How to build 7 tech companies in 15 years whilst finding your center as an entrepreneur?   “I think entrepreneurs are uniquely positioned to hit those walls more than other people are, because of the difficulties of building a startup, failing, and doing it again - it makes you question yourself much more than other professions will afford you to do.”   Sometimes, as much as we might hate it, doubt can be a good thing. It's not about knowing everything right from the beginning, but having the ability to ask the tough and important questions, to be willing to change and be surprised. This ability is a must, especially as a founder.   I think one of the big secrets that no one tells founders in the beginning of the way, is that the real challenging part of this journey won't be raising the funds, but will come from inside yourself. The highest walls you must break come from within. It might sound gloomy, but as Jonathan said: “Once you turn that switch of knowing you can do it - it's turned for life, and that's the key.”   Diving into everything in The Human Founder podcast episode 89 with Jonathan Ellman, Co-Founder & Chairman of Flip, קו-פאונדר ומנכ״ל Seekers    This episode is in loving memory of Micha.

Skilled in coalition building, solving difficult problems, and building oil and gas companies, Mike is a strong entrepreneurial professional with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) focused in Psychology from East Central University. A 40 year industry veteran, Mike sees the oil and gas industry, at least in the conventional vertical well space, as offering the greatest return on investment in the American economy. Michael (Mike) Cantrell was born and raised in Oklahoma, where his family has strong ties to the oilfield. Cantrell's grandfather was a driller in the 1920's, eventually starting his own business in the 1950's, which Cantrell's father joined a few years later. In 1968, his father shifted into the production side of the business, where Cantrell gained hands-on experience in the field, accompanying his father in business from an early age. Cantrell attended East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma and graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. While Cantrell was, and still is, keenly interested in psychology, he wanted a career in which he could work for himself and decided to continue on the family legacy in the petroleum industry. In 1975, Cantrell started Oklahoma Basic Economy Corporation, an Ada, Oklahoma based oil and gas exploration and production company specializing in enhancing production in more mature formations, serving as President until 2000. That year, Cantrell sold Oklahoma Basic Economy Corporation and a few months later, founded Cantrell Investments LLC, an oil and gas investment company, with assets primarily in Oklahoma., Texas and Kansas. Around that time, Cantrell decided to leave his longtime home in Oklahoma and relocated to Plano, Texas, just outside Dallas. A few short years later, in 2006, he moved back to Oklahoma. In 2009, Cantrell accepted a consulting position with Continental Resources, where he was an integral part of building the company's Government Relations Division, eventually serving as Vice President of Governmental and Regulatory Affairs. While at Continental, Cantrell maintained his oil and gas interests and upon leaving the company in March 2013, shifted his focus back to Cantrell Investments. As a longtime veteran, Cantrell notes that this industry is "an exciting place to work," crediting his dedicated employees - many of whom have been with him for years, if not decades - for their team's overall success. He also points out that it is an added benefit to have assets performing for you, and in turn generating profit, even while you sleep! Even though he has no shortage to choose from, Cantrell easily considers his greatest accomplishment to be raising two motivated children - both successful in their chosen fields - who he claims are even smarter than their dad. In fact, both his children have taken a page from their father's book in some way - his daughter is a political consultant and his son a fourth generation oilman. And though each have their own, independent companies, Cantrell has also worked closely over the years on joint ventures and projects with both his father and brother. In his free time, you will most likely find Cantrell on his Harley Davidson, whether he's traveling to the corners of the United States or just taking a quick ride. Cantrell is also very active in industry organizations, and serves on the Board of Directors of: Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association, The Domestic Energy Producers Alliance, The Council for a Secure America, Citizens Bank of Ada, and is the Vice Chairman of Oklahomans for Lawsuit Reform. Additionally, Cantrell is the Chairman of the National Stripper Well Association, and is a longtime member of the Board of Directors for the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers. Cantrell adds that he has sincerely enjoyed working with the Alliance, saying, "I have never felt as effective in Washington D.C. as I did when accompanying Alliance leadership" to the U.S. Capitol earlier this year. UVC's organically built network of more than 17,000 people have helped accelerate startup formation, funding and growth across a broad geography encompassing 7 metro areas. In 2018 he founded non profit Entrepreneurs Across Borders to identify, curate and connect emerging entrepreneurs in impoverished areas with resources needed to create jobs, sustainable livelihoods and equitable growth, beginning with Jamaica as the pilot country. In addition to not for profit leadership and serving on TriNet's Board, Mr. Babinec is Founder/Managing Director of UpVentures Capital and Co-Founder/Chairman of StartFast Venture Accelerator which together have combined for more than 75 seed stage investments in emerging technology companies. He is a graduate of Shippensburg University and past recipient of SVBJ Silicon Valley Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Did you know that a high percentage of missed school days in emerging markets are due to dental problems caused by poor dental care practices? Or, that 90 percent of global health problems, including COVID-19, would be solved if all of us washed our hands seven times a day?  