The Village People hit their stride with such monster hits as "Y.M.C.A." and "In the Navy", proving that mainstream America will go to any lengths to not get the hint as to what their music's really about. We'll analyze the music from the band's golden age while also connecting it to the broader context of the late 70s music scene... You see, by this point Disco has completely overwhelmed American culture, inserting itself into every conceivable medium including breakfast cereals (seriously!). A backlash was inevitable, the most salient example of which was an ill-fated baseball promotion-turned-riot called Disco Demolition Night, which we'll explore in detail. Message originally given October 6, 2024 at The Summit Church in North Carolina.
For sailors lost at sea, the sextant was a remarkable tool designed to help them gain their bearings and navigate to where they needed to go. For us today, making our way through the dating world often feels akin to sailing across the vast ocean—and without the wisdom found in God's Word, we will find ourselves hopelessly lost. In this week's message, Pastor Bryan returns to Genesis 24 to equip us with biblical tools that can help us ensure we are charting a wise course as we pursue dating, engagement, and marriage.
Episode: 2899 The Rise and Fall of Celestial Navigation As Seen Through the Development of the Sextant. Today, the Vanishing Sextant.
*DRUMS PLEASE* Here it is, the pod, slightly transformed, just a bit of a break from the norm, just a little somethin' to break the monotony... Yes indeed, it is SUMMERTIME in the city and on the eve of America's birthday, the HBTG boys put their sunglasses on, oiled each other up like a pair of Navy fighter pilots prepping for a sand volleyball game, and headed north to the mighty Columbia River to seek, no, not the Northwest Passage, but the oldest bar in Portland's sector of this legendary waterway -- the Sextant Bar & Galley (4035 NE Marine Drive)! Built in 1973 by longtime owner/proprietor Dean Burch, this venerable, unpretentious local spot continues to be run by the same family today. It's a classic neighborhood bar & grill, featuring back patio river views interspersed with aircraft fly-overs -- a perfectly satisfying place to have a cold one. But with the sun in your face, a Corona or two coursing through your veins, and the endless possibility of summer on your mind, satisfaction is sometimes only as good as the next bar down river... ...So think of the summers of the past, adjust the bass and let the Apline blast, play this episode and let 'em run a rhyme and put yourself on cruise and lay back 'cause this is summertime... Join me for My Chat with Alex Thomas, Master Blender with Bushmill's Distillery. Alex has spent most of her career in Bushmill's. A couple of year's ago she was afforded the honour of developing her own brand within the distillery and so The Sextant was born. From there she progressed from Master Blender of The Sextant to Master Blender of Bushmills, a position she cherishes. It was amazing to hear the passion Alex has for her role and Bushmills is in safe hands with her as Master Blender. Playlist Track Time Start Time Opening and Introduction (Thom Holmes) 11:57 00:00 1. Herbie Hancock, Herbie Hancock Demonstrates The Rhodes Piano (1973 Rhodes). A terrific flexi-disc produced by Rhodes and narrated by Hancock who tells an interesting story about his first encounter with the instrument on a Miles Davis session and then he walks the keyboard through a series of effects. He speaks with the authority of a proud electronics tinkerer who understands the nuances that make this instrument so beloved by jazz musicians. This flexi-disc was originally delivered in the November 8, 1973 issue of Down Beat magazine. I provide both sides of the disc, in entirety. Tunes included during the demonstration include parts of Watermelon Man, Maiden Voyage, and The Spook. Soloist, Rhodes Electric Piano, Voice, Herbie Hancock. I thought it would be wisest to lead off this podcast with an overview of the Rhodes even though it is out of chronological sequence, being from 1973. We then go back a few years to hear tracks in proper time order. 12:48 11:57 2. The Don Ellis Orchestra, “Open Beauty” from Electric Bath (1967 Columbia). Alto Saxophone, Flute, Soprano Saxophone, Joe Roccisano, Ruben Leon; Baritone Saxophone, Flute, Bass Clarinet, John Magruder; Bass, Dave Parlato, Frank De La Rosa; Bass, Sitar, Ray Neapolitan; Congas, Bongos, Chino Valdes; Drums, Steve Bohannon; Leader, Trumpet, Don Ellis; Percussion, Alan Estes; Piano, Clavinet, Fender Electric Piano Fender, Mike Lang; Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, Ron Starr; Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Piccolo Flute, Clarinet, Ira Schulman; Timbales, Vibraphone, Percussion , Mark Stevens; Trombone, Dave Sanchez, Ron Myers, Terry Woodson; Trumpet, Alan Weight, Bob Harmon, Ed Warren, Glenn Stuart. 