Original airdate: June 2, 2000 At some point in our lives, we all struggle with finding a sense of worthiness. Perhaps we've had some challenging life experiences that left us feeling hurt, with bruises that we've never fully healed from. My guest today, Amanda JP Brown, is intimately familiar with the struggle of finding worthiness. A former trauma therapist, Amanda's journey from a high school dropout and drug user to a college graduate with two master's degrees is a powerful testament to personal growth. Her book, “You're Brave Enough: 8 Daily Practices to Be Your Own HERO,” Is a guide for those seeking empowerment. Today, she uses her expertise to help women navigate their shame and stand confidently in their power. During our conversation, Amanda shared a message that is crucial for personal growth. She discussed how we can overcome past shame and become the true heroes of our lives so that we can live up to our highest potential. She encouraged us to create a life where we're free to be exactly who we are, free of expectations, and fully embodying every experience that has made us the people we are today.

In my recent interview with Jeff Savage, we delved into his multifaceted career as a voice actor, author, and marathon runner. Jeff shared insights into his journey from working in the film and music industries in Hollywood to establishing his own voice-over studio, Jeff Savage VO Studio, where he serves clients worldwide. A significant portion of the conversation revolved around Jeff's passion for health and fitness, which led him to become an avid marathon runner and OCR athlete. These experiences were the inspiration behind his book "Savage Resilience: Conquer Adversity and Be Your Own Hero," in which he explores the theme of overcoming challenges and becoming one's own hero. Jeff also co-authored "The Musical Imprint," with both books achieving #1 Bestseller status on Amazon. We are all going to die. However, none of us know when, although some may know how (as with a terminal illness). One thing we can do for ourselves and our loved ones, not knowing when our last day will come, is to prepare for it. We will spare our loved ones from making many complex (and conflicting) decisions. You can be your own hero and that of your loved ones by taking ownership of your life as you're living and in death. Being your own hero means that sometimes, it pays to take chances and take your shot. It means advocating for yourself, creating boundaries, and accepting the consequences of your choices. It's an act of choosing what is in your best interest and of service to your well-being. Being your hero demonstrates self-love and, in turn, shows others what's possible too. No one can live your life for you; unless you do something about it, others will undoubtedly plan your exit, which may or may match your end-of-life wishes. And we are so afraid to talk about death and have these very important issues with loved ones. This begs the question, are we more afraid of dying or living?RESOURCES:Online Grief Recovery Support Group starting 11/30/2022! ________NEED HELP?National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7 support via text message. Is all suffering necessary, or do we suffer unnecessarily at times, and for too long? Good question, right? When we think for too long about something that brings us unhappiness, we prolong our suffering.  Ever thought of that? One of the things to be aware of is our thoughts or judgement, of our surroundings and/or circumstances, past or present. Most often (always, really!), our thinking about a particular event/comment/situation creates our reality… for better or worse. If it was always for the better, I would not be writing this.  But I'm writing (or recording this podcast) for the instances when our thinking creates a reality we do not desire… in other words, unnecessary suffering in one form or another. It is not to say that our circumstances will never causes pain and or suffering… the question is for how long, and is it necessary? When a loved one dies we experience pain and we suffer, but that's not unusual… it's just part of being a human here on earth.  But what about when a significant other “mistreats” us in some way and we're never able to let go of it…  Maybe even after decades?  That may fall under unnecessary suffering, and it would serve us to examine our thoughts about it. Seeking professional treatment/therapy is one way, and another way is to examine our thinking…  Our own interpretation of the facts. Today I invite you to examine your thoughts about anything in your life that's not just holding you back from enjoying your life to the fullest, but also causing you unnecessary pain and suffering.  It's all in our THOUGHTS!! If there is anything in your life that you feel you want to talk about, I am currently offering a FREE coaching call (no obligation), so feel free to reach out to set up a call to go over anything that doesn't feel right. Warning - this episode contains explicit language. How wonderful it is when you meet someone new and immediately feel comfortable, at ease, and the conversation just flows! This is exactly what Glenn and I experienced in our latest episode with the delightful, thoughtful, questioning, and "super easy and fun to hang out with" Holly McCorriston. Holly's response of "I am a channel through which Universal energy expresses itself" was the jumping off point for an expansive, engaging, and enriching conversation on love, intuition, Knowing (with a capital "K"), critical thinking, and how broken down systems make it challenging for receivers and givers to support and feel supported. A former pharmacist, Holly spoke about how she used to be one of those "experts in the white lab coat." Over time, she discovered that the she had so much more to offer than what she was able to do as a pharmacist, so eventually gave up her licence, following her intuition to become a transformational coach to women on their journeys of self-discovery and empowerment. We talked about being scared to speak, tuning into what feels good vs. what doesn't, self-awareness, self-responsibility, solutions, support, gratitude, being in transition, impending motherhood, binary thinking, holding space for ourselves and others, breathing, and turning attention within rather than always looking outside ourselves for guidance. This, and so much more...! Plus, there's the super fun Rapid Fire Question Round at the end! A new episode posted at least twice a month! At age 16 Barke originally from Zanzibar