The panic kicked in around page 40. Thirteen years ago, director and screenwriter James Vanderbilt set out to write a film about the Nuremberg trials, a moment when the world chose justice over vengeance, putting Hitler's right-hand man Hermann Göring and 23 other high-ranking Nazis before an international court. The story centers on a U.S. Army psychiatrist assigned to evaluate the defendants and determine if they were fit to stand trial. Russell Crowe stars as Göring, with Rami Malek as the American trying to understand the psychology of evil. Nuremberg opens in New Zealand cinemas this Thursday. Director James Vanderbilt joins me now.

Eighty years ago, the Nazi high command was put on trial in Nuremberg. A brand new film, named for the trials, follows a lesser-known story, that of a US Army psychiatrist tasked with determining whether the detained officials were fit to stand trial. It features Kiwi actor Russell Crowe as the charismatic Hermann Göring, Hitler's longtime second in command, and Rami Malek as psychiatrist Douglas Kelly. The film was written and directed by James Vanderbilt, best known for his work on The Amazing Spiderman and Zodiac. As much as the film is about the atrocities committed by the Nazis, it's also very much about the dynamic between Göring and Kelly. Vanderbilt told Jack Tame that one of their early inspirations was ‘Silence of the Lambs', with a person going into a cell and sitting with a prisoner. “In our film they're both trying to get over on each other a little bit, they're both trying to get something out of each other.” “I sort of loved the idea of these two men, both trying to play each other, and yet at the same time, connecting in a way neither of them saw coming,” Vanderbilt said. “That to me just felt delicious.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The history books will tell you that World War II ended on September 2, 1945. The filmmaker James Vanderbilt, however, will tell there was still one last battle left to fight as the conflict officially drew to a close. It was a battle to be fought not in the trenches but in a court room, with the eyes of the world watching and the stakes were impossibly high. The Nazi party of Germany had been stopped, with the surviving members of their high command arrested. But it wasn't enough to simply shoot them behind closed doors. They had to be brought to trial and held publicly accountable for the unthinkable horrors of the Holocaust – the entire planet made aware of the systematic cruelty they'd inflicted. Giving these charismatic monsters a chance to excuse their actions in front of the global media, though, ran the risk of giving their ideology a chance to spread. Get this wrong and in fifteen years, the Nazis might come back stronger than before, some on the prosecution worried. It's this terrifying prospect that propels James' new historical drama, Nuremberg, starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek, delving into the legal saga that followed the supposed war to end all wars.Today on the show – a spoiler conversation about Nuremberg in which James and I break down the need to tell this story at this moment in time, as the number of people who lived through the Holocaust dwindles. We talk about the throughline between this film and 2007's Zodiac, written by James and directed by David Fincher, which James came on Script Apart to discuss in 2020. You'll hear about how Silence Of The Lambs became an unlikely roadmap for this wartime epic. And we also get into why the movie ultimately arrives at the message that the barbaric tendencies of Hitler and acolytes weren't unique to the Nazi psyche; fascism and authoritarianism could happen – and perhaps is happening – right underneath our noses today.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. In this episode, we examine Nuremberg (2025), James Vanderbilt's ambitious yet uneven historical drama that charts psychiatrist Douglas Kelley's attempt to determine Hermann Göring's sanity during the Nuremberg Trials. Despite its powerful performances—especially Russell Crowe's chilling turn as Göring—the film struggles with tonal inconsistency and a fractured identity that undercuts its moral and psychological depth....

