Bside Incoming: Alinka For our 186th show we take a trip over the Atlantic ocean to Chicago and warmly invite Alinka to showcase some of her favoruite club equipt house and tech records. "There are at least a few people in this thing determined to keep House Music weird. Chicago's Alinka is one of them." – Terry Matthew, 5 Magazine. Alinka is the kind of DJ other DJs will tell you about. She has a unique power on the decks that comes from lifelong passion and time served, with a focused devotion to her first love – house music. Raised on Chicago's vibrant house sound with toes dipped into Detroit techno, Europe's more robust approaches to bass music and the myriad of genres coming from cities like Berlin, London, and Paris. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Moving to Chicago in the late 80's, she fell head over heels for the chart sounds of Madonna and Janet Jackson. Then came house music from local radio shows where you could frequently hear tracks by Chicago legends like Cajmere and DJ Funk, and shows like Sonic Boom helped expose underground music to the masses. By the late ‘90s, music had taken over her life. Teenage Alinka immersed herself in the dance music scene, spending her summers pulling double shifts at a local pool and moonlighting for rave promoters to build up enough cash to buy decks. After a year of skipping class to relentlessly practice her mixing skills, she began her full-time musical pursuit. Working for various club promoters, doing odd jobs passing out flyers and helping with party logistics - anything just to get into clubs underage to see her favorite DJs - all while spending hours digging for tracks at Chicago's legendary record shop Gramaphone. In 2001, Justin Long recruited her to be the opening resident for his Dotbleep party at Smartbar where she honed her skills for the best part of a decade. In 2012, an impromptu meeting with former Hercules and Love Affair vocalist, Shaun J. Wright, changed her life forever. Their evolving friendship resulted in what would be the first of many musical collaborations. The pair launched their Twirl parties and label, continually striving to inspire each other both musically and spiritually; the result has been an impressive catalog of material for both of them collaboratively and individually on the likes of The Classic Music Company, Jackathon Jams, Crosstown Rebels, Leftroom, and of course Twirl, where as well as their own material the duo have welcomed renowned artists like Spencer Parker, Virginia, LA-4A, Kim Ann Foxman, and Jason Kendig onto the label. Recent years have seen Alinka really hit her stride as a producer with successful releases on world-renowned labels like Rekids, Crosstown Rebels, Need Want, Permanent Vacation, Harry Romero's Bambossa Records, He.She.They, and Peggy Gou's Gudu Records, which is forthcoming in 2024. She also turned out a standout collection of remixes for labels Me Me Me, Live At Robert Johnson, Lone Romantic, Keinemusik, Get Physical, and Pets Recordings. Now living in Berlin, Alinka has well and truly found her feet and inspiration. Alinka has used this base to throw down at parties across Europe from Berghain/Panorama Bar to Circoloco, with regular visits back to the US and Kyiv to play at stand out bars. Her evolution continues with the recent relaunch of her Twirl imprint, highlighted by the ‘Day Dreamer', ‘Sorry For Not Trending' and ‘Edgewater' EPs that finely balance Alinka's future-focused ethos, with an unmistakable, proud passion for her Chicago heritage. Check out just released Edgewater EP here! - https://alinka.lnk.to/TWIRL032 Enjoy the ride. Alinka is an official member of the Forbes Business Council and her cutting-edge book creation process has been featured in Entrepreneur magazine. In this episode, Jordan and Alinka discuss: An unhappy journey leads to an unhappy ending Finding a bookshelf for your book Two reasons why you should write a book Choosing a cover for your book Key Takeaways An unhappy journey doesn't lead to a happy ending. If you find yourself feeling like pieces of yourself are dying out, then maybe it's time to look outside the box that you're in and find alternatives to your current circumstance. The first step to publishing a best-seller is to go to a bookstore and find a bookshelf where your idea for a book would belong. Then, ask yourself how your book will stand out among others. If a bookshelf doesn't exist for your book, that means there's not enough readership. There are two good reasons for you to want to publish your own book. First, is to leave a legacy and second is to grow your business. Books are useful for lead generation, authority, visibility, credibility, and also lead conversion. When making a cover, pick out three designs from best sellers from the same category as your book idea. Ask your designinger to make a design that emulates those while at the same time stands out from them. “Does the world need another book? Well, the answer is, it depends. But most probably, they do need your book and you specifically need your book out. ” — Alinka Rutkowska Connect with Alinka Rutkowska: Website: https://leaderspress.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alinkarutkowska/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AlinkaRutkowska Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Alinka-Rutkowska/e/B0040KKTUC Connect with Jordan: For executives wanting a complimentary executive coaching conversation: jordan@jordangoldrich.com Website: www.workplacewarriorinc.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordangoldrich1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jordan.goldrich Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordangoldrich/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jgoldrich/