5:33 24:44 3. See the opening tracks from this podcast for a story about this session from Hancock. Bass, Ron Carter; Drums, Tony Williams; Piano, Fender Electric Piano, Herbie Hancock; Tenor Saxophone, Wayne Shorter; Trumpet, Miles Davis. 16:59 30:14 4. Oliver Nelson and Steve Allen, “Go Fly a Kite” from Soulful Brass (1968 Impulse). Another Steve Allen record, whom we heard from in part 1 playing the Wurlitzer Electric Piano. Here is a selection from an album on which he plays the Rock-Si-Chord and occasional piano. Arranged by Oliver Nelson; Rock-Si-Chord, piano, Steve Allen; Drums, Jimmy Gordon; session musicians, Barney Kessel, Bobby Bryant, Larry Bunker, Roger Kellaway, Tom Scott; Produced by Bob Thiele. 2:30 51:24 6. J & K “Mojave” from Betwixt & Between (1969 A&M, CTI). “J” is J.J. Johnson (trombonist) and “K” is Kai Winding (trombonist). Their ensemble included Roger Kellaway playing the electric clavinette. An example of using the clavinet in jazz. This was most likely a Hohner Clavinet Model C which had just been introduced in 1968. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios during late 1968. 2:31 53:54 7. Albert Ayler, “New Generation” from New Grass (1969 Impulse). Piano, Fender Rhodes, Arp Pro Soloist, Arp Odyssey, Arp 3604, Arp 2600, Arp PE-IV String Ensemble, composed by Herbie Hancock; Engineer, Tomoo Suzuki; Producer, David Rubinson. 7:33 1:58:46 The analog synthesizer became a regular companion of the Fender Rhodes in jazz, leading up to the end of the 1970s. 19.Bobbi Humphrey, “My Little Girl” from Satin Doll (1974 Blue Note). The great jazz funk flutist Bobbi Humphrey released a series of albums around this time that often-featured fantastic synthesizer players. Here you can pick out the Minimoog by Don Preston and the ARP (Odyssey?) by Larry Mizell. The synths included here are in contrast to the more experimental sounds that Herbie Hancock was issuing at the same time. Flute, Vocals, Bobbi Humphrey; ARP Synthesizer, Larry Mizell; Minimoog, Don Preston; Bass, Chuck Rainey; Congas, King Errison; Drums, Harvey Mason; Electric Piano Fender Rhodes, Fonce Mizell, Larry Mizell; Guitar, John Rowin, Melvin "Wah Wah" Ragin; Percussion, Roger Sainte, Stephany Spruill; Piano, Jerry Peters; Produced by Chuck Davis, Larry Mizell; Trumpet, Fonce Mizell. 6:39 2:06:19 20.Ramsey Lewis, “Jungle Strut” from Sun Goddess (1974 Columbia). ARP, ARP Ensemble, Piano, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer electric piano, Ramsey Lewis; Drums, Tambura, Congas, Percussion, Maurice Jennings; Electric Upright Bass Fender, Cleveland Eaton; Guitar, Byron Gregory; Written by R. Lewis. 2:52 2:17:32 22.Clark Ferguson, “Jazz Flute” from RMI Harmonic Synthesizer And Keyboard Computer (1974 Rocky Mount Instruments, Inc.). Not an instrument often used in jazz, so I turn to the company's demonstration album for a sample of this more advanced in the RMI keyboard family. RMI Harmonic Synthesizer, Clark Ferguson. 2:43 2:20:24 23. Fernando Gelbard, “Sombrero De Flores” from Didi (1974 Discos Redonde). A straight-up jazz track from Argentine musicial Gelbard that features both the Fender Rhodes and the Minimoog. This track features an outrageously unique Minimoog part that is akin to something you would hear from Sun Ra. Fender Rhodes, Minimoog, Fernando Gelbard; Bass, Ricardo Salas; Congas, Vocals, Ruben Rada; Drums, Norberto Minichillo; Fender Rhodes, Minimoog, Fernando Gelbard; Percussion, Effects, Miguel "Chino" Rossi; Producer, Alberto M. On this track you get to hear (I think) three different synthesizers all fit for Hammer's purpose, the solo Moog, Oberheim fills, and Freeman strings. Producer, Engineer, Piano, Electric Piano, Moog, Oberheim, and the Freeman string synthesizer; digital sequencer, Drums, Percussion, Composed by, Jan Hammer. 4:29 2:32:26 26.Larry Young's Fuel, “Moonwalk” from Spaceball (1976 Arista). In this episode I'm joined by Dr. Cameron Zinsou to talk about the Cairo (Sextant) and Tehran (Eureka) Conferences in late 1943. We recorded this episode at the beginning of the year so I hadn't quite reached this part of the 1943 research yet so there are a couple of references to things as if they are coming up but they have already passed. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mother-of-tanks/message

