She explains her recent work on "surveillance" in the works of Poe, Harriet Jacobs, and Charles Ball who are rarely studied together, and how they invert power dynamics.Kelly talks about how important it is to move beyond venerating traditional canonical (mostly white and male) authors and the importance of including more diverse voices and perspectives. Then, we talk about why current popular culture is interested in themes of "racial surveillance and anxiety," think Hulu's The Other Black Girl or HBO's The Gilded Age!Of particular interest to Kelly's studies is how The Other Black Girl critiques how publishing prioritizes profits over diversity and sensitivity. Kelly explains that the issues in the publishing industry that the TV show explores, is really similar to academia. You can find out more about Kelly's research and writing, including her book Slavery, Surveillance and Genre in Antebellum United States Literature. https://www.rider.edu/about/faculty-staff-directory/kelly-rossFollow ITBR on IG,@ivorytowerboilerroom and TikTok,@ivorytowerboilerroomOur Sponsors:To subscribe to The Gay and Lesbian Review visit glreview.org. Slavery, Surveillance and Genre in Antebellum United States Literature (Oxford UP, 2022) argues for the existence of deep, often unexamined, interconnections between genre and race by tracing how surveillance migrates from the literature of slavery to crime, gothic, and detective fiction. Attending to the long history of surveillance and policing of African Americans, the book challenges the traditional conception of surveillance as a top-down enterprise, equally addressing the tactics of sousveillance (watching from below) that enslaved people and their allies used to resist, escape, or merely survive racial subjugation. Examining the dialectic of racialized surveillance and sousveillance from fugitive slave narratives to fictional genres focused on crime and detection, the book shows how these genres share a thematic concern with the surveillance of racialized bodies and formal experimentation with ways of telling a story in which certain information is either rendered visible or kept hidden. Through close readings of understudied fugitive slave narratives published in the 1820s and 1830s, as well as texts by Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Frederick Douglass, Hannah Crafts, and Harriet Jacobs, Ross analyzes the different ways white and black authors take up these issues in their writing--from calming white fears of enslaved rebellion to abolishing slavery--and demonstrates how literary representations ultimately destabilize any clear-cut opposition between watching from above and below. In so doing, the book demonstrates the importance of race to surveillance studies and claims a greater role for the impact of surveillance on literary expression in the US during the era of slavery. Kendall Dinniene is a PhD candidate in English at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Their research examines how contemporary American authors respond to anti-fatness in their work, revealing the contours of citizenship and paths toward liberation. Learn more about your ad choices. Ryan Oftebro and I recorded this episode a little over a month ago - I'd wanted to interview Ryan over a year ago about this topic because Ryan is Principal and CEO of Kelly-Ross Pharmacy group here in Seattle.  Kelly-Ross remains one of the few independently owned pharmacies in our area and Ryan, as the incoming president of the WA State Pharmacy association, has some unique visibility into the number of opioid prescription and overdose in our state.  I knew generally that Ryan had lobbied in Olympia to fight Opioid addiction, and that he was somewhat of an expert, so he became my guru in my quest for education.   As Covid slowly took over, he and I talked at length about the effects of having people in isolation, unable to use their regular drug dealers, how this would impact addiction and overdose.  A year ago he told me that it would be catastrophic and as it turns out, he was right.

