Fresh off a tour opening for Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Dion shares his takes on musical exploration, genre development, and collaboration. Dion Kerr is a forward-thinking, multi-dimensional artist (multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger, songwriter, photographer, and videographer) born and raised in South Florida.  Kerr's work reflects a broad range of influences and mediums.  He has toured and recorded worldwide as a leader and a sideman to various groups spanning multiple genres. Dion Kerr displays his unwavering talent as a producer, multi-instrumentalist, and conceptual artist.  Utilizing acoustic and electric elements, he blends a wide range of influences and styles into a cohesive sound that expands the limitations of genre-bound music. There are hints of Dion's eclectic taste in his records' melodic groove-based instrumentals. Experimentation is essential in Dion's process and is always represented in vivid fluidity. Dion can be seen at some of the most renowned festivals, venues, studios, and galleries with many great young and upcoming artists of all art forms.  Kerr has shared the stage with Ignacio Berroa, Nicholas Payton, Lillias White, Godwin Louis, Jean Caze, Emmet Cohen, Immanuel Wilkins, Justin Brown, Tivon Pennicott, and most recently Marcus Strickland coming off of their European tour of festivals and venues such as Ronnies Scott's in London.  Dion co-founded the band The Smoogies, who released their debut album Planet Smoogies with trumpeter Nicholas Payton and People Music; they are set to release their next record, a live album, in 2024.  Dion was the lead engineer and co-producer of Seafoam Walls record XVI; he also played guitar (formerly bass) in the live incarnation, released on Thurston Moore and Eva Printz's label Ecstatic Peace Library, which was recorded and produced in his home studio.  They recently got off tour, opening up for Unknown Mortal Orchestra for their US tour dates, and have secured a sponsorship with Fender.  He is also a key member in many other highly sought-after bands in South Florida and New York art scenes.   His musical career began early on by being billed with the Dave Leibman quartet while he was still in High School, leading them to reconnect at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in NY, where he attended school on scholarship.  He has been seen at venues and festivals such as The Blue Note, Sevilla Jazz Festival, Martinique Jazz Festival, Ground Up Festival, Guatemala Jazz Festival, Quebec City Jazz Festival, Young Jazz Festival, Casa Del Jazz, and Adrienne Arsht Center. He has toured North America and Europe extensively with different bands.  Dion has scored music for films featured at SXSW, New Orleans Film, and Miami Film Festivals.   Dion Kerr's new solo record, set to be released in 2023, follows up his latest releases, Ivy, which also features Jeff Parker, Bubby Lewis, Adam O'Farrill, Reptile Ground, Echoes of Lost Time, and Ruby.  His new record showcases his expansive musical knowledge and arranging abilities, featuring himself on bass, vocals, recording, production, and mixing.  His YouTube series Dialogues has been his most recent outlet, which features a wide variety of musical artists that he performs together in an intimate duo setting, which showcases the individuality of each featured artist and how a musical conversation can take place in hopes of bringing people more together. Lauded musicians Josh Evans and Marcus Strickland join Milestones to discuss the debut album from saxophone giant Joe Henderson. Together they examine Henderson's harmonic and rhythmic innovation; the essentiality of collaborator and friend Kennny Dorham; and why it's always the right time to give flowers to one of the most important yet somehow underexplored musicians of our time. As members of Christian McBride's New Jawn, they share thoughts on the special relationship between the saxophone and trumpet in small group formats and why Henderson and Dorham are at the top of the list of dynamic duos.

