. Tonight Your peace carries me safely into the new day that begins. In this quiet hour, draw us into Your shelter. Let Your nearness soften the restlessness we feel in the deepest parts of our heart. Aquieta o coração que não encontra descanso, and let Your peace begin to settle gently over the places that feel unsettled or troubled. For the listener lying awake with tension in their chest, bring ease. For the one replaying conversations or worries, slow their thoughts with Your calm. For the person whose body is tired but whose mind refuses to settle, let Your presence steady their breathing and quiet their spirit. Jesus, You offer not the world's fragile peace, but a peace that reaches into the heart, into the emotions, into the hidden anxieties that only appear when midnight comes. Tonight, we rest in that promise. As we breathe, let Your shadow become our covering — the safe, quiet place where fear cannot lead and worry cannot dominate. Let Your shelter become not just a biblical idea, but an emotional refuge right now, in this moment. Traz paz ao coração que carrega o peso do dia, reminding us that we do not have to earn rest; You give it freely. You hold us as we are, not as we think we should be. You see us in the quiet of the night and call us to breathe again. Jesus, we surrender every racing thought, every fear of tomorrow, every pressure we carried too far into the night. Draw us near. Hold our restless hearts. Cover us with the peace that only You can give. Are you succeeding outwardly while failing inwardly? It is easy to lead a church or mentor others while harbouring a restless, offended heart that resents God's mercy. In this powerful lesson on Jonah Chapter 4, Rev Paul Jeyachandran challenges Christian leaders to examine the "three movements of the heart"—from being offended and obstructed to becoming fully opened and offered to God. By addressing primal wounds and the cynicism that darkens the mind, this sermon provides essential training for pastors and leaders seeking genuine spiritual growth. Learn to use the "four T's" of biblical narrative—Tone, Tension, Twist, and Theology—to find transformative truth in scripture. Don't let an overcrowded soul or hidden offence paralyse your will. The second challenge, he says, is digital education—how to humanize online spaces and avoid becoming prisoners of the algorithm.Together, Bobby and Katie unpack what it means to raise children, strengthen marriages, and live as disciples in a world ruled by screens. They explore practical ways to cultivate silence, self-awareness, and authentic relationships while using technology with wisdom and virtue. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by social media, distracted by your phone, or unsure how to guide your family in the digital age—this episode will help you reclaim your attention, renew your heart, and rediscover your purpose in Christ.https://linktr.ee/bobbyfred85

