Send us a textEpisode 193The battle may have crowned him a hero, but peace made him a problem. In Part Two of our journey, the wild son of Nice is no longer charging into war with a sword raised high—he's limping, wounded, betrayed, and watching the nation he helped forge slip from his grasp. But the fire never leaves him. From the storming of Rome to the heartbreak of seeing his ideals sold off like scraps, Giuseppe Garibaldi's final years are a story of stubborn courage, disillusionment, and an unbreakable belief in freedom. This is not a tale of quiet retirement. It's one of final battles, old loves, bitter enemies, and a man still burning at the edge of history.Strap in. The legend isn't done yet.Support the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com

Send us a textEpisode 192Before he became a hero of two worlds, before Italy bore his name in street corners and city squares, Giuseppe Garibaldi was just a boy from Nice—driven by fire and a fierce desire to change the world. In this opening chapter of his remarkable life, we trace his earliest adventures: from the windswept coast of Liguria to the chaos of revolution, exile, and first bloodshed in South America.Discover how betrayal shaped him, how exile hardened him, and how the sale of his beloved homeland to France lit a flame that would burn across continents. This is fire, blood, conviction—and the beginning of a man who refused to bow, refused to break, and lived only to liberate.Support the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com

Though we remember Browning far more readily than we do Landor, this poem dates from a period when their fortunes were reversed and the latter was eager to acquaint the world with the budding talent he had discovered.Walter Savage Landor (30 January 1775 – 17 September 1864) was an English writer, poet, and activist. His best known works were the prose Imaginary Conversations, and the poem "Rose Aylmer," but the critical acclaim he received from contemporary poets and reviewers was not matched by public popularity. As remarkable as his work was, it was equalled by his rumbustious character and lively temperament. Both his writing and political activism, such as his support for Lajos Kossuth and Giuseppe Garibaldi, were imbued with his passion for liberal and republican causes. He befriended and influenced the next generation of literary reformers such as Charles Dickens and Robert Browning.-bio via Wikipedia Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the victorious allied powers restore Central Europe to its pre-war status: a bunch of small, semi-independent German and Italian states, dominated by more powerful neighbors. But the idea of nationalism, spread by Napoleon's armies, is a genie you can't put back in the bottle. In the German Confederation, 38 tiny countries try to establish their legitimacy, but are overshadowed by the Austrian Empire in the south and the Kingdom of Prussia in the north. Without a clear path to political nationalization, German intellectuals instead focus on building a unified German culture. In Italy, revolutionaries like Giuseppe Mazzini openly call for Risorgimento – a resurgence of Italian national identity. Drawing their inspiration from ancient Rome, these young revolutionaries will spend an entire generation battling to overthrow their Austrian overlords while avoiding French domination. This episode of the Real Life in Italy is answering the question: who the hell were Garibaldi and Cavour anyway? These names are everywhere we look in Italy. It's because these two characters were key players in the Italian Unification - the Risorgimento. There's a long, long history lesson behind that, but today, let's take it easy and just get to know your new Italian (er or are they French?) friends: Giuseppe Garibaldi and Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour. I'm joined by fellow American in Italy Verity Pryor-Harden, who just like you was curious about who these men were and what their deal was. Well I'm here to tell you. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we will be discussing the Risorgimento, the best and worst ideologies in Italy, Pinocchio as a metaphor for Italian unification, and of course, pizza. The Risorgimento was a period of political and social upheaval in Italy that lasted from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century. The movement aimed to unite the various states and regions of Italy into one unified nation. This period saw the rise of many notable figures such as Giuseppe Garibaldi and Camillo di Cavour, who played a crucial role in the unification of Italy. When it comes to ideologies in Italy, there have been both positive and negative influences on the country's history. On the positive side, the liberal and democratic ideals that emerged during the Risorgimento have had a lasting impact on Italian society and politics. On the negative side, the rise of fascism under Benito Mussolini in the early 20th century had a devastating impact on the country and its people. Pinocchio, the beloved children's story written by Carlo Collodi, can also be seen as a metaphor for the Italian unification. The character's journey from a wooden puppet to a real boy can be seen as a metaphor for the transformation of Italy from a collection of separate states to a unified nation. And last but not least, let's talk about pizza. Italy's most famous export, pizza is a symbol of the country's rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions. Whether you're a fan of traditional Margherita or a more unconventional topping, there's a pizza for everyone. #Risorgimento #ItalianUnification #Pinocchio #Pizza #ItalianCulture Today's Guest: Joseph Pascone, Host of Turning Tides Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/turning-tides/id1653316649 You can learn more about the History of Papacy and subscribe at all these great places: http://atozhistorypage.com/ https://www.historyofthepapacypodcast.com email: steve@atozhistorypage.com https://www.patreon.com/historyofthepapacy parthenonpodcast.com https://www.gettr.com/user/atozhistory Beyond the Big Screen: Beyondthebigscreen.com The History of the Papacy on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6DO2leym3kizBHW0ZWl-nA Get Your History of the Papacy Podcast Products Here: https://www.atozhistorypage.com/products Help out the show by ordering these books from Amazon! https://smile.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1MUPNYEU65NTF Music Provided by: "Sonatina in C Minor" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Funeral March for Brass" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "String Impromptu Number 1" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Intended Force" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Agnus Dei X - Bitter Suite Kevin MacLeaod (incomptech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Begin Transcript:
