In addition, the guys talk about the Dream Bowl, and specifically the selection of BJ to the team in what very well may be the future Hall of Famer's final game. Greg has finally landed in Japan and has overcome his jet lag to sit down with BJ and review the upcoming slate of quarterfinal matches and a discussion as to who might be relegated to Area play in 2023. In this episode, BJ and Greg review the results of Week 4 in Super X-League play, from the blowouts to nail bitters, and look ahead to the teams on the bubble for relegation, and also on the rise in the Area division for promotion, including the Dentsu Caterpillars, whose star QB, and friend of the show, Aaron Ellis, did not respond to BJ's on air request. We have to assume he was busy at practice studying the playbook :-). Southern Californian Sara Price has been racing most of her life.  She first raced at the age of eight and by 16, she was racing professionally.  In 2010, she was the first female factory-supported motocross racer with Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing.  She has won 19 national motocross championships.  Prior to making the switch to four-wheeled racing in 2012, she also medaled in Women's Super X at the 2010 X Games, and holds the record as the winningest female amateur to date. She currently competes in Off-Road Desert racing in a Trophy Truck, and works as a stunt professional, performing on motorcycles and in vehicles, and as a precision driver for television and film.Sara recently returned for her second season with Chip Ganassi Racing after becoming the first driver announced for the new electric racing venture in Extreme E in 2021. Price is the first female driver for Chip Ganassi Racing in the team's 32-year history and was also the first female driver signed in the new Extreme-E series.  Price and her teammate Kyle LeDuc drive the No. 99 GMC HUMMER EV for Chip Ganassi Racing.  The Extreme-E series is the first sport built out of concern for the climate crisis. The series' goal is to use electric racing to highlight remote environments under threat of climate change issues, and to encourage us all to take positive action to protect our planet's future.  The five-race series goes to the extreme in Saudi Arabia, Italy (twice) Chile and Uruguay.

Episode 12: Winchester Model 12 A fitting subject for our 12th podcast and a follow-up to our previous report on the Remington 870, today we will be talking about Winchesters slide action or pump-action shotgun the Winchester Model 1912 or Model 12 as it has come to be known. If you caught our briefing on the Remington 870, you will no doubt remember that we mentioned the Winchester Model 12 in that discussion several times. Winchester's pump was the gun to look up to, the popular kid at school, the girl everyone wanted to dance with at the prom. The Model 12 reigned supreme until that oh so pivotal year in gun making - 1964 - when it was discontinued because of the increasing cost of manufacturing and increased competition from the less expensive Remington 870 and others.  Much like previously discussed subjects on this Podcast, the story of the Model 12 originates with its predecessors and with the legendary John Browning. John Browning's original patents for the Model 1893 and 1897 slide-action shotguns would serve as the basis for the Model 12.  The 93 and 97 were both exposed hammer guns, meaning the hammer that struck the firing pin was exposed at the tang. This was a carryover from earlier hammer-fired shotguns and rifles and gives these pumps a distinctive look. The rearward travel of the bolt out of the action would depress and cock the external hammer much like many very successful Winchester lever-action rifles. The 1893 was designed for the 2 and ⅝” black powder shells of the time. It was offered only in 12 gauge with 30 or 32” barrel and though it found some success its action was too weak to deal with the new smokeless powder shells being developed at the time. The 1897 took this into account and closed off the top portion of the action, allowing the bolt to ride inside and make it into a fully side ejection gun. The added material provided the necessary strength to fire smokeless powder shells, as well as 2 and ¾” shells.  