The film Nuremberg, to be released November 7th, 2025 is an American drama written, co-produced and edited by James Vanderbilt. It is based on the 2013 book, THE NAZI AND THE PSYCHIATRIST by Jack El Hai..In 1945, after his capture at the end of the Second World War, Hermann Göring arrived at an American-run detention center in war-torn Luxembourg, accompanied by sixteen suitcases and a red hatbox. The suitcases contained all manner of paraphernalia: medals, gems, two cigar cutters, silk underwear, a hot water bottle, and the equivalent of 1 million in cash. Hidden in a coffee can, a set of brass vials housed glass capsules containing a clear liquid and a white precipitate: potassium cyanide. Joining Göring in the detention center were the elite of the captured Nazi regime. Grand Admiral Dönitz; armed forces commander Wilhelm Keitel and his deputy Alfred Jodl; the mentally unstable Robert Ley; the suicidal Hans Frank; the pornographic propagandist Julius Streicher. Fifty-two senior Nazis in all, of whom the dominant figure was Göring. To ensure that the villainous captives were fit for trial at Nuremberg, the US army sent an ambitious army psychiatrist, Captain Douglas M. Kelley, to supervise their mental well-being during their detention. Kelley realized he was being offered the professional opportunity of a lifetime: to discover a distinguishing trait among these arch-criminals that would mark them as psychologically different from the rest of humanity. So began a remarkable relationship between Kelley and his captors, told here for the first time with unique access to Kelley's long-hidden papers and medical records.Kelley's was a hazardous quest, dangerous because against all his expectations he began to appreciate and understand some of the Nazi captives, none more so than the former Reichsmarshall, Hermann Göring. Evil had its charms.Joining me to discuss, NUREMBERG and the book the film is based on THE NAZI AND THE PSYCHIATRIST: Hermann Goring, Dr. Douglas M. Kelley, and a Fatal Meeting of Minds at the End of WWll—Jack El-Hai