In this podcast, Thomas Serval, CEO of Baracoda Group, discusses how health issues can be prevented through daily care and wellness practices. His company is creating new smart objects for the bathroom—mirrors, bathmats, toothbrushes, and so on—connected by an open operating system, CareOS. The smart bathroom ecosystem Baracoda and its partners are developing is privacy-first, but the data and insights generated can help people proactively prevent diseases and support better health practices over the long-term.  We talk about Thomas’ 17 years of experience at CES, where Baracoda has consistently introduced award-winning daily healthtech innovations. This year marks the fifth year in a row of garnering CES Innovation Awards. At this year’s virtual event, Baracoda unveiled the Themis smart mirror, named a CES 2021 Innovation Awards Honoree. Themis provides a privacy-first wide range of health and wellness capabilities: skin analysis, product recommendations, makeup and beard tutorials, daily temperature checks, smart alerts, fertility cycle reminders, and more—all in a compact form factor with a 10-inch screen at an accessible price. The company also showcased Baracoda BBalance, the smart bathroom mat that checks weight, balance, and posture—also a CES 2020 Innovation Awards Honoree.  Not many people think of the bathroom as the hub of preventative health practices, but this enlightening podcast will change your mind. New connected objects can help you spot suspicious moles that might signal skin cancer, check your temperature and heart rate, and determine whether or not you are brushing your teeth effectively.  Learn more about Baracoda’s daily healthtech innovations, the company’s strategy, and the impact it could have on your health through better daily care—all in the privacy of your bathroom.  Thomas Serval, Co-Founder Chairman and CEO - Baracoda Former senior executive at Microsoft and Google. A graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure, and of the Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et de l’Administration Economique (ENSAE), Thomas filed his first patent - a Bluetooth barcode scanner - in 2000, and co-founded Baracoda the following year. Thomas is a serial entrepreneur and a visionary leader. He transforms large companies, as much as the daily life of consumers, through his disruptive innovations. We had a good discussion about the value of developing industry expertise as an entrepreneur.Nick and his team have a front row seat in the evolving and fast-growing cannabis industry. In this Network Capital podcast, Ronnie Screwvala, the founder of Upgrad, discusses how to grapple with failure and reinvent oneself. He talks about the role of serendipity in his life and what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Ronnie is a first generation entrepreneur who failed his Bachelor of Commerce in college but that did not deter his intent to start up on his own at a time where there was no eco-system for PE Funding or bank debt to start ups. His first foray was Cable TV in India and for the first two years of that journey he found no takers and only advise to treat it as a failed start up and move on, but with him staying at it he was credited with having pioneered Cable TV for all of India. Entrepreneurship is about finding and seizing opportunities and moving on from failures and Ronnie saw an opportunity in toothbrush manufacturing and after many setbacks went on to build one of the largest toothbrush operations in India. The other opportunity was TV Home Shopping but it was well before its time and was a big failure, but not enough for him to question if he should stick it out as an entrepreneur. Ronnie went on to build a media and entertainment company – UTV, where post many pivots and four almost near bankruptcies and 15 years of focussed work with strong co-founders and a large team, it scaled to a size spanning all aspects of Content and Platform and then he divested UTV to The Walt Disney Co in 2012. Perception in most cases is larger than reality and so in spite of so many failures, Newsweek termed him the Jack Warner of India, Esquire rated him one of the 75 most influential people of the 21st century and Fortune as Asia’s 25 most powerful. Having lived it and seen the misconception that it’s all about quick success and that failure is to frown on - he authored a book Dream With Your Eyes Open as his commitment to champion entrepreneurship and evangelize failure. Ronnie got the term “cat with nine lives” attached to him by colleagues and peers for the number of times he had failed, but reflecting on his setbacks and counting on his main virtue that success can never be timed and staying the course is the only option, Ronnie in his second innings decided to deepen his commitment to making India a better place through a focus on two of the largest sunrise sectors - Online Education & the not for profit Rural/Social space. He is Co-Founder & Chairman of upGrad which zeros in on the massive Online Education market and the fact that Learning for every working professional is now a lifelong commitment. He, along with his wife Zarina, are the Co-Founders of The Swades Foundation, which is committed to empower one million lives in rural India every 5-7 years through a 360 degree model spanning Water, Sanitation, Health, Education and Livelihood to lift them out of poverty permanently. As a hobby and passion Ronnie loves to tell stories that must to told via movies with his new brand RSVP and he owns 3 sports teams under the brand U Mumba in Kabaddi, Volleyball and Football even though he has never played any of the sports himself.

