Kim Hudson provides a well-researched and compassionate approach to bridging the worlds of linear and circular thinking. She reveals a core pattern to the inner workings of linear and circular thinking, which holds the key to crossing the distance between them. With this framework we can expand our leadership potential, bring indigenous wisdoms into modern practice, support the co-existence of masculine and feminine perspectives, transform our societal and organizational approaches to issues like climate change, and more! Backed up by scientific research, and drawing on her experience as an exploration geologist, First Nation consultant, archetypal story analyst, and federal land claims negotiator, Hudson offers a book that is as intriguing as it is practical. The Bridge on Amazon.comIf you have a matter, disagreement, or dispute you need professional help with then visit iMediate.com - Email mbrickman@ichatmediation or Call (877) 822-1479Matthew Brickman is a Florida Supreme Court certified family and appellate mediator who has worked in the 15th and 19th Judicial Circuit Courts since 2009 and 2006 respectively. As a historian and author, Hanne Blank Boyd literally wrote the book on Virginity. Her seminal work, Virgin: The Untouched History, is a provocative exploration of the complex concept of Virginity throughout human history. Also enriching this conversation is Kim Hudson, author of The Virgin's Promise, which talks about women's path to finding their own power and authentic selves. This is part four of our four-week journey into the VIRGIN. So far, we have explored the history of the VIRGIN Body — the Hyman Maneuver we call it. The VIRGIN Mind and how forced virtue impacts a VIRGIN Heart that craves to love but often is stained by shame and guilt. In this final chapter, we explore the VIRGIN Spirit with Hanne and Kim. As a bonus, we also included a conversation with Jungian analyst, author, and podcaster Lisa Marchiano. Her new book, The Vital Spark, features a chapter on the Virgin, and we cover Virginity as a symbol of unbroken psychic wholeness. It's a remarkably enlightening and soulful conversation. It's a conversation that was interrupted by a major seismic disturbance. Listen through to the end to hear that earth-shaking event as it happened.

In this episode I am a talking to Kim Hudson, who began her career as an exploration geologist working in remote areas of northern Canada.  She has consulted for First Nations as well as mineral companies, was a land negotiator for the Yukon Land Claims on behalf of the federal government, a member of the Yukon Water Board and Chair of the Yukon Land Use Planning Council. Today she is a workshop facilitator and consultant to businesses, and Territorial and First Nation governments and story analyst.  Our conversation sheds light on the core patterns to the inner workings of the linear and circular thought processes, which holds the key to crossing the distance between them - something which is becoming imperative that the world's thinkers and leaders are able to do. The framework provides a way to expand our leadership potential, be inclusive, receive indigenous wisdoms, support the co-existence of masculine and feminine perspectives, innovate our businesses, and transform our societal and organizational approaches to issues such as climate change and social media which can be seen in a new way.

Kim Hudson grew up in the Yukon, a Hero's daughter with a Cinderella Complex. Basically life taught her many of the things she needed to know to write this book. Kim spent the first half of her career exploring her masculine side, first as a field geologist and later as a federal land claims negotiator. Exploring her feminine side became important to her as she raised her two daughters. This lead me to study Writing for Film and Television at Vancouver Film School, and take courses on mythology, feminism and psychology including a Jungian Odyssey in Switzerland. This theory was developed by closely observing the archetypal expressions that are all around us in movies, music, television, advertisements and stories of personal growth, including her own. The Virgin's Promise is her first book. The Virgin's Promise demystifies the complexities of archetypes and clearly outlines the steps of a Virgin's Journey to realize her dream. Audiences need to see more than brave, self-sacrificing Heroes. They need to see Virgins who bring their talents and self-fulfilling joys to life. The Virgin's Promise describes this journey with beats that feel incredibly familiar but have not been illustrated in any other screenwriting book. “I started out as a field geologist and then I became a land-claim negotiator,” said Kim Hudson. “All of it very masculine, very linear, I would say, and then I had children and thought, ‘what do I authentically want? It was the 70s and women were doing ‘everything man can do' but that changed when I had a child.” During this discovery phase, Hudson found a book by Julia Cameron called The Artist's Way. The