Transcript:Hello, this is Pastor Don of Christ Redeemer Church. Welcome to The Kingdom Perspective.Have you ever noticed the tendency of your soul to swing from prideful delight to hopeless despair and then back to pride and then back to despair, and so forth. I don't think I am alone in this. Whenever we feel like we are measuring up to some standard of moral or social performance, we swell with pride. Then often in the very next moment, we are hit with a glimpse of our failure, and “boom”, we swing to the opposite pole of despair.How are we ever to have stability when we are so easily swayed by our own prideful insecurity and problematic self-assessment?The great 17th century French thinker and mathematician Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) directs us to the person of Jesus Christ. In Jesus we can look at ourselves honestly, because Jesus accepts us as sinners. He welcomes us not in our virtue but in our misery. Listen to how Pascal puts it:“The man who knows God but does not know his own misery, becomes proud. The man who knows his own misery but does not know God, ends in despair.... Knowing Jesus Christ strikes the balance because in him we find both God and our own misery. Jesus Christ is therefore a God whom we approach without pride, and before whom we humble ourselves without despair.”Blaise Pascal reminds us that Jesus is unlike any other god. Jesus knows us through and through, and he loved us in spite of it. He loved us while we were at our worst, while we were yet sinners. Therefore, living before His eyes frees us to look at ourselves honestly, neither cocky nor crushed.Something to think about from The Kingdom Perspective.Romans 3 (NIV)19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Prophet. Priest. King.Somewhere in the 1990s, I was introduced to Christ's “triple office.” Providentially, it was not a pastor or a theologian (John Calvin made much of Christ's triple office) who told me that Christ was and is a prophet, priest, and king. Rather, it was by a Christian rock band, whose ministry continues today. That band was and is The Smalltown Poets. In their song, by the same title, they lamented the fact that the presidents and potentates of this world gave them little interest. As with most of us, the children of God do not text with tycoons or golf with governors. But what we lack with the world, we recover in the Word Incarnate. As the Smalltown Poets sang, “My closet's a shrine to an old friend of mine, here I talk all the time with a prophet priest.” And again, when “misperceived by some head of state, hey, that's great.” Why?'Cause I talk to a prophet who tells me the truthAnd I dine with a king at my home in Duluth [GA]Better yet I'm in touch with a much needed friendWho hears my confessions and pardons my sin. Indeed, what a wonderful comfort that Christ is our prophet, priest, and king. And this Sunday, we will see Jesus in all of his prophetic, priestly, and royal glory. In John 12:12–36, Jesus comes to Jerusalem as a king, but instead of reigning, he prophesies that he will offer the final sacrifice. Marvelously, he is the long expected prophet, priest, and king. This Sunday, we will consider each of those offices and how Jesus fulfills them all. To prepare for Sunday, take time to read John 12. Pray that God would magnify Christ in our our midst, and that as he is lifted up, we would be drawn to him. As the Lord allows, I look forward to seeing you Sunday and worshiping our prophet, priest, and king. January 30, 2022 - God is a God Who reveals Himself to His people that His people can truly know Him. In the Old Testament, one of the ways God would reveal Himself to His people was to give them a name by which they could know Him and His nature more clearly. Today, in the Gospel reading of St. Matthew 8, we have the testimony of the healing of the leper and the healing of the centurion's servant. One of the names by which God revealed Himself to His people was Jehovah Rophe, which means the Lord your healer. Do we know Jesus Christ as our healer; as the One Who's nature is to heal? Today we look at the leper and the centurion to see Christ our healer clearly and how He invites us to come to Him that He would make us whole again.

It is a personal stand, one that is verbalized the same way many people in the Bible proclaimed. "As for me..." Over the past 20 or more years the church has become weak and anemic. New generations emerged out of the YouTube theological "every wind of doctrine" era. Dark days are ahead of us, and the time to KNOW Jesus Christ is NOW. And not through a third party, but for themselves. Every kind of intellectual ascent has slowly replaced knowing Jesus and our Father in Heaven personally through the Holy Spirit. However, soon that mental furniture is going to prove to be a "broken tooth or a foot out of joint." It is in the KNOWING Jesus Christ one on one. KNOWING His voice and claiming the Cross. To the intent that no matter what, in the hardest situations and circumstances, you will be able to say, "As for me...." You may find yourself alone in that resolution, but you will never be alone. Jesus Christ "stands on the right hand of the poor to save them." It is time to KNOW Jesus. Use your time wisely, and make sure you are on HIS path, and not find out you have been on another path that leads to destruction. How sad that only at the end of one’s life they will have to accept the truth that “good deeds” alone will not get you into heaven! Knowing Jesus Christ as your Lord and Your Savior does! Does Jesus even know you? 1 Corinthians 8:3; John 10:14; 27 Has He touched you in such a way that like the Apostle Paul, everything you had or owned is worthless compared to knowing Him and walking with Him? Philippians 3:7-10 Has Jesus captured your heart? 2 Timothy 1:7 You are called to great works when you are known by Jesus! John 14:12-14; Romans 8:9-11 When you are known by Jesus, and Christ loves through you, you love others differently than ever before. 1 John 4:18-19; Ephesians 3:18-19 When you are known by Jesus, you are self-disciplined. 1 Corinthians 13:11; 1 Corinthians 9:25-27 Do you possess the power? Do you possess the love? Do you possess the self-discipline that comes from knowing Christ and being known by Him? Jesus wants to know you! He is knocking at the door of your heart daily! Revelation 3:20 Will you open the door for Jesus, today? Will you live out 1 John 5:20 Are we going through this life putting together a resume when we can have the ultimate referral? How does one go from walking in stride with Jesus to going back to the old ways? Philippians 4:9 Why would you leave this place the same way you came in? Can I encourage you today? To open the door that Jesus is knocking on! Respond to His voice! Will you partake of the fellowship that can only be had by repenting of your sins and confessing Jesus as your Lord and Savior? Will you walk out of here today professing that you know Jesus and Jesus knows you?

