A few weeks ago, I was delighted to take part in a panel at the SXSW Festival, produced by ATMA Church in Austin and hosted by human optimization coach JJ Ruescas. I had a blast hanging with other thought leaders in the psychedelic renaissance space and sharing knowledge gleaned from our medicine teachers.Joining me on stage were Psychedelic Coaching Institutes's Joseph Enew, The Temple Project's Sarah Solstice, and former guest on The Life Stylist, The Spiritual Psychiatrist Dr. Samuel Lee.I talk about encountering psychedelics when I was using drugs, juxtaposed with the very different relationship I began to have with them after I was 22 years sober. I also lay out my personal process of integrating plant medicine journeys, and how I see plant medicine aiding the force of evolution on Earth. You'll also hear Sarah's story of discovering her inner innocence and connecting to the Divine Feminine, learn about Dr. Sam's awakening on plant medicine and why separation from our Higher Self is the only real sickness, and take in Joseph's experience of trauma healing and rebirth with the help of mushrooms. Sit back, take a microdose (or a macrodose), and enjoy this romp through the modern psychedelic healing landscape.DISCLAIMER: This podcast is presented for educational and exploratory purposes only. Welcome to the South By Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas!Holy shit, this interview is a doozy. To our regular listeners, this episode is more of a #BasicBitch than an interview, and at one point the tables were turned and Erin and Ange were the ones receiving questions. Let's just say that we had a meeting of the minds with these ladies, and this is (hopefully) the beginning of a beautiful friendship.Mother of the Dawn is a short film about a female truck driver in Brazil who started having visions of extraterrestrials in the 1950s. These visions led her to start her own community/religion of followers that has over 800,000 members, yet is still relatively unheard of. We were joined by director Janell Shirtcliff and producer Daisy O'Dell, and while our conversation definitely discusses the importance of their short film and how much they cherish this community of people and their beliefs, it also ventures off into the unknown (in the best way possible). Risa Taniguchi is arriving at the forefront of the dark techno wave that has washed over the underground in recent years. The Tokyo born - and based - artist has spent the last four years cultivating a lo-fi sound of distorted textures, fizzing synths and a quietly burning energy, which consumes all who hear it. Preferring to play sets which are "late night, for the weirdos", Risa has a knack for getting crowds in a nocturnal trance, before delivering shocks and surprises with a curious motif or unpredictable element. For those who like to cut loose in a dark environment, she is the perfect selector. In the studio as well as the club, Risa focuses on the drums, programming kicks that bring visceral and often aggressive thrills next to a uniquely addictive layer of well designed snares and hi hats. Her signature has become her own subtle and intriguing vocal samples, best heard on Slipped My Mind and Enclozed. She adds layers of acid bass and an always raw, edgy aesthetic. Having experienced them first hand whilst living in London, in 2010, Risa also has an enduring love of underground UK bass sounds, which can be heard in many of her tracks. The multi-talented act is also formally trained and a skilled player of the piano, who continues to play daily. She is a "classical music nerd" too, but of course prefers to explore the minor rather than major end of the scales. Since her first release back in 2018, Risa has attracted high profile interest from A-list players Amelie Lens, Dense & Pika, Pan Pot, Perc and Daniel Avery; has hit the Top 5 of the Beatport's Leftfield Techno Chart and played everywhere from SXSW Festival in the US to De Marktkantine in Amsterdam, Watergate in Berlin and of course all the most revered spaces all across Japan including Contact, Womb, and Vent. Despite the pandemic, 2020 has proven to be a high watermark for Risa as she has delivered a continuous flow of new music, primarily on Pan Pot's Second State and on Dense & Pika's Kneaded Pains. With both of these mighty techno duos giving Risa their support and platforms, it has enabled her to start taking her first major footsteps into Europe, picking up her first headline bookings in Hungary and the UK. BRYAN BLACK aka BLACK ASTEROID started his music career as a sound designer and keyboard tech for PRINCE at PAISLEY PARK STUDIOS in his hometown of Minneapolis. While working for Prince, black proceeded to create his own music- some of the most innovative techno records released on labels such as MUTE and KOMPAKT. These records caught the ear of MARTIN GORE from DEPECHE MODE. Soon after, Black was on tour with Depeche Mode with his band MOTOR, and recording songs with Martin Gore at his home studio in Santa Barbara and Berlin. Together Black and Gore wrote a top 40 single “Man Made Machine”. In 2011 the debut BLACK ASTEROID single, “Engine 1” introduced Black Asteroid to the world, and introduced an industrial rock sound into techno that quickly took off, propelling Black to play at clubs such as Berghain, Fabric London and major festivals. The focus was in favor of song structures and vocals in a techno template.
