Your brain on sex, love, and rejection with biological anthropologist Helen Fisher. What happens in the brain of someone who gets dumped? One answer is increased activity in the nucleus accumbens, which is the same brain region that becomes active when you become addicted to cocaine, cigarettes, or gambling. Romantic love, in other words, is an addiction. That's one key takeaway from the research of anthropologist Helen Fisher, who argues that we should learn to respect the intense feelings of people who get romantically rejected. According to Fisher, a better understanding of how the brain processes love and romantic desire can help us find the right partner and sustain a meaningful, healthy relationship. Of the 294 episodes I've published, I have to say this one feels like magic. BIG Magic. From the circumstances of how I met Elizabeth Gilbert, to the significance of the day we recorded the interview, it all felt magical. And I haven't stopped thinking about this conversation since.    Just to give you a hint at how talented and brilliant she is, Eat, Pray, Love sold over 12 million copies and held the #1 spot on the NYT best seller list for over 6 months. If that isn't impressive enough, Time Magazine included her on the 100 most influential people list in 2008.   Today she shares some of her experiences with writing the book that became a world-wide phenomenon, but also her recovery from sex and love addiction, and her experience with the 12 steps.    Just a heads up, we did have some technical issues about half way through but it's not too bad.    I am so deeply honored to have her as a guest today. Ep 345 total of 345, season 3: Why Boundaries Matter in Sex and Love with Heather Claus aka Nookie. She is a coach, author, and educator. She just released a book (Take No Shit) about how to create better relationships with others and yourself. And yup, it involves boundaries! We discussed sexual and emotional boundaries and the importance of knowing your personal boundaries to protect yourself (and this includes potentially protecting yourself from abuse). We talked about our sexuality and who owns it? Do you own your own sexuality? Or is another enforcing unwanted boundaries on you? Or is it the media, society, or culture that influences you rather than a person enforcing boundaries on you?  We also talked about the shame and guilt that often surrounds sex in the United States (and other parts of the world too, of course). She pointed out that one of the best ways to manipulate people is to try inducing guilt and shame in them. She shared that she doesn't compromise herself in relationships, there might be negotiation, but she doesn't necessarily mean compromise, and how this created lots of backlash and anger when she declared it on social media one time, which is quite interesting.  She created a website and app for Dating Kinky (for kink, love, sex, and those seeking alternative lifestyles) and curiouser.life (which is more mainstream).Connect with Heather, aka Miss Nookie, a longtime writer/educator in the world of love, sex, romance, and kink, and the founder of Dating Kinky/Curiouser, a website dedicated to fostering connections among its user and providing education.: https://my.curiouser.life/ http://datingkinky.com/https://twitter.com/DatingKinkyFirst published on PodNation TV, then YouTube https://youtu.be/mSASIsK5sNg?si=cbVmJ94eiVwLoEu-RUAN'S most recent BOOKS/AUDIOBOOKS:Neighborhood Sex Secrets:(affiliate links, podcast may receive a small commission on sales):https://books.ruanwillowauthor.com/neighborhoodsexsecretsNEW RELEASE AUDIOBOOK! Do you feel like everyone is getting laid but you? Or like if you just knew how to do that thing, you would be able to keep your partner engaged in hot and sexy time? Maybe your partner can't seem to keep their hands off of you but you secretly find this exhausting or even overwhelming…Well, your secret is safe with me but I must remind you that navigating how we approach the expression of our sexual energy is a journey that is unique to every individual. Regardless of how society may make it seem, there is no universal blueprint (surprise!). One thing is for sure though, it's nearly impossible to get in the mood, let alone stay in the mood when we are constantly on different pages with our partners because of mismatched desires around sensuality and expressions of sexuality. In today's episode, I invite you and your sweetie to reconnect by celebrating National Bowling Day and National Book Lovers Day. I go on to unpack the complicated topic of Sensuality as the third side of the Passion Triangle as I continue to answer your most frequently asked love and sex questions. Find out how you can rediscover the sacred delight of basking in your own magnetic Sensuality and listen in to hear my answers to Deandra and Dr. T's questions: "I have a high sex drive that often leaves me disappointed because of my husband's avoidance of sex and erection difficulty - What do I do?" and "How do I work through my ambivalent feelings around sex with my husband because of sexual trauma from a past relationship?" We often hear lots of couples talk about the whirlwind passionate romance that led them to commit to one another for the long haul and for some, go as far as getting the government involved. But how often do we hear about the kind of love that had to be grown over time? Like the ones that never experienced what Beyoncè is always on about with being crazy in love…You know, the kind of love story that may not be very romantic and exciting to some people but it works and therefore is just as valid as any. I mean, who says a slow burn can't still be hot and spicy anyway? Whether your partnership is a classic friends-to-lovers