Do you want to grow your business through a lead generation book? To build authority and credibility, you cannot just do it by yourself. We've done ads. We've done this type of ads. We've done this type of PR. We don't have anything tangible. When people talk to me, they talk to five, 10 others like me. You go to a bookstore, you find a shelf, and you say, “Okay, my book belongs to this shelf.” And then you'd want to think about your unique selling proposition. How does your book stand out from the other books on that shelf? And once you have the answer to this question, then you want to get started on your outline, and really cleverly come up with potential calls to action. And once you have that, then you write. And if you're going to do it yourself, you'd want to be really disciplined and say, “Okay, I'm going to write this book in a month or two months. And in order to do that, this is the number of words I need to write every day. This is how much time it takes me.” Stick to it. 06:36 – Alinka's Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Take a one-minute quiz that will tell you which type of book is the best for you. A: No. The world needs your perspective. Some people will only be able to resonate with yours. Tweetable Takeaways from this Episode: “The world needs your perspective. Some people will only be able to resonate with yours.” -Alinka RutkowskaClick To TweetTranscript (Note, this was transcribed using a transcription software and may not reflect the exact words used in the podcast) Tom Poland 00:10 Greetings, everyone, and a very warm welcome to another edition of Marketing The Invisible. I'm Tom Poland, beaming out to you from Sunshine Coast in Australia, joined today by Alinka Rutkowska. Alinka, good day to you. A very warm welcome from Down Under. Where are you based? Alinka Rutkowska 00:24 Thank you so much, Tom. I'm in Italy, so I think we can compete here by the sea. Tom Poland 00:29 Alright. Folks, this is the second time now for this interview. Alinka and I tried to do this on February 8, which was some four or five months ago now, and I had a glimpse outside of your window on your apartment. My God, you live in paradise there. I'm very, very jealous. Let's get on with the interview, though. We'll stop the sightseeing tour. Folks, if you don't know Alinka and you want to become a USA Today or Wall Street Journal best-selling author, then you need to know her. She is the CEO of Leaders Press. She's got 172 authors on the USA Today and Wall Street Journal best-seller lists, which is frickin' phenomenal. So that, Alinka, is the title of our little interview today. “How To Become a USA Today and Wall Street Journal Best-selling Author”. Our seven minute starts now. Question number one is who's your ideal client? Alinka Rutkowska 01:21 Our ideal client is somebody who either wants to grow their business and they're looking to have a lead generation book, because Amazon is the search engine so when anybody's looking for an answer and you can provide that with a book, then that's the book that you want to do, or somebody who's looking to leave a legacy piece, such as, for example, the founder of DHL International wanted to tell his story of how he built his billion-dollar empire, and we did that for him. So those are the two types. Tom Poland 01:51 Could be incredibly satisfying for folks. So, question two is what's the problem you solve? How would you sum that up? Six and a half minutes left. Alinka Rutkowska 01:58 The problem we solve is we help entrepreneurs turn their book ideas into best-sellers. And why would they want that? That's for several reasons: to build their authority, build their credibility, have the big business cards, because nobody is going to throw out a book that you give them; they will throw out a business card, though. And a little book or even a full-size book that you can get on the USA Today or Wall Street Journal best-seller list and into bookstores does that perfectly. Tom Poland 02:28 Brilliant credibility builders folks, but they are also great door openers. My first book ended up being a very good doorstop. But once you get a best seller with Alinka, then they become a door opener. Question three; five and a half minutes left. We've got these authors or budding authors, and how would they know they need to work with you? What's going on? What are the symptoms that would give them heads up and go “I need to reach out to Alinka and find out more about how she does this”? Alinka Rutkowska 02:57 You would reach a spot in your business or a time in your business where you say, “Okay, we've done so many things. We've done ads. We've done this type of ads. We've done this type of PR. We don't have anything tangible. When people talk to me, they talk to five, 10 others like me. So how am I going to stand out?” When you're an author, you stand out. When you're a best-selling author, you stand out. When you're a USA Today or Wall Street Journal