Guy Ritchie's 1000th movie of the last five years - Fountain of Youth - arrived on Apple TV+ this weekend . I had a chance to see it, albeit a little later than I wanted to. I've been a fan of Guy Ritchie's ever since I first blossomed as young film fan; I think he consistently makes fun movies, although they're rarely great, and we're certainly long past his era of truly awful movies at this point. That being said, one of my biggest disappointments of last year was The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which I was pumped for. Similar to that, I really dug the B National Treasure that the trailers of this particular film were selling, and I've been looking forward to seeing it since. Adventure movies are so few and far between these days. Is this a fun one? Find out in this review!Fountain of Youth:Directed by: Guy RitchieWritten by: James VanderbiltProduced by: Ivan Atkinson, Ritchie Atkinson, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Jake Myers, Paul Neinstein, Guy Ritchie, William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, Tripp VinsonExecutive Producers: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tara Farney, Tyler Gillett, Chad VillellaMusic by: Christopher BensteadCinematography by: Ed WildEdited by: James HerbertCasting by: Daniel HubbardProduction Design by: Martyn JohnCostume Design by: Loulou BontempsCast: John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, Eiza González, Domhnall GleasonSynopsis: A treasure-hunting mastermind assembles a team for a life-changing adventure. This week, we're heading down to the basement with no regard for our own well-being as an impromptu theme emerges from our weeks-long run of perfect pictures and Masterpiece Month continues with 2007's Zodiac, directed by David Fincher, written by James Vanderbilt, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Edwards, Chloë Sevigny, Elias Koteas, John Carroll Lynch, Brian Cox, Philip Baker Hall, Dermot Mulroney, Donal Logue and Charles Fleischer. It's very much a movie about obsession, the irresistable pull of a puzzle, and has a compelling case as Fincher's best movie. Watching it now, it's almost an ill omen for the cultural obsession with true crime content and podcasts in the years since, but this one manages to explore its gruesome crimes in a way that doesn't feel gratuitous or exploitative -- a tough needle to thread. If you'd like to watch Zodiac before listening to our discussion, it is currently streaming on Paramount+. Other works discussed on this episode include Knives Out, Glass Onion, Mank, Citizen Kane, The Killer, Spy, The Heat, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Identity Thief, A Simple Favor, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Accountant, Twilight, Saint Maud, Ren Faire, The Idea of You, Kissing Jessica Stein, Friends With Kids, Bad Boys, Bad Boys II, Everybody Wants Some!!, Dazed and Confused, Nope, Evil, The X-Files, the music of Maggie Rogers, Summer of Sam, Fight Club, Se7en, Alien3, The Social Network, Panic Room, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Spotlight, Prisoners, Hustle, Iron Man, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Oppenheimer, Succession, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Devs, Twister, Mr. Show, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Boston Strangler, Cold Case Files, Forensic Files, I'll Be Gone In The Dark, and Accepted, among others. We'll be back next week to wrap up Masterpiece Month with the Wachowskis' magnum opus on what it means to create art under capitalism as we step behind the wheel with Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox in 2007's Speed Racer -- a movie that is sadly not available for streaming in Canada currently. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Dana and Tom and Adam Hitchcock (The Streaming Circuit podcast) revisit the true crime thriller, Zodiac (2007): directed by David Fincher, written by James Vanderbilt, music by David Shire, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr., and Mark Ruffalo.Plot Summary: In "Zodiac," director David Fincher crafts a meticulously layered thriller that unravels the cryptic enigma of the Zodiac Killer, a real-life serial murderer who terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The film weaves together the lives of three individuals – a tenacious newspaper cartoonist (Jake Gyllenhaal), a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo), and a brilliant but tormented crime reporter (Robert Downey Jr.) – all united in their pursuit of the elusive Zodiac.Fincher masterfully captures the haunting atmosphere of the era, immersing the audience in a world of paranoia and uncertainty. The film also expertly navigates the shifting dynamics between obsession, professional duty, and personal sacrifice, as the characters become entangled in the web of the Zodiac's cryptic messages and gruesome crimes.Gyllenhaal delivers a compelling performance as the cartoonist-turned-amateur sleuth, conveying the psychological toll of an obsession that threatens to consume him; Ruffalo brings a gritty authenticity to his role, reflecting the frustration and determination of law enforcement; and Downey injects a dose of wit and charisma into the mix, embodying the pitfalls of journalistic ambition."Zodiac" transcends the conventions of a traditional crime thriller, delving into the psychological toll of an unsolved mystery on those who dedicate their lives to solving it. It's a chilling exploration of the human cost of obsession and the lingering shadows of unresolved mysteries. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at Greatest Movie of All-Time Podcast. For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/zodiac-2007-revisit-ft-adam-hitchcockFor the entire rankings list so far, go to:Full Graded List - Greatest Movies of All-Time Ronny Duncan Studios

One does being one of the greatest directors of all time mean? Either way, it can be safe to say that the impact that Wes Craven had on movie cinema qualifies him as one of the best ever. In 1996, his film, SCREAM, became an incredible hit and many folks feel it is one of the greatest films of all time (more than just a horror film). After Craven's passing, the franchise has continued with SCREAM 5 (2022) and SCREAM 6 (2023). Sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) have been targeted by the next group of psychos that have decided to take on the identity of the Ghostface killer. With a group of new characters and many old, the mystery of who the new murders are begins a new chapter in the franchise. The two new SCREAM films were co-written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, and co-directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Guy Busick. Veteran performers Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, and Hayden Panettiere return while being joined by a new group of 20-somethings. Your co-hosts take a look at the two latest in the franchise and give their thoughts.

This week we have a look at the 2023 film Scream VI. This is Episode #407!Scream VI is a 2023 American slasher film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. It is the sequel to Scream (2022) and the sixth installment in the Scream film series. The plot follows a new Ghostface killer, who begins targeting the survivors of the "Woodsboro legacy murders" in New York City. Much of the cast from the 2022 film returned alongside directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett. The role of New York for this performance is in the sure hands of Montreal, Canada, home of that heart-stealing crooner Gino Vannelli. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $168 million worldwide, becoming the first installment in the franchise to earn over $100 million at the domestic US box office since Scream 2 (1997) and the highest-grossing Scream film in the United States and Canada. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4268760/advertisement