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

When it comes to instruments that are not easily designed for improvising soloists, there is perhaps none more difficult to handle than the harp. And when it comes to contemporary jazz harpists, there is perhaps none more influential in this moment than Brandee Younger.  From the very beginning, as a young music student growing up on Long Island, Brandee Younger was toeing the line between her classical, orchestral musical education and the hiphop, soul and pop music that she grew up loving. She spent her early years musically code switching, trying to figure out how to make sense of her sensibilities.  But for those who listened closely to the samples on records by Jay Z, Pete Rock, The Pharcyde, J. Dilla, or Common it was clear that the sound of the harp had become part of the language of modern music.  Many of the harp samples heard on those in early hip hop records featured two African American women, who, like Brandee, learned to thrive beyond their perceived limitations: Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. Eventually both Ashby and Coltrane would become two of her biggest influences.  Younger eventually made history as the first Black female solo artist to be nominated for a Grammy - for Best Instrumental Composition in 2021, for “Beautiful is Black” from her album Somewhere Different. She has also worked with the likes of Beyonce, John Legend, Drake & Lauryn Hill, as well as jazz artists including Christian McBride, Kat Edmonson, Marcus Strickland, Kassa Overall, Makaya Mccraven, and Ravi Coltrane. On her recently released album Brand New Life she honors Dorothy Ashby and enlists icons of hip-hop and R&B, including Pete Rock, Mumu Fresh & Meshell Ndegeocello. The album was produced by Makaya Mccraven.  We spoke recently about her journey from orchestra girl to emerging icon, the challenges of playing the harp in a contemporary context, and why she's done running from the harp police and the jazz police. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

Welcome to Episode #118 of the Blue-in-Green:PODCAST which this week sees Imran connect with guitarist and founder of jazz trio, Wild Card, Clement Regert. With a core trio comprised of Regert, Hammond organist Andrew Noble and Sophie Alloway on drums, the trio get set to unveil their sixth studio album. Having initially played together in 2011 at a club where Regert hosted a residency, the chemistry proved undeniable and the trio have - thankfully - remained together ever since. With the brand new Wild Card album release due at the end of this month, 'Cabin 19 Fever' serves as a reflection of the extensive quarantine period brought on by a certain worldwide pandemic - with the majority of the album written and recorded separately, the circumstances would go on to open the doors to working with collaborators both old and new including Marcus Strickland, Rosie Turton, Binker Golding and Maurice Brown amongst ten other sensational names. Wild Card's blend of high energy, funk-filled and Latin-laced jazz is once again on full display on 'Cabin 19 Fever' - they've become a band that continually find ways to out do themselves and raise the bar with each release so check out the episode to hear Imran and Clement discuss the new album, its collaborators, quarantine life as a creative and as a touring musician. www.blueingreenradio.com TuneIn: bit.ly/2LBK0BD The Blue-in-Green:PODCAST runs in conjunction with the online radio station, Blue-in-Green:RADIO which celebrates 21st century soul, jazz, funk, Latin & hip-hop music. Sortie du double album Black Lives, From Generation To Generation chez Jammin'colorS. Black Lives from Generation to Generation Jammin'colorS / l'Autre Distribution. Black Lives from Generation to Generation Jammin'colorS / l'Autre Distribution. A solo and collaborative journey dissolving perceived genre and technology lines.  His band and concept project, Twi-Life deals with the connection and intersection between jazz and Soul & Hip Hop as inspired by the J Dilla aesthetic of intricacy, “drunk drumming” and tonal nuance. Strickland becomes beat maker, composer as well as saxophonist on these projects. The saxophonist has nine releases as a leader: People of the Sun (2018), Nihil Novi (2016) on Blue Note Records; Triumph of the Heavy, Vol 1 & 2(2011), Idiosyncrasies (2009), Open Reel Deck (2007), & Twi-Life (2006) on his own music label Strick Muzik (launched in 2006); Of Song (2009)on Criss Cross Records; Brotherhood (2002) & At Last (2001) on Fresh Sound Records. In addition to his own Twi-Life, trio and quartet, Strickland has played with Christian McBride, Dave Douglas, Jeff 'Tain' Watts, and also had a five-year stint with the drummer Roy Haynes. We had the pleasure of interviewing José James over Zoom video! Out now, the jazz voice of the hip hop generation José James (Rainbow Blonde Records) releases his first ever Christmas album Merry Christmas from José James. In addition to the album release, José also premieres the official performance video for the original track "Christmas in New York" today. The contemporary album celebrates the holiday season while honoring classic jazz and pop records of the 1950s. Combining the classic jazz-crooner elegance of Frank Sinatra and Nat “King” Cole with the earthy sophistication of soul legends Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, the ten track Merry Christmas from José James takes listeners on a world-class holiday experience from one of the greatest living voices in jazz.Listeners can find two original tracks, “Christmas in New York” and “Christmas Day” along with popular ballads such as “The Christmas Song,” “White Christmas,” “Let it Snow” and “This Christmas,” a modern twist on the Donny Hathaway holiday favorite. In James' version, he musically brings an aspect of R&B and hip-hop to the mostly Jazz collection.Songwriting for the project was spearheaded by José James and his partner, recently Grammy nominated Talia Billig. The album's studio band features Grammy winning and nominated all stars Ben Williams (bass), Aaron Parks(piano), Jharis Yokley (drums) and Marcus Strickland (soprano saxophone). Produced by José James and Brian Bender and recorded by Ariel Shafir at Dreamland Studios, the album was mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios. The session was recorded completely live on 2” tape and mixed in LCR (left-center-right) by Brian Bender at Motherbrain West.