Show notes: 1:56: Interview: Angie Bastian, Co-Founder, Angie’s Boomchickapop -- We kick off the episode with Angie Bastian, who we featured in Ep. 126. Angie and her husband Dan launched Angie’s Boomchickapop in 2001 and it has evolved from a tiny operation selling kettle corn at farmers’ markets and fairs to an ubiquitous retail brand that was acquired last year by ConAgra Foods for $250 million. In the following clip, she spoke with NOSH editor Carol Ortenberg about why she believes in celebrating “the feminine with food,” and how that perspective played into a celebrated package revamp. 7:20: Interview: Christopher Kimball, Founder, Milk Street/America’s Test Kitchen -- Next up is Christopher Kimball, best known as the creator of television show “America’s Test Kitchen.” In 2015, Christopher, who also founded the magazines Cook’s Illustrated and Cook’s Country, launched Milk Street, a company focused on instructional recipes and techniques inspired by global cuisine. In this clip, from Episode 124, he explained why he’s not a fan of the term “ethnic cooking” and shared his stance on trendy buzzwords in the food business. 13:26: Interview: Zoë Sakoutis & Erica Huss, Founders, Blueprint -- We continue with Zoë Sakoutis & Erica Huss, the founders of Blueprint, a brand that pioneered the packaged cold-pressed juice category and helped mainstream juice cleansing. In a clip from our wide-ranging interview, which we featured in Ep. 133, they explained how a phone call from former Starbucks chairman and CEO Howard Schultz accelerated BluePrint’s eventual sale to Hain Celestial. 19:58: Interview: Andrew Zimmern, Host/Co-Creator, “Bizarre Foods” -- From Blueprint to Bizarre Foods, the show, that is. Andrew Zimmern is the host and co-creator of the popular television series in which he has chowed down on stomach-churning foods like raw pig testicles, a frog’s beating heart and cobra penis. In an interview included in episode 127, Zimmern discussed the role of food as a cultural medium that unites people and why he has a bone to pick with the natural food industry. 25:22: Interview: Don Vultaggio, Co-Founder/Chairman, AriZona -- On to Don Vultaggio, co-founder and chairman of AriZona Beverages and, at height quite literally, a towering figure in the drinks industry. In this clip, pulled from Ep. 139, Don discussed the mindset of successful entrepreneurs, how the company has maintained its iconic 99 cent pricing model for 26 years and why running a business means handling all kinds of problems, even if it means mopping up blood. 30:05: Interview: Kobe Bryant, Investor, BodyArmor -- Last, but certainly not least, we have NBA legend Kobe Bryant, who is an investor in fast-growing sports drink brand BodyArmor and has an active role in its business and marketing strategy. Colin Wiel is Co-Founder Chairman, and CTO of Mynd, a full stack, tech-enabled, property management company focused on small residential (single family rentals plus small multi-family buildings).AI and JavaColin grew up in Washington D.C., went to high school in Reno, Nevada, and went to UC Berkeley where he got his BA in mechanical engineering. Straight out of college, he landed a dream job at Boeing, where he wrote algorithms for automatic control systems and developed groundbreaking new software. He had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and soon struck out on his own as an independent software consultant working with giants like Hewlett Packard, Oracle, and Netscape, where he became one of the very first Java programmers in the world. He began developing and teaching the Java curriculum for UC Berkeley and while continuing his consulting with a new focus on Java. Eventually, his consulting grew into a full-fledged firm and he brought on many students he had taught. One of their big projects was transitioning Charles Schwab's website from C to Java, which at the time it was the largest e-commerce website in the world. When he sold his business, a friend sparked his interest in the mobile home park marketplace, and he started investing in that corner of real estate.