was arranged to be married to her now ex husband . They shortly after moved to London and started a life and even started a family. For over 15 years Barke was treated as a lesser human by her own husband and spoken to daily like she was a piece of trash . She opens up about her story on ascending beyond the negativity and becoming an internationally acclaimed motivational speaking in the Muslim community. This woman's determination and dedication to make the world a better place are truly inspiring and I hope you enjoy this chat. Barke is also an author and her book " what is your name? We're not trying to be anti-inspirational this week, but ... "you should follow your dreams" is a lie... What do we mean by that? Well, the problem with statements like "Follow your dreams," "BE YOUR OWN HERO," "You be you," is that they're crushing us. They put unhealthy pressure on us to figure out who we are, be a unique person, choose the right career path, and make choices that will lead to LIVING OUR BEST LIFE.  In this episode of Spirit In Motion, Church on the Move Lead Pastor Whit George and Kids Pastor Adam Bush explore the topic of IDENTITY and the statement, "You should follow your dreams." We like to call a statement like that a true lie. There's a hint of truth to it, but ultimately the idea has resulted in a misunderstood, broken concept… a true lie. It does us no good to sit around waiting for someone else to come and save us.   Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about showing up for ourselves, making our own decisions and not asking permission from anyone to do it. The sooner we realize that there's no knight in shining armour coming to our rescue and that we're responsible for our own choices, peace, happiness & healing; the healthier and more complete we will be. Now don't get me wrong, I am not saying that we'll never need or want any outside help. From time to time, we of course, will need some assistance, guidance and input from our external world. In fact, it's totally OK and encouraged to seek support in the areas that we're struggling in - so long as we don't make that external support - the end all be all in every area of our life. We don't want to wait around waiting for others to fix us, clean up our messes, complete us or to give you permission to do the things we know we need to do. On maybe one of the most inspiring episodes to date, Annie Mayfield is with us this week. Annie is an author, entrepreneur, and 9-5'er. On the show, we went into detail about her process of writing Be Your Own Hero. Her book was turned down 11 times before being accepted by a publisher. Annie tells how disappointing that process was, but how she kept getting up and going to the next one. Annie is a voice for all twenty-somethings who are on the road to self-development. She talks about the difference between consuming information and taking action, how your why determines your path, and how she takes care of herself while maintaining a busy schedule. Today on Feminine Roadmap guest Amanda JP Brown, author of “You’re Brave Enough: 8 Daily Practices to Be Your Own Hero” takes us on her journey of discovery that taught her how to own all of who she was including all of her decisions, experiences, failings and struggles. Amanda began to realize she had compartmentalized herself because of trauma, segmenting parts of herself to find what she thought was love and acceptance so she turned to face her truth and begin her healing journey. She shares how you can remove the shame and guilt of owning your own story and begin to reintegrate those pieces of yourself that have been hidden or forgotten so you can find the power of who you are and become your own hero. Amanda understands being caught in the depth of unworthiness, settling for what life brings your way, believing that it’s all you deserve but she wants you to know that you are worthy, you do deserve better, you are enough in this moment. If you are ready to start your own journey of owning all of who you are or you’re already on that path and need a traveling partner, this episode is for you. We encourage you to grab a cuppa something wonderful, a good friend and settle in to be encouraged, challenged and empowered to own all of who you are right now, right as you are. www.feminineroadmap.com/episode173/

In light of the current social justice movement + Revolution for the liberation of Black American's, I have decided to re-release some of the most impactful and enlightening conversations I have had on the podcast with Black women and men.    These are conversations that have educated and inspired listeners over the years, and my hope is that now that an even brighter light is being shone upon the issues covered in these conversations- they will continue to deepen our understanding of the current tasks at hand.    As many of you know, Jeanine Staples is a force to be reckoned with, and a woman I have called a friend and teacher for years. She was one our most talked about 2019 Ignite Your Soul Summit speakers, and the work she is doing in the world is unparalleled. We had this conversation back in 2017, and white supremacy and white privilege were two of the many topics we covered back then, making this a really powerful discussion to bring back into the light today. Jeanine stunned the world (and me) with her TED Talk, “How To Die Peacefully”, when she challenged the notion that humans are born, they live and then they die. No- Jeanine believes we are born and then we die a thousand tiny deaths. She claims, we can only learn to live, when we learn to die those deaths peacefully. … and this is just what I learned before our conversation. Dr. Jeanine Staples is the Associate Professor of Literacy and Language, African American Studies, and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Penn State University. She is the founder of “The Supreme Love Project” , a movement which seeks to embolden marginalized people to heal their souls and liberate themselves. Not to mention, she is a genius, a soul excavator, a humanist and an all around “Be Your OWN Hero”, kind of Wonder Woman. I am beyond thrilled and honored to share this conversation with you. I just know that these words will touch you in a way that could literally shift the way you live your life, today- if you let them. So, grab a notebook for this one, sit down, and get ready to let it all sink in to your soma (how Jeanine refers to our bodies) and your souls. I hope you find this conversation as powerful as I do.  