John 17:3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. Eternal life is knowing Jesus. Do you know Jesus Christ? Do you want to know him better? Jesus said, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. “ We see God the Father in Jesus. When Paul prayed for other Christians he prayed “that you may know HIM better.” (Eph 1:17) Paul revealed his personal desire when he wrote “I want to know Christ.” (Phil 3:10) and said everything was garbage and dung compared to knowing Jesus Christ. At another time he prayed that Christians “may have power… to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:18-19) Imagine praying that and having that prayer answered? Christians want to be saved, we want eternal life, we want to go to heaven when they die, but how many of us want to know Jesus? I am a sinner in the area of not giving enough loving attention to my wife and children. How much more a sinner am I that I give little loving attention to my Lord and Christ? We will see Jesus fully when he returns. Eternal life does begin now. Knowing Jesus in our lives in this age and this world. Let us seek to know HIM. We may seek Him in the gathering of the Church. We sing his praises and know him better, we hear the word preached and we know him better, we discern him in the bread and wine and know him better. We may seek him DAILY in private prayer and meditation on the word of God and fasting. Knowing Jesus Christ is knowing him as he is revealed to us in the Scriptures. We must hear Scripture to see Jesus. Knowing Jesus Christ is the work of the Holy Spirit in the heart. The Holy Spirit illuminates Jesus for us, brings his face out of the shadows so we can see him. 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

My hope for us above everything else is that we’ll have a vibrant, dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ. Individually and corporately that we’ll be caught up in loving and pursuing Him. We talked about how easy it is to miss a relationship with Christ in the parable of the Prodigal son. We can miss relationship with Christ like the younger son in his sin, he wandered away from the father. Or like the older son in his self righteousness and judgmental attitude, he was with the father, but missed the whole idea of relationship. We want to embrace the Father, relying only on His grace. We’ve talked about how to be in relationship with God is through being in the Scriptures, but that too often, we don’t want to be. So we confess to God our brokenness and ask for His help. We talked about how important prayer is in our relationship with God, but that too often we don’t pray consistently and we don’t pray for the most significant things. So we ask God for help to pray according to His will and His purposes. Philippians 3:1-3 Judaizers tried to force gentile converts to Christianity to be circumcised, but Paul taught that salvation does not come through trying to follow the law, but only by faith in Jesus Christ. He once had confidence in his ability to follow the law to gain favor with God, but now had no confidence in the flesh to save. Philippians 3:4-6 Paul’s old confidence Philippians 3:7-9 He didn’t just consider knowing Christ better than his legalistic righteousness, but that everything but knowing Christ is loss. Paul had an advantage that you and I never had. He met Christ 25 years before. He had given up his old life, and now lived to preach Christ’s gospel. How can it be that his primary goal in life is still to know Christ? He knew Christ’s salvation, but wanted to know Him even more as His Lord. It was not that Paul had a one-time meeting with Jesus that he looked back on all the time. He had a desire for a greater and greater relationship with Jesus. He wanted to know Jesus more and more. That was his primary goal in life, above everything else. For the sake of Christ…. Knowing Christ….gain Christ….be found in him. These show Paul’s purpose and goal in life was to know Christ and his desire to be united with Christ. Philippians 3:10-12 “know” is to “know by experience” Paul already knew Jesus as savior, but wanted to know him more intimately as Lord. “Power of his resurrection” – the power that brought Christ back from the dead now operates in believers. This is the “power” to overcome resistance – maybe resistance in us and the world. “Fellowship of His sufferings” – suffering for the sake of righteousness and God’s purpose. “Becoming like him” – As Christ died for sin, so a believer has died to sin. We should exhibit that cutting off from our former sinful ways by daily being set apart from sin and living a new life by means of Christ’s power in us. Knowing Jesus Christ was Paul’s primary goal in life. It was not enough to look back at an event in his life. He wanted to progressively, continually know Jesus more, be united with Him more, and follow Him more intimately. Let’s pray for Greater desire for the Lord. Greater obedience to the Lord.
