After a wild few days, Sens. Shemia Fagan and Kim Thatcher have emerged as the Democatic and Republican candidates for secretary of state, Oregon’s second-highest office. A member of the #Oregon11, Senator Kim Thatcher experienced the nuttiest legislative session she’s ever seen in Salem. The story of the Republican walkout made national news as the Senators left the state in response to threats of arrest by Governor Kate Brown. She participated in two Republican walkouts to deny quorum so that no bills could be passed, in an attempt to get the Democrats to stop abusing their power. We talk about the walkouts, how they successfully killed several bad bills, and what to expect in the next legislative session. We also talk about two huge new grassroots movements that were spawned by bad legislation – the Slavic Activation movement to get more Eastern Europeans and Russians involved in the electoral process, and the Timber Unity movement that rose up to oppose cap and trade legislation. Each of these movements has the potential to bring thousands of new voters into Oregon politics where they have never previously participated. ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause Text of article: (FEBRUARY 16, 2019) We change our clocks every spring. We move them one hour forward. We call this daylight saving time. It begins March 10. We move them one hour backward in the fall. This is called standard time. Many countries in the world change their clocks. Most of the United States does this. Only Arizona and Hawaii do not. Some lawmakers in Oregon want our state to stop using daylight saving time. Kim Thatcher is a state senator. Bill Post is a state representative. They are both from Keizer. They work in the state government in Salem. Thatcher and Post are introducing a new law. They want Oregon to stop using daylight saving time. They want the state to stay on daylight saving time beginning November 7, 2021. This is the process: First, the state senators and representatives have to agree. Then the voters of Oregon must approve the change. Finally, the U.S. Congress in Washington, DC must also approve. Some people use an old phrase to remember what to do: Spring forward; fall back. Kim Thatcher is an American politician. She is currently a Republican state senator from Oregon's Senate District 13, having won election in 2014. Prior to becoming a senator, she was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives from House District 25. Thatcher was first elected to the Oregon House District 25 in 2004, representing the Keizer area. Early in her career, as the owner of the highway construction firm KT Contracting, she was well known as a critic of the Oregon Department of Transportation.In May 2005, Thatcher successfully sponsored a bill to limit public access to information about concealed handgun license. She was reelected in 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2012. In 2014, Thatcher chose to run for Oregon State Senate Seat 13, held by the retiring Larry George, rather than seek reelection to her house seat.