“It's the perfect album to put on whenever there's a certain spirit in the air,” James says. “I hope that people can feel a little bit of the joy and the wonder, year round, that 8-year-old José felt, not only about Christmas and all the obvious things—the ornaments, the tree, the holiday season—but also the music,” he continued.A 13 date tour to support the album will launch at SF Jazz in San Francisco on November 27th and conclude at New York's City Winery on December 14th. Stops also include Seattle, Portland, Santa Cruz, LA, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Minneapolis and Chicago. (All tour dates listed below). About José James James, a Minneapolis, MN native who spent most of his career in New York, was discovered by Gilles Peterson in London before his major label debut with Blue Note Records. He has produced and written 11 albums covering the best of jazz, pop, hip-hop and R&B. In 2017, José made his screen debut with a performing role in Fifty Shades Darker. He now lives in Amsterdam with Talia Billig, his partner and Grammy nominated songwriter. We want to hear from you! A public health scientist by training, Dr. Jennifer Galvin left a fast-track academic career path to pursue filmmaking. She had a knack for finding narrative in the numbers and wanted to use her research and storytelling abilities to put a face on societal problems and solutions. She was selected to the American Film Institute's 2004 Catalyst Workshop for science storytelling and screenwriting, and to the 2006 Pan Caribbean Project for Documentaries Residency at EICTV, Cuba. In 2006 she founded reelblue, an independent film production and media company based in New York. Her feature film directorial debut was the prized documentary Free Swim (2009), which continues to travel the globe to reduce youth drowning, promote diversity in ocean-related sports, and ignite community coastal conservation. While she most loves having the camera in her hands, Galvin's ability to direct, produce, write, and shoot led her to being compared to a Swiss Army knife when named to the 2014 GOOD 100, representing the vanguard of artists, activists, entrepreneurs, and innovators from over 35 countries making creative impact. Her feature documentary The Memory of Fish (2016) was one of three Wildscreen Panda Award Best Script nominees—the highest accolade in the wildlife film and TV industry, dubbed the ‘Green Oscars'; it was also named to “The Definitive List of River Movies” by American Rivers. More recently she directed/produced the award-winning music video On My Mind (2020), starring Storyboard P and vanguard musicians Marcus Strickland, Pharoahe Monch, and Bilal, that debuted on AFROPUNK, and she produced The Antidote (2020), a feature film exploring kindness in America that qualified for an Oscar for Best Documentary. This summer Galvin produced Tuskegee Legacy Stories (2021), a 5-part public health campaign for Ad Council featuring descendants of the USPHS Syphilis Study at Tuskegee to build back trust in medicine. She is currently developing projects spanning fiction and nonfiction. Commercial to indie, documentary to fiction, moving image to print—her motivations remain fueled by the maxim “protect the vulnerable.”

Blige and Big K.R.I.T. He was also picked by Robert Glasper and Don Cheadle to be the trumpet player on the soundtrack to the movie Miles Ahead in 2016. His music is a hybrid sound that combines jazz, funk, R&B, hip-hop, rock, and some really nice string orchestrations. The Mugician is a major artistic statement, one that fits in with the work people like Glasper, Christian Scott, Terrace Martin and others are doing, but is definitely its own thing. At the same time, it extends a long history of jazz musicians engaging with the popular sounds of the time, whether it’s Herbie Hancock embracing funk in the '70s and hip-hop in the '80s or trumpet players like Donald Byrd and Eddie Henderson, who made albums that were straight-up disco records but still included some serious blowing. In this episode, we discuss both of his albums and why he took nine years between them; his work with other musicians; the Miles Ahead experience; his support of Black Lives Matter and his childhood growing up in Ferguson, Missouri; and much more. Here's a list of the songs you'll hear in this episode: Keyon Harrold, "The Mugician" (The Mugician) Various Artists, "Junior's Jam" (Miles Ahead) Keyon Harrold, "TMF Nuttz" (Introducing Keyon Harrold) Various Artists, "What's Wrong With That" (Miles Ahead) Marcus Strickland, "Sissoko's Voyage" (Nihil Novi) Christian Sands, "Frankenstein" (Facing Dragons) Keyon Harrold, "Ethereal Souls" (The Mugician)

