Nearly every Stanley Kubrick film has been featured on Have You Ever Seen now that we're spending about an hour reviewing Barry Lyndon. In this 663rd episode, we analyze the gold-digging, underwhelming dueler played by Ryan O'Neal, an Irish soldier (turned gambler) who also turns out to be a terrible stepfather. Even though he's good as the opportunistic Redmond Barry, he's outshone by Patrick Magee, Steven Berkoff and particularly Leon Vitali as his lordly stepson. Barry Lyndon is one of the best-looking movies of 'em all, so it appropriately won Oscars for the look and the design. The pace is deliberate and the story is a very blow burn in this episodic epic. So enjoy Cinco de Mayo by hearing us throw it back and forth about these ordinary people in extraordinary times as we play some games of chance with Barry Lyndon. Matt and Frank are back in there continuous quest to cover all of the James Bond movies. This week we get too pretty middling entries:- You Only Live Twice (1967)- Octopussy (1983)In You Only Live Twice, Bond (Sean Connery) is dispatched to Japan after American and Soviet-crewed spacecraft vanish mysteriously in orbit, each nation blaming the other amidst the Cold War. Bond travels secretly to a remote Japanese island to find the perpetrators, and comes face-to-face with Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the head of SPECTRE. The film reveals the appearance of Blofeld, who was previously unseen. SPECTRE is working for the government of an unnamed Asian power, implied to be the People's Republic of China, to provoke war between the superpowers.[4][5]In Octopussy, Bond (Roger Moore) is assigned the task of hunting a megalomaniacal Soviet general (Steven Berkoff) who is stealing jewellery and art objects from the Kremlin art repository. This leads Bond to the exiled Afghan prince Kamal Khan (Louis Jourdan), and his associate Octopussy (Maud Adams), and the discovery of a plot to force disarmament in Western Europe with the use of a nuclear weapon.

This week, after a 40th anniversary sequel went straight to Netflix, we're winding it back to a 23-year-old Eddie Murphy's breakout smash as a capital-M Movie Star. It's 1984's Beverly Hills Cop, directed by Martin Brest, and starring Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Lisa Eilbacher, Ronny Cox, Steven Berkoff, Jonathan Banks, Bronson Pinchot, and Paul Reiser. This one comes from J Mo's collection as it's a movie he's strangely never seen before, having been burned by other overhyped Murphy comedies of the 80s? Is this one worthy of the hype? We'll find out together, but if you've seen it I think you know. Plus: Hayley's watched Axel F. to see where this franchise is at after 40 years, while Justin's staying hydrated in the heat. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to this discussion, Beverly Hills Cop is currently streaming on both Netflix and Paramount+ in Canada at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Twisters, Gladiator II, The Last Duel, House of Gucci, Napoleon, Speed Racer, Miami Vice (2006), Hot Rod, Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Point Blank, Grosse Pointe Blank, High Fidelity, Charade, Driveaway Dolls, Maid, Blockers, Metro, Trading Places, Bowfinger, The Other Guys, The Santa Clause, True Romance, Scarface, Cobra and Tango & Cash among others. We're back next week to tee up Deadpool & Wolverine by watching Hugh Jackman's previous collaboration with director Shawn Levy: a silly sci-fi rock-em sock-em robot boxing movie from 2011 called Real Steel, with Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Kevin Durand, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix and free with ads on the CTV app. And of course, we'll close out the month of July by inducting Twister into the pod canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I'm joined by acclaimed actor, musician and activist Tam Dean Burn. Once dubbed 'The scariest actor in Scotland', Tam talks about how he saw acting as an escape route to possibility and how that vision evolved into a prolific career spanning nearly 50 years. From working with the likes of Steven Berkoff and Irving Welsh to his more recent work raising climate awareness with children Tam has always searched for meaning. He also talks openly about the life changing event that led him to re-valuate his perceptions around mental illness and how that has since informed his work. Please join me as we look a life through a different lens.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Tam initially saw acting as an escape from a troubled home life and difficult relationship with his mother, opening up a whole new world of possibilities. Punk music became an outlet for Tam's anger but he realised acting allowed him to channel his energy in a more constructive way through the discipline of performance. Working with directors like Steven Berkoff who celebrated working-class stories helped Tam find meaning and belief in more alternative, physical styles of theatre. Being stabbed by a mentally ill man led Tam to completely re-evaluate his perceptions around mental illness. The experience inspired Tam to create work aimed at understanding voices in people's heads, reducing stigma and supporting mental health. Tam uses daily meditation, yoga and tai chi to find calm, control his anger and recover from difficult situations. Performing climate crisis awareness shows for kids is now a major focus for Tam - helping shift perceptions on protecting the planet. BEST MOMENTS "I was the first person in my whole extended family that moved away from home without being married." "If I'd carried on doing Agatha Christie I would have dropped out, who knows where I would have ended up." "When you've got children, I don't know, then you just think, God, what is it going to be like for my daughter?" "He's been told by the voices that there was a paedophile ring of Scottish actors and I was the only one he recognised." "I felt immediately calm. I didn't freak out at all...it must have been a really sharp knife." "Forgiveness is the key to the kingdom of heaven." "Maybe I could make a series of podcasts with the interviews - podcasts are all about listening." "If life was based on forgiveness, we'd all be in an entirely different place."   