In part three of his series on the unifications of Germany and Italy, Dan talks about the turbulent 1850s and early 60s. In Germany, this is a time of mass industrialization. With the regional economy growing at a record pace, Prussia and Austria engage in saber-rattling diplomacy over the future of the German Confederation.   Meanwhile, the new King of Piedmont-Sardinia, Victor Emmanuel II, aims to do what his father could not: conquer all of Italy. Taking advantage of Austrian weakness – and a burgeoning alliance with France – he and three other men will engineer a revolution that unites the Apennine Peninsula for the first time since the Roman Empire.   TABLE OF CONTENTS: Chapter One: The German Question – 00:04:22 Chapter Two: The Erfurt Union – 00:30:15 Chapter Three: The (Austrian) Empire Strikes Back – 00:42:24 Chapter Four: Enter Bismarck – 01:03:59 Chapter Five: Goodbye, Friedrich Wilhelm – 01:32:59 Chapter Six: Repression in Lombardy – 01:41:19 Chapter Seven: Enter Camillo Cavour – 01:51:20 Chapter Eight: Enter Victor Emmanuel – 02:04:32 Chapter Nine: The Crimean War – 02:17:48 Chapter Ten: Engineering a Revolution – 02:39:34 Chapter Eleven: The War for Northern Italy – 03:05:02 Chapter Twelve: The Expedition of the Thousand – 03:34:34 Chapter Thirteen: The Dictator of Sicily – 04:14:24 Chapter Fourteen: The Conquest of Southern Italy – 04:28:49 Chapter Fifteen: The Proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy – 04:51:04 Chapter Sixteen: Rome and the Risorgimento – 05:13:43   SUBSCRIBE TO RELEVANT HISTORY, AND NEVER MISS AN EPISODE! This episode of the Real Life in Italy is answering the question: who the hell were Garibaldi and Cavour anyway? These names are everywhere we look in Italy. It's because these two characters were key players in the Italian Unification - the Risorgimento. There's a long, long history lesson behind that, but today, let's take it easy and just get to know your new Italian (er or are they French?) friends: Giuseppe Garibaldi and Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour. I'm joined by fellow American in Italy Verity Pryor-Harden, who just like you was curious about who these men were and what their deal was. Well I'm here to tell you. Disclaimer, in case you had any doubt: I am far from a historian, I am not an expert. And I am WELL aware the stories of the Risorgimento, Garibaldi, and Cavour go far beyond this 101. I'm just another expat in Italy, trying to understand Italian culture and history, and make sense of life in Italy. An Italian American with Confederates in the famiglia? The branches of our family trees often contain mysteries and secrets that are lost until future generations decide to investigate them. This is precisely the case with this week's episode as we talk with Joe Elia, one of the delegates to the inaugural Italian American Future Leaders Conference. Joe explains that during his genealogical sleuthing, he discovered that one of his ancestors was a post-Unification Bourbon prisoner of war who was sent to serve with the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Our Bourbon history expert, Lou Mendola, joins us to help Joe decipher his family's lore, as well as explain how Bourbon soldiers came to serve in our nation's bloodiest war. We discuss how there's more to Italian Unification than what we've learned in school and why it is necessary to look at any episode in history from every angle. We also discuss why preserving family history is important and how we can solve the mysteries hidden in our own family trees that are waiting to be discovered. Join us as we uncover a mystery that will hopefully inspire you to do some sleuthing in your own family history!

Join me, as we take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactItalian unification is also known as the Risorgimento meaning "Resurgence", was the 19th-century political and social movement that resulted in the consolidation of different states of the Italian Peninsula into a single state, the Kingdom of Italy. The unification process was precipitated by the revolutions of 1848 and reached completion in 1871 when Rome was officially designated the capital of the Kingdom of Italy.About StevenSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. If any language proves that there’s room at the linguistic table for everyone... it’s Italian! This week, we continue our examination of the languages of Italy as we take a closer look at her many Regional Languages and Dialects, including the unique blend of Italian and English spoken by Italian Americans through the generations. We’ll discus the state of Italy’s diverse Regional Languages, both before and after Italian Unification, as well as their contemporary renaissance thanks to social media. Plus we’ll explore the rich patrimonies of Sicilian poetry and Neapolitan music and how both these forms, and many others, are vehicles for linguistic survival. We’ll focus on Italy’s constitutional commitments to protect her linguistic minorities, and even see some of the enduring aspects of “Italianness” in Italy’s former colony Eritrea. Heading back to the United States, we talk about how the Italian American dialect changes depending on geographic location and how certain Italian American-born words have cemented themselves as part of the American vernacular. And, for our weekly off topic ramble, we’ll discuss Italian clothing culture and how it is seen as a source of identity and pride in the Italian American community, how this translates back across the ocean in the Motherland.