“If that idea is counter to what most people think, all the better because that's where the opportunity lies.”WaypointAs he continued investing in mobile home parks and researching the single-family home market, he realized he could make more profit there. He connected with Doug Brien who had a similar idea, and they started buying homes and renting them out, with a long-term selling strategy.People thought they were going to cap out because of the sheer amount of management and upkeep, but their profits and vision said otherwise.17:00 “We said, ‘With all due respect, we think we can build a cloud-computing, mobile computing, infrastructure. A single system of record that our people use, but also the residents use, our vendors, we're all connected… and then we can build systems on top of that to automate a lot of the functionality or just systematize what happens so that it all runs smoothly so that we're not dropping balls.'”They raised a series of funds and continued to grow Waypoint (now Invitation Homes) as the pioneers in the space. Eventually, Colony Starwood and Blackstone entered the arena, and that's when it really became a new industry. After 5 years, they went public as a REIT in a partnership with Starwood called Starwood Waypoint.“So when the big conservative, institutional investors saw that single-family rental is generating the same NOI margins as multi-family, then it was sort of ordained to be a legitimate asset class.”MyndAfter going public as Starwood Waypoint, Colin knew he wanted to strike out on his own again and be in an innovative, start-up environment. He saw how massive and fragmented it was, and how nobody was leveraging technology in the way that had revolutionized other industries. This reflection is what led him to start Mynd, and he quickly asked Doug to partner with him again.“It tends to be a full stack company that's providing a complete end to end service that's competing with the incumbents that disrupts an industry.”Property management is complex. From collecting rent, managing repairs and maintenance, to leasing vacant units, Colin saw that accounting and the flow of money were integral to the solution he wanted to create. With these priorities in mind, they began creating a software with an accounting platform from scratch, that gives a property owner a real-time transparent view of what's going on at their property in a revolutionary way.Their strategy is focused on expanding into new markets like San Diego and Seattle, by acquiring property management principals and then shifting them into their own software. This streamlines the property managers job and improves their service while giving Mynd a spokesperson in that community.Looking forward, Colin is excited to use their data to offer new products and services, like owners insurance, vacancy insurance, and financing products to renters in a much more efficient way.For Colin, giving renters a better experience isn't just about good business, it's about human dignity. He is confident that by helping renters have a better experience, Mynd is helping society transition from a renters society to an owners society. When he's not thinking of innovative new ideas, Colin has a philanthropic partnership with Wildlife Works Carbon to protect the Panama Rainforest.AdviceReal estate is known for being a slow-moving industry. However, if you are young, nimble, and willing to take a chance, there is a huge opportunity to innovate the space.

