Celebrating Hispanic Heritage - UIndy hosts Hispanic art exhibit

A vibrant mosaic of culture and heritage is coming to life at the University of Indianapolis. It's the art exhibit “To The Roots, Embracing Heritage.”The exhibition uses diverse artistic mediums to showcase the resilience and beauty of cultural roots, which is especially meaningful at the University of Indianapolis, where students note the relatively small Hispanic population.Imelda Pozos, a UIndy undergraduate student, said, “The artwork doesn't solely represent Hispanic and Latino culture, but mostly, it is made by Hispanic and Latino individuals. We have people who originate from Cuba, Colombia, and Mexico. The artists from those decades are showing their artwork here.”The UIndy exhibition provides a platform for students to see their heritage represented and appreciated.Leslie Samperio, a UIndy graduate student, said, “I know that there are sometimes stereotypes within our culture that we can't be sure of because of how we look or how we might be or come about. However, as you can see with this art gallery, many students have succeeded in doing something out of the ordinary.”A standout feature is an interactive map that encourages students to explore the diverse origins of their peers, faculty, and community members, which extend far beyond Mexico.CariAnn Freed, director of institutional being at UIndy, said, “One thing that I wanted to emphasize in this gallery is the experience of English-language learners and having an opportunity to work with our students, and all of the art descriptions are translated.”“Hasta Las Raices: To The Roots” offers a unique opportunity to experience a space of reflection, dialogue, and appreciation of our community's diverse backgrounds.Samperio said, “I think we should do a whole Hispanic-oriented art gallery just because it is such a big space, and it is important to show students that there is an area they can come to outside the whole campus that is just for them.”Through December, visitors are invited to explore the diverse and vibrant heritage that defines the Hispanic experience, strength, and identity.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The second hour of The Sports Rush today sees Brett joined by the one and only Kent Sterling! Kent is a media mogul covering many of the sports around the state of Indiana and you can always find him at KentSterling.com! Brett and Kent start off their discussion today by discussing the Indiana Hoosiers game over the past weekend that saw IU actually compete against a very strong Penn State team, only to be coached into complacency and a loss by Tom Allen going for a field goal to tie in the fourth quarter. Brett and Kent discuss how that play calling exposes a lot of the major issues with Tom Allen's coaching, and the two also discuss just how hot Allen's seat should be right now, even with the large buyout price. After football, the two discuss the Hoosiers Men's Basketball team and some issues that Brett saw in the first half of their scrimmage against UIndy. Brett wants to know if Kent thinks that the Hoosiers Basketball team needs to be “humbled” a bit before competing this season in the Big Ten. Brett is then sure to grab Kent's thoughts on the Connor Stalions situation at Michigan, with him possibly being seen in disguise on the Central Michigan football sideline. How big of a deal is this situation going to snowball in Kent's mind? Plus, a little extra college football ranking talk with Kent before he signs off! Also in the second hour, Brett previews tonight's exhibition match between Grace College and the Purdue Boilermakers in Men's Basketball, and also talks about the Colts current roster woes and lack of depth. Welcome to the Often Daunted. After a slow start the Hoosiers down the U Indy Greyhounds 74-52, let's talk about it. Takeaways from the game: Credit to the IU Sports Media program and Zion Brown in particular, Gabe Cupps and Anthony Walker provided the intangibles that made the difference in getting this squad rolling, a little selfishness may go a long way in finding a shooting option on this team, Mgbako showed enough for us fans to get really excited for what his season may have in store, Kel'el Ware's 14 point performance, Trey Galloway needed to show more but I'm willing to bet he can show he's added dimensions to his game, Showalter Fish of the Game. Indiana news: Congrats to the IU Men's Soccer team, Kaleb Banks should be back for Marion, Indiana Recruiting news, Big Ten News: Some Exhibition results around the conference, Kasai Tominaga injured in first half of the season, Michigan with the surprising (definitely not regulation) win over Marquette, Illinois humbles Hunter Dickinson, Hoosier History Hit: Richard Dorson.
