Dr Jemma Green has helped create one of the biggest innovation transformations to the energy market in years...“And lots of people would say, well, you can't do the Uberfication of electricity because it's different. And for me, it was like, well, it's not like you can't, but it takes something more. And maybe we're really naive in anticipating actually what it would take, but it actually can happen.”Dr Jemma Green, Co-Founder and Chairman of Powerledger, joins our Change Happens podcast host Jenelle McMaster, to discuss her entrepreneurial story about how she disrupted the electricity market by starting a technology company that uses blockchain for energy and environmental commodity trading.Host: Jenelle McMaster is Deputy CEO Oceania and Markets Leader at EY.Guest: Dr Jemma Green is Co-Founder & Executive Chairman Powerledger, EY Fintech Entrepreneur of the YearListen now: Apple Podcasts or Spotify or where ever you get your favourite podcasts.
Dr. Jemma Green, co-founder and executive chairman of Powerledger, joins me on the Tech Talks Daily Podcast. We discuss the importance of renewable energy and the role of blockchain technology in encouraging its growth. As renewable energy becomes more prevalent, the current centralized grid system in place can create issues for grid stability, leading to wasted energy and increased costs. Powerledger has developed a blockchain-enabled software that matches the time and place of energy generation to when and where it is required, enabling peer-to-peer trading of excess renewable energy within local energy communities. This system reduces the cost of energy, encourages the growth of renewable energy, and reduces the need for fossil fuel-based energy. Additionally, Powerledger has developed a proprietary blockchain solution that is less energy-intensive and faster than previous blockchain systems. The company has won numerous awards for its work in this space and has implemented projects in 12 countries. Dr. Green's championing of sustainability and corporate social responsibility, coupled with her PhD in electricity market disruption, laid the groundwork for Powerledger's mission to create a more agile energy market. Much of our global greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution come from energy used in cities. Transportation and buildings, in particular, are energy-intensive sectors, as Dr Jan Rosenow states.Transitioning away from fossil fuels is not straightforward, no matter where we are in the world. Godwin Aigbokhan refers to the Nigerian ‘funnel', where less than 4 GW of the 13 GW electricity generated gets distributed. As a result, there are millions of oversized diesel generators. Dr Jemma Green contrasts this with Germany, which has a high penetration of renewables, but also high electricity costs and carbon emissions due to its grid design and stabilisation requirements. We are now having to change all the wheels - figuratively - after the airplane has taken off. We must move to low carbon sources and tackle efficiency, which includes using energy that is produced, but currently not consumed. We must also look to storage, and to making dispatchable alternatives scalable and cost-effective. Jan sees green hydrogen as potentially playing an important role here, not least in high temperature applications in industry. Both Jemma and Jan talk about the importance of when and where electricity is generated and utilised. Jemma recommends time- and place-based price signals, increasing renewable energy supply only where it matches demand, deploying storage, enabling close proximity trading, and having a more cellular, efficient grid. Shifting from a centralised to a peer-to-peer distributed model is a major urban opportunity. Blockchain-based technology can enable energy communities where electricity - and even the payment - travels shorter distances. Jemma's company Powerledger is implementing solutions in the global north and south.Aside from physical and digital infrastructure, all three speakers talked about policy, with Europe as the “learning laboratory”, to quote Jan. This includes net metering, smart electricity tariffs based on supply and demand, carbon pricing, and product efficiency. We need ways to increase renewables without wasting energy, making it unaffordable or indeed creating more backlash and knee-jerk reactions from consumers and industry.Speakers:Godwin Eni Aigbokhan - Former Head of Energy and Environment Competence Center, Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Nigeria, AHKDr Jan Rosenow - Principal and European Programme Director, Regulatory Assistance ProjectDr Jemma Green - Executive Chairman & Co-Founder, PowerledgerLinks:UN Habitat on Future of Energy

On today's episode, Jeff welcomes Dr. Jemma Green to the program. Dr. Green is the Co-Founder and Chairman of Power Ledger. Jeff talks to her about her company, the state of the renewable energy sector, and how her platform can utilize blockchain technology to change the way people distribute and use renewable energy sources. Gunnar joins the program in the second half, where they talk about how this could be implemented to the state of Iowa. The boys end the show talking about the various things there are to do in Iowa.
