In “Into the Unknown,” an astronomer explores the mysteries of the cosmos and the limits of what science can test. What is time? If the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into? What happened just before the Big Bang? Some of the most head-scratching ideas in physics strain the limits of what science can test. In her book Into the Unknown: The Quest to Understand the Mysteries of the Cosmos, astronomer Dr. Kelsey Johnson describes some of those concepts, and sketches out ways to try to wrap your brain around them. Johnson joins Host Ira Flatow to talk about the limits of scientific inquiry, and what mysteries lie at the limits of science.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.  Subscribe to this podcast. This UVA Speaks podcast features Kelsey Johnson, Professor of Astronomy and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education at the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Virginia. Earlier this year, Johnson captivated audiences at a popular Lifetime Learning virtual event entitled "Mysteries of the Cosmos: Science, Philosophy, and the Big Questions," where she delved into some of life's most profound mysteries. Due to the large number of questions posed by participants, Johnson agreed to address additional inquiries in this podcast. Here, she tackles deep questions about the origins of the universe, the nature of time, and the possibility of other dimensions. Johnson underscores the importance of curiosity and humility when confronting such vast and potentially unanswerable questions, and she champions interdisciplinary thinking as essential for fostering innovation and breakthroughs.   Transcripts of the audio broadcast can be found here.   Kelsey Johnson is a professor of astronomy at the University of Virginia, an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Religious Studies, and she currently serves as the associate dean of undergraduate education at the College of Arts & Sciences. Johnsons points out that being engaged in the larger questions of our existence is also healthy for us. “We need this exposure to the universe to invoke humility, to kindle our humanity, to really spark creativity and curiosity.”  Johnson also speculates on the existence of extraterrestrial life and unexplained sightings, suggesting that, given the vastness of the cosmos, it’s more likely than not that other forms of life exist. “I think it's probably more likely than not that they exist…If there is extraterrestrial life, chances are that they are probably millions or 10s of millions of years more technologically advanced than we are…If they don't want to be seen, we're not going to see them.”  One thing that Kelsey Johnson does want us to see more of is the night sky.  Currently, there are only two spots in the eastern half of the country “that can still reach levels of darkness in the night sky that are considered pristine. And that is extreme northern Minnesota, right on the Boundary Waters, there's a little pocket. And in extreme northern Maine, right up, in the top near Canada.”   Losing access to the night skies results in a further disconnection from the universe. As Johnson points out, the only “accessible forms of awe to humanity over millennia has been the night sky, and now 80% of the global population doesn't have access to it.”  “If they don't have access to [a dark sky], they don't know what they're missing, and they don't know what is being lost.”  Johnson points out that light pollution has largely gone unnoticed, yet its impact on our ecosystem has been devastating. "It's affecting all the flora and fauna," she says. "It now has traceable impacts on a whole host of things related to human health. Everything from insomnia and depression to cancer." Why should people care about fundamental questions of existence or try to understand the principles of our universe? Because we may be the only sentient beings in existence who can! At least, that's what returning guest Dr. Kelsey Johnson, past president of the AAS and the ASP, and author of “Into the Unknown – The Quest to Understand the Mysteries of the Cosmos, tells Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu as our interview resumes. And then we're off and running! Kelsey explains where her passion for astrophysics comes from, and why it's our responsibility to explore the reality in which we live. You'll hear about how really big our universe is and why we need to get comfortable with the unknown – with an assist from Rainer Maria Rilke's “Letters To A Young Poet.” Our first question comes from Violetta, who asks, “What was the most interesting thing that got you into astrophysics?” Kelsey describes how, long before she knew anything about astronomy, she fell in love with Vega while staring at it from the middle of a giant potato field. She talks about what it's like to discover something through a telescope that no one on Earth has ever seen before. Charles shares a memory about hunting for – and discovering – quasars around the Hubble Deep Field (North) when he was a post-doc using the MMT Telescope in Arizona. Kelsey talks about seeing the unbelievable night sky while visiting the site of the ALMA Observatory in the Atacama Desert in Chile. We end the episode with Chuck and Kelsey talking about how hard it can be for parents to get their kids to follow in their footsteps, at least when those footsteps lead to a telescope! Why is star formation the workhorse of the universe? What is a flocculent galaxy? Which cosmic cataclysm creates new globular star clusters? And why are we currently seeing such amazing aurora in unusual places? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome astronomer Dr. Kelsey Johnson, past president of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), and author of “Into the Unknown – The Quest to Understand the Mysteries of the Cosmos.” As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, the auroras that have been occurring during the peak of the current solar max period of the roughly 11-year-long solar cycle. From the Mother's Day aurora borealis in May to the amazing night of October 10, when millions of people as far south as Florida and Mexico were treated to one of the most spectacular, vibrant light shows many of them had ever seen. Kelsey shares the story of the first time she saw an aurora, as a high school student in Minnesota who didn't even know what one was. Upon leaving her boyfriend's house at around 2 in the morning, she saw a brilliantly glowing sky. Kelsey's availability bias kicked in, and her assumption was that it had to be either god or aliens, with the latter being the more likely. Needless to say, the next day the front page of the local paper solved the mystery. And then it's on to a nerdy discussion of existential curiosity, deep, philosophical questions, and her book, “Into the Unknown.” You'll hear what drove Kelsey to write the book, and about her lifelong drive to understand our place in the universe. Kelsey and Allen nerd out over Calabi-Yau manifolds (concepts from string theory), imaginary numbers and complex numbers, Euler's Formula and more, and then, thankfully, it's time for our first question. Johnny asks, “What is a flocculent galaxy, and why are they interesting?” Kelsey says that they're spiral galaxies with spiral arms that aren't very pronounced, that are exceptionally “floofy and chaotic” with very different, but very cool star formation. Chuck and Kelsey explain why star formation is the workhorse of the universe and how important it is. Kelsey also explains why globular clusters are her “favorite” type of star cluster. There are about 150 of them living around our galaxy, and they're almost as old as the universe itself, over 10 billion years old. Kesley studies them to learn how the universe was formed and how galaxies came together. New globular clusters are rare, but they can be created by the collision of two galaxies. That's all we could squeeze into Part 1, but come back in two weeks for Part 2 of "Into the Unknown with Dr. Kelsey Johnson." In this week's podcast, Trevor talked to Kelsey Johnson from the email marketing aWeber about how to use email to generate sales for your eCommerce business. Email is still important! Email is used more than any other communication platform and is still widely used, even among Millenials and Gen Zs. Most people will look at their email daily, so it is a very personal and effective way to reach customers. Unlike other platforms such as social, it is used for work, private message and promotional messages. Benefits of email marketing Email marketing works across almost all businesses and has the following benefits: Drives repeat business. Emails enable merchants to stay in touch with customers and encourage future sales. Nurture future customers. Customers may sign up for an email marketing list as they are interested in making a future purchase Ownership. Unlike marketplaces and social media channels, you have complete ownership of your email list Cheap! Email marketing is very cost-effective. Opt-in is crucial From both a compliance perspective and to ensure good performance, it is essential to get customers to opt to receive emails from your business. Steps to run an email marketing campaign Kelsey recommends the following steps to run an email marketing campaign: Choose a tool. You will need a tool to run your email marketing campaigns that supports list management, sign up forms and automations. Very nice to have are split testing and good reporting. Migrate your existing list. Ensure that any email your port over are recent to prevent ending up in the spam box. Integrate with your eCommerce platform. Systems such as Shopify will integrate with most email markets tools enabling customers to be added to lists automatically. Add a sign-up form to your site. Pop-up forms with a discount are one of the most effective ways to build you list AND incentivise sales Create automations. Automations are email flows which automatically send emails to customers to keep them in the loop. Automations could recommend new products or invite them to follow you on social media (see below). To be most effective, tailor the email to the recipient. Most email marketing tools will enable the email to be personalised, for example, with the recipient's name and product recommendations based on their purchase history. Tips for building a list The bigger your list, the greater your opportunity to make sales. It is never too early to start list building. Strategies for building a list include: Pop up form on your site Tick box at checkout Make listing building part of your social strategy. Link to your email sign-up form from your social profiles and offer an incentive to sign up Recommendated Automations When customers are added to a mailing list, they can be automatically sent a series of emails called an automation. These need only be set up once and can generate a steady stream of sales over time. Successful automations include Welcome series. Do you use email marketing for your business? If you are not yet using email marketing, you are missing out on an ideal opportunity to grow your customer base. In today's episode, Kelsey Johnson, product marketing manager at AWeber with ten years of experience, shares her tips for getting started with email marketing.   