dynamic that's a little more friends than it is lovers, an arranged marriage on behalf of your culture, or simply the product of finding someone you liked and trusted enough to make your nuclear family dream come true in a timely fashion, you deserve to know that you are not alone. In today's episode, I invite you to reconnect with your partners in celebration of National White Wine Day and National Water Balloon Day. I review the three aspects of the Passion Triangle, which we discussed in depth in episodes 9 through 12 and I also continue to focus on your top love and sex questions. Tune in for my answer to our Anonymous sender's question: What about long-term couples that weren't in love at the beginning of their relationship? In This Episode, You Will Learn: I dive deeper into the Passion Triangle during my signature immersion program coming out in mid-October (1:38) I challenge you this Thursday, August 3rd to share, with your sweetheart, a nice glass of wine on National White Wine Day (5:33) I challenge you this Friday, August 4th to get silly with your partner on National Water Balloon Day (6:34) A review of the Passion Triangle (8:06) My answer for the Anonymous questioner: What about long-term couples that weren't in love at the beginning of their relationship? If you're like me, your most sarcastic remarks were never made with the intention to cause harm. You're simply a linguist with an eye for irony and a secret belief you should really be a comedian, right? Well, although that could very well be the case… Do you know the line between comedy and cruelty? It's important we remember that wielding the sword of sarcasm requires dexterity, spacial awareness, and most of all, care. We don't want to accidentally cut someone because we were playing fast and loose with our words…But as perfectly imperfect beings, we have a tendency to do this all the time, especially with our partners.Would you talk to your most treasured friend the way you talk to your partner? Would you be so quick to criticize your friends the way you might criticize your partner? When we start speaking to our spouse the way we would a dear friend, we find out how important platonic intimacy is to sustaining a thriving connection. In today's episode of Sex, Love, and Elephants, I invite you and your beloved to reconnect by celebrating National Refreshment Day and National Friendship Day. I am also beyond excited to be answering the first of your most burning and frequently asked questions. Are drinking games for lovers or losers? Does alcohol make sex better and wetter or dryer and dimmer?  A study by Kathryn Lakeland of Femfresh found that 75 per cent of women said they liked to drink before getting into bed with their husband or boyfriend. In this episode we ask those in the 75 per cent to examine if this is a powerful or limiting decision. Many share that alcohol makes them feel confident, flirty and powerful, but also less aware, less excited and more prone to regrettable decisions.  My guest on this episode, ‘Drinking Games' Author,  Sarah Levy once described being drunk on dates as a mandatory activity that made her feel like she had warm honey in her veins. Now, she is 5 years sober and ready to tell the world why.  In this episode, I am also joined by licensed therapist Erica Lubetkin who specializes in anxiety and addiction. Erica breaks down how alcohol can momentarily spike dopamine in your system, but the lasting effects are not so good.  This podcast is intended to spark hard-to-have conversations in your romantic and sexual life that lead to powerful shifts. I genuinely believe this episode delivers on that promise because we are talking about some powerful shit - alcohol.  Thanks to the sponsor of this episode, Better Help!  Visit http://Betterhelp.com/lovers for 10% off your first month.  http://Betterhelp.com/LOVERS Follow Shan:  http://instagram.com/shanboody http://tiktok.com/shanboody https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSE2Lr9RfYXiFtiX1jk5qng loversfriendspodcast@gmail.com Follow Sarah:  https://www.instagram.com/sarahllevy https://www.tiktok.com/@sarahllevy https://www.sarahllevy.com/ Follow Erica:  https://ericalubetkin.com/ https://www.instagram.com/erica.lubetkin

Relationships are hard for everyone, but they can be especially hard when you're living with a mental health issue such as depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Psychological struggles can heighten the anxiety around sex, dating, and intimacy in ways that can make relationships feel inherently unsatisfying, even hopeless. But there is hope! Today, we're going to explore how mental health issues can pose unique relationship challenges, but also consider practical tips and tools for overcoming them. I am joined by Allison Raskin, a mental health advocate and New York Times bestselling author. Her latest book is titled: Over-Thinking About You: Navigating Romantic Relationships When You Have Anxiety, OCD, and/or Depression. Some of the topics that we explore include: How do you even bring up the subject of mental health with someone you're dating or in a relationship with? How can you tell whether something you're worried about is a valid relationship concern vs. a symptom of your disorder? How do you take care of both your mental health and your relationship at the same time when some mental health treatments carry sexual side effects? How can you learn to be "in the moment" during sex and block out distracting thoughts? How can you make online dating less anxiety-inducing? How can you handle breakup in healthier ways? How can you be a supportive partner to someone who has mental health struggles? To learn more about Allison, visit allisonraskin.com.