Another improvement was the slide lock, which was absent on the Model 1893. The purpose of a slide lock is much as it sounds; a device to lock the slide in the forward and closed position. It would seem inherent that this was necessary, but it was absent until developed for the 1897. The slide lock was engaged when the slide or pump was pushed forward into battery and disengaged by a slight forward motion of the pump, something that came naturally during firing the gun, which would unlock the slide and allow the gun to be cycled. Essentially, the slide lock kept the shooter from bringing the slide back during the firing process. Without this lock, the action could be partially opened during the firing process by a shooter not applying forward pressure on the slide. As far as features go, the Model 1987 had two other distinguishing features that would carry through into the Model 1912. Initially, the 1893 and 97 were both made with barrels that were not removable- the idea of a ‘take down' version of the 97 was introduced a few years after its release and served to be quite useful for folks who wished to travel with a gun. The ability to break the gun down allowed it to be packed into manageable size luggage for train or bus transportation that was so common at the time. This concept is now so widespread that we as modern shooters take it for granted that all of our pump and semi-auto shotguns can easily be broken down, but at the turn of the century that was not the case. In particular many early pump guns had barrels that were fitted per each action - that means you couldn't swap out to different barrels. The second notable feature of this family of guns was the lack of trigger disconnector. In the simplest terms, this means that when the gun is cycled, if the trigger is held down, as soon as the slide is rammed forward bringing the gun back into battery, the shotgun will fire. The result is that each time one pumps the gun, it fires. Slam firing in combination with a magazine tube that held 6, 2 ¾” shells, made the 1897 and Model 12 popular military weapons and many were used as trench guns starting in WWI.  So where does that leave us then? Well, with the Winchester Model 1912 of course. The Model 12 was the first internal hammer, pump shotgun produced by the company. Designed by Thomas Crossley Johnson it followed in the success of the Model 1897 of which nearly 1million were produced. The Model 12 borrowed from John Browning's designs by pulling the aforementioned features from its predecessor and by exhibiting several new notable features. A photo of an 1897 with the pump in the ‘open position' shows the bolt out of the rear of the action(cocking back the hammer), and the lifter dropped below and outside the action to the bottom. The gun looks like quite the contraption in the number of moving parts that extend beyond the action. All of this changed with the Model 12, beginning with bringing the hammer inside the action.  Tucking the hammer inside the action, allowed the back of the receiver to be solid, improving both the looks and the overall strength of the gun. The 97s lifter mechanism, used for bringing shells from the magazine tube up into the action and locking the bolt, was foregone for a newer carrier style mechanism that remained inside the confines of the action during a normal cycle of the gun. Most will recognize this carrier as the hinged flap that covers the opening in the bottom of the action. Additionally, the bolt locks forward into the receiver itself when in battery, not requiring the lifter to do so. The Model 12 still requires a forward push of the hand to actuate the pump when the trigger is pulled, and there is also push-button located beside the back of the trigger guard to release the slide lock. The safety is located at the forward end of the trigger guard.  All of these improvements resulted in a wonderfully functional, sleek handling pump shotgun. The Model 12 was touted as the Perfect Repeater and gained a reputation for its smooth action. Most of this can be attributed to the fact that parts were primarily forged and then required significant machining and fitting to be assembled. Unfortunately, time is money, and the costs of making the model 12 would eventually catch up to production after WWII. The release of the 870 by Remington would take its own toll as the Remington gun was a fraction of the price to produce.    Though many stalwart Model 12 fans were loyal to the end, the gun would eventually end production in 1964. During production years, the Model 12 saw a variety of models and features. You can find Model 12s in gauges 12, 16, 20, and even 28, though very few 28s were actually made. There was never a .410 because rather than using the Model 12, Winchester opted to create the Model 42, which was a dedicated .410 sized gun. Winchester's standard shotgun grades Skeet, Trap, Tournament, and Pigeon found their way onto Model 12s, with a variety of upgrade options, namely wood, engraving, and rib styles. There was a 12ga version designed to shoot 3” shells labeled “Super Speed and Super X”. Some other interesting facts about the 12:  It was only available in 20ga in its first year of production, with 12 gauge and 16 coming out in 1913. Model 1897s and Model 12s were used as trench guns and riot guns for the military up through Korea and Vietnam. It is of note that the Germans issued a diplomatic protest to the use of these tranch guns in 1918, stating that they were a violation of the 1907 Hague, and that Americans caught with them would face punishment. America retaliated with its own threats to captured Germans soldiers, but the most interesting result of this contentious moment was that there are no photos of Trench guns in use because the US did not want word of their use getting out. For those folks who own, or wish to own a 12, keep in mind that they were chambered for 2 ⅝” shells up to 1927, after which they were chambered for 2 ¾” shells.  