The Thing with Feathers: birds and hope with Courtney Ellis

One of our greatest tools in understanding ourselves and the world is the concept of both/and. When we can hold two ideas or feelings in tension, we discover whole worlds of understanding and goodness.Author, speaker, and Episcopal-priest-in-training Cara Meredith has been fascinated with this concept for years. After dabbling in some essays about it, she landed on a both/and topic that really spoke to her soul: church camp.Today we celebrate her new book, Church Camp: Bad Skits, Cry Night, and How White Evangelicalism Betrayed a Generation, hot off the presses from Broadleaf. We talk about the good, the bad, the ugly, and how we might all be a little bit more faithful to the both/and in our lives.Plus: a little detour about penguins. Peter Harris co-founded A Rocha, a Christian nonprofit dedicated to conservation back in 1983. It continues to bring together those interested in conservation with people of faith, offering practical ways people can work to steward the good gift of creation God has given.Friends, I could have spoken with Peter for days upon days. First, his perspective that good, healthy change begins with “cultivating the love of what God has made.” With so much hopeless and despair around everything from the loss of biodiversity to climate change, it can be easy to descend into despair. But he reminded me that all good work begins and ends and has its roots in love.Secondly, I've always wondered what it would be like to discover a new species. In our text today, we are delivered to the scene in the life of King David during a time when he had much to look down about. David learns for the first time of the passing of his child. He must have felt down, mortified, and broken. There's no doubt he was suffering under immense pain, but we get a glimpse at what he does to rebound when he must have been feeling down. He has a family to provide for, he has a nation to protect and lead, and he has enemies to fight and defeat. And in the midst of it all, he models for us how to handle grief and loss, not if it happens, but when. Grief and loss are universal and inevitable. So how does David make it? How does David keep looking up when he's been feeling down? That's what we're going to dive into in this message.

For the last 20+ years I've had a flourishing business career which has taken me around the world. Unfortunately, tragedy struck, and everything changed. I lost my husband, Ross, in 2014 and just three years later I lost my son, Cole, at age 26 - both to suicide. After these devastating losses I was faced with a choice. I had to find purpose through despair, or I had to throw in the towel.I chose purpose. While I enjoyed my business prior to losing Ross and Cole, I knew that this next chapter was calling me to rise to a new level that would make an impact on more people, on a larger scale. I want to help those who feel lost in this world without a purpose, and those who have lost someone tragically or unexpectedly and are now faced with the same decision I faced in 2017.Alongside my daughter, Laurel, I poured every ounce of love and hope I had into our book, Keep Looking Up. The book serves as a way to share our personal stories of coping with the loss of Ross and Cole, and as a way to find a new life purpose on the other side of grief.I've dedicated myself in this new chapter to helping others define their life vision. The work I was doing allowed me to teach business owners how to have a clearer vision and direction in their careers. Although I still do private coaching, my main work has now become a mission for mental health.I help people create a crystal clear written vision for every area of their life, so they take action every day toward living out their purpose. Purpose is what gives people hope. Why vision? Because it has become clear to me that our youth and young adults are lost, and they need to find purpose. We can't ignore suicide; however, we can work together to reduce the numbers. We do this through vision work. This is my mission.I hope you'll join me in this movement by sharing my podcast, gifting Keep Looking Up to someone you're concerned about, attend a workshop, or simply connect with me via email or social media.Contact Carey Conleyhttps://www.careyconley.com/Carey@CareyConley.comJoin the Confidence and Clarity Membership!  https://carrievee.com/confidence-clarity-1Maxwell Method of Speaking Speakers club https://carrievee.com/maxwell-speakers-clubSchedule your Discovery Call with CarrieVee!https://schedulewithcarrievee.as.me/?appointmentType=12343596Book CarrieVee for a Speaking Engagement:  https://www.coachcarriev.com/contact-meStep Into Your Big Life Freebie: https://www.coachcarriev.com/stepintoyourbiglifefreebieThe Radical Empowerment Method 2.0 Online Course https://www.coachcarriev.com/radicalempowermentmethod2Radical Empowerment Method Book on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3Bdp2BCGet to an EVENT!  www.carrievee.com/eventsContact CarrieVee!IG: @iamcarrieveeLI and FB: Carrie Verrocchioemail: carriev@coachcarriev.com

Julie Zickefoose is one of those birding writers I've admired from afar for a long time.