book, which was meant to “help people with artistic creative recovery” according to the description, was a major stepping stone in Hudson's career. “I was diligent. I did everything [in the book] twice — all twelve weeks.” “Those years I spent in geology, that's basically a hero's journey,” said Hudson. “You're facing fear, learning to take on challenges and conquer your own fear, and take action anyway. That was my understanding of what life was supposed to be. I got that from Father who was one of those guys.” This led Kim to write her book, The Virgin's Promise: The Virgin's Promise demystifies the complexities of archetypes and clearly outlines the steps of a Virgin's Journey to realize her dream. Audiences need to see more than brave, self-sacrificing Heroes. They need to see Virgins who bring their talents and self-fulfilling joys to life. So much of what we do in education is based around “getting through the curriculum” and checking off skills that students have “mastered.” It's safe to say that this isn't working, and it frankly never has. Every child is different and every child learns at a different rate. The notion that you can teach concepts in a string of ideas and that students will latch onto them in order is archaic. There's a different way to approach teaching and learning and this week's guest, Catherine Saldutti of EduChange has found it. In this episode, we talk about how students and lifelong learners alike can deepen our understanding of concepts over time, the most important thing we need to do as a society if we want students to learn, the role trust plays in education, and what mastery really should look like. This is such an important conversation stuffed full of resources and tools you can take back to your own school or initiative so we can truly start changing education for our future's benefit. About Catherine Saldutti: Catherine Saldutti has over 28 years of experience in secondary education and has served as a teacher, administrator, professional development provider, program evaluator, and learning systems designer. She founded EduChange in 2000 to fundamentally reimagine and redesign the systems and structures that deliver formal education.  Catherine's team of senior designers, master educators, and researchers built relationships with over 350 schools in New York City, several school districts across the USA, and in Sao Paulo, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Culiacan, and Tijuana. After a 12-year implementation period in eight global locations, alongside three rounds of academic & scientific peer review, The Integrated Science Program is now powered by Sustainable Open Educational Resources (SOER) that removes disciplinary silos, is competency-based, is grounded in the Sciences of Learning & Development (SoLD) and UDL, is digitally deployed internationally using four different models, and may be customized to local and national requirements.  Catherine also holds a patent for Concept Construxions, a pattern-recognition system that helps learners construct concepts and acquire academic or technical language in social, collaborative ways. Catherine earned degrees from Stanford University, where her independent study on International Technology Education contributed to J. Myron Atkin's work on TIMSS development, and The Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she served as Chair of the Dean's Advisory Committee.  Jump in the Conversation: [2:15] - How Catherine is creating change [4:19] - Some of the basics of supporting learning [4:53] - What we've learned about learning [7:43] - Why the one and done model doesn't work [8:43] - Students aren't blank slates [10:45] - The #1 thing we need to do if we want kids to learn [12:09] - the heart of the work at Educhange [14:28] - What needs to happen to start to make this change [16:46 ] Humans have an emotional relationship with time and it's one of our biggest problems [19:40] - The role of “mastery” of standards and what it means [24:38] - What about systems and structures we have in place need to be/can be dismantled [26:30] - Turbo time [31:04] - What people need to know about the concept of time [34:09] - How others can become activists and transform schools [37:18] - Catherine's Magic Wand [39:02] - Maureen's takeaways Links & Resources 10 Design Shifts for Open Learning Architecture Catherine's Design Blog Programs, Courses, Projects, Lessons: Reshaping High School Content for Equity Research: Implications for the educational practice of the science of learning and development Video: The Physics and Philosophy of Time with Carlo Rovelli Book: Thinking in Systems by Donella Meadows Book: The Rise: Creativity, the Gift of Failure, and the Search for Mastery by Sarah Lewis Book: Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson Book: Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art by Stephen Nachmanovitch Dame Stephanie Shirley's TED Talk Podcast: The Promise of a Brighter Kingdom with Kim Hudson, author of The Virgin's Promise Talk: Redefining Economic Value with Mariana Mazzucato Episode 72: Bringing Psychological Safety to Our Teachers with Michael Vargas Episode 89: Achieving Excellence Through Equity (not Equality) in Education with Steven Cleveland Email Maureen Maureen's TEDx: Changing My Mind to Change Our Schools The Education Evolution Facebook: Follow Education Evolution Twitter: Follow Education Evolution LinkedIn: Follow Education Evolution EdActive Collective Maureen's book: Creating Micro-Schools for Colorful Mismatched Kids Micro-school feature on Good Morning America The Micro-School Coalition Facebook: The Micro-School Coalition LEADPrep