The 12 takedown guns have a pin at the end of the magazine tube. The threads on the magazine tube and barrel are what are called interrupted threads. Essentially the threads are only on half of the barrel and mag tube shank. If you divided the end into quarters, the threads are on opposing quarters. The receiving threads in the action are also interrupted the same way. This allows the barrel and mag tube to be turned a quarter turn to disengage the threads. On a model 12- there are two arrows that align on the magazine. To take the gun apart one moves the pin on the end of the mag tube and turns it a quarter turn. This disengages the mag tube which along with the slide can be slide forward and out of the action. Then, you can twist both the mag tube, slide, and barrel all at once, and they will rotate a quarter turn and can be removed from the action. The same steps in revers will put this takedown gun back together, and render it ready for shooting again.  And finally, Exhibition shooter Herb Parsons “The Showman Shooter” used a Model 12 in his shows, famously breaking 7 clays with the gun. Do yourself a favor and look that one up on youtube to see some great old exhibition shooting. I have to admit that the thing I like most about doing these reports is that it makes me pick up the guns in my collection and really check them out, through and through. My old 16ga model 12 has seen a ton of use. It was purchased at a gun show for a song. Its a field grade in the 800,000s with a plain Modified choke barrel chambered for 2 ¾” shells. Almost all of the blue is worn and the stock has its share of dings and scratches. It still operates super smooth and has taken some game for me over the years. I took it apart and wiped it down, cycled the action a few times remind this old gun what it's like to function. Like so many old guns, it has come to my rest farm for old, weathered, and tired guns where it will live out the remainder of my days, well-loved and looked at often, occasionally taken for walks in the woods during October. Todo mundo já deve ter recebido uma proposta do gerente do banco para contratar o Super X Cap, Pé Quente Bradesco, PIC Itaú, ou qualquer  outro título de capitalização. Mas será que esses títulos valem a pena? Como funciona? Quais os riscos? A Isabel, ouvinte da Rádio Inconfidência, nos contou, durante o programa, sobre os problemas que teve no banco ao contratar um título capitalização do programa Pé Quente, do Bradesco. Ela atrasou algumas parcelas e corre o risco de perder tudo! Infelizmente muitos outros brasileiros passam pela mesma situação. Ou porque deixaram-se levar pela conversa do gerente do banco ou por não se atentarem para a leitura do contrato. Eu e o Pedro Vieira aproveitamos da dúvida dela para esclarecer vários pontos sobre esses títulos. A análise vale não só para o Bradesco, mas também para o Super X Cap, da Caixa Econômica Federal, o PIC, do Itaú, o Ourocap do Banco do Brasil, entre outros. Você verá que as coisas não são bem do jeito que o gerente do banco te conta. O caso da Isabel Segundo a Isabel, todo ano ela depositava mensalmente R$100,00 no plano de capitalização Pé Quente Bradesco. Após 12 meses ela resgataria esse valor com a correção. No entanto, deixou de pagar por dois ou três meses. Quando foi cobrir essa dívida o gerente do banco disse que o plano estava cancelado e que ela só poderia resgatar após um ano. Ele sugeriu ainda que uma alternativa seria fazer outro plano de capitalização. Ela comentou que ficou muito chateada e se recusou a fazer um novo título de capitalização. Agora pensa em aplicar esses R$100,00 na poupança, que rende pouco mas é garantido. Ela pode perder tudo? Sim! Fiz uma pesquisa no regulamento do Pé Quente Bradesco e encontrei que há a possibilidade de cancelamento do título de capitalização. Isso acontece após o não pagamento de até 3 meses de atraso de qualquer parcela. Quando isso acontece você pode realmente perder o direito. Existe alternativa para ela? É comum os gerentes não explicarem o que estão vendendo. Muitos se utilizam de jargões inadequados. Afirmam, por exemplo, que o título de capitalização é igual à Caderneta de Poupança, que não é nem um pouco verdade. Um exemplo dessa postura antiética é a insensibilidade do gerente do banco da Isabel. Mesmo ciente da situação em que ela se encontrava ainda ofereceu um outro título de capitalização. Há casos de pessoas que, ao expor essa má conduta do gerente em sites de grande visibilidade, como o Reclame Aqui, conseguiram fazer com que o banco, em caráter excepcional, restituísse aquilo que foi pago. Mas a rigor ele não têm a obrigação de devolver nada, já que isso consta no contrato assinado. Como