"They came to believe Slenderman was sending his army after them"Kathleen Hale, originally from Wisconsin, writes about crime and social media. Her fourth book, SLENDERMAN, was nominated for an Edgar Prize and won the 2023 Midland Writers Award for Non Fiction. It tells the story behind the Slenderman stabbings in Wisconsin, USA, which shocked the local community and the world. The violence of Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weiser, the two twelve-year-old girls who attempted to stab their classmate to death, was extreme, but what seemed even more frightening was that they had done so under the influence of an internet meme, the so-called 'Slenderman'.Warning: This episode contains strong language and descriptions of violence, which may not be suitable for all listeners, especially younger weirdos. In 2014, 12-year-old Payton "Bella" Leutner was stabbed 19 times by two other tween girls. The crime was well publicized as the Slenderman stabbings because the two girls who committed the stabbing said a fictional character named Slenderman told them to do it. The girls were tried as adults for attempted murder (Payton lived) and went to jail.  In her book Slenderman: Online Obsession, Mental Illness, and the Violent Crime of Two Midwestern Girls, journalist Kathleen Hale looks at this true crime story through a new lens: that the girls who stabbed Payton were dealing with severe mental illness that the justice system in Wisconsin ignored.  Nora and Kathleen discuss the legal realities of this case, how the media portrayed the story and how we can all think about true crime consumption differently. — Wanna read the book? On May 31st, 2014, Morgan Geyser stabbed her onetime best friend Bella Leutner nineteen times, while her new best friend, Anissa Weier, looked on. All three girls were twelve years old.  Geyser was living with schizophrenia, and Weier had introduced her to the crowd-sourced internet phantasm known as Slenderman, who first appeared on Something Awful, the message board at the root of chan culture. Together, Geyser and Weier came to believe that Slenderman was demanding a sacrifice in exchange for his protection. Their crime,  at once naïve and brutal,  sparked a moral panic. Author Kathleen Hale joins Matthew to discuss her reporting on this story in her riveting and compassionate new book, Slenderman: Online Obsession, Mental Illness, and the Violent Crime of Two Midwestern Girls.Slenderman is brimming with tenderness for these girls, who are all creative, confused, scared, and ultimately bound to each other through social contagion and mental illness. Hale's writing is accessible but elliptical as it uncovers jagged details, but never easy answers, about a world that predicts our own.  On this podcast we spend a lot of time on the virtual demons that animate conspirituality and QAnon, driving some devotees to violence. Hale's work is good medicine for those who know that internet chaos and mental precarity will remain locked in feedback loops for the foreseeable future. Her meticulous investigation—enriched by hours spent interviewing Morgan Geyser—shows that the road to understanding is always paved with empathy.  Slenderman — Kathleen Hale 'Am I being catfished?' The idea of voting is simple, but the administration of elections in ways that ensure access and integrity is complex. In How We Vote: Innovation in American Elections (Georgetown University Press, 2020), Kathleen Hale and Mitchell Brown explore how election officials work, how ballots are cast and counted, and how jurisdictions try to innovate while also protecting the security of the voting process. Using original data gathered from state and local election officials and policymakers across the United States, Hale and Brown analyze innovations in voter registration, voting options, voter convenience, support for voting in languages other than English, the integrity of the voting process, and voting system technology. The result is a fascinating picture of how we vote now and will vote in the future. Join us to hear them talk about the book and its implications for the 2020 election. Stephen Pimpare is Senior Lecturer in the Politics & Society Program and Faculty Fellow at the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire. He is the author of The New Victorians (New Press, 2004), A People’s History of Poverty in America (New Press, 2008), winner of the Michael Harrington Award, and Ghettos, Tramps and Welfare Queens: Down and Out on the Silver Screen (Oxford, 2017). This week, we take stock of three bizarre and unsettling publishing stories: the apparent missteps in the reporting and fact-checking in Jill Abramson’s new book, the author Sherrilyn Kenyon filing a lawsuit over having been poisoned, and to top it all off, Kathleen Hale getting another book deal that strangely seems to celebrate the fact that she tracked down a Goodreads reviewer to her home. It’s a mix of the weird, and we try to draw some larger lessons for publishing out of the mess. Join us!

Different thoughts are discussed but everyone takes a bold stance against stalking and that perhaps authors should try to stay out of the discussions of readers. In this episode of Bibliophiles Anonymous, Denise and Jess discuss what has become a very heated topic in the book blogging community lately - the article posted by The Guardian by Kathleen Hale, detailing her attempts to respond and track down a reviewer who posted a horrible review and then mobilized others to do the same. Since many things (blog posts, tweets, etc.) have been deleted, it is hard to say for sure exactly what happened, since we only have Kathleen Hale's version of the story and there hasn't been a response (that we know of) from Blythe Harris (the reviewer in question), we will just say that it looks like both parties were behaving badly and made some not-so-good choices. As always, we will let you the listener weigh in with your opinions. Is this the story of a cyberbully who has used a fake, stolen identity to try and get attention? Is this the story of an author who overstepped her bounds and stalked a reviewer, both online and in person? Is it both? Bottom line: no one in this situation behaved well. Behave yourselves out there, people! Here are a LOT of links: The original Guardian article The GoodReads page for Kathleen Hale's book, No One Else Can Have You A link to Blythe Harris's review of the book in question (language warning) A link to another blog post that has several screenshots and links regarding this situation (note that the opinions of this blogger are not necessarily the opinions of us here at Bib Anon - I'm just including it because of the screen grabs, many of which no longer exist. - D) Chuck Wendig's helpful guide to how to respond to a reviewer (just because it's funny and Chuck is awesome) We will be at YALLFest next week! Desert Island Discs: Archive 1991-1996

The castaway this week in Desert Island Discs is the writer and illustrator Kathleen Hale. Mainly renowned for that hero of children's literature - Orlando, the Marmalade Cat - and now 96 years old, she'll be talking to Sue Lawley about the excitement and glamour of her bohemian girlhood after the First World War. As secretary to the painter Augustus John, she lived a turbulent but fascinating life at the heart of artistic London. Marriage and motherhood introduced stability into her life, but boredom with the children's books then on offer led her to create Orlando - the cat who went on to star in 18 beautifully-illustrated and charmingly-written books - considered by many to be the epitome of good children's literature. [Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: La Sardana De Les Monges by La Principal De Perelada Book: A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu by Marcel Proust Luxury: A gilabra (cloak of gold)