Dr. Jemma Green is the co-founder and chairman of Power Ledger. Power Ledger is a four year old technology company, with 20 power projects in over nine countries, that facilitate two things - the trading of electricity and the trading of environmental commodities using blockchain technology. In this podcast we discuss with Jemma how their platform is revolutionising the power industry and how it is being used to democratise power. What is blockchain? Blockchain is a like a database that can be used in many different ways. It is a common record keeping system which creates more efficiencies in the transaction process between counterparties who in the past would have had their own record keeping system. Using a blockchain enables an entry in a ledger to contain both the payment and the physical statement of a digital asset. This reduces the settlement risk or the need to reconcile and settle payments which can be very costly for the transacting parties. With smart contracts, which sit on the blockchain, you can also perform complex commerce transactions. The Energy Industry For the last century or so electricity markets have remained relatively unchanged. It is characterised by large power stations, typically, coal and gas fired power, bringing electricity to people's homes brought by transmission and distribution networks, the grid. In the past 15 years, a new paradigm has begun to emerge as citizens and business have installed rooftop solar panels on their homes and office buildings. More recently, battery storage is being installed inside homes and businesses, as well as large scale solar and wind farms. Technology can help facilitate the dispatch of electricity via virtual power plants to stabilise the grid which historically has suffered from volatile prices creating significant problems in the market. Surplus rooftop solar power can be stored in batteries, and that market mechanism, facilitated by Power Ledger’s technology, can help the grid deliver low cost, clean and resilient power. These power technologies, along with the connectivity of blockchain to bring communities together, serves as a kind of citizen utility which provides a certain level of empowerment that has the potential to drive the next wave of innovation to democratise power. There are numerous drivers towards the democratisation of power. For some it is about getting a better price for electricity whilst for others it is their concern regarding air quality and the potential to electrify transportation in their city. Jemma believes that overall people are very engaged in the topic of electricity and becoming much more sophisticated in what they understand of the markets and what they expect of them. Power Ledger introduction Power Ledger is a technology company that uses blockchain to facilitate trading of electricity and environmental commodities. Their vision is leading the global democratisation of energy movement. To give people access to energy and to participate directly in energy markets and improve their lives and the lives of others. Power Ledger would like to be recognised as a major contributor to transforming energy markets and sustainability globally and positively impacting the lives of 1 billion people. That’s Power Ledger’s big ambition that makes the, want to get out of bed every morning and do what they do. Power Ledger the Uber / AirBnB of electricity Blockchain enables buyers and sellers to transact with each other directly without the need for an intermediary. In the case of electricity, households with rooftop solar panels could sell its surplus electricity to its neighbours in much the same way as Uber and AirBnb allow people to monetize their cars and spare rooms. Power Ledger works with electricity retailers in providing them with its trading platform to facilitate the retailer’s customers to trade electricity between themselves. Blockchain provides all parties with the source ...