When he was 7 years old, a friend's father was in the entertainment business. Hanging out at rehearsals and on the tour buses sold Matt on the idea of being a musician, or at the very least, a drummer. All this lead to spending his high school years at Fort Hayes vocational school for music and Capital University Conservatory of Music for college studying under drum instructor Bob Breithaupt. The musical diversity in Columbus gave Matt the chance to play with many great players and learning many different styles – from Big Band (Vaughn Weister's Famous Jazz Orchestra) and Brazilian to Afro-Cuban and Fusion. All the while, he was doing his share of gigs with original rock bands and top 40 bands. Matt moved to Nashville in the summer of 1999. Working as a freelance drummer based in Nashville has taken him to all 50 states in the U.S. and most of Canada, as well as overseas to Europe, Asia, The Middle East and The Caribbean. As well as the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Matt has performed in great local venues like the Ryman Auditorium, Mercy Lounge, 3rd and Lindsley, The 5 Spot, The Sutler, The Basement, The Wildhorse Saloon, and many clubs on lower Broadway.  Matt has toured both regionally and nationally, with the Adam and Shannon Wright, Mark Selby, Eddy Raven, Billy Dean, Stephen Simmons, Three Lane, Whiskey Cash & Roses, Michelle Wright - (throughout Canada), Julie Roberts, and The Frontmen of Country which is Larry Stewart of Restless Heart, Richie McDonald of Lonestar, Tim Rushlow of Little Texas. From 2009 to 2017 Matt was the full time drummer for the band Savannah Jack. He played percussion on their first studio record in 2010 opposite Steve Ferrone on drums. For their second studio record in 2015, Matt was the drumset and percussion player in the studio. In the studio, Matt has had the pleasure of working with talented producers including Eric Fritsch, Teddy Morgan, Jim Reilley and Brent Maher. Artist he's recorded with in the studio have included Sheryl Crow, legendary songwriter Buzz Cason and actor Kevin Costner. In 2015, Matt started a podcast for drummers called "Working Drummer", an interview based podcast that maintains a focus on the drummer that makes a living at his or her craft. We had the pleasure of interviewing Capstan over Zoom video! To make a mosaic, tiny pieces interlock as a larger picture. In similar fashion, distinct elements coalesce as one in Capstan. The Florida quintet—Anthony Demario [vocals], Joe Mabry [guitar], Harrison Borman [guitar], Andrew “Boz” Bozymowski [bass, vocals], and Scott Fisher [drums]—merge metallic precision with pit-splitting hardcore grooves and the kind of hooks you can't shake. After amassing tens of millions of streams and earning acclaim from the likes of KERRANG! and many more, the group paint a definitive body of work on their aptly titled third full-length offering, The Mosaic [Fearless Records].  Since 2015, Capstan have progressed with each subsequent move. Following Seasonal Depression [2015] and  In The Wake of  Our Discord [2018], they made waves with their full-length debut, Restless Heart, Keep Running, in 2019. Among many standouts, “Stars Before The Sun” racked up over 5.1 million Spotify streams followed by “We'll Always Have Paris” with 2.5 million Spotify streams. 2021 saw them level up again with Separate. Right out of the gate, KERRANG! rated it “4-out-of-5 stars” and proclaimed, “This is Capstan at full strength and it's a second outing to be proud of.” They toured with the likes of Trash Boat, Doll Skin, Silverstein, and many more.  This time around, the boys opted to self-produce, engineer, and record what would become The Mosaic. At the same time, they collectively absorbed the spirit of a more optimistic season. As with any mosaic worth pondering, this one might just leave you uplifted. We want to hear from you! Though Larry Stewart was exposed to music early on, it was sports that initially captured his attention. After receiving a baseball scholarship to Nashville's Belmont College, Larry, whose father had passed away from a heart condition, found music as a way to close the gap he was feeling without his dad.“In some ways, I moved to Nashville to live out my father's dream,” admits Larry Stewart of what was to become his musical destiny. “When I got here, there were all kinds of people who valued musical talent–and I found myself slowly fitting into the music business.”“The way I act is very normal. I just do what I do and let it go at that,” explains the soft-spoken vocalist. “It comes from growing up in a small town where the people respected each other and looked after each other. The values I learned there pretty much shape the way I look at the world around me.“I had a pretty basic childhood. My parents loved me and I was around music from the first day I remember. My dad was a great singer and as I got older, I played piano for him, but I also played a lot of sports. They gave me support with whatever I did. They taught me lessons and gave me the tools to seek my dreams.”“Being in Restless Heart showed me how powerful music can be,” Stewart says, defining his motivations. “I always knew how much it moved me–and there I saw it did the same thing to other people. To me, you need to sing songs for more than yourself. Making records is a privilege. I think you need to find songs that might give people a little insight into their own lives. Or give them words they may not have to tell the people they care for how they're feeling.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

He is a proud native of Vian, Oklahoma, and has always stayed true to his roots, even during his 15-year stint in Nashville, TN. Heath's journey began on the Rockin' W Ranch, where he serenaded a captive audience of Hereford cows and honed his musical talents. Despite early shyness, Heath's passion for music blossomed, leading him to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Business Management at Northeastern State University before delving into a unique Country Music degree program at South Plains College. Upon graduation, Heath embarked on the most significant journey of his life – the move to Nashville. There, he co-founded Ricochet, a band that skyrocketed to success with chart-topping hits and prestigious awards, including the New Vocal Group of the Year from the Academy of Country Music and several other CMA and ACM nominations. Top 10 hits (and even a multi-week #1) on the Billboard charts were no stranger to Heath and his band, Ricochet. During their highest point, Heath and Ricochet made numerous television appearances on Country Music Awards shows (as performers, presenters, and nominees), the Grand Ole Opry, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In 2011, Heath received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing lead vocals for Restless Heart, a band he admired since childhood. Despite his bustling career, Heath's proudest achievement remains his son, Dustin Heath, and the cherished moments they share on the family ranch.Website: https://ricochetonline.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RicochetFanPage/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/officialricochetband/www.GaryScottThomas.com

