Bside Incoming: Alinka For our 186th show we take a trip over the Atlantic ocean to Chicago and warmly invite Alinka to showcase some of her favoruite club equipt house and tech records. "There are at least a few people in this thing determined to keep House Music weird. Chicago's Alinka is one of them." – Terry Matthew, 5 Magazine. Alinka is the kind of DJ other DJs will tell you about. She has a unique power on the decks that comes from lifelong passion and time served, with a focused devotion to her first love – house music. Raised on Chicago's vibrant house sound with toes dipped into Detroit techno, Europe's more robust approaches to bass music and the myriad of genres coming from cities like Berlin, London, and Paris. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Moving to Chicago in the late 80's, she fell head over heels for the chart sounds of Madonna and Janet Jackson. Then came house music from local radio shows where you could frequently hear tracks by Chicago legends like Cajmere and DJ Funk, and shows like Sonic Boom helped expose underground music to the masses. By the late ‘90s, music had taken over her life. Teenage Alinka immersed herself in the dance music scene, spending her summers pulling double shifts at a local pool and moonlighting for rave promoters to build up enough cash to buy decks. After a year of skipping class to relentlessly practice her mixing skills, she began her full-time musical pursuit. Working for various club promoters, doing odd jobs passing out flyers and helping with party logistics - anything just to get into clubs underage to see her favorite DJs - all while spending hours digging for tracks at Chicago's legendary record shop Gramaphone. In 2001, Justin Long recruited her to be the opening resident for his Dotbleep party at Smartbar where she honed her skills for the best part of a decade. In 2012, an impromptu meeting with former Hercules and Love Affair vocalist, Shaun J. Wright, changed her life forever. Their evolving friendship resulted in what would be the first of many musical collaborations. The pair launched their Twirl parties and label, continually striving to inspire each other both musically and spiritually; the result has been an impressive catalog of material for both of them collaboratively and individually on the likes of The Classic Music Company, Jackathon Jams, Crosstown Rebels, Leftroom, and of course Twirl, where as well as their own material the duo have welcomed renowned artists like Spencer Parker, Virginia, LA-4A, Kim Ann Foxman, and Jason Kendig onto the label. Recent years have seen Alinka really hit her stride as a producer with successful releases on world-renowned labels like Rekids, Crosstown Rebels, Need Want, Permanent Vacation, Harry Romero's Bambossa Records, He.She.They, and Peggy Gou's Gudu Records, which is forthcoming in 2024. She also turned out a standout collection of remixes for labels Me Me Me, Live At Robert Johnson, Lone Romantic, Keinemusik, Get Physical, and Pets Recordings. Now living in Berlin, Alinka has well and truly found her feet and inspiration. Alinka has used this base to throw down at parties across Europe from Berghain/Panorama Bar to Circoloco, with regular visits back to the US and Kyiv to play at stand out bars. Her evolution continues with the recent relaunch of her Twirl imprint, highlighted by the ‘Day Dreamer', ‘Sorry For Not Trending' and ‘Edgewater' EPs that finely balance Alinka's future-focused ethos, with an unmistakable, proud passion for her Chicago heritage. Check out just released Edgewater EP here! - https://alinka.lnk.to/TWIRL032 Enjoy the ride. Huxley talks Production, Plug-ins, Right ways to reach out to Labels and more:) Huxley, born Michael Dodman, is a name you're sure to continue to hear more and more off after firmly cementing his place in the UK house scene this past two years. Raised on a diet of UK & US Garage, House and early rave music- Huxley has moulded his music into what is his can be called his own distinctive mark on house music. First appearing on the scene with sometime collaborator, Ethyl, on th...eir critically acclaimed 2009, Sassanids EP on Nick Curly's “Cecille Numbers”- as a duo they went on to release the 'Beatport Deep House 2010' nominated, Mother Tongue, on UK superpower- Tsuba. It was this that really put the duo on the map. Since this time Huxley has gone on to carve out his own solo career with releases on Tsuba, Morris Audio, Fear Of Flying and Suara, and remixes on labels such as Noir, Cecille, OFF. 2011 has seen dates at illustrious venues such as Fabric, Privilage & Le Batofar as well as dates in Ibiza, Italy, Germany of course throughout the UK. With forthcoming music on Hypercolour, Leftroom, Rebirth and his home label, Tsuba, there is a lot in store across the board of the house spectrums. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/undergroundwithnida0/message
Part of the highly regarded Kompakt family, Blond:ish have carved out their own niche thanks to their original sound and fun-loving approach to life. Better known to their parents as Anstascia D'elene and Vivie Ann Bakos, their productions have found home on labels which include Get Physical, Leftroom and Noir, and they have become a staple on the international club and festival circuit. Learning their trade at Cherry Nightclub in their then home town of Montreal (where they promoted and DJ-ed at their mid-week event called Blond:ish), it was a move to London which lead to a chance meeting with the Kompakt crew through a mutual friend. A series of releases later, in particular 'Endless Games' resonating far and wide, and the Canadians are now card holding members to one of the world's most prestigious imprints. You would be hard pressed to find a better 2015 LP debut