In This Episode You Will Learn: How our to heal our soul terrors and begin our own Personal Liberation Project Why seeking external affirmation can only lead to suffering What it means to “Go Deeper” The truth about our conditioned fear of experiencing pain How to teach our children to understand their body and their pain How your unconscious beliefs about money hold you back from being free What it means to own your womanhood What your “lover identity” is How to begin to stand up for social injustices and become a voice for for the voiceless Soul Shifting Quotes:  “My generation of terror was so complete and so huge, I didn't have that ability to bide my time and create a status quo. I had to break.” “I was at what I thought was my bottom. And the voice of God, the Holy Spirit said… “Go deeper.” “There's so many of us who run from pain. It's suffering that we need to cease, not pain. Suffering is this long term uninterrupted source of despair without hope. That's what we need to move away from. But pain, pain is actually what we need to generate bigger emotional muscle. To grow the capacity to go deeper.” “Let your child get attuned to their body. Because their bodies are instruments for their emotionality.” “Our salvation and our liberation project would not exist, unless there was something we were in bondage to. And that bondage is your pain. Best to become really enamored with it.” “You can only be satiated from the inside out.” “Do I feel real? Or do I feel like I am wearing labels and descriptions that had been given to me.” “I had to really do the work of saying, I am not the woman I want to be. I am not the woman I say I am. And I want to be congruent. I want to BE that person, and not perform that person. “Your interior life is the precedent to any other exterior attachment or endeavor that you want to take part of.”   Links Mentioned:  Links Mentioned:    Learn my 7 Secrets to Uplevel Your Brand & Land Your Dream Clients    Grab your FREE training, How to Call in Your Tribe + Create Content that Converts  Text me at 603-931-4386 Learn more about Jeanine by following her on Instagram: @jeaninestaples Learn more about Jeanine's offerings at jeaninestaples.com   Tag me in your big shifts + takeaways: @amberlilyestrom Did you hear something you loved here today?! A powerful collection of individuals that have taken it on themselves to create a platform for dreamers, high achievers and goal setters, to channel their passions and overcome their fears. With a tagline of “Be Your Own Hero” the project is going from strength to strength as the world wakes up to what can be achieved if we only take action. And in todays episode we will find out if this platform is still going, and if so how has it pushed her on personally to achieve her own status of hero as he is filling more and more positivity into everyday she is on this planet. She is a workshop facilitator, yoga instructor, writer, and personal development coach and  dedicates herself to the arenas of personal transformation, healing modalities, and community building. As she says "In my free time, I enjoy making any kind of creative concoction with my crepe-maker, dancing to music in my headphones in the parks in New York City, and sharing quality time with friends. I am also very passionate about creative expression – especially spoken word poetry, painting (finger painting counts, right?) and salsa and tango dance. In my other time, I have coached individuals; worked designing personal development focused curriculum and leading weekend summits for groups of entrepreneurs and change-makers; served as a camp counselor for an adult summer camp revolving around authentic connections sans technology; created and offered workshops on cultivating passion and purpose; and co-facilitated transformative women's circles and NYC-based programs for career shifts and meaningful work." So can you spend so much time helping other people that you fail to truly look after yourself, or supporting other lead onto an increased personal energy that drives you forward bigtime. And for those people looking to create their own coaching business, what are the key stages that bring it all together? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up even more dots with the one and only Jeanine Cerundolo Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Jeanine Cerundolo such as: Jeanine discusses how she tries to change her mindset to a fun one everyday, and how it has such a big impact on others. Every now and again, if you are lucky enough, you get to connect with people whose words are SO powerful- they just knock the wind right out of you. Jeanine Staples, my friends, is one of those people. She stunned the world (and me) with her TED Talk, “How To Die Peacefully”, when she challenged the notion that humans are born, they live and then they die. No- Jeanine believes we are born and then we die a thousand tiny deaths. She claims, we can only learn to live, when we learn to die those deaths peacefully. Oh, I KNOW;  and this is just what I learned before our conversation. So, grab a notebook for this one, sit down, and get ready to let it all sink in to your soma (how Jeanine refers to our bodies). This one's a game changer. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: How our to heal our soul terrors and begin our own Personal Liberation Project Why seeking external affirmation can only lead to suffering What it means to “Go Deeper” The truth about our conditioned fear of experiencing pain How to teach our children to understand their body and their pain How your unconscious beliefs about money hold you back from being free What it means to own your womanhood What your “lover identity” is How to begin to stand up for social injustices and become a voice for for the voiceless THINGS I ASK: How did you heal your emotional break and move forward? What are the side effects of a life commitment to suffering and avoidance of pain? Why are we so afraid of experiencing pain? How do we meet our children right where they are to support them on their journey? How does this work help bring in more abundance and wealth? How do we start exploring and rebuilding our womanhood? How do we, as white privileged woman who have businesses, who want to say something, who want to stand up, begin? What do we do? SOUL SHIFTING QUOTES: “My generation of terror was so complete and so huge, I didn't have that ability to bide my time and create a status quo. “Your interior life is the precedent to any other exterior attachment or endeavor that you want to take part of.”

