Marlon Brando improvised what lines he wasn't fed via earpiece, Val Kilmer was a walking menace and the lead role was recast three times. So how does such a famous book get adapted into one of the messiest films of all time? Twenty years ago, Sir Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Napoleon, 1492, Black Hawk Down) directed yet another large-scale historical drama.....this time taking place during the Crusades as we watch war escalate between the Saracins and Christian armies sent over from Europe.  And apparently no one really cared. :( The film received middling reviews and box office upon release.  However following in the tradition of another maligned, often misunderstood genre epic which he directed back in the 1980's - Blade Runner - Ridley Scott arranged to have HIS own personal extended director's cut released to DVD, including at least forty minutes of extra footage.  The reaction was not only universally postiive but THIS version (which Ridley insists is the COMPLETE version of the story he was trying to tell) is now looked upon by many as one of his masterpieces.  It also features a stacked international cast including Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Marton Csokas, Brendan Gleeson, and Alexander Siddig.  Let's head back to the 12th Century Jerusalem to explore this epic tale!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Send us a textKatie and Bridget be upstanders in the Dark Ages while they re-watch Katie's favorite movie from when she was 10: DragonHeart! It's a movie all about good vs. evil, medieval times, and possibly an interspecies romance between a dragon slayer and the last dragon... Or at least that's our fan theory for this movie! Come along as we meet Bowen, a knight of the old code turned dragon slayer, who's just trying to get by while his former student - Einon - literally ravages the land and destroys the kingdom after being given a second chance at life. When Bowen meets Draco, the last dragon left alive, the two team up for an America's Funniest Home Video style heist to get money and find companionship. With the help of some peasants, hijinks, and a possible King Arthur ghost, they decide to fight back against Einon and reclaim the land and their freedom! Spoiler alert: there may be some really sad dragon-related deaths in this movie so bring your tissues!!! Released in 1996, it stars Dennis Quaid, Sean Connery, Dina Meyer, Pete Postlethwaite, David Thewlis, and Jason Isaacs.

This week, SepTIMEber continues as we head back to 14th century France to launch real fireballs out of real trebuchets alongside real Montreal LARPers in a rare misstep from a true master of the popcorn flick. It's 2003's Timeline, directed by Richard Donner, based on the book by Michael Crichton, and starring Paul Walker, Frances O'Connor, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly, David Thewlis, Anna Friel, Neal McDonough, Ethan Embry, Matt Craven, Michael Sheen, Lambert Wilson, Marton Csokas and Rossif Sutherland. Two movies into this theme month and we already be down bad with Stockholm Syndrome, as the dire straits of The Time Machine made this film look like an oasis in the desert comparatively. Alas, it is a deeply flawed flick to be sure, and for the very first time one of our hosts could not make it over the finish line. Plus: a bit of listener mail makes Hayley finally explain her longstanding beef with Ted Lasso. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our conversation, good luck! Despite being a Paramount movie, Timeline is not available on Paramount+ but is rentable on YouTube and the Cineplex app at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Rebel Ridge, Green Room, Blue Ruin, Kinds of Kindness, Poor Things, The Favourite, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Emperor's New Groove, Child's Play, M3GAN, English Teacher, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, Almost Live!, Ready Player One, Backspot, I Like Movies, Sabrina Carpenter's album Short & Sweet, The Dana Carvey Show, Too Funny To Fail, 300, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Midnight in Paris, Pushing Daisies, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, Olympus Has Fallen, Greenland, Geostorm, Superman II, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon, Maverick, Radio Flyer, The 13th Warrior, Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow, Paycheck and The Perfect Score. We'll be back next week with a little ADHD-TPB, as SepTIMEber rolls on with a movie J Mo torrented off the internet roughly 15 years ago and never got around to actually watching: 1979's Time After Time, starring Malcolm McDowell and David Warner as H.G. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we're covering a trio of Neo Noir films set in the city of…where else? Los Angeles, as we discuss 1998's The Big Lewbowski, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen and starring the extraordinary Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, John Tutturo, Ben Gazara, David Thewlis, Tara Reid, Peter Stormare, Leon Russom and Sam Elliot against 2014's Inherent Vice directed by Paul Thomas Anderson starring Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Benicio Del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Maya Rudolph Martin Donovan and Hong Chau, topped off with 2018's Under the Silver Lake  directed by  David Robert Mitchell  and  starring Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, Topher Grace, Grace Van Patten,  Riki Lindhome, Wendy vanden Heuvel, Callie Hernandez, Jimmi Simpson, Zosia Mamet, Jeremy Bob, Rex Lynn, Patrick Fischler and Sydney Sweeney. My guests today are Roseanne Caputi and back by popular demand, Gordon Alex Robertson! Before contemplating the endless currents of depth and consciousness, man, the synopses:  The Big Lebowski,  follows a lot of ins-and-outs and what-have-you's of a very complicated case when two goons working for porn king Jackie Treehorn mistakenly burst into the apartment of Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski  demanding money that his supposed wife Bunny owes Jackie.  Realizing their mistake but still adding the flourish of urinating on the Dude's favorite rug, the pair leaves and gets the hang loose and tolerant Dude's dander up.  Dude the sets off finding the wealthy Jeffrey Lebowski that the pair were looking for and asks him for compensation for his soiled rug. The Big Lebowski flat out refuses the request, calls the Dude a bum, and kicks him out of his house. Surprisingly, a few days later The Big Lebowski summons The Dude to his mansion and asks him to act as a courier to a group of nihilists who have abducted his wife Bunny and are demanding a million dollars in ransom. With his reactionary ‘Nam vet bowling buddy Walter Sobchak at his side, the Dude enters a web of deception, greed and pain as he tries to make sense of the convoluted and problematical condition that he finds himself in.  Inherent Vice ups the ante with ex-cop and junkie P.I. Larry “Doc” Sportello who follows a trail of real estate fraud, heroin smuggling, corrupt federal agents and dentists when his ex-girlfriend Shasta Faye re-enters his life and gives him the tip that her current boyfriend, real estate tycoon Mickey Wolfman, has a wife who is trying to have him committed. With rival LA Police Lt. Detective Christian “Bigfoot” Bjornsen working alternately, with and against him, Doc plows into the labyrinthian case headfirst aided by only his wits and piles of weed and coke in the desperate quest for the truth.  Under the Silver Lake follows a journey through endless hidden messages, conspiracies and millennial self-discovery as perennial slacker Sam tries to uncover the truth regarding the disappearance of his beautiful neighbor Sarah, who vanishes without a trace a day after billionaire industrialist Jefferson Sevence is killed a car crash. Which film best exemplifies the whole L.A. thing? Find out!