Jemma Green, cofounder and chairman of PowerLedger, describes how the company, which won the 2018 Extreme Tech Challenge, spearheaded by Sir Richard Branson and CES, is using tokens to solve various energy problems. One is the principal-agent problem in which the landlords of residential buildings don't have an incentive to install renewables because the tenants are the ones who would recoup the savings. Another is that, as more people install renewables, the grid is becoming less robust and more expensive. She describes the two types of tokens PowerLedger has, how that enables peer-to-peer trading but also involves the utilities, which pilots they have going now, how they're enabling energy asset financing and their work with carbon credits. Welcome to Episode 19 of Good Will Hunters! This week I chat to Alicia Curtis, Founder of Alyceum and 100 Women. Like last week's guest, Dr Jemma Green, I came across Alicia at the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. Alicia was nominated for her work in establishing and growing 100 Women, a giving circle intended to ignite women's philanthropy. Alicia gave a TEDx talk on this very topic in Peth last year. In that talk, Alicia spoke about how many women, traditionally, don't view themselves as philanthropists because they're not on extraordinarily high wages. When we think of philanthropists, we think of Bill Gates or Andrew Forrest, not ourselves! Alicia and her team at 100 Women are out to change this perception, teaching us that we can all be philanthropists. You'll have to listen to the episode to find out how..! Alicia and I also chat about why we should all consider joining a not for profit board, and the skills needed from modern day board members. I am inspired by every guest I have on this show but this episode in particular was like a call to action for me, to join a board, to become a philanthropist and to never shy away from leadership. Welcome to Episode 18 of Good Will Hunters, with Dr Jemma Green, Co-Founder and CEO of PowerLedger, the leading peer to peer marketplace for renewable energy trading. A few weeks ago I attended the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in Sydney. Jemma was nominated, and won! Just days earlier, Jemma was on Nekker Island with Richard Branson himself celebrating a whole different award. Suffice to say, Jemma is on a winning streak. But in this episode, Jemma explains why she doesn't have that winning feeling yet - PowerLedger has a huge decade ahead of it, not least due to Jemma's vision of PowerLedger playing a significant role in achieving the Paris Climate Goals and democratising energy, for good. I'm the first to admit that I don't really "get" blockchain. I also haven't made an effort to understand it, until I attended an event a few weeks ago showcasing the incredible impact blockchain can have on conservation efforts (check out this website for more on that: https://www.wwf.org.au/get-involved/panda-labs/wwf-australia-and-blockchain). From that point onwards, I was intent on showcasing the impact blockchain can have on social change in this show. In this episode, Jemma and I discuss how PowerLedger enables the democratisation of renewable energy trading, by allowing households to sell their solar energy, harvested from their own roof, and be paid immediately. The process is underpinned by a blockchain, which keeps tally of who's selling and buying. There's also a cryptocurrency involved - in fact, PowerLedger was the first Australian business to do an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) - I view Jemma and her team as new age, very tech-savvy, super intelligent eco-warriors. Jemma and I talk about much more than blockchain in this episode too -we talk about leadership, eco-villages, serendipitous meetings, climate goals and more. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review on iTunes and let us know what you liked most via our social media channels @goodwillpod. Have you got a great idea for an episode? Today we met with Deryck Graham of First Digital Capital, who’s sponsoring the live community event ‘Blockchain Economy’ happening next week in Perth, on Tues 21st August with a view to attracting crypto enthusiasts, blockchain professionals, investors and those simply wanting to learn more about all of the above. The main purpose of the event being education and networking. Guest speakers include a veritable New York line up starting with Dr Scott Stornetta, Co-Inventor of the Blockchain, Dr David Yermack, Professor of Finance at NYU Business School and currently working for a month with the University of Western Australia, and Justin Dombrowski, CEO of Soho who is presently collaborating with First Digital Capital. While we questioned Deryck about the obvious lack of women in the speakers’ line up, he assured us that Fremantle’s very own Dr Jemma Green was unable to join the event that evening and that visiting Simonne Hurse of Techfest-club.com and Satis group would be among panellists on the night. I really really care about getting more women involved in all this, and I co-run a group for women in tech here in NYC, with 2000 members. We're always looking for excellent speakers + companies to sponsor the group, please get in touch if you'd like to get involved. (http://www.techfest-club.com/) From Simonne’s profile on LinkedIn. Dr Scott Stornetta struck our imagination and Amy-Rose is musing over whether he’s actually Satoshi, or better, Scottoshi… Currently a high-school maths teacher, he started working on the blockchain idea back in 1991 while working as a researcher at Bell Labs, before even the unfolding of the internet. The research involved whether he and a colleague, could make a digital file unbreakable and indelible, according to Deryck. They were unable to prove their