The following are things we talked about: 1) Stay committed, work hard, and reap the rewards 2) Listening to yourself and focusing inward 3) Sacrifice for what you love; delay gratification in the short-term 4) Always have a teacher, coach, or mentor 5) Use more long-term thinking 6) Consistency is key - and Kelly is a byproduct and testimonial of true consistency 7) Be present in the now but plan and prepare for the future 8) Take time for yourself 9) Use intention to bring value to your end consumer 10) Find you niche and run with it 11) Enjoy EVERY PART of your process The Full Video of This Episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grsJblQrKa8 Kelly's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kellynicolefit/ Kelly's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLYVmfa7OFK87e9ytDcreyA Kelly's Website: https://kellynicolefit.com/ Episode #18 with Kelly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grsJblQrKa8 To see what we are up to and what is going on around the Dream BIG & Co community you can visit us on the following platforms: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dreambigandco/ Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/dreambigandco/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dreambigandco/ Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/dreambigandco Snapchat: https://www.snapchat.com/add/dreambigandco Tik Tok: http://vm.tiktok.com/fwRdNG/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/dreambigandco/ Medium: https://medium.com/@dreambigandco Our Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/user/ajd372/playlist/1eWjtPUmEcOwWNLHnXPbom?si=w6RxhK9oSOSTsXnrO0R2iA Our Amazon Alexa Skill - Dream BIG Daily: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YPF7T32/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=dream+big+daily&qid=1570174516&s=digital-skills&sr=1-1 Website: http://www.dreambigandco.com

Welcome to the Pharmacy Podcast Network, I'm your cohost Tony Guerra for the #PharmacyFutureLeaders podcast broadcasting from Ankeny, Iowa. We're going to talk with innovative new pharmacy practitioners and soon to be pharmacy graduates. I've gotten a lot of emails from prepharmacy and new graduate students about decisions they are making right now, feel free to connect with me on Twitter at Tony underscore Pharm D or subscribe to my YouTube channel at TonyPharmD where you can find over 700 videos on drug pronunciation, memorization, and the Top 200 that support my audiobook Memorizing Pharmacology. If you're a P-3 going to ASHP Midyear 2016, make sure to link your leadership accomplishments on Twitter to hashtag Pharmacy Future Leaders we'll be providing a stipend for one student registration. We'll announce that person on October 28th, 2016 Anna comes to Kelley-Ross Pharmacy Group from NuCara Pharmacy in Pleasant Hill, Iowa where she served as an entrepreneurial pharmacy intern as part of Drake College of Pharmacy and Health Science Delta RX. Additionally, she served as a curricular development assistant for the pharmacy technician program at Des Moines Area Community College. Anna grew up in Menasha, Wisconsin and graduated in May, 2016 with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree along with her Master's in Business Administration from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. As a student, Anna served as president of Drake's National Community Pharmacists Association Student Chapter and was an active member of Phi Delta Chi Professional Pharmacy Fraternity. Everyone's leadership road is different, let's start with where you are today, and how you got into your current position? Discuss how you first felt you became a leader at Drake University and how the opportunities you had there helped you. I think we first talked about NCPA and Phi Delta Chi and a summer internship. The more I talk to students, the more I'm finding the activities they do outside of their regular classroom are the ones that are leading them towards the most satisfying opportunities. You seem to be a magnet for awards and opportunities, can you talk about winning that award for your P4 year and the other opportunities you had? What activities are you doing at Kelly Ross Pharmacy Group? You mentioned some exciting work with keeping patients with cardiovascular conditions out of the hospital. Washington State is gearing up for January provider status, can you tell us what Kelly Ross is doing to move forward with that opportunity? My wife completed her community pharmacy residency at an excellent program at the University of Iowa and landed a very clinically focused job working at the VA hospital. I think many of our listeners are familiar with the residency match, but some very good residencies are outside the match including some community residencies, can you explain how you chose which residencies to apply to in and outside of the match? What blanket advice do you have for the many residency hopefuls as they descend on New Orleans on October 15 to 19, 2016 for NCPA and Las Vegas this December 4th through 8th for ASHP? I was a guest on one of my friends first video blogs, Kelly Ross!!! She did great!!! My friends at Ross Mortgage recently invited me to guest blog on their At Any Rate blog to talk about the dos and don'ts of using credit cards during the holiday season. It was Kelley's first time doing a video blog, and she did great! Here's a sneak peak of what we discussed: Don't be tempted to open new credit cards (no matter how good the deal is)In the spirit of Black Friday and the holiday shopping season, credit card companies and merchants alike will be offering "special deals," such as cash-back bonuses, reward points and exclusive discounts for opening new credit cards. Don't let these offers tempt you to open new lines of credit, especially if you plan on purchasing a home in the near future.Do spread your credit card debt over multiple credit cardsSpreading your purchases across three to five credit cards, as opposed to putting every purchase on one card, will help keep your balance for each card below 50% and minimize the impact on your credit score. To get more tips on using credit wisely during the holidays, read the full blog post on Ross Mortgage's At Any Rate blog. In this video we talk about credit and credit scoring to follow the YouTube channel free click here= http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=sullythecreditguy