Your life is your story. In your story, only you can be the hero. No one else can do that for you. Others can help, guide, mentor, coach or support you, but they are the hero of their own story, not yours. When you accept that you are the only one who can play that critical role in your life, pathways open that can take you almost anywhere you want to go. Be Your Own Hero reveals the major scenes that play out in act 1, 2, and 3. Once you know exactly where you are in your particular story, you can identify what must come next for you in order to be the hero and move forward with the particular storyline that you are a part of at present. Whether its work, relationships, family or major life struggles, once you know what must come next you have the confidence to proceed. You also become aware that there is more going on to life than meets the eye and learn how to move in this world in a way that is uniquely your own. It is based off of Joseph Campbell's 'The Hero's Journey'.Learn how to Be Your Own Hero and you will contribute to this world and make an impact in ways you never thought possible. Refuse to answer the call and you will be perpetually stuck, wondering why your story feels meaningless.Look for highlights from my interview with Naim, coming next week, to see how he applies 'Be Your Own Hero' to his life and the insights that come to him as well as the changes he makes in his life. The content of this episode goes a little longer than 10 minutes. In this world you find yourself with a limited awareness of any major problems in life. You might be vaguely aware that something is off but you can't quite put your finger on it. Scene 2 is the Call to Adventure. Here you begin to realize that whatever life is like for you right now, you want more. There is an increased awareness. You desire for things to change but aren't sure if it's possible. Scene 3 is the Refusal of the Call. Fear rules here and while the hero knows they desire change, they aren't ready to get out of their comfort zone and take action and they are reluctant to change. Sometimes people are stuck here for their entire lives. If they say yes to the call, however, they move on to Scene 4. Meeting with the Mentor. The mentor is sent only when the hero chooses to accept the call and their role is to provide the guidance that is needed through the rest of the story and overcome their reluctance. They have wisdom and have traveled their own journey as a hero in their story already. Act 2, Scene 5 is Crossing the Threshold. Either by choice or by an uncontrollable inciting incident, the hero is pushed from the 'Ordinary World' into the 'Special World' and there is no going back. This is a huge commitment to change. Scene 6 is Tests, Allies, and Enemies. Here the hero is tested often and discovers who their allies are and their enemies and they experiment with the idea of change. The allies support them in their Hero's Journey while the enemies look to thwart their efforts. Scene 7 is Approach the Inmost Cave. This is where the hero begins to prepare for the 'big' change that is coming. Lots of training happens during this time. Training that opens the eyes of the hero and helps them to grow in order to overcome. This leads us to the 'Ordeal', Scene 8. The hero attempts a huge change in their story here and tries something they have never tried before. From this point forward, something will die. No matter how precious this 'thing' is, it must die in order for the hero to move forward and make it back having mastered their journey. Scene 9 is the Reward. The consequences of going through the ordeal are dealt with and the hero really begins to believe they might have what it takes.Act 3, Scene 10 moves us back to the 'Ordinary World' as the hero finds their Road Back. This is a time of major rededication to the change. At this point the hero can refuse the call again, but they will be stuck in the 'Special World' until they commit in full force. Scene 11 is the Resurrection. It is the final attempt at a big change and this is usually the climax of the story. The hero is triumphant in their own life and they know that they have mastered what is needed in order to help others. Which brings us to the final stage, Scene 12, Return with the Elixir. They have realized that they aren't on this journey simply for themselves, but to share with others what they have learned and how they might help those around them. They have final mastery over the 'problem' and are willing and compelled to share with those in need.
