It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me, here with an update to one of our most-streamed episodes of all time, the cult of exalted idol bestie goddess mother queen angel (no, that's not pandering to the standom! They're not intimidating at all!), Taylor Swift. Somehow, the pop icon's “cult” has only exploded in size and religiosity since our last discussion, which was uploaded right as Midnights was dropping, pre-Eras Tour. Needless to say, there's a lotttttt to catch up on. Whether you stan Taylor til the death or truly do not get what all the fuss is about, we hope you enjoy this part 2!! To check out Amanda's new book, The Age of Magical Overthinking, click here! Head to Isa Medina's IG or website to tell her where to perform stand up, keep up with her work and learn more about her new podcast coming in 2024. The Magical Overthinkers newsletter can be found here. Follow us on IG @soundslikeacultpod I was never good at telling jokes but the punchline goes: If Taylor told her Swifties to kill a man, they would. They would kill a man for Taylor, because her music means *that* much to them. But the "cult" of country-pop sensation Taylor Swift is not just about the music. It's about the Swiftie community, the rituals, the beliefs, the aesthetic, and (of course) Taylor's cult of personality. This extreme fandom definitely seems classically culty, but is it dangerous just because it's fanatical? That's the question on Amanda and Isa's agenda today, and they've solicited pop culture connoisseur Jill Gutowitz, author of the essay collection GIRLS CAN KISS NOW, to help them figure it out.
In September 2002, the Russian pop duo t.A.T.u. released their smash single "All The Things She Said." The song is a grungy euro-dance track, and the video features the lead singers Lena Katina and Julia Volkova dressed in schoolgirl uniforms and making out in the rain. The video was banned from UK television for being "not really suitable for children." That did not stop the song from becoming a global sensation. It topped the charts in 13 countries, and in the United States the duo would perform the song over and over on live television. During performances, they made a point to do as they did in their video and make out.But here's the thing: neither Katina or Volkova identified as lesbians or queer at the time. From Harry Styles to Katy Perry, debates over queerbaiting have raged online, and t.A.T.u.'s "All The Things She Said" fits squarely in that lineage. But despite roleplaying as lesbians for their own success, is there something redeemable in how they represented lesbianism at a time when no one else would put two women kissing on camera? And how should we look at this song today? It's Been A Minute senior producer Barton Girdwood talked this out with Girls Can Kiss Now author, Jill Gutowitz. You can email us at IBAM@npr.org.
Erin Ryan and Alyssa Mastromonaco celebrate Donny Trump's birthday by covering his second indictment and mocking the ugly bathroom where he hid classified federal documents. Plus, why is everyone at the Young Women's Leadership Conference full of…old and irrelevant conservative women gaslighting people into having babies? Then, Tien Tran and Jill Gutowitz come on to talk age-gap relationships: when it makes sense, when it's actively desirable, and when it's simply nasty. Catching up on some hot take submissions from the past couple months, we discuss the politics of "coming out," especially within the context of online queer fanbases bullying celebrities out of the closet re: Kit Connor (whom we mistakenly call the name of an American Girl Doll in this episode lol), Becky Albertalli, and the misusage of the term "queerbait" in the current media landscape. Sunny complains extensively about the popular liberal queer assimilationist politics especially as mediated by the internet, and references the following books this episode— The Society of the Spectacle by Guy DeBord, Lesbian Choices by Claudia Card, The Persistent Desire: A Butch-Femme Reader edited by Joan Nestle, and probably some other titles. We talk about using the word "dyke," the loneliness of lesbianism and isolation of navigating the world as someone who doesn't center men, history of autistic lesbians, and online queer community vs. IRL lesbian spaces (and the lack of them.) We discuss an essay collection we both adored but that Renaissance connected with on a spiritual and psychic level; Girls Can Kiss Now by Jill Gutowitz. We talk all about the lesbian pop culture hilarity it compasses, as well as how earnest and genuine the writing feels. Jill, please come on the podcast! For media recommendations, Sunny really enjoyed watching an Irish lesbian film A Date For Mad Mary (2016) in their COVID quarantine era, and Renaissance raves about Tár (2022).

episode 11 of season 3: an 80 minute episode from us???? crazy! in responding to a listener submitted hot take from Adin, we discuss our experiences with and how we engage with race/gender/perception and community as gaylor swifties of color, when a lot of the gaylor community seems to be white. Sunny mentions @sillygoofygirlseekinggf on Tik Tok, and Renaissance addresses their apprehension towards Taylor's shifting fan base. We discuss the queerness of hyper femininity and Taylor Swift's queerness, especially in regards to who and why some people recognize it. Simply put, the other pop girlies are not doing it like blondie! Renaissance also references Whitney Houston as an example of a woman existing in the public perception as an icon for the gay community, when she, like many other queer pop icons, was gay herself. Sunny references the Patreon exclusive bonus episode we recorded discussing the 1996 film The Watermelon Woman (dir. Cheryl Dunye.) ( btw join our Patreon for access to 2 bonus episodes a month as well as early access to episodes and the video recordings of episodes! https://www.patreon.com/TheLavenderMenace) For the media analysis portion of this episode, we talk hyperpop and rank + review the new Charli XCX album, CRASH. In our media recommendations, Renaissance pitches the 1927 silent film, Children of Divorce, which is surprisingly non-problematic and leads Sunny to mention Henry James' The Portrait of a Lady and Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie. Sunny's book recommendation this week is the recently released essay collection Girls Can Kiss Now by Jill Gutowitz, whom we discussed in our previous episode's hot take about the New York Post's shitty article about lesbian fashion. Jill, if you're listening, you should come on the podcast after Renaissance reads your book!!! Yesterday's "uber d*ke" is today's "it girl," and we've got Jill Gutowitz (Girls Can Kiss Now) on the pod to explain how we got here. Jill holds our triggered hands and walks us through the key moments in lesbian pop culture that scarred us, and eventually freed us. How is Perez Hilton different from wishful queers? Why hasn't Lindsay Lohan been herself? What is it about Neve Campbell's bangs? Also, what do milfs have to do with expressing desire for physical harm? We explore these questions and more. And, if you want even more on these topics, check out Jill's new book, Girls Can Kiss Now. If you love it, be sure to leave a positive review! Plus, both our gayest things involve music videos.
