This episode of the Kaijucast was recorded at last year’s G-Fest convention in Chicago, Illinois. August Ragone and I thought it would be a fun panel idea to go through the entirety of Gamera’s filmography (which at the time was just about 50 years old). By all accounts, we should have been able to do it, […]

Notes We then dive into a discussion about Kaiju films, of which John is an avid lover. First we talk about what sort of films Kaiju movies are. We talk about the terms Kaiju (Strange Beasts, or Dai Kaiju Great Strange Beasts) and Tanko Setsu:* Miniature work and filming technique that helps create the feeling of weight and mass. John talks about how the special acting styles of "rubber suit acting" helped create the unique look of the film. We talk about the amazing endurance and discipline that the actors, particularly Haruo Nakajima had, to do these performances. *I looked for the spelling of this term and simply was unable to find it, if anyone would like to correct me, please shoot me an email with the correct spelling, and I'll update the notes." We then go into the history of the Kaiju genre. John discusses the care and pride that Japanese film makers took to make the Kaiju films. We also talk about our experience with Kaiju films as kids. While going through the movies from the very beginning through the 70's, Ultraman, and more. We also talk about the 2014 Godzilla, and Pacific Rim. John's Links First up here is, what I would think, is a very complete film list of giant monsters. All the way from 1920's to present day. It's the Giant Monster Movie List! It lists the year, and the giant monster that features in the film. Here is the wiki page that lists all the Kaiju monsters that have appeared in cinema (at least as far as we know). There's a lot.John mentions this a few times during the episode, it's Kaijucast. And finally here is the documentary Hail to the King that Kaijucast produced, there's a lot of great interviews with the original cast and crew of the original Godzilla movie. It's pretty cool. Quotes: "These are not high budget films, but they are distinctly Japanese, and there is a lot of hard work that goes into doing them. And we need to be proud of that hard work that goes into doing them." -John "The Kaiju movie genre is something that is dear to me." -John Credits Episode 19: Kaiju FilmsHosts: Frank Shaw and John BellistonProduced by Hobos in the Back RowScripting by John Belliston and Frank ShawEdited by: Frank ShawGraphic Design by: Nathan NewellIntro Music: Piano Sonata mvnt 1 by F.G. Monster Kid Radio isn't the only monster-themed podcast in the Pacific Northwest. Kyle Yount has been talking about "Godzilla and all of his rubber-suited foes" on the Kaijucast since 2009. Since then, he's been able to do some amazing things, like introducing King Kong vs. Godzilla (dir. Ishirō Honda) at the in 2012 for that film's 50-year anniversary. At last weekend's , before Derek and the rest of the audience leaned back in their seats for the original Godzilla (dir. Ishirô Honda), two men took the stage to introduce the film. It’s time for another Daikaiju Discussion epsiode (#108) here at the Kaijucast. We’re taking a closer look at Nikkatsu Studios’ singular kaiju film, Gappa The Triphibian Monster (1967) – aka Monster From A Prehistoric Planet. It’s a special Valentine’s Day episode of the Kaijucast, but we aren’t talking about how much we love our significant others or even how much we adore Godzilla (any more than usual, I mean); we are discussing love themes and romantic elements in the history of Godzilla’s filmography. It’s probably not something that you would […]
Wow! Episode 100 AND the anniversary of the Kaijucast’s FIFTH year? What a coincidence, right? Nah, I just planned it that way…strategically. Ugh, I guess I should start out by saying “It’s still September in Hawaii!” …Welcome to another installment of the Kaijucast – episode 93, to be exact and squeaking in just before the world’s calendars flip to October! We are talking about the 1974 Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla this month. This film was one of the […]
In this episode of the Kaijucast, we take a closer look at one of the most recent kaiju movies, the Korean monster-on-the-loose film known as The Host (2006). Sure, it’s not japanese, but it’s a great movie and needs to be examined. It’s a bizarre film that plays more like a family drama than it […]
Chris McMillan has plenty more to say about Godzilla, and fortunately he said it to Derek here in Episode 28 of Monster Kid Radio! Chris and Derek continue their discussion about the King of the Monsters, as well as a few other Godzilla-related subjects (King Kong vs. Godzilla, anyone?). This film is such an important monster movie, and has stomped all over the minds of monster kids everywhere! Also, this is the FINAL week to enter the Matango Minibust (by Tom Biegler) contest! The Kaijucast’s Kyle Yount invited me to participate in a panel all about Japanese Giant Monsters at Crypticon Seattle last month! Kyle and Jeff Dean of Kaijucast, Aron Tarbuck from The Dreaming Comics and Games in Seattle, and I had a great time talking about our favorite kaiju, and what we think makes them significant. […] More