E.J. and I spoke about his love for music and how this love has to evolve as you grow and change. He also touched on the challenges he faced throughout his career and how those things were integral for him to bring his dreams to life. E.J. is an amazing musician who understands that giving is the key to a success. We also touched on the violence that has plagued the Afro-American from the hands of the "Authorities". Overall this interview gives you a birds-eye view into the mind of E.J. and the heart of the community as a whole. Connect with E.J. here www.ejstricklandmusic.com Bio: Enoch Jamal “E.J.” Strickland is the world-class, world-travelled drummer, composer, educator, and artist you've heard on over 60 albums in the last 10-plus years. The Miami native grew up in a creative household, where his dad was a percussionist in the Ft. Lauderdale Orchestra; his twin brother Marcus played the saxophone; and where E.J. beat on pots, pans, and tables until he finally got his hands on the drums. He was only in middle school, yet E.J. knew then that jazz was his calling. Where does one go as a young jazz musician, serious about the work? New York City, of course. Like so many talented artists before him, E.J. chose the New School to further his jazz education, a course of study that would introduce him to greater technical ability, but really, to the meat of any jazz program: teachers and peers. Reggie Workman. Buster Williams. Billy Harper—just to name a few of the living legend, caring instructors who guided E.J. during his tenure. And the peers? Friends who would spend almost every moment together, growing as young musicians and future leaders of the sound: Mike Moreno, Robert Glasper, Brandon Owens, and Marcus Baylor. Together, they formed a group that would shape their voices, and establish their careers. E.J. quickly graduated into New York's gigging jazz scene, playing early on with Russell Malone and Ravi Coltrane. Both artists proved to be big brother types for E.J., gently guiding him as he established his voice. “Russell really stressed the point that as a drummer, you're supposed to make the music feel good,” he says. “I always try to remember what he instilled in me.” Ravi Coltrane lent a similar kind of open-ended guidance, telling E.J. to simply “find something” in the music. Just what that would be was up to him. Since then, Strickland has built a successful career as a composer, bandleader, educator, and sideman. He's toured, performed, and recorded with some of the greatest names in contemporary music: Cassandra Wilson, Terence Blanchard, Lizz Wright, Wynton Marsalis, George Colligan, David Gilmore, Vincent Herring, and Nnenna Freelon, to name a few. As an instructor, he's taught alongside some of the world's best jazz educators: Dave Douglas and Vijay Iyer at the prestigious Banff International Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music, Steve Kirby at the University of Manitoba, and Earl MacDonald at the University of Connecticut. As a leader, he's released two albums: 2009's In This Day featuring Marcus Strickland, Jaleel Shaw, Luis Perdomo, and Hans Glawischnig in a blend of musical settings. His most recent release, The Undying Spirit “positively glows…its success comes largely from the leader's ability to inspire the best in his fellow musicians,” says Brian Zimmerman, Downbeat Magazine. Nick Bewsey in Icon Magazine calls E.J. “an artist with a clear and sensible vision: that a drummer-led jazz record should give listeners an opportunity to get their groove on.” Variety—of influence and interest—might be the keyword for E.J. in his creative approach. He studied both classical and Latin percussion, working early on with the great Cuban drummer Ignacio Berroa. “Growing up, we listened to all kinds of music in the house,” he says. “Miles, Stevie; just good music.” He's applied his wide-ranging tastes to the artists he plays with today: funk and fusion with pianist Manuel Valera's Groove Square; Latin jazz... This week at the top of the hour I kick it off with a song of the new Marcus Strickland album, 'Nihli Novi' which features the likes of Robert Glasper & Meshell N'degeocello. 'Nihli Novi' is a brilliant album and feels like the sister of Terrace Martins 'Velvet Portraits'.After that I get into some hip hop heavy jams with Phonte, AstroLogical, Blue Lab Beats, Junior Mafia, Holy Sock Gang, & Tek.lun.I finish the show with that dance vibe you know and love on Ninth Wave. Diana Ross, Nick Wisdom, Henry Wu, The Pendletons & J-Louis pepper the groove heavy second half and I finish with a cherry on top in the form of Kimmortal who will be representing Vancouver at SXSW this week w/ Jay Worthy, I M U R, Peach Pit, Little Destroyer and more!GET DOWN TO THIS and I'll see you next week.

Malachi Rivers is a New York City based rapper, poet, and actor whose lyrical soulfulness and avant-garde music making has earned national and international acclaim. A native of Maryland, Malachi cultivated a strong following in D.C.’s metropolitan music and spoken word scene before moving to New York City where his career quickly blossomed and he became a regular in the city’s staple music venues, including the Nuyorican Poets Café and SOB’s. Malachi’s lyrical skills and performances garnered the attention of Grammy nominated jazz musician Marcus Strickland, who asked Malachi to be the sole voice in his “Twi-Life” group and record the group’s debut album Open Reel Deck. The Village Voice touted Malachi as being able to persuade you with his lyrical abilities, writing: “Malachi recites and cajoles over a state of the art Jazz band.” The Denver Post likened him to the great jazz and soul singer poet Gil Scott-Heron. Shortly after the release of Open Reel Deck, Malachi toured with the “Twi-Life” collective, which performed at New York City’s legendary Blue Note Jazz Club and subsequently joined forces with a rotating collective of artists for a North American and European tour. During this period, Malachi released his debut single “Cloud 9”, which became an online favorite, and starred in two independent films Scrolls the Book of Life Part 1 and 2. He also ramped up to launch a solo project, which he released in the summer of 2012 to much buzz. The debut EP, Stereo Sound Escape, became an internet sensation, anchored by its lead single “A New World Part II - The Schizo Speaks” featuring HBO’s True Blood star Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette).