best-selling author, you stand up. And now, you potentially want to do it all by yourself, or you probably don't want to learn creative writing right now in the whole publishing industry and how to create a marketing campaign to hit the list and fell out of it ten times and then succeed maybe the 11th time. But you probably have a business to run. So, if you want that authority, you want those extra clients that will find you through searches, you want to be the authority in your field, and you don't want to have a second job or project manage the whole thing, like you value the work of professionals and the whole idea of outsourcing and knowing that you should be in your genius zone, running your business, then it makes a lot of sense to hire somebody like me at Leaders Press to get that result for you. Tom Poland 04:07 Yes. I mean, this is a specialty and most of us don't have that specialty. We have something else which we make our money with. And I think a lot of people fail to realize that it's not just about writing the book. It's actually marketing the thing, getting out of the best-seller books. Otherwise, it just becomes like, I don't know. A lot of people say their website is like a billboard in the middle of the Sahara Desert. No one notices that you can write a book. I had the same experience. So that's your expertise. You already mentioned one of the mistakes, I think, in a roundabout way, which is doing it yourself, saying, “Well, I can just write a book and I'll do all the marketing.” Question four is what are some of the common mistakes people make when they want to write a book or they want to market it? What else would you add to that list? Three and a half minutes left. Alinka Rutkowska 04:53 Very often, people just write whatever is on their minds. So, they want to get it out. They feel like they have a story to share. They don't really think about whether the reader wants to read it. So, the first thing you should do is do the bookshelf exercise, I call it. It really is market research. So you go to a bookstore, you find a shelf, and you say, “Okay, my book belongs to this shelf.” So, let's say that's leadership. You found it in the bookstore. Great. And then you'd want to think about your unique selling proposition. How does your book stand out from the other books on that shelf? And once you have the answer to this question, then you want to get started on your outline, and really cleverly come up with potential calls to action. Where are you going to send people in which place in the book? How are you going to weave it in seamlessly so that it doesn't look like one big commercial? And once you have that, then you write. And if you're going to do it yourself, you'd want to be really disciplined and say, “Okay, I'm going to write this book in a month or two months. And in order to do that, this is the number of words I need to write every day. This is how much time it takes me.” Stick to it. We've had people who've been writing their book for ten years and never actually finished; worked with coaches, spent tens of thousands of dollars on coaches, who happily took their money. Tom Poland 06:08 Yeah. Alinka Rutkowska 06:08 The best clients are the committed slow learners, right? And then finally, they came to us and we got it out in less than a year. Tom Poland 06:18 I have not heard that before. The best clients are committed slow learners. Disguised me pretty well. You just laid out a great roadmap to move forward, and there's a series of steps there, folks. You'd want to press rewind and play that again several times and take copious notes. Let's go to question six, because you covered the last two questions very well. Thanks. But then you've got 90 seconds left. Where do people go to find out more about what you do? A landing page where they can get some more good information or even make contact with you. Alinka Rutkowska 06:53 The best place is http://www.leaderspress.com/discover where you'll be able to go through a one-minute quiz that will tell you which type of book is the best for you – if it's the lead generator, the legacy piece, or maybe a chapter in an anthology that will hit the USA Today list. And also, since they're your listener, you're going to get an audiobook of Outsource Your Book, which will help you discover the 17 steps to get your book done. Tom Poland 07:23 Fantastic. Folks, getting your book out there is one of the most worthwhile marketing pieces of assets you can develop. It's not going to change the world for you, but it's going to make a really big dent in your marketing efforts. It's worthwhile. So, it's http://www.leaderspress.com/discover. Alinka, we've got 20 seconds left. What's the one question I should have asked you but didn't? Alinka Rutkowska 07:44 Is the world not already full with enough books? Tom Poland 07:50 And ten seconds for the answer. Alinka Rutkowska 07:51 And the answer is no. Tom Poland 07:52 Right. Alinka Rutkowska 07:53 The answer is no. The world needs your perspective. Some people will only be able to resonate with yours. Plus, there are all the benefits you'll get. Tom Poland 08:01 Alinka, thanks so much for your time. Welcome to Not Another Marketing Podcast where I'm talking to Alinka Rutkowska, CEO of Leaders Press who create books for entrepreneurs from scratch so we're talking writing a book for your business.