Welcome to another installment of the Kaijucast… episode 81 in fact! In this episode, Martin, Jeff and I talk about the 1958 monster movie Daikaiju Varan. It’s one of those early Toho films that was made when the studio was still tinkering with their own interpretation of the giant monster movie formula. We had a […]
I just finished tweaking and uploading the fourth audio commentary. Thanks to a poll on Kaijucast.com, we selected the 1966 not-really-a-sequel-to-Frankenstein–Conquers–The–World kaiju epic, War Of The Gargantuas. We watched the American version of the film because it was both available on DVD and on Netflix (at least at the time of this posting). I had … Continue reading

Episode 67 is here and we are talking with Keith Foster of the funk sensation Big Pimp Jones about their latest multimedia excursion, Kodoja: Terror Mountain Showdown. I had the pleasure of meeting Keith this summer in San Francisco and I really love/appreciate what he and his crew are doing. Kodoja is an album, a […]
Welcome to episode #66 of the Kaijucast, this month, the focus of our Daikaiju Discussion was the 1998 toho film (and the third in the trilogy), Rebirth of Mothra 3. While the film has it’s flaws and is definitely aimed squarely at an underage audience, we had a lot of fun watching it… even if […]
Holy smokes, you guys…. what an amazing time I had today at G-Fest. This was definitely the place for a live show to take place, so we just have to get more of these happening! This is episode 61 of the Kaijucast and I am joined in Chacago in front of a sizable crowd (for […]
Greetings, visitors, listeners and Godzilla fans everywhere. You have come across episode 58 of the Kaijucast and if you are up for something amazing, please keep reading. This month our Daikaiju Discussion focuses on a film that I thought I would never watch again (before I started the podcast of coure). But I must say […]
Greeting, kaiju fans! And hopefully kaiju comic book fans, as well… because for this episode of the Kaijucast we talk to IDW’s editor for their Godzilla series, Mr. Bobby Curnow. The last time we spoke to Bobby on the show was just before Godzilla: Kingdom Of Monsters was released and, boy, a LOT has happened […]
After a month, of being hyper focused on “the most colossal conflict the screen has ever known!”, I am so glad to finally bring you the daikaiju discussion episode of the Kaijucast. Otherwise known as Episode 56, Heather and I are here to spend almost an entire hour talking about the 1962 classic crossover film, King […]
Our second commentary is online! This one is for the 1962 King Kong vs. Godzilla and we watched the Universal DVD release. Along with myself, I was joined by Heather Brask and Jeff Dean (my co-hosts from the Kaijucast) for this commentary. We chose this film because the Hollywood Theatre here in Portland is showing … Continue reading
Hey kids, it’s time for episode fifty-five of the Kaijucast! This episode features not only Jeff, Heather and I talking about our experiences at Seattle’s Emerald City Comic-Con, I also have a very special interview with two listeners who came out for the listener party, Andy Campbell and Cody Cook! Which, if I must say […]
Why hello there, loyal listener and potential new recruit! Welcome to the newest installment of the Kaijucast (which just happens to be episode 54). I’ve actually brought you a shorter episode than normal – instead of an hour, the show is only fifty-seven minutes. I know, I know – you feel slighted! I can’t help […]
Greetings and salutations and welcome to another conversational episode of the Kaijucast (episode 53). This month, Jeff is out sick so Heather and I polled the listeners on facebook for potential topics of discussion. All of the suggestions were great, but we couldn’t possibly cover them all, so we chose to go with the handful […]
In this episode (which is #51) of the Kaijucast, Jeff Dean and I record on the road to Seattle, Washington. Why go to the Emerald City? Basically, around Xmas-time when my parents visited I went to the Experience Music Project and SciFi Museum, and I definitely didn’t get enough time into the exhibits. It’s a fantastic […]
Hey Kaijucast listeners! Welcome to episode #49 of the Kaijucast. Bad news, I’m getting over a killer head cold, so I was very happy to almost turn over the reins to some friends of mine. Ok, that’s not really what I did. But thanks to Skype and Bob Johnson setting up a cool recording space […]
Ahh, what a year this has been for the Kaijucast! And what a way to end it… with episode 48, the Daikaiju Discussion for 1995’s kaiju battle royale Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Obviously this is one of my favorite movies in the franchise and there’s not enough time in one podcast to talk about all that […]
Now that I’ve decompressed from our night of awesomeness that was the “Kaijucast Emergency Broadcast” (aka our live show), I’m able to post the audio from that TWO AND A HALF HOURS OF UNMITIGATED CHAOS! Seriously, this was a lot of fun, but clearly it went on too long. Why do we pack so much into […]
Greetings and salutations, Kaijucast fans and followers! Episode #46 is here and I’d like you all to prepare yourselves for a LOT of talking. “Why?” you might ask yourself. Because in this excursion into the land of giant rubber monsters, we take a look at the 1992 Toho tale known as Godzilla vs. Mothra. Jeff […]