hypothesis, but then 3 months later, they couldn’t prove that it COULDN’T be done either… Some time later while queuing at a busy restaurant one Sunday lunch, he had an ‘ahah’ moment when he observed all the people lined up in front and behind him, with the other diners watching them in line… “Hashtags in a chain were the people in the queue, and the distributed ledger were the people watching us in the crowd…” Dr Scott Stornetta’s work is mentioned 3 times in the Bitcoin whitepaper by Satoshi Nakamoto. Deryck has been involved in a number of community charity events, one that saw Perth Porsche drivers take children out for a convoy ride through the streets and city of Perth in conjunction with Make-a-Wish Australia (transforming the lives of children battling life-threatening medical conditions through the healing power of a wish), raising in the meantime hundreds of thousands of dollars. He currently runs Classic Cars & Coffees one Sunday a month at the University of WA, where between 350 to 550 cars are showcased by members who raise funds for charities. We’re thrilled to be attending Blockchain Economy this coming week and will share all the chats and interviews on the Clothesline! Mayor of the City of Fremantle, Brad Pettitt, has an interesting take on Blockchain technology and its potential role helping create a more sustainable urban environment. In addition, he talks about the potential decentralisation of some aspects of government bodies by employing Blockchain technology - providing transparency and efficiency. With an academic background in sustainability as former Dean of the School of Sustainability at Murdoch University, Brad and the City of Fremantle are perfectly placed to work alongside Dr Jemma Green of Power Ledger, as a natural development to what started as a local infill project in the city suburb of White Gum Valley. In this second stage of the project working in conjunction with Power Ledger, users may be able to trade solar power using this Blockchain technology software by trading peer-to-peer, yet still being connected to the grid. With Blockchain effectively creating a verification process, there is a means to see exactly how much a particular household is consuming, thereby making it easier to fairly trade resources. In terms of other ways that Blockchain tech may end up decentralising some aspects of local government, Brad talks briefly about the potential effect on voting. Instead of going to the polls every 4 years, people can influence their communities more effectively by ‘…having more say more often’ and therefore being more involved because there is a sense that your words matter and cannot be glossed over – literally putting ‘power back into the hands of the people’. Give yourself a short time to be swept away into what at first seems like a mix of sci-fi and fantasy – house to house exchange of solar power through the Blockchain – I kept trying to picture my neighbours trying to push sunshine through a digital ledger system. Bizarre and decidedly Dr Spock-ish. But no! It’s Dr Green. Dr Jemma Green is the most pleasant mix of totally approachable and yet decidedly unBS-sy. She takes my most un-tech questions and flips me back the answers in a matter-of-fact and informative way. Kudos to a woman managing so many impressive roles from mother to co-founder to researcher and more. Jemma uses her strong background in both finance and environmental science to bring to the world an opportunity to use solar power resources peer to peer, ie, between households, and also in an apartment block where power (electricity) can be sold directly to the inhabitants even though they don’t have access to individual solar panels. Teaming together with other tech-minds Jemma is truly a disruptive innovator in the blockchain community and it was such a pleasure to talk to such a straight-shooting, down-to-earth mamma pregnant with her second child! This week in Crypto Watch, Alan Kohler spoke to Dr. Jemma Green, the Co-founder and Chair of Power Ledger - an innovative blockchain trading system for trading power peer to peer to find out how it all operates.
In the first episode of our new series of ReWired: The Innovators, Adam Morton meets Dr Jemma Green - a former investment banker, entrepreneur and, most recently, interim mayor of the City of Perth. She's also co-founder of energy trading start-up PowerLedger, which stormed through its Initial Coin Offering earlier this year and raised $34 million for its platform allowing electricity consumers to receive and trade energy with power companies, and each other. Jemma talks of the demise of a century-old dynamic where energy consumers were at the end of a long line of service delivery, one that is being replaced, instead, with a "democratisation of power" where the user is King. In this fascinating conversation, Green describes the many and varied paths she's taken to get to PowerLedger, from investment firms in London to the Camino de Santiago in Spain, and her vision for a future driven by "citizen utilities". And yes, blockchain gets a mention, too. For more info, go to arena.gov.au/blog or find us on Facebook.
In this short 'explainer' episode we're joined by Jemma Green, CEO of Power Ledger, who explains what blockchain is, why it's important to energy and what her company is doing with the technology.
Power Ledger’s Jemma Green on how blockchain technology will allow consumers to share solar energy; while David Leitch and Giles Parkinson differ on whether we should ignore Tony Abbott.
BZE Radio's Anthony and Matt talk to Jemma Green, Co-founder and Chair of Perth start-up Power Ledger at the cutting edge of where solar energy meets Blockchain Technology. Power Ledger allows renewable energy asset owners to decide who they want to sell their surplus energy to and at what price.