‘As you grow bigger, you just have to be transparent. When people know where they're going, you actually have a good chance of getting there.' Alinka Rutkowska is the CEO of Leaders Press, a hybrid publishing house and distribution. She helps entrepreneurs create books from scratch, and 130+ of them have become bestsellers! Get to know her story here. ‘It really is about the people you surround yourself with.' When she was younger, Alinka was a self-proclaimed nerd and had dreamt of becoming an entrepreneur. Her hard work during her teenage years led her to a prestigious business school, and she keeps the same youthful curiosity and thirst for learning now that she runs her own business. Listen to her entrepreneurial journey, from an exciting internship to working for a big multinational corporation, to starting a company. This is an example of Alinka's service where she produces an anthology style book. Simon & Schuster distributed USA Today / Wall Street Journal best-selling Anthology. Topic: Leaders Who Last (Please RSVP) Here's what I have in mind to get you USA Today / WSJ best-selling author status: I'm putting together an anthology on the topic Leaders Who Last (can be leaders in any field), aimed at hitting the USA Today / WSJ best-selling list in March. I've now turned more than 130 authors into USA Today / WSJ best-sellers through my anthologies: Write and Grow Rich, Business Success Secrets, Quitless and Habits of Success. There's only a short window of opportunity to join this anthology because it will be distributed via Simon & Schuster and they need the list of authors asap. Here's how it works: You block your slot by Tuesday. You deliver a print ready chapter according to our guidelines by Nov 15 (there's an option for you to be interviewed and for your chapter to be ghostwritten at $1k) You get regular updates as I prepare the book for publishing and launch it to best-seller status in March 2022. (There's a long lead time because we work with traditional distribution channels via Simon & Schuster and we'll be distributing the book to bookstores as well.) In March you will call yourself a USA Today / WSJ best-selling author, proudly display that title on your book covers (existing and upcoming), use it in your marketing materials, business cards and email signatures and even take a selfie in the bookstore with the book on the shelf! The financial investment required from each co-author to make this happen is $5k. Your success is 100% guaranteed or you get your $$ back (I confidently take all the risk due to my 100% success track record) I'd love to work with you and turn you into a USA Today / Wall Street Journal best-selling author

Alinka Rutkowska is the CEO of Leaders Press, a USA Today and Wall Street Journal best-selling publishing company. Alinka creates books for entrepreneurs from scratch and launches them to bestseller status with an impressive 100% success rate. Leaders Press is a hybrid publishing company and the only one with a sales agreement with Simon & Schuster. A goal of many authors is to maximize their authority in their field and becoming a USA Today the best-selling author is the best you can be.Alinka turns many of her authors into bestsellers through anthologies. Becoming a USA Today bestseller is a huge undertaking. Every book that makes the list is never there by chance. It always takes an orchestrated effort planned well in advance to get the author to that place. By becoming an author in an anthology, you can spread the cost of using a service like Leaders Press to get the bestseller title. Anthologies, like virtual summits, are a great way to connect with other authors and form strategic partnerships. A large audience or subscriber list (250K) is the recommended audience for making USA Today's bestseller. It's all really a numbers game, as the more people you can reach, the more people will buy your book and push you to the top. Another benefit of being in an anthology is that you can share audiences and get closer to that ideal subscriber number together. The USA Today bestseller title opens many doors for authors, and it can be used your entire career. It is way more important to find out who can help you get there versus trying to figure out the “how” by yourself. She's also the author herself of several bestselling books, including Write and Grow Rich. And her books in combination have sold over 80,000 copies. So, welcome to the show, Alinka. Thank you so much for having me here, Steve. I'm excited to have you. And it's in the morning here in Virginia, but you're in Italy, right? So, it's in the afternoon for you. That's right. Just after lunch. So, hopefully that's not going to slow us down. So, I'd like to start our conversation as always about your entrepreneurial journey. So how does one become the CEO of a publishing company that helps entrepreneurs publish best-selling books? How does that even happen? Well, for me, it all started with passion. I used to work in multinational corporations. And at a certain point, I just felt like there was a ceiling that I sort of couldn't push through. And it wasn't definitely, you know, the top of the company was middle management. And I was being pushed into roles that I didn't want to do. I wanted to do something that they didn't want me to, to do. And so, the best way out was actually leaving. And so, as I was considering that move, I wrote a book and self-published it at the time that was over a decade ago. And the royalties from that book basically exceeded my corporate salary. So, when that happened, I thought, hey guys, I don't really need you anymore. I'm leaving. They even paid me to leave. So, I had those funds, funds from the royalties, and that allowed me to comfortably explore what I really was meant to do here in this world. And so, it started with writing more books, with marketing those books, with helping others do the same, and steadily it grew into Leaders Press, where we now help entrepreneurs turn their book ideas into bestsellers, including the big list and distribute through Simon & Schuster, which is traditional publishing. And we're now a 30 people business. So, this all happened step by step, starting with passion and the desire to do what excites me. Wow, that's almost unbelievable because I hear so few people who actually hit the jackpot with their first book. It's very rare, isn't it? It is very rare. And it's also quite naive to think that you could, you know, live off of the royalties of your one book for the rest of your life. I was very lucky when I did that. I had some marketing background. I asked a lot of questions. I looked for the answers. I tested things and I had that early success which got me super excited. Then, you know, that might have been a one-off for that one book, but eventually I created a system that is working now every time. We do a book. So, you know, sometimes it's the early lucky when that gets you excited and gets you in business. Well, definitely you need some luck, but I don't buy it that it was just luck. It must have been more than that. So which one was the first book that and why do you feel, why do you think it became so successful? How did that, you know, hit a chord with the readers? Well, it was a self-help book that I don't really even advertise anymore. It was called Read Me, I Am Magical. Why was it successful at the time? I think the market was not very saturated. It was just the beginning of the self-help book excitement and self-published books were just hitting the market in a massive way. But still, it was 10 years ago, so it was much easier to succeed and get noticed. So partly it was finding a niche that appreciated the book,