Correction from https://www.youtube.com/user/jlarson87: Pope Pius XI left the Vatican incognito in 1948, citing Italian Unification riots as the reason. However, this is impossible as he died in 1939 and Italian unification happened in in the mid 1800's. I think you're referring to a riot that happened in the 1840's where Pope Pius IX left the Vatican in a similar disguise.

Talking History: The Italian Unification

In the space of a single year, Italy will change forever, emerging from the Second War of Italian Unification with an entirely new political landscape.

Talking History: The Italian Unification

It's the beginning of 1859, and we're at a pivotal point in the story. While it would be an exaggeration to say that the entire Italian Unification hinges on the events of this episode, the timing of events here will play a role in everything to come. The plan was for Cavour to stir up trouble in the duchy of Modena, which would lead to an escalating series of diplomatic incidents that would start a war between Piedmont and Austria, while making Austria look like the aggressor. France would then come to Piedmont's aid and crush the Austrians. We'll see Cavour's plan begin to crumble as the rest of Europe attempts to intervene to stop the war before it starts. In desperation, the lifelong gambler will double down on his plan. In the end, it will be Austria's foolishness rather than his cleverness that makes the difference, and he will win despite himself.

In this episode, John Keahey, author of several Italian travel narrative books, including Seeking Sicily, shares with us his thoughts, feelings, and experiences about the beautiful island of Sicily. At the end of the show, we also hear a touching story from Mama Alfieri, who talks about how it felt growing up as a poor child in Italy around the holidays. Episode Guest: Here’s an introduction to this episode’s guest, Seeking Sicily author John Keahey: John Keahey has spent more than thirty years as a newspaper/wire service reporter and editor who has turned his love for Italy into a career of writing and speaking on the subject. His third book– Seeking Sicily : A Cultural Journey through Myth and Reality— takes a unique approach beyond the typical travel narrative. It explores Sicilian culture through a variety of elements: its cuisine, which draws from the influences from the various nations that once controlled the island; its authors, who, like their fellow islanders, consider themselves Sicilian rather than Italian; and through their deeply ingrained isolationist attitudes of Sicily’s three thousand-year history of being ruled by one invader after another (northern Italians being that latest conqueror during Italian Unification in 1861). Keahey also examines the influence of the Mafia and the impact of Sicilian-Greek myths that still permeate the Mediterranean’s largest, most mysterious, and most historically significant island.

After World War Two, former New Zealand prisoner of war Gunner Jim Henderson wrote "We used to say after the war the Red Cross should take over the world and run it. They'd shown what they could do in a world mad with war." Most people know about the Red Cross: during the War of Italian Unification between imperial Austria and the Franco-Sardinian alliance, Swiss businessman Henri Dunant visited the northern Italian battlefield of Solferino in 1859. Deeply affected by the 40,000 mostly unattended casualties on the battlefield, Dunant wrote A Memory of Solferino, founded the relief society that became the Red Cross and was the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901. Giuseppe Garibaldi is, by a huge margin, the most famous person in the story of the Italian Unification. But, his fame goes beyond that. In many ways, he was the most famous person of the entire 19th century - he was the first international superstar heart-throb romantic hero. Garibaldi was famous on a scale never before seen, as his fame coincided with an explosion in the technology of mass media - the telegraph, lithography, photography, combined with increasing literacy and public interest in foreign affairs.

In the early 1820's most of Italy was still ruled by the same men who had squared off against Napoleon - Grand Duke Ferdinand in Tuscany, King Ferdinand in Naples, and Pope Pius VII in the Papal States. King Victor Emmanuel I had abdicated in 1821 and his brother Charles Felix was now king, but they were men cut from the same cloth, so Piedmont still had a decidedly pre-Napoleonic mindset. There will be a changing of the guard, and by 1831 all of these men will be dead and gone, replaced with new rulers who will be some of the key players in the Italian Unification. We're also going to see another wave of revolutions in that break out in 1831, and which will meet much the same fate as those in 1820 and 21.