Keep Looking Up with Caroline Kraddick

It's a new month which means it's a new book for KLU Book Club! The Four Agreements is basically required reading in my family, it was my dad's all time favorite book that he would quote constantly and really implemented the teachings into his every day life. If you didn't read the book, don't worry because I recap the Four Agreements and discuss the biggest takeaways from it so there is still an opportunity to learn! Since I talk a lot about self help and growth on the podcast, I've been drawn to my spiritual favorites but sometimes they can feel woo woo and overwhelming if you're just beginning your growth journey. So for next month's book, we will be doing “Hello, Molly!” by Molly Shannon which is a memoir but feels like a self help book because Molly is leading by example and teaching you things inadvertently by sharing her life experience in a light, refreshing but poignant way. I highly highly recommend listening to Molly read the book instead of reading it, if you can, because hearing her inflection and timing truly makes the whole experience so much better. If you have any books you'd like to be included in Book Club, please let me know!! Keep Looking Up!A Ten90 Media Production. Copyright © 2023 Ten90 Media. All rights reserved.

We are back with another episode of the Keep Looking Up podcast for Kidd Kraddick Legacy Month, this time with the men of the show J-Si Chavez and Big Al Mack. I find the older I get, especially with my career ventures and passions being so similar to my dad's, I find myself craving his advice, direction and validation. The beautiful thing about this series and with having the radio family my dad left behind so accessible to me is that the advice, direction and validation can come through them now. J-Si and Al gave me some incredible insight, as they spent years observing and learning from him. The most interesting part of this podcast was their answer when I asked what the trajectory of the show and everyone's career would have been if dad hadn't passed. As we discussed last week, the fact that the show is still going is a testament to the loyalty and connectedness of the cast. As a daughter, it makes me incredibly proud to see them carrying the show on and continuing to influence people in positives ways every single day. We cried but we laughed a lot too. I hope you all love it.  A Ten90 Media Production. Copyright © 2023 Ten90 Media. All rights reserved.

Keep Looking Up with Caroline Kraddick

I have been working over the last few months on a very special project to commemorate and celebrate the beautiful legacy of my dad, in honor of the 10 year anniversary of his passing on July 27th. For the whole month, the Keep Looking Up podcast is dedicated to interviewing people who knew him intimately and were inspired by him. I've had many full circle moments while doing this podcast but this interview with Kellie Rasberry takes the cake. The way I see it, without Kellie there would be no Kidd. That famous Kraddick Rasberry chemistry was tangible to everyone who listened. It was usually a rollercoaster of roasting, pushing each other's buttons in a way only they knew how and some tender moments. Like when Kellie told my dad that he was so hard to shop for that she was going to bring back his mother from the dead for Christmas

Keep Looking Up with Caroline Kraddick

It's the first book club episode of the Keep Looking Up podcast! In case you missed it, we are doing a community book club and the first book was “Ask and it is Given” by Ester and Jerry Hicks. As I was recording this episode, I realized I picked quite a heady book that may seem mystical and woo woo but I explained the science behind it and the impact this book has had on me. Here are some of the biggest takeaways from it!     ◦    You are co-creating with God/The Universe to make your perfect life. Any desire that is on your heart was out there a purpose and all you have to do is program your mindset to believe that you are worthy and able to receive those desires.      ◦    There is a three step process to manifesting and the second step is where people usually get stuck and don't see their desires come to fruition. The first step is to simply state the desire. The second step is to keep up the thoughts matching it. This means believing that it is already yours but more importantly, that you are worthy of receiving these blessings. If you don't believe that you're deserving of these manifestations, your brain will always find a way to prohibit you from accomplishing them. The last step is to let go, not fixate on it (because your focus will be on the lack of whatever it is you're trying to manifest) and let the universe/God set everything else up for you, including the timing and people involved.      ◦    Road trip analogy - if you know you're on the way during a 14 hour road trip, you can choose to say “Are we there yet?” and fixate on how uncomfortable you are or how your friends are going to arrive at the destination before you. Or you could…enjoy the ride. You know you're going to end up at your destination at the time you're going to be there, no use in stressing about the process. The ten year anniversary of my dad's passing is next month so to honor him, I am interviewing influential people in his life for every episode in the month of July. Along with that, the book club next month is my dad's absolute favorite book that he read every year, “The Four Agreements.” So I hope you'll join me for next month's book club!__________A Ten90 Media Production.
