VAVO have been making music together for the past 9 years, but it wasn't until they put a remix out of Morgan Wallen that they realized their niche of YEEDM (Yeehaw Dance Music). Since then they've released several remixes and originals, and performed at amazing places like Stagecoach Festival, EDC Las Vegas and the 2024 ACM awards. They are performing in Jacksonville on April 5th (Doc screws up and says the 4th in the show), and Jesse Fischer was nice enough to stop by the show! During the interview Jesse and Doc talk about performing with Pauly D, going to Miami, getting started as a DJ, the influence of Avicii, playing at the ACM awards, the perception of YEEDM and much much more! Meanwhile on the rest of the show, Mike and Doc get into the details of what Dolly Parton is eating at Taco Bell. Many experts are saying the age of eligibility for New Zealand's bowel screening programme should be lowered. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world, and it kills over 1200 Kiwis each year. A new study says cases picked up through the screening programme are 50 percent less likely to become fatal. Co-author and Waikato Hospital colorectal surgeon Dr Jesse Fischer says there's 'indisputable' evidence that screening under-60s will save lives. "Since the programme's been introduced, we've essentially been missing 20 percent of the cancers we could've been finding if we were screening from the age of 50." Research has shown that family environment is a significant predictor of outcomes when it comes to traumatic brain injuries. But how can family environment, things like parenting, intimacy, and communication styles impact outcomes in children and adolescents with learning challenges? Turns out, family environment has a huge impact on the way every child's brain develops and Dr. Jesse Fischer joins the conversation today to help us understand how. In this episode, Dr. Fischer, a licensed clinical neuropsychologist specializing in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, explains what family environment factors are and how they are taken into consideration when assessing a child with learning differences. Many of these factors actually change the way the brain develops, but because of the brain's plasticity, it's never too late to make a change if needed. Show Notes: [2:32] - There's a huge emphasis on the academic side of learning support, but family environment is also important. [4:16] - With a comprehensive assessment, more than academic testing is looked at. [5:27] - Family environment factors are not looked at in a way to place any kind of blame, but to understand the level of support possible for the child. [6:55] - When it comes to traumatic brain injuries, family environment is a significant predictor of outcomes. [8:56] - Certain factors stand out like caregiver/child relationships and caregiver strain. [10:51] - These factors are impactful but are modifiable. [14:03] - Parenting styles can buffer some of the issues that pop up. Research shows that nurturing and warm parenting styles predict better outcomes. [15:56] - Family environments show differences in the trajectory of brain development. [18:28] - With resource support, families can find access to the opportunities they need. [19:16] - Family-focused intervention and family counseling has been proven to be effective. [20:29] - What can we as a society do to promote strong family environments through support and policies that allow parents to provide what they want for their families? [23:20] - Clinicians can promote positive family environments through clear communication, advocating for policy change, and providing resources. [25:10] - The plasticity of the developing brain lasts into a person's 20s. We have multiple opportunities throughout development to intervene. [26:51] - Your body, including your brain, is one big system and all of these factors are connected. [29:08] - It's worth the struggle to get at these factors and find ways to optimize sleep, physical activity, and nutrition. [32:24] - If resources are a barrier, there are avenues in the community that can help. [33:47] - Reach out to a professional if you need additional support and guidance. For the second part of this week's exploration of new and upcoming releases we "Focus". As in... we compare and contrast the music from that iconic 'saxophone & strings' album by Stan Getz with the two more recent CDs-both entitled "Re Focus"-by Tim Garland and Silvayn Rifflet which Getz's 1961 masterpiece inspired. The latter was orchestrated by the great French bass player and arranger Fred Pallem who is about to release a fascinating project dedicated to fairy tales in the key of jazz, which sounds... fabulous, of course, just like the prohibition era fairy tales narrated by another bass player (this time he's back on sousaphone) that is writing fundamental new pages in the Chicago jazz book, Matt Ulery [pictured] This and much more in this edition of Mondo Jazz. Happy listening! The playlist features also Jesse Fischer; Takuya Kuroda; Darrifourq, Hermia, Ceccaldi; Tigran Hamasyan. Now that the retrograde is behind us, so are the things that are better off left there. A few things that have come and gone may very well become relics, some fossils, and others potentially end up in museums, documenting landmarks from eras of yesteryear. The latter, after have been found intriguing and harvested by an eager curator, become exhibits and experiences for those that appreciate the preservation of precious things. If there is nothing new under the Sun, then there should be no problem accepting the fact that the songs contained in this aural elixir are anything but that. Ironically, dated… they are not. Therein lies the beauty of being ahead of one's time. Several works represented here are more than a decade beyond their original release years, yet they are light years away from many tunes heard in today's conventional establishments, thus providing the reason, and the rhyme for the alternative. This kosmik occasion includes Africans, Asians,Australians and Europeans, representing a wide spectrum for the palette. Headbangers by Taylor McFerrin and E.Badu envelop broken joints by UK heroes the Bugz, Jazzanova and Beady Belle. ATLien Justin C. Gilbert's keys and the STLien Bradd Young's vocals make for a proper romp in the sack, after the frequency foreplay paves the way by third eye(and ear) by openers from other dimensional GB, and Jesse Fischer's melted veins. The die and spell has been cast, come get a fix. Enjoy... 68th Dimension- GB Vein Melter- Jesse Fischer & Sly5thAve Decisions- Taylor McFerrin ft. Multi-woodwind player Yacine Boularès is the bandleader of Ajoyo, which means "celebration" in Yoruba. It's a fitting name for a group whose songs represent a joyous, whirlwind synthesis of jazz, soul and African music. As a Fulbright Laureate, Yacine attended the New School for Jazz, where the French-Tunisian musician first met and collaborated with vocalist/composer Sarah Elizabeth Charles. Ajoyo's self-titled debut features the two-time TMT guest (episodes #21 & #36) on six of the eight titles. Sarah served as my introduction to Ajoyo and was also my entry point to pianist Jesse Fischer. Listen to companion episode #56 of TMT to hear my conversation with Jesse. Yacine was recently awarded a French American Jazz Exchange grant to produce his new trio with cellist Vincent Segal and drummer Nasheet Waits. The project will premiere next year with an album plus performances. Hopefully, 2016 will also see the sophomore Ajoyo release. Three a piece. That's it. It's just a sampler of their recent work to hopefully leave you wanting more. I'm sure it will. 2015 has been an eventful year for pianist/composer/producer Jesse Fischer. He released two records that managed to reveal multiple aspects of his talent. First there was Vein Melter, a collaboration with horn player Sly5thAve, that was a powerful reimagining of Herbie Hancock's 70's fusion masterpiece, Headhunters. Then in September, Jesse returned as a bandleader with the diverse, poignant Day Dreamer that found him adding lyrics to his music for the time. Day Dreamer stars vocalist/composer and two-time TMT guest (episodes #21 & #36), Sarah Elizabeth Charles, on four titles. In addition to introducing me to Jesse, Sarah was also my connection to the group Ajoyo, who are led by multi-woodwind player Yacine Boularès with Sarah as the featured vocalist. Listen to companion episode #57 of TMT to hear my conversation with Yacine. Visit Jesse Fischer online: http://www.jessefischer.com/ *****In my intro and outro, I mistakenly refer to Jesse's Vein Melter collaborator Sly5thAve as "Sly5thAvenue". My apologies to him.