ABOUT THE GUEST Tam Dean Burn is a Leith-born actor, musician and political activist who was the mainstay of agit-prop street theatre group Workers Theatre Movement and Artists Against the War from the 1980s on. He was lead singer of the Edinburgh punk band Dirty Reds as featured in the recent award-winning documentary on the Scottish post-punk scene Big Gold Dream. He currently sings in The Bum-Clocks with post-punk legends Malcolm Ross (Josef K) and Russell Burn (FIre Engines) and performs with Tommy Smith's Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. He has had an acclaimed career in theatre, working extensively with Steven Berkoff and at the Donmar, Almeida, National Theatre, Soho Theatre, Glasgow Citizens' and the National Theatre of Scotland. He toured nationally and internationally with his one man show adaptations of Irvine Welsh's Filth and Venus As A Boy by Luke Sutherland. An event hosted and created by On the Tracks of 007, Martijn Mulder.  The event was a reunion of the cast and crew including the movie's director John Glen and Bond girl Kristina Wayborn (Magda) to name but a few.  To breakdown the event I'm joined by author and event organiser Marc Hernandez.  And the other half of Thunderballs, Joe Allen.  Enjoy this one:  1-10 mins (Tom Holland and Tom Cruise talk)  10-38 mins (Lots of talk about John Glen, Steven Berkoff, Nene Valley and more).  You can find me on Instagram here.

Book Vs. Movie:OctopussyThe Ian Fleming Short Story Vs. the 1983 Roger Moore BondThe Margos are feeling very Bond--James Bond that is with 1983's Octopussy based on a short story by Ian Fleming in the posthumously released Octopussy and The Living Daylights. Fleming, a former British Agent and the creator of Bond, passed away in 1964; he had left several short stories and novels that helped to continue the brand, including comic strips printed in newspapers worldwide. (We can't promise not to giggle about the title throughout the episode!)Major Dexter Smythe was a hero in the Second World War and was implicated in a murder scheme and a cache of Nazi gold. In the original story, Bond is a secondary character, and we learn about the tragic life of Smythe. He is a man of only 56 but acts like 96 with loss and alcoholism chasing him through life. Smythe killed a man and let him rot for 15 years under a glacier, so there is that. His pet is an octopus, and Bond allows him the opportunity to either turn himself in or take his own life. While looking for a scorpion fish to feed Octopussy, he stung to death and dragged into the water. All to be eaten by his beloved pet. Bond declares it is an accidental death and moves on. This film brings Roger Moore back into the part of Agent 007 as he fights Russians, Maud Adam as Octopussy--a “wealthy businesswoman and smuggler” in Udaipur, India. The rest is two hours of jaw-dropping stunts, exotic locations, and fewer puns than expected. So between the short story and movie--which did the Margos like better? When a spatio-temporal hyperlink connects 1963, 2013 and 2022, we find ourselves joined by Greg Miller for a conversation about our little fanboy hearts, the anniversary special An Adventure in Space and Time, and the brave, clever and difficult people who created the show that brought us all together. Notes and links Coronation Street got here first, with its dramatisation of the creation of the show — The Road to Coronation Street (2010), featuring our very own Celia Imrie and Shaun Dooley, as well as real-life Doctor Who villain Steven Berkoff. As is now well known, the first Doctor Who novelisation Doctor Who in an Exciting Adventure with the Daleks (1965) invents a different meet-cute for the Doctor and its narrator Ian Chesterton: Ian meets the Doctor, Barbara and Susan after being involved in a car crash on Barnes Common, which is the location of the first scene of An Adventure in Space and Time. The TV interview we mention with Bill Hartnell in 1967 can be found on YouTube, and as a special feature on the DVD release of The Tenth Planet. The story of the rediscovery of this interview can be found in this article in The Guardian from 2013. Australian journalist Annabel Crabb created a four-part documentary called Ms Represented (2021) about the ugly truth of how female politicians have been treated in the Australian Parliament. Here is the incredible story of Underground (1958), a live television drama in which the main actor died during broadcast, and which was partly saved by the intervention of Verity Lambert. And finally, William Russell played an RAF pilot in The Man Who Never Was (1956), and was the lead in the television series The Adventures of Sir Lancelot (1956–1957) alongside Ronald Leigh-Hunt from The Seeds of Death and Revenge of the Cybermen. This episode is with British comedian and actress Emma Bryant, she has gone through many tragedies, some being extremely toxic and abusive relationships! It was through experiencing personal tragedy in the form of a severely abusive relationship that she further realized her true passion was not for posing and looking pretty in front of the camera, but in fact for entertaining, and making people laugh. Through her many contacts gained through her modelling career and previous theatre training, she secured small supporting roles in Season 4 of Game Of Thrones, Brit feature film “FILTH”, which also stars James McAvoy. She soon went on to undertake roles in a feature film acting alongside the late Eastenders star Leslie Grantham (and performed a stand up routine at the premiere in a tribute to him), and she also starred alongside Bond villain and iconic British actor, Steven Berkoff, in the first British virtual reality feature film, which was a huge honour! She currently works as an actress, comedian and media spokesperson for Refuge UK. She is very much looking forward to being a part of many more exciting projects in the near future! Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, we're joined aboard a Soviet submarine by Mark McManus, Jack Shanahan and a low-effort lizard alien, who proceeds to run around the boat in the nude murdering members of the crew. But we're all too interested in Jenna Coleman, David Warner, some guys from Game of Thrones and a discarded fibreglass suit of armour to notice. Notes and links The tale of Steven Berkoff's wilful destruction of the climactic scenes of The Power of Three is told in its entirety in Episode 234: Stop Watching a Kids' Show. Those of you lucky enough not to remember 1983 might need to be told about The Hunt for Red October (1990), a film set on board a Russian submarine captained by a typically Scottish-sounding Sean Connery. Mark Gatiss is definitely looking over his shoulder at that film while he's writing this episode. Nathan refers to the most recent episode of Bondfinger, where we comment on am episode of The Saint which contains scenes of French people speaking to one another in English with a French accent. (Which is just the sort of thing they probably do all the time just to prank us.) Here's El Sandifer's brutal assessment of the Ice Warriors: “…if we're being honest, the fact that they are literally green reptile monsters from Mars has to mark the point where the show has simply given up on monsters and concluded that the audience will accept anything.” Spencer Wilding played Skaldak in this story and was the Wooden King in The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe and the Minotaur in The God Complex. He also played Darth Vader in Rogue One. Fans of hefty lads will enjoy his Instagram. I certainly did. Welcome to Time Giraffe! This time, we make sounds on the internet about the Matt Smith story 'Nightmare of Eden'. In the process, we learn that there is more to it than Z-grade monsters encountering a party of Gearon's pac-a-mac fans. No, this is an Empress and Hecate s***fest, featuring the return of Steven Berkoff and Time Ram favourite, Helen Mirren. There's Della doing stuff, Tryst's terrible accent and a deep message about the internet! Wipe your history, folks.

This week, we have half an hour of fun character-based nonsense followed by a fairly disastrous five-minute Doctor Who episode. But we're all too busy reminiscing about the end of an era to notice. Adam Richard joins us for The Power of Three. Notes and Links This week's real-life villain Steven Berkoff had worked with director Douglas Mackinnon before on a film called The Flying Scotsman (2006), which stars breakout Doctor Who star Jonny Lee Miller as someone who wins a world title in cycling while riding a heavily-modified washing machine or something. Douglas Mackinnon is delightfully oblique in his description of Steven Berkoff's on-set behaviour during The Power of Three in this interview in Starburst magazine. As is now generally well-known, a sixteen-year-old Chris Chibnall appeared on Open Air in 1986 to criticise The Trial of a Time Lord in the presence of writers Pip and Jane Baker. Worth a watch. And finally, in the tag, we all discuss this French & Saunders sketch, in which Dame Helen Mirren delivers an unforgettable acting masterclass. Delightfully, it has been memorialised forever on Dame Helen's very own website. Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, James is @ohjamessellwood and Adam is @adamrichard. Prince has always been a flamboyant and eclectic musician, and with the album and film “Purple Rain,” he found a new art form he enjoyed. And one he won an Oscar for — Best Original Song Score. With his next film, he had conflicts with the director so took over and directed it himself. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we wrap up this year's short guilty pleasure with Pete's pick — Prince's 1986 film “Under the Cherry Moon.” We talk about what's in the film and why, despite its flaws, Pete still gets so much pleasure from this film. And we talk about its flaws and everything that doesn't work in the film. We chat about the actors — Prince, Jerome Benton, Kristin Scott Thomas, Steven Berkoff, Francesca Annis and more — and look at what each of them brings to the table. We discuss the black-and-white look of the film and ponder the reasoning for it, wondering if perhaps cinematographer Michael Ballhaus may know why Prince opted to show it this way despite having filmed it in color. And we touch on the original director and what the circumstances were under which she left the film. It's the guiltiest of guilty pleasures and Pete still loves it despite all its flaws. Regardless of what either of us thinks, we have a great conversation about it. Tune in!

Allan Little talks to the acclaimed actor, writer and director Steven Berkoff. He's spent over 50 years in the theatre and on film, rocking the establishment with his outspoken and often angry views. His work ranges from appearances in A Clockwork Orange and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; to adaptations of Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis. He has also written a number of his own plays – one of which he appeared in at this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He believes the art world is letting audiences down by abandoning serious, quality drama to pursue mass audiences. So what is theatre – art or entertainment?Picture: Steven Berkoff, Credit: Stuart Wilson/Getty Images