funcionam Super X Cap, Pé Quente Bradesco, PIC Itaú e outros? Funciona mais ou menos como uma Tele-Sena ou um Papa-Tudo. Por exemplo, se a Tele-Sena custa R$5,00, depois de um ano você recupera R$2,50 mais uma correção. Então é possível ir aos correios e trocar por outras Tele-Senas. Além de recuperar parte do valor da cartela é possível participar de sorteios e concorrer a prêmios. Então, voltando no caso da Isabel, dos R$100,00 por mês que ela paga ao banco, uma parte vira lucro direto do banco, via remuneração da Seguradora Bradesco, que é quem administra o título de capitalização Pé Quente, e uma outra quantia vai para custear os sorteios. Assim como no Super X Cap ou no Pic Itaú, quem participa desse programa de capitalização tem direito a sorteios mensais. Quem paga pelo sorteio não é o banco, são os próprios participantes. É como se fosse um grupo de consórcio e o que sobra constitui uma reserva de capitalização. Assim, cria-se uma reserva de valor atualizado monetariamente, com o que sobra após o lucro do Banco e a caixinha do sorteio. Este sim é o montante que será restituído ao final do vencimento do título de capitalização. O que acaba não sendo um bom negócio. Mas infelizmente todos os grandes bancos têm esses títulos e oferecem ativamente para os seus clientes. Especialmente a um público “menos avisado”. Então para que serve um título de capitalização? Como os títulos de capitalização não retornam um bom valor ao final, servem  para quem gosta de sorteio. Esses títulos (Pé Quente Bradesco, Super X Cap, PIC…) são voltados para quem gosta de sorteio e não consegue guardar dinheiro. Assim cria-se uma cota para incentivar a criação de reserva futuro para aquelas pessoas que não têm qualquer disciplina. O fato de poder participar de sorteios (que é uma coisa que o brasileiro gosta muito) ajuda comprometer parte da renda. Assim, ao final do prazo, o participante sai com alguma reserva. Já que se ele não tivesse feito essa capitalização, provavelmente teria gasto esse dinheiro superfluamente. Título de capitalização não é investimento! O título de capitalização gera obrigações e o não cumprimento delas leva a perdas. Investimento não é assim. Investimento é aquele que você faz quando você pode. Se em um mês o orçamento apertou, você pode simplesmente não fazer o a aplicação, ou melhor, resgatá-la pra complementar a renda. Os gerentes bancários costumam vender títulos como o Pé Quente Bradesco, o Super X Cap da Caixa Econômica Federal ou o PIC, do Itaú como se fosse um investimento. Mas ele se configura como uma obrigação. É quase como um carnê ou uma prestação de um programa de loja. Se você não cumpre com aquele pagamento mensal você começar a incorrer em perdas, como é o caso da Isabel. A importância de ler bem o contrato Como existe a possibilidade de perder tudo ao atrasar o pagamento das parcelas é extremamente necessário ler contrato com atenção. Provavelmente quando a Isabel assinou o contrato faltou ler o regulamento e ficar ciente de que existia uma sanção. Isso não é um problema só da Isabel, quase ninguém lê contratos antes de assinar! Mas é fundamental ler tudo com cuidado antes de contratar esses títulos, seja o Pé Quente, Super X Cap, PIC, ou qualquer outro. A fim de tomar consciência dos riscos que esses programas oferecem e se prevenir contra esse tipo de armadilha. Título de capitalização também não é poupança forçada! A ouvinte Silvana comentou: “acompanho o programa e sempre achei que título de capitalização fosse uma poupança forçada e que não rende nada. Não caio mais nessa. Tem outras maneiras de aplicar o seu dinheiro.” Muito obrigada pela participação Silvana! Faço apenas uma correção ao seu comentário, título de capitalização não é poupança forçada. Como a Isabel relatou, se houver algum um imprevisto ou algum aperto no orçamento, existe um ônus ao deixar de pagar as parcelas do título. Em uma poupança forçada você tem a liberdade de não fazer o aporte em algum mês, retirar o dinheiro na hora que quiser e até mesmo cancelar sem nenhum tipo de prejuízo. Como é o caso de planos de investimento com débito automático, por exemplo. Quais são as armadilhas dos Título de Capitalização? Os TCs buscam estimular a criação de uma reserva de médio e longo prazo. O brasileiro, porém, ainda não tem essa disciplina. Quando ele entra no negócio sem ler o contrato e sem nenhum tipo de alerta do gerente do banco, acaba achando que se parar de pagar não terá maiores problemas e que receberá o dinheiro de volta.  