Episode 257 features author, Joseph R. Haynes discussing his book on barbecue history and Josh Schaub, Commissioner of the American Association of Professional Baseball providing baseball fans with alternatives to the MLB.  Plus Jeff tells about his special weekend in Philadelphia   Joseph R. Haynes is an award winning barbecue cook, a Kansas City Barbeque Society Master Certified Barbecue Judge, and an author.  He also authored the Virginia Barbecue Proclamation that was unanimously passed by the Virginia State Legislature in 2016.  His latest tome, From Barbycu to Barbecue: The Untold History of an American Tradition offers a fresh new look at the story of southern barbecuing.  The book includes an analysis of historical sources throughout the Americas that show that the southern barbecuing technique is as unique to the United States as jerked hog is to Jamaica and barbacoa is to Mexico. A recipe in each chapter provides a contemporary interpretation of a historical technique.  Joined by guest co-host, Doug Scheiding, we all learn a lot about the history of the cooking method we love.    Josh Schaub is the commissioner of the American Association of Professional Baseball.  Schaub oversees their  operations, media, expansion, revenue initiatives, technology enhancements and emergence, public relations, and relationships in professional baseball.  He is the former CEO and co-owner of the Joliet Slammers baseball club of the Frontier League, a board member of the Frontier League and Prospect Leagues, and has previously worked in the Milwaukee Brewers scouting department as an intern and associate scout. Schaub also previously clerked for the Northern League. Additionally, Schaub has served as a consultant and legal counsel to numerous professional baseball teams for both business, legal, and baseball matters.  We discuss this excellent alternative to the Major Leagues which for some baseball fans is an opportunity to attend live games and root for a local team they are missing with the MLB.     We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We recommend you go to Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, Cutting Edge Firewood High Quality Kiln Dried Firewood - Cutting Edge Firewood in Atlanta for high quality firewood and cooking wood, Mantis BBQ, https://mantisbbq.com/ to purchase their outstanding sauces with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Kidney Project, and for exceptional sauces, Elda's Kitchen https://eldaskitchen.com/ We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.   If you would like to contact the show, we would love to hear from you. When and how to develop rotational power in your baseball swing Bill Miller is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist since 2017. He has a passion for learning, spreading and applying the most advanced methods of strength training for baseball players. Bill has worked with athletes from Little League through professional ranks. He played baseball collegiately at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, IL, graduating with a degree in Exercises Science. Played briefly in the Frontier Baseball League for the Joliet Slammers. He currently works at Dream Big Athletics in Palatine, IL and trains personal clients out of that space. Sammy and Bill discuss: “What’s the difference between a ball hit at 90 and 95 mph.” Why power and exit velocity seem to matter? With the athletes Bill trains what are the benchmarks he looks at on their way to 100mph exit velocity, and how does he train his athlete’s to generate more rotational power? What can athletes who are stuck at home do to keep developing that power? According to a recent article about the Dodgers they follow an old scouting mantra: power comes last. The Dodgers aggressively seek athletic, versatile players who hit for average and have strong plate discipline, believing they can teach those players to add power with swing tweaks if the contact skills and at-bat quality are already present. So why should we still train for power now? Follow Bill on Twitter and Instagram. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/playballkid/message