In a quatrain Nostradamus stated: "In the year 2024, two self-proclaimed cinephiles who uncover full-frontal male nudity in cinema, will uncover Mike Leigh's NAKED". It's crazy right? We can hardly believe it ourselves. But Nostradamus was right, we are covering Mike Leigh's NAKED. In a career best for David Thewlis, co-starring Lesley Sharp, Katrin Cartlidge, Gregg Cruttwell, Claire Skinner, Ewen Bremner et al., we dive deep into the seedy underbelly of urban London and it's nocturnal dwellers in what some have referred to as an "odyssey". Warnings have been shelled out before but NAKED is one which takes you to a very dark place so be advised even if 50% of us still believes this was a "black comedy".

Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. I'm Thinking of Ending Things is a 2020 American surrealist psychological thriller film written and directed by Charlie Kaufman. It is an adaptation of the 2016 novel of the same name by Iain Reid. The plot follows a young woman (Jessie Buckley) who goes on a trip with her boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to meet his parents (Toni Collette and David Thewlis); throughout the film, the main narrative is intercut with footage of a school janitor (Guy Boyd) going to work, with both stories intersecting by the third act. Killers of the Flower Moon is a 2023 American epic revisionist Western crime drama film directed and produced by Martin Scorsese, who co-wrote the screenplay with Eric Roth, based on the 2017 book of the same name by David Grann. Its plot centers on a series of Oklahoma murders in the Osage Nation during the 1920s, committed after oil was discovered on tribal land. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone lead an ensemble cast that includes Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser.

On this week's “epic” episode, we discuss yet another Ridley Scott film, 2005's historical drama - Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut). Based on a heavily fictionalized portrayal of the the Third Crusade, Kingdom of Heaven had mixed reviews and was a domestic flop on its initial release in May of 2005. Later that same year, Scott went back to the film and added back in 45 minutes of footage for a special showing on December 23rd in Los Angeles, California. The new director's cut was embraced by the critics and eventually released on DVD. Most film enthusiasts consider this release to be the definitive version of the film. Though middlingly received both critically and commercially upon release, the film has gone on to become a genuine cult classic, launching a cottage industry of fan screenings, conventions, and even a religion. We discuss the film's patchwork of influences, including larger-than-life characters withing the Coens' orbit and the works of author Raymond Chandler, especially as adapted by Robert Altman for his 1973 film 'The Long Goodbye'. Welcome back to another magical episode of Not A Bomb. This is the podcast where we go back and reexamine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. On this week's episode, the guys tackle a film that grossed over $942,000,000, only for the studio to claim it lost them money. That's right, we are talking Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth film in the Potty franchise and one of the bigger hits of the series. So how did the studio claim they lost money on a movie that almost made a billion dollars? Some creative “Hollywood Accounting”, that's how! Brad and Troy do their best to explain how this accounting practice works and why studios use it. You also get to hear their thoughts on one of the most successful and belovied franchises of all time. Full disclsoure - Brad and Troy are novice Harry Potter fans and one of them hasn't ever really liked the films outside of a single entry. Does this discussion change all of that? The Big Lebowski (/ləˈbaʊski/) is a 1998 crime comedy film written, produced, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. It stars Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, a Los Angeles slacker and avid bowler. He is assaulted as a result of mistaken identity, then learns that a millionaire also named Jeffrey Lebowski (David Huddleston) was the intended victim. The millionaire Lebowski's trophy wife is kidnapped, and millionaire Lebowski commissions The Dude to deliver the ransom to secure her release; the plan goes awry when the Dude's friend Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) schemes to keep the ransom money for himself. Sam Elliott, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tara Reid, David Thewlis, Peter Stormare, Jon Polito, and Ben Gazzara also appear, in supporting roles. The film is loosely inspired by the work of Raymond Chandler. Joel Coen stated, "We wanted to do a Chandler kind of story – how it moves episodically, and deals with the characters trying to unravel a mystery, as well as having a hopelessly complex plot that's ultimately unimportant."[5] The original score was composed by Carter Burwell, a longtime collaborator of the Coen brothers. The Big Lebowski received mixed reviews at the time of its release. Over time, reviews have become largely positive, and the film has become a cult favorite,[6] noted for its eccentric characters, comedic dream sequences, idiosyncratic dialogue, and eclectic soundtrack.[7] In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". A spin-off, titled The Jesus Rolls, was released in 2020, with Turturro reprising his role and also serving as writer and director.[8][9][10]WebsitePatreonTwitterFacebookInstagramRetro Latefee Podcast (@retrolatefeepod) • Instagram photos and videosTikTok ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
