My guest today is Yasemin Saltuk Lamy, Head of Investment Strategy at Legal & General (L&G), a London-based multinational financial services and asset management company. And believe it or not, her investment journey started when she was only 18.Back then, she had been dreaming of studying in Senegal to experience a French-speaking African economy. But then, the University of Pennsylvania's study abroad office made her an offer she couldn't ignore: a $12,000 scholarship to study in Scotland. For most students, that would have been a no-brainer – they would have spent it on books, rent, or maybe a bit of travel… But Yasemin saw it as an investment opportunity. She did the math, figured she could live on $6,000, and put the rest into high-growth equities. It was 1998, the height of the dot-com boom. Her investment skyrocketed – until the bubble burst. Long story short, it took nearly a decade just to break even.It was a tough experience at such a young age, but a powerful one. Watching markets rise and fall, she realized she wanted to understand the bigger picture – how economies impact people's lives. And she had a strong background for that. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Yasemin grew up between two worlds. After a military coup d'état, her parents moved the family to the U.S., settling in Rhode Island.Every summer, she returned to Turkey, experiencing firsthand the stark economic contrasts between her two homes. In the U.S., she valued independence and opportunity. In Turkey, she saw the power of family networks and community-driven economies. But it wasn't until she moved back to Turkey as an adult that she truly felt the financial instability of inflation. She then abandoned her plan to pursue a Ph.D. in pure mathematics and instead studied financial mathematics at King's College London. After starting out as a high school math teacher, Yasemin moved into finance, bringing with her a strong focus on leadership and impact. At J.P. Morgan, she helped launch the Social Finance Team, and later at British International Investment, she led the Catalyst Portfolio – using catalytic capital to de-risk investments and crowd in private capital for emerging markets and climate projects. Now at Legal & General, she's focused on bridging institutional capital with sustainable investments. She's using her experience with catalytic capital to make high-impact projects – especially in climate resilience and infrastructure – less risky and more attractive to traditional investors like pension funds and insurers. In this interview, Yasemin breaks down how catalytic capital is transforming impact investing and why pension funds have a duty to invest in the right things to protect long-term asset value. The future of finance isn't just about returns – it's about reshaping the system to work for people and the planet. Tune in to hear how Yasemin is making it happen.—About the SRI 360° Podcast: The SRI 360° Podcast is focused exclusively on sustainable & responsible investing. Happy New Year, Short Wavers! What better time to contemplate the conundrum that is zero than this, the reset of the year? Zero is a fairly new concept in human history and even more recent as a number. It wasn't until around the 7th century that zero was being used as a number. That's when it showed up in the records of Indian mathematicians. Since then, zero has, at times, been met with some fear — at one point, the city of Florence, Italy banned the number.Today, scientists seek to understand how much humans truly comprehend zero — and why it seems to be different from other numbers. That's how we ended up talking to science writer Yasemin Saplakoglu about the neuroscience of this number that means nothing.Read more of Yasemin's reporting on zero for Quanta Magazine. As we approach the end of our season, we are airing a fave from earlier in the year. In this episode, we shine a light on Whitney Geller and Yasemin Emory, co-founders of Jems, a non-toxic condom company with gender-inclusive packaging and language.Yasemin and Whitney, who had already been operating their own design agency, noticed a gap in the market while searching for contraception options between their pregnancies. The condom aisle lacked appeal due to its outdated packaging and language – the category was targeting straight men only, with products that hadn't been updated in decades, and left women and gay folks out of the conversation altogether. As a result, they embarked on a mission to revolutionize the industry. Jems isn't just about condoms; it's a platform for expansive education, sparking conversations on everything from sexual health to love, power, and beyond. With a commitment to simplicity and transparency, Jems is normalizing safer sex with condoms that are healthier and cater to everyone's needs. This season of our podcast is brought to you by TD Canada Women in Enterprise. In Deutschland herrscht oft Skepsis gegenüber KI. Lately, much attention has been given to political attacks on prestigious writers. The attempted murder of Salman Rushdie and the deplatforming of Adania Shibli at the Frankfurt Book Fair sparked international outrage and raised awareness of ongoing threats to individual writers today.Far less attention is given to the fact that across the world, writers are prosecuted and jailed for their supposed dissidence to autocratic regimes. Turkey is among the world leaders in its number of jailed authors, a trend that increases wherever war and conflict can form a forgiving political climate. What is the effect of political persecution on individual writers? And how does such a climate affect the writers who remain “free”?For decades, Yasemin Çongar has been one of Turkey's most renowned journalists and oppositional voices to the Turkish regime. Since 2016, she has herself been on trial for her journalism, and is still fighting a lengthy prison sentence. In 2018, Çongar also founded the Kıraathane literature house in Istanbul, where she worked as director until March 2023. At Kıraathane, as well as through her work as a translator and writer, Çongar has helped raise awareness of the challenges faced by writers today. Now, Çongar visits the House of Literature for a philosophical and personal lecture on freedom, creativity, and the transcendent power of literature. She is also Co-founder of Jems, a female-founded, body-safe condom and lube product line. Whitney has worked at the forefront of strategic design with global clients such as MTV, Coca-Cola, Oprah Winfrey, and the Mayo Clinic while at Bruce Mau Design. Yasemin Emory is Co-founder and Partner of Whitman Emorson. It is a team of designers, strategists, writers, editors, and creative thinkers bound by the desire to produce thoughtful and responsive work. She is also Co-founder of Jems, built on the desire to naturalize sex and condom use and disrupt a toxic industry. Previously, Yasemin served as the Senior Director of CO-OP and Associate Art Director at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. In this episode… Have you ever wondered how groundbreaking companies are born? Can an idea that challenges the status quo transform not only an industry, but perceptions as well? Whitney Geller and Yasemin Emory unpack this notion by sharing their story of transitioning from leading the successful design agency Whitman Emorson to challenging stereotypes in the safer sex industry with their brand, Jems Condoms. The duo addresses the lack of representation and dated messaging in the existing market, combining their design prowess with a mission to make condom buying and use more approachable and stigma-free. By cultivating a collaborative studio culture and ambitious leadership at Whitman Emorson, they granted themselves the freedom to venture into the product space, driven by values and a desire to make an impact. In this episode of Inspired Insider Podcast, Dr. Jeremy Weisz interviews Whitney Geller and Yasemin Emory, Co-founders of Whitman Emorson, about their entrepreneurial journey from running a creative agency to launching a safer sex brand. They share how they navigated the complexities of creating a start-up without compromising the integrity and success of their original agency, setting a culture that embraces a life-work balance, and tackling regulatory challenges in advertising condoms.