Elisabeth also talks about the crucial element of layered stories that shaped her novel, what it's like to tell a story when you don't know who the audience is, and brings forward the concept of archetypal energies within storytelling. Together, she and Heather weave cycles of birth, death, and rebirth into the conversation and question if memoir and myth are separate at all, or merely threads of the same universal tapestry. Welcome to the Story Grid Showrunners Podcast, dedicated to helping writers master their genre.  If you’re writing a book and you want to make it stand out, we can help you.  How? We’ll be watching and analyzing hit TV series using the Story Grid and will help you apply what we’ve learned to your own writing. Why the Story Grid? There are many templates and schools of thought that can help you self-edit your book. The Story Grid takes many of these concepts, for example, Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey or Kim Hudson’s Virgin’s Promise or Save the cat! Writes a Novel, and allows you to understand why your novel isn’t working. So what does the Story Grid have to do with TV series?  In the Story Grid Universe, we believe that you can learn from masterworks. At www.storygrid.com you can find resources showing how and why Silence of the Lambs is a classic thriller, and why Pride & Prejudice is still a celebrated love story even though it was published over 150 years ago. If you want to see films analyzed, go to the Story Grid Editors Roundtable. We love those guys, and they do an awesome job showing how films work. We are three Story Grid Editors - Parul, Mel, and Randall - and we met while studying under Editor Shawn Coyne. In an ugly business hotel in the wonderful city of Nashville, Tennessee we bonded as we studied together; we analyzed novels, films, songs together. We’re part of a select group of Story Grid geeks who help writers write better stories using the story grid methodology. When we work with writers we often find ourselves asking them to look up kick-ass TV series. So, for example, if you’re writing a thriller, I might ask you to take a look at the subversive Villanelle in Killing Eve, In this podcast, we’ll create shortcuts for you.  Each season we will select a TV series and help you understand why it works, episode by episode and overall. We’ll look at the characters and why they’re memorable or not.  If you're writing a novel, screenplay or TV series, our show will help you look at storytelling from an editor's perspective.  We’ll keep our analysis to around 20 to 30 minutes long, so you can pop the kettle on, and get yourself a cup of tea, and join us.  Are there any shows you would like to have analyzed? Drop us a line. References:www.sgshowrunners.comwww.storygrid.com Editor Webpages:Melanie: Parul: Randall: www.randysurles.com Podcasts: Story Grid PodcastStory Grid Roundtable Podcast Books:The Story Grid by Shawn CoyneSave the Cat! I recently released a NEW course: The Entrepreneur’s Story Creation Guide. The inspiration came after I read Kim Hudson’s book, The Virgin’s Promise, which is about 13 archetypal stages seen in literature and film. As I thought about the stages, I realized that they all felt really familiar in MY life — they essentially told my story as an entrepreneur! Intrigued, I set out to see if I could modify the stages and apply them to any entrepreneurs journey. AND…I think I can! (Curious? Grab the course and see if you can too!) Kim does a wonderful job sharing about her journey of creating the 13 stages, or archetypes, in her book, the Virgin's Promise. For that reason, I recorded my own reading of the book's preface so you can hear her words and journey. (Find it here.) Did "virgin" make your head tilt? I know, I know...it's not my favorite image either! Don't get hung up on that thought! It's not about actually being a virgin. It's about owning yourself and the light within. Hang with me and it will all come together.* Please remember that, in the same way the Hero's Journey is meant to transcend gender and apply to an overall archetypal pattern, the Virgin's Promise is an overall archetypal pattern that can be applied to the inward journey of growth and self-enlightenment of any person. You can find Rebecca Balcarcel (and her award winning YA book) on her site. I mentioned grad school (woohoo!). I'll be attending Saybrook University, starting in January.