Best of Breakpoint: The Restless Heart of Generation Z and the Mental Health Crisis

The BreakPoint Podcast

Saint Augustine famously observed that the human heart is restless until its rest is found in God. That applies not only to individuals but also to cultures and entire generations. Practically speaking, this “restlessness” can take many forms, including an unprecedented mental health crisis.  The recent and much talked about report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes precisely that. As a CDC spokeswoman bluntly stated, “young people”—especially young women—“are in crisis.” An article in The New York Times summarized, “Nearly three in five teenage girls felt persistent sadness in 2021 … and one in three girls seriously considered attempting suicide.” Jonathan Haidt, author of The Coddling of the American Mind, painted an even starker picture: “We are now 11 years into the largest epidemic of adolescent mental illness ever recorded.”  The timing of this unprecedented outbreak of anxiety, depression and other mental health problems, Haidt points out, corresponds suspiciously with the rise of smartphones and social media apps. This technology led to a culture-wide exchange of what he calls a “play-based childhood” for a “screen-based” one. That exchange likely helped create a generation with fragile psyches unable to deal with life's challenges.   A reason that teen girls are especially hard-hit in this crisis is they spend more time on social media platforms and websites that engender social and body anxiety. However, political views also predict psychological issues. Using Pew Research's American Trends Panel, Haidt demonstrates that liberal leanings predict the worst mental health outcomes. In fact, a majority of self-identified progressive women in Generation Z report that they have been diagnosed with a mental health condition.   Age, sex, and politics are not the only predictors of trouble. Using the same set of data, political scientist and pastor Ryan Burge suggests that religious commitment is another important factor. Those who rarely or never attend religious services suffer worse mental health than those who attend regularly or weekly.   Altogether, and controlling for economics and education, Americans under 25 are doing very badly when it comes to mental health. Those suffering the worst are young, female, liberal, and secular. For them, brokenness is, incredibly, the norm.   On the other hand, the apparent insulating effect of religious faith and conservative philosophy is fascinating. Highly religious people are, in fact, more likely than their secular peers to describe themselves as “very happy.” One explanation for this is the proven positive social effects of religious belonging, including higher occurrences of stable, loving family relationships. For example, in 2020, the Institute for Family Studies reported that those who attend church regularly are more likely to get married than their nonreligious neighbors and less likely to divorce.  Still, it's worth considering whether the social benefits of religious commitment have something to do with the belief itself. Does an active faith in God reduce the impact of the mental health crisis on young people? Does a lack of religious faith leave others more vulnerable to it?   Though a tough question to answer via social science, St. Augustine would say “yes.” Despite his lack of familiarity with Gen Z, he would speak of their “restless hearts” seeking in politics, gender identity, and self-expression what can only be found in a relationship with our Maker.  In the face of Gen Z's mental health crisis, it is the Gospel and not gloom that should motivate and inform us. As blogger and author Samuel James pointed out on Twitter, mentally broken young people may be primed to hear the truth: “Evangelicals need to disabuse themselves of the idea that Gen-Z is a wholly unreachable mass of buffered selves. The mental health crisis may cut right through secularization like butter.”   God has made us for Himself. The kind of postmodern individualism that Gen Z was raised with will never deliver on its promises. This mental health crisis is a spiritual crisis. We have the opportunity to introduce a generation of restless hearts to the One able to deliver on His promises to bring rest to their souls.  This Breakpoint was co-authored by Shane Morris.
