It's our 5th and final day of the SXSW Film Festival coverage, and we're ending it with 3 narrative films that we really loved!Roommates is a short film that follows 2 college roommates who were paired together because they're disabled, as things get personal and the vodka starts flowing. We were joined by writer/director Ashley Eakin and the film's stars Kelsey Johnson and Kiera Allen, who explain their bonding session in preparation for the film, the importance of representation for disabled people, and how Paul Feig became a producer on the project. In the short film Dear Mama..., the death of rapper Tupac Shakur ignites different reactions from a teenage girl and her father, which ultimately leads to them dealing with the tragedy and loss in their own family. Director Winter Dunn and actor Mykayla Lashae Bartholomew discuss the importance of talking about grief, the significance of having a cast and crew of 99% women of color, an old tech alert (this film is set in the 90s), and the cultural significance and impact of Tupac Shakur. The Prank is a feature length film about an overachiever high school student and his slacker friend who decide to play a prank on their high school teacher that ends up going further than they ever could have expected. We were joined by director Maureen Bahroocha and one of the film's stars, actor Ramona Young, who explain what the energy was like on set by having a cast of established actors (ie: Rita Moreno, Keith David, Kate Flannery, and Meredith Salinger) and fresh young faces (ie: Ramona and Connor Kalopsis). We discuss the many genres that this film covers, how the story touches on current topics such as the spread of fake news and journalistic integrity, and our collective disbelief that Rita Moreno is 90.BIG THANKS to our friends over at Lost Republic for sponsoring this year's coverage of the SXSW Festival, and for being The Official Whiskey of The Bitch Talk Podcast... visit them at LostRepub.com and find them at your local pub or bottle shop. Actress Kiera Allen was named by The Hollywood Reporter as one of their breakout stars of 2020, due in no small part to her performance opposite Sarah Paulson in Hulu's psychological thriller Run. She is the first wheelchair user to star in a major thriller in over 70 years, which has advanced the conversation about disability representation in the industry. Kiera has a collection of regional theater credits, including the world premiere of Bekah Brunstetter's Girl #2, and is currently studying Creative Writing at Columbia University. She can now be heard as Pansy Freehold in the Broadway Podcast Networks's new original radio comedy TWITS, starring opposite Michael Urie and Christian Borle. Kiera talks about being exposed to the world of theatre from a young age, and how as a result of growing up around creatives, she learned about the hard work and dedication required to succeed, as well as to have respect for the process. She speaks candidly about holding space on social media for important conversations pertaining to the disability community, and shares her thoughts on being called “an inspiration”. Keira also chats about working on TWITS, and why she is proud to be a part of the project. In this episode, we talk about: Finding inspiration from the new Beatles documentary Mental health, and why she finds acting and writing therapeutic Being in a writer's group with Tom Alan Robbins Booking her debut feature film role opposite Sarah Paulson Changes she hopes to see in the industry pertaining to disability and representation Connect with Kiera: IG: @kierajallen Twitter: @kierajallen Listen to TWITS on Broadway Podcast Network Watch Run on Hulu Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Thanksgiving . Like everybody (we hope), it's just us this year. So being that neither of us couldn't care less about the bird... no bird. We do care about our Italian roots, though! Elaine is making the escarole soup with little meatballs. Fried up the meatballs and sausage for the "gravy" (go Philly.) Travis is making ravioli, Italian stuffing, and shrimp cocktail, or as Donald Sutherland calls it, shrimp "caulktail." Travis is making deviled eggs, and Elaine is making stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon. And of course... "We got pie!" (see Toby Huss in Carnavale to get the reference!) Lemon Merangue and Cheesecake, because we also don't care about pumpkins either! Pix to come!Next week we'll go back to regular binging and purging-yeah, The Crown (ouch) and The Undoing and Fargo probably. But it's Thanksgiving weekend and since you are making tiny feasts and have no visitors, movies and revisiting old TV is on the menu. We are going for stuff you may not have seen! And just like our cooking, there is no guarantee of quality.Knock Knock (Netflix)Leap of Faith (Shhudder)An excellent doc about movies, music, art, and the making of The Exorcist. Is Friedkin a maniac? You decide!Run (Hulu)Sarah Paulson is excellent as always and newcomer Kiera Allen is worth a look.Much better choice along the same lines. The Act is also on HULU. Tom of Finland (HULU)This one is absolutely brilliant, so save it for after dinner and def after the kiddies go to bed. Tom of Finland's work is in museums such as MoMA, Art Institute of Chicago, LACMA, and his home country's Kiasma. If you want to know more about Touko Laaksonen 'Tom of Finland', check out Tom of Finland Foundation .We love Pekka Strang! We'll keep looking for movies starring Pekka.