After a string of EPs, the debut album “Thrust” was released in 2017 with many cross over singles, featuring vocals from ZOLA JESUS, COLD CAVE and MICHELE LAMY. The fashion designer RICK OWENS picked up on what was happening, and used Black's music for his runway shows in Paris. The two quickly became friends and collaborators.
Currently Black Asteroid is prepping a new album and several EPs, in addition to working in the fashion world, having just released a collection of sunglasses with Valley Eyewear, and music for Raf Simons and Rick Owens.

It's our fourth time speaking with a couple of our favorite documentarians (RBG, My Name is Pauli Murray, Julia) - Julie Cohen and Betsy West about they're latest film, Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down which does not disappoint.  Former congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot in the face in 2011 at an in-person constituent event in a supermarket parking lot. She was severely injured and, at first, it was reported that she died from her injuries. The film Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down takes you on a journey of Gabby's life from her humble beginnings, through her incredibly painful and heartbreaking recovery (shout out to her husband, former astronaut,  and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly for being the ultimate caregiver!)  to her fighting for stricter gun laws through her non-profit Giffords. We spoke with Julie and Betsy about this incredibly timely film and about how they were able to land (spoiler!) President Barack Obama, Gabby Giffords gift of music knowledge, a special surprise that was found in the Kelly/Giffords freezer, how important music therapy was for Gabby's recovery, and so much more. Their raw and vulnerable artworks create a space for reflection and connection.Duel Diagnosis began with a conversation. It was just a conversation between Dave and PADHiA, two friends who failed to shave their jagged edges off and fit in somewhere “normal”. We were joined by writer/director Ashley Eakin and the film's stars Kelsey Johnson and Kiera Allen, who explain their bonding session in preparation for the film, the importance of representation for disabled people, and how Paul Feig became a producer on the project. In the short film Dear Mama..., the death of rapper Tupac Shakur ignites different reactions from a teenage girl and her father, which ultimately leads to them dealing with the tragedy and loss in their own family. Director Winter Dunn and actor Mykayla Lashae Bartholomew discuss the importance of talking about grief, the significance of having a cast and crew of 99% women of color, an old tech alert (this film is set in the 90s), and the cultural significance and impact of Tupac Shakur. The Prank is a feature length film about an overachiever high school student and his slacker friend who decide to play a prank on their high school teacher that ends up going further than they ever could have expected. We were joined by director Maureen Bahroocha and one of the film's stars, actor Ramona Young, who explain what the energy was like on set by having a cast of established actors (ie: Rita Moreno, Keith David, Kate Flannery, and Meredith Salinger) and fresh young faces (ie: Ramona and Connor Kalopsis).

Simone Missick made history for her powerful and extraordinary portrayal in Marvel's Luke Cage as TV's first black female superhero, Misty Knight, and has captivated audiences ever since. Touted as the show's "breakout star," Missick was featured as one of People magazine's "Ones to Watch" prior to the first season premiere. She continued to portray this impactful character in other shows, such as The Defenders and Iron Fist. Simone's other television appearances include CBS All Access' Tell Me a Story, the political thriller Scandal, Wayward Pines, and Showtime's crime drama Ray Donovan. Also, she starred in the comedy short Voicemail, for which she was nominated for the Best Actor Award at the NBC Universal Shorts Festival. Later this year, Simone will star in the second season of the series Altered Carbon, opposite Anthony Mackie. Previously, Simone filmed the lead in the independent film Jinn, directed by Nijla Mumin, which premiered at SXSW Festival in 2018. The film tells the deeply intimate and timely story of a woman who converts to Islam and how this affects her family dynamic. Outside of film and television, Simone's impressive theater work includes the Signature's Paradise Blue, written by Dominique Morisseau and directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Center Theatre Group's Citizen: An American Lyric. Based on a book of poetry by Claudia Rankine, adapted for the stage by Fountain Theatre co-artistic director Stephen Sachs, and directed by Shirley Jo Finney, "Citizen" fuses poetry, prose, movement, music and the video image in a provocative stage adaptation. Also, Missick starred as Sweet Tea in The Road Weeps, the Well Runs Dry at the L.A. Theatre Center, which earned her an NAACP Theater Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2014. Simone lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Dorian Missick, and pup Charlie. Her birthday is Jan. 19. Follow her on Twitter and Instagram @SimoneMissick.