Por isto, não faz um planejamento maior, não pensa nas condições de pagamento caso fique desempregado, por exemplo. A pressão sobre os gerentes bancários Os bancos grandes de relacionamento, Bradesco, Itaú, Caixa Econômica Federal, Banco do Brasil, Santander, etc.,  empurram esses títulos para seus clientes. Ao chegar na agência para realizar uma abertura de conta ou qualquer tipo de movimentação, o gerente oferece o programa de capitalização. Essa oferta muitas vezes é feita de maneira ilegal, como uma venda casada. O gerente propõe que para fazer a operação que o cliente deseja, este precisa ajudá-lo a bater uma meta. Como? Comprando o Pé Quente Bradesco, o Super X Cap, o PIC, ou qualquer outro título de capitalização. E aí vem os argumentos falaciosos como “é muito bom, tem sorteio”, ou “é igual à Caderneta de Poupança”, o que já demonstramos não ser verdade. Muitas pessoas acabam sendo lesadas por essa oferta enganosa. Muitas vezes essa má fé do gerente vem da pressão de seus empregadores. Há uma necessidade constante de bater metas, a qualquer custo. Existem casos de gerentes com mais escrúpulos que acabam pedindo demissão por se sentirem mal, ludibriando as pessoas. No mínimo desconfiam, pelo perfil do cliente, que isso prejudicará suas finanças. A dificuldade de cancelamento do título de capitalização já indica que é um mau negócio! Segundo o regulamento do Pé Quente Bradesco, para cancelar o título é preciso ir até a agência procurar o gerente. Ali você terá que convencê-lo de que você realmente quer e precisa cancelar o título. Não existe uma maneira prática para efetuar o cancelamento. Um conselho que eu deixo para o leitor que quer saber se um negócio é bom ou ruim é: faça a seguinte pergunta - “qual é a facilidade para cancelar?”. Se você consegue cancelar remotamente, pela internet, com 3 ou 4 cliques, é um indicativo de que o negócio vale a pena. Agora, se você tem que passar por uma central de atendimento, três tipos de atendente te oferecendo vários outros produtos, mandar uma carta escrita de próprio punho e outras inúmeras burocracias, provavelmente o negócio não vale tanto a pena. Outro ponto que deve ser analisados são  os custos que esse cancelamento envolve. No caso dos títulos de capitalização por exemplo, só é possível resgatar 100% das parcelas pagas ao final do prazo. Então se você comprou um título de 60 meses, somente no sexagésimo mês o resgate não envolverá nenhum tipo de prejuízo. Por outro lado, se você quiser resgatar o título depois de seis meses de pagamento (o que não é incomum, pois nesse tempo a vida muda muito) você tem direito a aproximadamente 50% do valor que você pagou. Poupança rende mais que Super X Cap, Pé Quente Bradesco, PIC Itaú e Ourocap O brasileiro via de regra é mais conservador. Não gosta de arriscar e a Poupança, como a Isabel sugeriu, seria um investimento bem melhor do que este título de capitalização. Isso porque o dinheiro vai render mais. Além disso, não serão cobradas taxas de administração, carregamento e a caixinha do sorteio, embutidas no custo do programa de capitalização. Assim, a reserva de capitalização, que é o que sobra e rende, chega a ser 60% do valor da parcela. Outra vantagem é que se o orçamento apertar em algum mês você pode simplesmente não colocar o dinheiro. Isso sem incorrer em peradas. É possível até mesmo retirar uma parte do montante para ajustar nas finanças. Nos títulos Pé Quente Bradesco, Super X Cap, Ourocap e PIC, por exemplo, não existe essa possibilidade. Vale lembra que existem outros investimentos tão seguros quanto a Poupança e que rendem mais, como os títulos do Tesouro Direto, por exemplo. Além desses, investimentos como LCI, LCA e CDBs são cobertos pelo Fundo Garantidor de Crédito, são aplicações tão garantidas quanto a Caderneta. Então: o X Cap é Super mesmo ou não? Para quem gosta de sorteio, não tem disciplina e está disposto a correr os riscos, os títulos de capitalização como o Super X Cap, Pé Quente Bradesco, PIC Itaú entre outros,  podem não ser uma má ideia. Mas tenha em mente que ao contratar esse programa você terá uma obrigação de pagar as parcelas por vários anos. Caso queira sair, estará sujeito a uma perda financeira grande. Então, antes de contratar um título de capitalização se atente aos seguintes pontos: Não se deixe levar pela conversa com o gerente! Leia o contrato com atenção! avalie a facilidade ou a dificuldade de cancelamento, para saber se é realmente um bom negócio; lembre-se que esses títulos não podem ser considerados uma “poupança forçada” e muito menos, “investimento” analise outras maneiras que podem fazer com que seu dinheiro renda mais. A Caderneta de Poupança é uma opção. Mas títulos do Tesouro Direto podem ter retornos maiores e oferecem a mesma segurança. Sara Price started racing on the dirt and went on to join Kawasaki as the first factory-supported female racer. She began racing dirtbikes at the age of eight and collected 19 amateur titles and medaled in Women’s Super X at the 2010 X Games. However post her two wheel career Sarah now races UTVs and Trophy Trucks. In 2017 she won the Hoonigan Wanted Driver Search which led her to the San Pedro Martir Hill Climb. When she isn’t racing, Price works as a stunt professional, performing on motorcycles, and on four wheels and as a precision driver for television and film.All the while at her side is noted off-road navigator (rally, trophy trucks and UTVs) and full time microbiology student Erica Sacks.