release than their 'Welcome to the Present', an introspective musical journey into back-to-nature mysticism and spiritual groove. The release featured a host of shamanic and organic-sounding instruments, and, with its nod to philosopher Alan Watts, strongly alluded towards their holistic approach to life (and music). With our 40th podcast next up, the stars have finally aligned for the duo to deliver us a mix that was put together during some time off. ('We made it in Bali in between our yoga, meditation and spa days lol'). It even includes a fresh new production (the first track in the mix), spawned from a very recent recording session they had: 'We made it in a couple hours and just jammed along the groove track'. Featuring music from Ricardo Villalobos, Tuff City Kids, Dorisburg and more, this mix, as Blond:ish puts it, was made for times 'when you wanna get in the groooooove.' And they have absolutely nailed it.... Interview + tracklist: http://www.balancemusic.com.au/news/balance-selections-040-blondish/ Soundcloud: @blondish Facebook: www.facebook.com/blondish
Secondcity smashed his way into dance floor history with ‘I Wanna Feel', which went on to lift the No 1 spot on the UK Singles chart. Since then, he's followed up with a slew of funky bass-line charged goodies, including ‘Say It' and this year's collaborations, ‘Play It' and ‘Funk'd', the latter alongside Ibiza's fast rising star and Egg Ldn favourite Manu Gonzalez. Along the way Secondcity has notched up some incredible sets at festivals like Glastonbury, Creamfields, Snowbombing, Sonar and Hideout. No slouch, he's also rocked Ibiza with sets for ANTS at La Extrema BPM Festival and Ushuaia, Abode and Tribal Sessions at Sankeys, and guest spots at Pacha, Don't Sleep and Solid Grooves. He's also found time to take his ENd events to the US. A taster of his ENd party at Egg on Friday 9th of December, where he's joined by Leftroom boss Matt Tolfrey and Mark Fanciulli, he gave us this exclusive live mix from all earlier leg of his current tour. Why Kate Simko Took a Break From Techno to Learn Classical Composition She talks new project with the London Electronic Orchestra on a new episode of the Rave Curious podcast. After years of textured electronic production, Kate Simko's shifting gears a bit with her new project, Kate Simko & London Electronic Orchestra. The album sees the Chicago-bred, London-based DJ-producer set aside her synthesizers and compose music for an ensemble of classically trained musicians who turn what might have been techno compositions into something entirely new. And while lots of electronic producers try their hand at other genres—rock, jazz, etc.—few have the qualifications of Simko, who took an extended break from her successful career releasing dancefloor fillers for labels like Spectral Sound, Leftroom, and Get No.19 Music to studio classical composition at the esteemed London's Royal Music College. "I was at DC10, and I realized it wasn't my dream," Simko tells Rave Curious of her decision to pump the brakes on a prosperous DJ career and delve into the world of classical music. The result is both an exciting new record and a reinvigorated love of dance music. Hear her inspiring story on this episode of the Rave Curious Podcast.

DJ and producer Andrea Ferlin is one of the founders of SLEEP IS COMMERCIAL. It was in 2008 that Andrea, alongside Francesco Assenza, brought the label to life with the release of tracks as duo Dunkle Dummies and with the launch of the now legendary SLEEP IS COMMERCIAL nights. While moving to Berlin and establishing SLEEP IS COMMERCIAL represent the latest chapter in Andreas decade long career, his impressive and extensive background in electronic music have made him a familiar name on the international club circuit. Equally as prolific in the studio as playing live, in between sharing line ups with techno legends like Richie Hawtin and Marco Carola or regular guest appearances at Circoloca @DC-10 in Ibiza, Andrea found time to craft his production skills and has released his own material since 2006 on groundbreaking labels Freak n'Chic, Mindshake and Leftroom. These days, with SLEEP IS COMMERCIAL and Berlin, Andrea is part of two unique communities, one specific and the other general, both dedicated to moving electronic music ever forward. And in Berlin Andrea has really discovered and shaped his sound, producing a signature apparent in all his tracks and performances, something seeming to sway effortlessly between the beat machine and the snake charmer. Look for patterns within the over ten year career of Andrea, a strong theme emerges in his commitment to artistic collaboration. Indeed, Andrea's earliest successes were in partnership with Dusty Kid between 2002 and 2006. Together, as Duoteque, they released 5 records for the German label Boxer Sport and appeared on compilations from Minus, Systematic and Crosstown Rebels. More accolades followed for his next partnership with Matteo Spedicati. The 2007 and 2008 working with Matteo as “Clarissa Haze Duo” Andrea found an astonishingly different angle to create electronic tracks from inside his own music. Today, in many ways SLEEP IS COMMERCIAL offers Andrea the oppertunity to transform his professional attitude towards artistic collaboration into a way of life. Whether in the studio, party, or living room he shares the decks with friends, DJs, newcomers whom inspire him towards constant new projects and experiments. In 2010 he joined forces with Daniele Papini to release the “Club Mio” EP, and teamed up with new talent, Sardinian DJ Alessio Mereu releasing 3 acclaimed EPs on SLEEP IS COMMERCIAL as DUM. 2011 saw the DUM tour travel across Europe showcasing their music flavor as well as the return of some past collaborations; Dunkle Dummies and Clarissa