In this very special episode of the Kaijucast, we are celebrating. Kind of … Ok, not really celebrating, but for my birthday, I got a new mixer and because of that I’m still tweaking the buttons, knobs and sliders. I think it sounds a lot better actualy, but let me know what you think. In […]
This particular episode (episode 41) may just go down as one of my favorites. Why, you might ask? Because our guest tonight on the Kaijucast is Adam Alexander of The Monster Project! What’s that? You haven’t heard of The Monster Project, you say?! You are in luck, sir or madame as the case may be, […]
Howdy, Godzilla fans! Episode number thirty seven is upon us and this month, the magic of the interwebs brings us an interview with the one, the only, long-time kaiju fan and artist Matt Frank. If the name sounds unfamiliar to you, Matt was the creator of the NeoGodzilla monster redesigns that have caught the eyes […]
I think I need to give myself a little more time to produce these Daikaiju Discussions! This is barely going to make it into the month of May, but I promised it would and here it is… episode 34 of the Kaijucast and this month we are talking all about the first Godzilla movie I […]
Konnichiwa, loyal listeners and welcome to episode 27 of the Kaijucast (which can be downloaded right here). It seems that at least once a year, I invite some casual/non-fans to the show in order to get their reaction to Kaiju films and this is the episode to do that. Sure it’s a poorly veiled loophole […]
Welcome to the second episode of the Kaijucast for 2011. Exciting times as we’re still in January and this is the first Daikaiju Discussion-centric show of the year. So this week I sat down with several of the guests from previous months: Martin Vavra, Cindy Okumoto, Jeff Dean and Dave Helfrey (better known as Baron […]
Wow. I mean…just… wow. This is the longest episode I’ve ever done. I really couldn’t find a good place to chop this down, so Merry Xmas, my loyal listeners – this is the best gift I can give you: a two hour episode! This month, my esteemed guests are Heather, David and Kurt from the […]
Mrrrrrrr… I’m kind of ill and needed to post this episode, so I don’t sound my best. But regardless, there’s some cool stuff to cover, but if you don’t like to read the blog post details, you can download the twenty-second episode of the Kaijucast right here. This month, I opted to not scout for […]
This month’s episode of the Kaijucast, which will be sneaking into it’s September position in the very last few hours, is the twenty-first show and available for download right here, features no special guest. Instead we delve into the subject of the upcoming 2012 Godzilla project from Legendary Pictures. Because I have no co-host for […]
Why hello there, listeners! I’m all settled in my new place and my monsters are on display in the all-new Kaijucast headquarters (it’s awesome, not only do I have room to display all of my collection and posters, I also have a killer kaiju theater going on here). While I am completely IN the new […]
Greetings, folks! The Kaijucast Headquarters is shipping out, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t get the newest episode online! Right? Yes, that is right. I’ve got more packing to do actually, so I’m going to make this quick and easy for you. Download the latest episode -which is incidentally the nineteenth Kaijucast show- right […]
The download you’ve all been waiting for, folks! Episode number EIGHTEEN is up and running and ready to tantalize your earbuds! For this episode of the Kaijucast, I travelled North to the Emerald City – otherwise known as Seattle for the 2010 Crypticon Horror Convention. I drove up specifically to be on a panel with […]
Ok, so I didn’t really rock San Francisco – just the Moscone Center, where Wondercon is held. Wondercon was really a fantastic convention and I was very psyched to have the opportunity to head down to the show. Aside from geeking out about comics and artists and everything else that was happening at the show […]
I didn’t have just one guest for this episode, I had SIX! That’s right, folks, the Kaijucast is all about Gigan for episode fifteen (which of course is available for download right here) and I was almost able to get every single local guest in to watch it (maybe next time, Rob!). This episode ran […]
So, after trimming the discussion to bits in order for the January episode to resemble something reminiscent of an hour long show, it dawned on me that I had to cut a lot of stuff that I would have liked to include. So, for the hardcore fans out there, I proudly present the almost unedited […]
Ho Ho Ho and welcome to the TWELFTH episode of the kaijucast. This month’s episode is a gift to all of the music lovers out there. I’ve been wanting to do an all-music show for some time now – just something that you can play in the background and not have to keep an ear […]
Where does the time go?? Is it really so close to the end of this month? Well regardless of my problems with time and space theory, it’s here! The new (sort of) episode of the Kaijucast! It was a little odd sitting here all by my lonesome with a microphone, so I am definitely not […]
It’s here! It’s here!! Special guest and close friend Jeff Dean from the online radio show, Horror Holocaust, joined me at the audio console for a really great time. Jeff is a pretty big Godzilla fan, so we decided to really let loose and actually ended up recording a two hour show. I decided to […]
