Franz Joseph als Kind, Jugendlicher, Erwachsener und Kaiser (5): Tod und Vermächtnis. Mit: Thomas Just, Direktor des Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchivs. Gestaltung: Sabine Nikolay. Sendung vom: 21.11.2025
Was prägte sie? In the latter half of the 19th century, Europe was dazzled by the beauty, charm and sensibility of two empresses: Eugénie, Empress of the French via her marriage to Napoleon III; and Elisabeth (or 'Sisi'), consort to the Austrian emperor, Franz Joseph. Author Nancy Goldstone speaks to Danny Bird about the lives of these two women, revealing how they broke boundaries and redefined what a royal consort could be.

“We have been forced to draw the sword”. Following the expiry of Austria's Ultimatum on Saturday 25th July 1914, the Kaiser and the Tsar - friends and cousins, long desirous of peace between their two nations - found themselves in a new and highly precarious situation. Even so, there was still a widespread sense across Europe that war could be avoided, with Sir Edward Grey determined to mediate between Serbia, Russia, Austria and Germany. His efforts would be frustrated when, a month after the assassination, emperor Franz Joseph finally signed the declaration of war on Serbia. That same afternoon the power brokers of St. Petersburg were urging a reticent Tsar to declare war. Then, in the early hours of the following day, there was a mighty explosion outside Belgrade, where a contingent of Serbians, embroiled in the assassination of the Archduke, had blown up a major railway bridge connecting Belgrade to Austria. Following this, there emerged from the darkness three Austro-Hungarian warships, their sights set on revenge…. Join Dominic and Tom as they describe the most dramatic day in the lead up to the First World War so far. With the world hovering on the edge of a gaping precipice, the British cabinet subsequently met again to discuss Germany's next course of action, their thoughts inevitably turning to “plucky little Belgium”… _______ *The Rest Is History LIVE in the U.S.A.* If you live in the States, we've got some great news: Tom and Dominic will be performing throughout America in November, with shows in San Francisco, L.A., Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Boston and New York. *The Rest Is History LIVE at the Royal Albert Hall* Tom and Dominic, accompanied by a live orchestra, take a deep dive into the lives and times of two of history's greatest composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. From the late-nineteenth century until the mid-1930s, Vienna was Europe's undisputed powerhouse of ideas. But along with the exhilirating achievements of Freud, Wittgenstein, Mahler, and Klimt, there were also darker forces emerging in parallel which have had their own negative impact on modernity, from organized anti-Semitism to ethnonationalism ideologies. These complex tensions are explored in detail in Richard Cockett's excellent new book, "Vienna: How the City of Ideas Created the Modern World." In this discussion with Robert Amsterdam, Cockett explains how the Habsburg emperor, Franz Joseph, permitted such intellectual flourishing to occur, as the rapid influx of Jews and other groups and their assimilation into the Austrian middle class via commercial and educational success augmented intellectual curiosity, discovery, and experimentation throughout the city. Viennese café and salon culture also helped to foster schools of thought, as students and professors would furiously debate disputed major questions of the day into the wee hours. The conditions for this fervent intellectual incubation of course was not to last, and we're all aware of what followed. Cockett's thoughtful history of the city in this period highlights what we can learn about encouraging greater intellectual vitality, pluralism, and civilizational development.

Civil Defence staff are standing by on the West Coast as heavy rain rolls in. The wet weather is expected to batter Westland and the Grey Districts, with the worst arriving around midday between Otira and inland from Haast. West Coast Civil Defence Te Aroha Cook told Tim Dower that staff have been deployed to emergency operation centres in Westland, Greymouth, Franz Joseph, and Haast, to manage any escalations in the situation.
The Art of Star Trek Cutaways with Chris & Matt Cushman Chris and Matt Cushman are the masters of the cutaway, a type of technical illustration that strips away the hull of an industrial-designed object to show its inner workings. Lucky for sci-fi fans, the brothers are hardcore Trekkies and have used their talents for decades to pull back the exteriors of starships to display every nook and cranny of their interiors. Chris and Matt explain how they went from reading Franz Joseph's technical blueprints in bookstores to creating them on their own. From there, Chris tells how a job with David Kimble changed his career trajectory and breaks down his famous Enterprise-D poster that became one of the best and worst moments of his time drawing starships. Matt tells us how he joined his brother in this endeavor, and they break down how they create their masterpieces, from the Enterprise to DS9, Klingon and Romulan ships, and everything in between. On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip shot the heir apparent to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Hear how this assassination sparked World War I, ended four empires, created many new countries, and led to World War II.

As we learned in season one of Reign On Me, royal family drama didn't begin with our modern tabloid stories about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - It's a tale as old as time. To be royal is to be the drama, dahling. In season two of Reign On Me, we dive into the deep end of the Hapsburg dynasty and the intrigues of Austria's last emperor, Franz Joseph, and his wife the eccentric Empress Sisi. A story that once began in triumph - and ended in a series of scandals and tragedies. Did Sisi suffer from the rumored curse of what was then called the Bavarian madness, or was she a progressive genius simply ahead of her time? Was the Emperor a mama's boy who couldn't rule and should have abdicated to his brother? Was the last archduchess the product of an affair? Was a murder-suicide covered up? In a family that on the surface looks more cursed than the Kennedys, was there a way these misfortunes could have been prevented? In season 2 of Reign On Me, we'll also look at how the industrial revolution changed monarchy forever, leaving only the soon to be renamed House of Windsor the last empire standing. How did England's Empire manage to be the only one to survive the first world war? So pull up a chair, pour your favorite drink, and join me, Jennifer Gulbrandsen, as we delve into more drama than today's modern monarchies can dish out as we start Season 2 of Reign on Me, the Hot Mess Hapsburgs, and the end of the Austrian Empire.
Support the show

Gene Roddenberry was impressed enough with Franz Joseph's proposed technical manual that he suggested contacting Lincoln Enterprises - Gene's own company for merchandising Star Trek. Joseph complied and sent along a few more details as well as concerns about the business relationship. See the documents: facebook.com/thetrekfiles

In 1973, Franz Joseph was a retired industrial designer with a daughter who was a huge Star Trek fan. As he learned more about the fandom, he found a good place to use his talents by converting what he saw on screen into technical drawings. That sparked an idea he shared with Gene Roddenberry in 1973. The Trek Files welcomes Karen Schnaubelt, Joseph's daughter, to share the rest of the story. See the documents: facebook.com/thetrekfiles

PERSIGUE TUS SUEÑOS Devoción Matutina para Jóvenes 2020 Narrado por: Daniel Ramos Desde: Connecticut, Estados Unidos Una cortesía de DR'Ministries y Canaan Seventh-Day Adventist Church 05 DE OCTUBRE KARL LANDSTEINER Podemos hacer nuestros planes, pero el Señor determina nuestros pasos. Proverbios 16:9. ¿Me podrías indicar cómo llegar a Ringstrasse? Me preguntó cómo llegar a Ringstrasse.

This week on 70s Trek co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto talk about the first reference book about Star Trek, The Starfleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph. It was published in 1975, and is a great look into what Star Trek was in 1975, and what it might have been, as well. Joseph was a designer who came upon this project because his daughter was a Trek fan. The book is full of diagrams and proposed information about Starfleet, the academy and much, much more. Joseph closely examined frames of film from episodes to see what props, sets and consoles looked like. He then redrew them for the Manual. But this book is also unique for how it treats the material: Joseph wrote the book as if it was an intercepted computer file from the future. He treats it as real, and enthusiastic fans in 1975 loved it!
