When Luther's daughter, Jane Lockwood, was just 5 years old, she was diagnosed with a rare and incurable form of muscular dystrophy. Luther and his family resolved to do something about it. During the two decades since, they founded the McColl-Lockwood Laboratory and dedicated enormous resources to creating more effective treatments for the disease to help not only Jane, but thousands of others like her. In this episode, Luther and Jane share their experience. Jane describes what it's been like to live with the disease – and how it hasn't stopped her from achieving her dream of enrolling in law school. Meanwhile, Luther gives insight to their global search for the best minds researching muscular dystrophy, and how that may be leading to new and effective treatments. We're joined in this conversation by Frank's friend Larry Powell. Larry has been an inspiration for and informal advisor to our podcast for a long time. He suggested that we feature Luther and Jane's story, and we liked the idea so much we asked him to be a part of it. Rivka and Frank are joined by award-winning infini-hyphenate artist Larry Powell (they/them) to discuss Steven Spielberg's 1991 classic Hook. Beloved by many, this live-action Peter Pan story starring Robin Williams doubles as a critique of capitalism's impact on family structure, reminding us of the importance of reconnecting with our inner child and radical imagination. The group also delves into the colonial nature of Neverland and its gender politics. Powell House of Arts PASSION
It's not until I think about music being played that I realize I barely know the names of the major instruments. Luckily my expert today has a lot of experience and passion as a professional musician. My guest today is Larry Powell. Larry has been playing the Trumpet for over 40 years now; performing everywhere from an Orchesta to a Circus, from Entertaining on a Cruise Ship to Teaching in a Classroom. Larry's here today to talk a bit about the different types of musicians and what it takes to get really good! ( Www.StudioHFL.Com ) Also another big thank you to all of you listening out there! I played at Southwind Golf Course on Tuesday at the invite of Larry Powell and his son Eric who lives there. It was amazing. Everywhere on the course was the aftermath of the biggest sporting event in Memphis. Just Sunday afternoon I sat and watched (along with the rest of the whole golfing world) the best golfers in the world compete for millions of dollars in prize money. I have played at Southwind before; it is a breathtaking golf course and, oh my, it is hard. It is doubly hard when you are playing in a heat index of almost 110 degrees! But watching on TV does not do justice to what you see when you are actually on the grounds before or after the event. Southwind goes from being a beautiful golf course to being a spectacle. For two months, crews work tirelessly setting up tents everywhere (they are mostly air conditioned now). The planning and coordination that goes into hosting one of the biggest golfing events in the world is mind boggling. Why? Glory is coming to town. Golfing glory, that is—the elite of the elite—and believe you me, Memphis prepared the way! In Isaiah we are talking about something similar, Prepare the Way. For two weeks, Isaiah has said something huge is coming, something so huge mountains will be leveled. On Sunday we see what is coming, or Who is coming, and it's no wonder the passage starts off with "Fear not!” This something doesn't crush golf balls, He crushes whole nations and anyone in his path! And while we might not be surprised that God would have the power to do that, what is surprising to us is that this One who is coming, who is terrifying, is somehow for us and is called a Shepherd. It is breathtaking, actually. I can't wait to talk about it with you on Sunday. So join us, live and in person or via live stream, as we Behold Our God. Blessings, Jim

I got a text from Clint Baker last Monday. It said, “sketch from yesterday's sermon.” Attached was an image that so captured my sermon, I was blown away. It literally healed my heart as I pondered it with wonder. I shared it with a lot of people this week. (I will share it with you this Sunday.) One of the guys I shared it with was Larry Powell. Larry and I were meeting to talk about our Community Groups, and I told him, “Hey, look what I got from Clint Baker. He drew this on Sunday while I was preaching.” He looked at it and, after a minute, said, “Wow, he obviously wasn't listening!” It was said in jest, of course, and we had a good laugh. Then I thought of our text, and it struck me that the Pharisees had a similar reaction to the great art of Jesus, sculpted in the flesh of a man born blind. What they witnessed was an unspeakable glory, an unfathomable wonder—a man reduced to suffering and begging because of a congenital defect is now whole, and their reaction is, “The guy who did this is obviously a sinner for breaking the Sabbath.” In our text this week, the blind see and the seeing are blind. Those who have light are in darkness, and one who is in darkness sees the light. Those who know a lot about God don't really know him, and one who just meets God knows him intimately. Irony upon irony, so on this Palm Sunday we will look at Jesus' sixth sign in the gospel of John. Jesus is the Light of the world, and yet some see and some do not. Why?