Hazel Duo. To top off this year Andrea released his new solo project, Sunny Charles, on SLEEP IS COMMERCIAL. In 2013, toghether with his friend Donald Mezmercic he started a new project called Fedon, they released the first vinyl called Modern Mantras, and then after couple of months they released the album on CD called Modern Mantras as well. In 2014 with the remix of Ion Ludwig, Andrea released his latest EP called Almost. A new album, singles and some remixes will be coming during the year. With a career spanning well over a decade, Glimpse' unique sound has shown both his versatility and creativity as a producer. His London roots shine through in his music, constantly pushing boundaries and exploring new ground, with his imaginative blend of house and techno winning support from the likes of Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin and Damian Lazarus. With releases on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Aus Music, Leftroom, Planet E and his own imprint, Glimspe Recordings, he has consistently shown his ability as a forward-thinking producer. Recent work has seen him branch out musically as one half of popular Hotflush duo, Dense & Pika, with numerous shows worldwide and a RA podcast already under their belt. We sat down with Glimpse after his recent set here at Egg London. This set was recorded live at Egg London when you recently played here, how was it? How did you find our bespoke Flipside system? The Flipside Sound system is absolutely incredible and easily one of the best sounds systems in London. It was really great to play on. You've been producing for over a decade now. Who would you say inspired your unique sound? You go through ups and downs as a producer. Times when it feels easy and times when you feel like you don't know what your doing. My inspiration usually comes from the people around me and the music im listening to at the time. You have a love for analogue equipment in the studio and the Jupiter and 909 sounds are present on a lot of your productions. Have you had a play with the new Roland digital series yet? The TB-3 and TR-8 units are causing quite a stir at the moment with people digging the additional live / jamming capabilities. I haven't had a chance to play on the new Roland kit but am interested to have a go for sure. You've released on some heavyweight labels including Aus Music, Hypercolour, Planet E and more. How did the opportunity on Carl Craig's Planet E come about? A friend of mine Dean Mushin sent him one of my demos and he signed it. So you're one half of Dense & Pika. How did this project come about and how do you differentiate this sound to your solo work? Me and Alex have been writing music of and on for 10 years now and it seemed like a logical step for both of us as our musical interests are very much aligned. Your own imprint Glimpse Recordings is coming up to it's 10th Anniversary. What was your thinking behind starting the label? Was it used as an output for material that other labels weren't signing at the time? I've never liked sending my music to other labels maybe scared of rejection. This way I could release my music exactly how and when I wanted. We did the same with dense & pika at the beginning. Just put out a series of 12s and waited to see how they went. This way there is no hype and no bullshit. If the music isn't good enough it won't work. But if it does you know you have something solid and no one can control that apart from you. Have you got any release news, both personally and for the label? Release wise I have a Glimpse EP coming out on Aus in a April, a dense & pike EP out in March on Hotflush and a dense & pika remix of Paul Woolfords 'Erotic Discourse' out in March as well. And finally, anything you'd like to shout about? Kris Wadsworth & Luke Viberts albums on Hypercolour are ridiculously good and worth buying on vinyl.

Huxley, born Michael Dodman, is a name you're sure to continue to hear more and more off after firmly cementing his place in the UK house scene this past two years. Raised on a diet of UK & US Garage, House and early rave music- Huxley has moulded his music into what is his can be called his own distinctive mark on house music. First appearing on the scene with sometime collaborator, Ethyl, on their critically acclaimed 2009, Sassanids EP on Nick Curly's “Cecille Numbers”- as a duo they went on to release the 'Beatport Deep House 2010' nominated, Mother Tongue, on UK superpower- Tsuba.
For Disconnected Podcast 006 we bring you Matthew Burton.. A UK producer and DJ originally from Nottingham who has released on labels including Ultra Stretch, Leftroom, Retrofit and Shrink.
Her debut track 'Intentions' spent the summer being regularly unleashed on DC10 crowds by the likes of Seth Troxler, Shaun Reeves and Ryan Crosson. The Leeds based producer's first foray into production was released on Matt Tolfrey's Left'd label in September and a follow up release is set to drop on Left’d’s vinyl big brother Leftroom later in the Autumn. With such an esteemed start in production it’s no surprise then that Laura’s first proper excursions behind a DJ booth were for influential underground nights, Mulletover and Below. "It's a real pleasure being asked to put a mix together for one of Bristol's finest club nights. I've tried to create a snapshot of the musical influences and sounds that I'm really loving out there at the moment. There's a mixture of old and new, a couple of old favourites of mine as well as a couple of upcoming unreleased tracks of some REALLY cool up and coming artists. There's also a couple of mine thrown in there for good measure including my new track 'Love In Me' coming out on Leftroom next month. The aim of the game is to make you boogie and smile. Hope it does just that. Big love"