The first thing you'll notice about AriZona co-founder Don Vultaggio's office is that it’s immense. We’re talking the size of an average apartment and fashioned with old-school sensibilities; think lots of wood, marble and leather. The second thing you'll notice is the commercial kitchen to the left of the entrance, conveniently staffed by a private chef. The grandeur and amenities are to be expected for the office of a billionaire and one of the richest people in the world. After a few minutes of conversation with Vultaggio, however, it is easy to envision him being just as comfortable in his first office at a beer distribution company that serviced some of the grittiest neighborhoods of Brooklyn. He cut his teeth in that rough-and-tumble world, whose inhabitants are bonded by blood, sweat and tears. And in an interview included in this episode, he explained why AriZona’s success and business principles are directly tied to his early career experiences. “Work hard and be consistent,” he said. “And consistency is hard to do, because it means you’ve got to be disciplined in a direction. And you can’t give up. Because there are things that [are] successful today that we had to dig deep for.” In the following interview, Vultaggio, flanked by his two sons and AriZona co-owners Wesley and Spencer, retraced his steps from his early days as a beer distributor to the development and continuing rise of AriZona, including why he views the tea brand as “an accident.” He also discussed how the company has maintained its iconic 99 centpricing model for 26 years, why he views AriZona as “one big incubator,” the importance of over-delivering on promises, and why running a business means handling all kinds of problems, even if it means mopping up blood. Show notes: 3:07: Don Vultaggio, Co-Founder/Chairman, AriZona; Wesley & Spencer Vultaggio, Co-Owners, AriZona -- BevNET Managing Editor Ray Latif met with Don Vultaggio and his sons Wesley, AriZona’s chief creative officer, and Spencer, its CMO, at AriZona HQ on Long Island for a wide-ranging interview that covered the past, present and future of the company. Among topics of conversation: how AriZona’s focus on building efficiencies into its business model has separated it from the competition, why despite never adopting a traditional marketing strategy, the brand’s “cultural relevance is stronger than ever,” and the company’s approach to investing in better-for-you beverages. Don also explained why AriZona “is built to sell drinks, not to sell the business” and how his relationship with golf legend and AriZona partner Jack Nicklaus taught him the value of over-delivering on promises. SVCC 2018: In Conversation With Trip Hunter (Silicon Valley Comic Con, Co-Founder / Chairman) In 2016, Trip Hunter and tech icon Steve Wozniak set out to create an event that stood apart from the herd of comic and pop culture conventions by designing a show that also showcased the brightest and best in science and technology. In the three years Silicon Valley Comic Con has been running, it has set out its stall as a unique and defining event, leading the charge for other shows to embrace the esoteric and the eclectic when it comes to its content. Here, AEISD Leonard Sultana takes time to talk to Trip about the shows history, its defining remit, the unique quality of its Special Guests and what makes SVCC stand out from other comic cons. We also talk about that very term - 'comic con' - and what it means, applied to SVCC, about what it takes to curate the guests for an event like SVCC in the broad, contemporary comic con landscape, and also where Special Guest Stan Lee sits in that guest pantheon, as well as Stan's health and current commitment to the show. Enjoy! Thanks to Trip for his generous time in conducting this interview, and also to Dan Berry and Stacy Miles in arranging it. Much appreciated!

Nolan Bushnell is a technology pioneer, entrepreneur and engineer. Often cited as the father of the video game industry, he is best known as the founder of Atari Corporation and Chuck E. Cheese. Currently, he is Co-Founder/Chairman at Modal VR, HearGlass Inc. and Brainrush, where he is devoting his talents to enhancing and improving the educational process by integrating the latest in brain science.  Atari was started in September 1970. Everything about it was hard. This was before the microprocessor was invented. It was a ‘paranoid’ company; it always felt like others were at their back. Mostly, there was a sense of urgency to get things to market within the shortest time possible.   It was also a very innovative culture. Perhaps the first to have a beer tap in the office! The ‘beer light’ was lit every night at 6 pm – people were encouraged to come in and share their problems and also their ideas. This informal communication style was purposeful; there were no executive parking spots. This egalitarian company had flexible hours and an open vacation policy. The emphasis was making sure the job was done, rather than where and when it was done.  Bushnell says that they tried to have a flat organizational style. The best management was by cheerleading rather than assigned tasks. Leaders would make sure the desired outcomes were clear but it allowed for each employee to become passionate about the job they wanted rather than the one they were assigned.   One of his techniques was having a plan he called ‘rotating to excellence’. This required that someone was fired every month. He acknowledges that this is difficult but if you fire the ‘worst employee’ every month, eventually you will end up with a stellar company.   Nolan mentioned that he regrets having exited from Atari when he did – believing that there were a lot of things that he could have accomplished, that fell by the wayside after he left.   What you will learn in this episode:  How less than $1000 launched the video game industry  Why the ‘Pong’ ball was square instead of round  Why Nolan will never ‘retire’  What it was like to work with Steve Jobs  How the Tiki room at Disney helped create Chuck E. Cheese  Nolan’s view of the world of technology and how things are changing  Why it is important to read science fiction
