Australian officials are closely monitoring a Chinese vessel that's passing through its waters, after completing a joint mission with Kiwi scientists off the coast of Fiordland. The high-tech Chinese research ship is carrying a deep-sea submersible that's capable of exploring extreme depths. It's following the route of Australia's deep-sea submarine cable, off the southern coast, weeks after Chinese warships carried out live drills in the Tasman Sea. Australian Correspondent Donna Demaio told Andrew Dickens that when asked, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says there's not much Australian can do about it. Albanese says they'd prefer it wasn't there, but it's able to pass through, just like Australia is able to have vessels in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait. Mark Jones is a well-known adventurer in the NZ expedition community. In this episode Mark shares about his most recent journey - sea kayaking the Fiordland coast. Due to the weather, they had to switch to Plan B, and started in Doubtful Sound, finishing in Jackson Bay. The duo were self-sufficient with their protein, fishing and hunting off the land. Mark shares about where they stayed along the way - at questionable campsites and historic huts. There were some incredibly challenging surf landings that damaged both kayaks, calling for DIY repairs to complete the journey. As an Outdoor Education lecturer at AUT, Mark is passionate about inspiring adventure and the connection between mental wellbeing and the outdoors. David shares the story of his latest love affair, after falling for Seabreeze III, a 48-year-old classic 105-foot motoryacht, that he is acquiring for the rapidly growing, Ocean Sailing Expeditions fleet. After stumbling across Seabreeze III, 2-months ago and reading all about the painstaking restoration undertaken from 2019-2021 at a cost of more than $3.3m, by the current "motivated vendors", it was just too hard to go past. David openly shares the story of the roller coaster ride with Ocean Sailing Expeditions over the past 5 years and why this addition to the business makes total sense, even though its powered by motor and not sail. David dives into the business history, challenges, set backs and growth story. If you own a boat or a business, you'll relate to many of these challenges. This episode includes an exclusive new, one-time Membership and Shareholder offer, to help fund the acquisition of the vessel. You can benefit significantly by accessing sailing adventures at 30-100% discount in return for a one-off investment. Seabreeze III will operate around New Zealand, offering cruises and expeditions to the Bay of Islands, Hauraki Gulf, Marlborough Sounds, Nelson/Tasman Region, Fiordland and Stewart Island, in the warmer months of the year and head to Fiji for 4 months each winter. With 4 different deck levels, Seabreeze III is the perfect on the water, viewing platform for special events such as Sail GP, the Americas Cup and Round-the-World race leg starts and finishes in Auckland. Seabreeze III will join the Ocean Sailing Expedition's, events calendar from late November 2024 and also offer private charter booking opportunities. What possibly could Captain Cook‘s exploration of the Fiordland of New Zealand's South Island and world class wine have in common? Greg Hay, Wet Jacket Wine's own Captain, leads the team toward a vision of precision, exploration and legacy. Hay founded several of Central Otago's renowned wineries (Chard Farm and Peregrine). With Wet Jacket, he set out to do something more visionary to fulfill a spirituality in his quest to link land and sea.Wet Jacket's lineup breaks the stigma of New Zealand = Sauvignon Blanc. For those who have the opportunity to explore, seeing the breadth of gorgeous whites and legendary Pinot Noir in the Central Otago area brings a completely different perspective. Pinot Gris from the Wet Jacket and Puntangi labels delivers depth and complexity with floral and crisp fruits. Way beyond a porch pounding PG, these wines deserve contemplation to unravel their layers. Our exploration of Wet Jacket's wines extends across a wide array of aromatic whites, legendary varietals such as Chardonnay and Syrah. We delve into the Central Otago expression of Pinot Noir, but not without multiple layers of Captain Hay's magician-like touch. There is a personal feel to what the wines deliver. The legacy, and the vision of what has transpired since Wet Jacket's inception less than a decade ago is nothing less than well rooted in something ethereal, from the cosmos. It's almost like the wines become part of you in telling their story. For more of the story, visit: Spirituality in a Quest for Wine » WINE WIZE (wine-wize.com)Cheers! Kia ora e te whānau. Some of running's biggest truisms are also the most tried and tested clichēs. And if you think about it, they are cliche for a reason. Because they are true. What's your why? Have you thought about it? Like, really thought about why you run? Carly Webber and her husband Lee spent three years travelling in a camper-van with their three children before settling in Te Anau 18 months ago. Carly started running six years ago to have control over her life and to spend time investing in herself and her relationships. Keen to share a story and very keen on capturing people's portraits, Carly started Runners NZ in the vein of Humans of New York. People captured in their running gear, and their why. Carly is 150ft tall and this conversation covers multiple topics from Carly's history with running, mental health, to living in Te Anau and being on the Kepler Committee. What is most obvious, apart from the fact that old mate has legendary chat, is Carly's deep love of connection to the trails and the people who run them. Kirsty Pickett is in Fiordland, where feasibility testing is underway on the Milford Opportunities Project's masterplan, which could radically change the way tourists interact with the national park. The proposal includes a permit system for international visitors, removing fixed-wing aircraft and some cruise liners, and also banning foreign motorists. And in Tuatapere, the completion of the multi-million dollar upgrade on the country's next Great Walk has been delayed another year. The Hump Ridge Trace was meant to reopen in late 2022 but the date has been pushed back due to supply chain delays and bad weather.

Tourism operators in Milford Sound face radical changes to the way they operate under a new proposal. Government-funded initiative The Milford Opportunities Project, which is overseen by the Ministers of Conservation, Tourism and Transport alongside Ngai Tahu, are pushing for a ban on all overseas drivers within the area. They're also looking to ban fixed-wing aircraft in the area, going as far as removing the airstrip, and also banning cruise ships from the inner sound. Milford Opportunities Project chair Bill Day says the current model is not working. 870,000 visitors go to Fiordland each year, often causing congestion on the single road in and out of Milford Sound. Kathryn speaks with Bill Day, and Glenorchy Air co-owner James Stokes, whose company operates flights to Milford, and who fears it will turn visitors away from the area altogether.