Email marketing platforms are relatively simple and inexpensive to set up, so even small businesses can take advantage of them. Kelsey Johnson shares that the first and most important step is to begin building your email list. If you are not active on social media, email marketing can be integrated into payment platforms like Paypal and Shopify, so that when someone purchases a product from you, they are automatically prompted to join your email list. Next, she recommends that you set up an automated welcome series, which are emails that go out anytime someone joins the list. Additionally, you should segment your list into groups so that you can send customers more personalized emails based on their interests.    Tune into this week's episode of Powerful Marketing Tips for a conversation about email marketing and why it is useful for your business. Learn how to get started with an email marketing platform, how to build an email list, and what types of emails you should send.    Quotes • “One of the greatest things about email marketing is that the return on your investment is very, very high relative to other types of marketing. So if you do think that email marketing isn't for you or your business, I always recommend that people try it first and see if the results are there.” (4:07-4:25) • “When you build up your email list, when you create this community of people who are willing to receive your emails, you have a direct line to them, and you own that audience. That list of email addresses and names doesn't belong to the software you use to send the emails out, it belongs to you.” (5:23-5:42) • “Pay attention to your own business and your customers and what they will actually want to hear from you.” (21:33-21:39) • “Sending personalized content to those different groups can really do things like get people to open your emails more often, keep you out of the promotions tab more often, build up that community, build up that trust, and ultimately make more sales in the long run, because you're giving somebody the specific content they want.” (25:15-25:36)   Links Connect with Kelsey Johnson: Website: https://www.aweber.com/ LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/kelseylinnea/ Twitter: www.twitter.com/KelseyColorado   Get access to our Spotify playlist with all of our guests' favorite songs: • https://powerful-marketers.com/podcast   https://powerful-marketers.com/guest-application/   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

It's our 5th and final day of the SXSW Film Festival coverage, and we're ending it with 3 narrative films that we really loved!Roommates is a short film that follows 2 college roommates who were paired together because they're disabled, as things get personal and the vodka starts flowing. We were joined by writer/director Ashley Eakin and the film's stars Kelsey Johnson and Kiera Allen, who explain their bonding session in preparation for the film, the importance of representation for disabled people, and how Paul Feig became a producer on the project. In the short film Dear Mama..., the death of rapper Tupac Shakur ignites different reactions from a teenage girl and her father, which ultimately leads to them dealing with the tragedy and loss in their own family. Director Winter Dunn and actor Mykayla Lashae Bartholomew discuss the importance of talking about grief, the significance of having a cast and crew of 99% women of color, an old tech alert (this film is set in the 90s), and the cultural significance and impact of Tupac Shakur. The Prank is a feature length film about an overachiever high school student and his slacker friend who decide to play a prank on their high school teacher that ends up going further than they ever could have expected. We were joined by director Maureen Bahroocha and one of the film's stars, actor Ramona Young, who explain what the energy was like on set by having a cast of established actors (ie: Rita Moreno, Keith David, Kate Flannery, and Meredith Salinger) and fresh young faces (ie: Ramona and Connor Kalopsis). We discuss the many genres that this film covers, how the story touches on current topics such as the spread of fake news and journalistic integrity, and our collective disbelief that Rita Moreno is 90.BIG THANKS to our friends over at Lost Republic for sponsoring this year's coverage of the SXSW Festival, and for being The Official Whiskey of The Bitch Talk Podcast... visit them at LostRepub.com and find them at your local pub or bottle shop. You can follow director Ashley Eakin on IG & Twitter & FBYou can follow actor Kelsey Johnson on IG & FBYou can follow actor Kiera Allen on IG & TwitterYou can follow the short film Dear Mama... on IGYou can follow director Winter Dunn on IGYou can follow actor Mykayla Lashae Bartholomew on IGYou can follow director Maureen Bahroocha on IG & TwitterYou can follow actor Ramona Young on IG & Twitter--Thanks for listening and for your support!