"Nos conseillers ont enfin la capacité d'accompagner les vendeurs sur leur problème de rénovation énergétique.", explique t-il . Et de poursuivre : "Nous sommes le premier réseau immobilier à former nos conseillers immobiliers au chiffrage des travaux. Ce qui leur permet d'estimer au mieux le prix d'un bien et de satisfaire au mieux leurs clients". An in depth and irreverent look at 90's TV classic Dawson's Creek hosted by Kathryn and Katie. This week, we've got a fairly Pacey centric episode (yay!) with some Jen and Dawson nonsense plus added homophobia (booo!) Also, Jen is being touted as Boston's answer to Carrie Bradshaw and we're supposed to think this is a good thing?!? We're chatting Dante's circles of hell (Dawson is involved), putting a one's virginity in a pot pourri box, the sequel to Pacey and Joey's crumbling 15 year marriage and Katie's continuing fantasy storyline for Jack and Todd from Sweet Valley High. So, let's fight about toothbrushes, get the best room but under totally crap conditions, start an random radio phone in and maybe go and sail around the Greek Islands… and remember, Civilisation can't survive without us! Many times a new mix is inspired by a track or album. In this case it was the new album, The Road Not Taken by Ecovillage. The album is full of long, deep string vibrations that carry you along from track to track, place to place, and memory to memory. This is one of my favorite albums of the year. So I went looking for, not just string based tunes, but tracks that had a similar slow, reflective pull. Sometimes a mix with track that are too similar can be stale but in this case the mix becomes one long meditation. As the tracks bleed one into another I experience an almost devotional trance, an ethereal sojourn. We are "live" from the VRMA Spring Forum conference in Chicago where we sit down in person with Brandreth Canaley, the COO of Sextant Stays, and recently on Forbes 30 under 30. Starting from her beginnings we discuss stumbling into the short-term rental industry as well as digging into how they scaled from 60 units before COVID to 500+ now. Brandy breaks down Sextant's model to aggressively scale all while staying profitable. In addition, we dig into the importance of having a blend of different properties types and locations to sustain revenue in case there's a drop in travel or other unforeseen circumstances. We also talk about the feelings behind being named to Forbes 30 Under 30 and nod to the amazing women leaders that have been leading the way in our space for as far back as we can see. In our inaugural episode, we catch up with guitarist Lionel Loueke. For over 15 years, he has dazzled worldwide audiences with a unique instrumental wizardry. He is also featured prominently as a sideman in the ensembles of Herbie Hancock. Compositionally, Loueke's language on the guitar is built on strong, driving bass lines often juxtaposed with a percussive vocal styling first developed in his native country of Benin. As an improviser, he exerts a magical command of his instrument over shifting time signatures, harmonic progressions, and song structures. In our conversation, we learn that Loueke, early in his career, adopted a practice of choosing courage over fear. One proving ground happened after his first two years in the United States; he auditioned for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in 2001. The evaluating panel then included Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Terence Blanchard. Loueke not only entered the program, but his resume very quickly grew to include work with all three musicians. Loueke's latest album, Close Your Eyes, continues his momentum and imagination using the Great American Songbook as a vehicle. For our Vinyl Word album feature, we spotlight a Hancock classic masterpiece, Sextant.Produced by Billy Robinson
In the early days of sailing and navigation, sailors had to stay close to the coast. They looked to the shore for landmarks to guide them. Hills, cliffs, churches, and windmills could all give a navigator key clues to his location. As local knowledge grew, and more people navigated coastal waters, books showcasing the horizon and specific landmarks regarding your route became available for purchase. A sailor knew as long as he could see land, he wasn't truly lost. By keeping an eye on the coast, you had that rough idea of your location. On this episode of Way Too Interested, writer Zito Madu joins Gavin Purcell to talk about poetry, being a voracious reader, and his interest in how animals like homing pigeons and monarch butterflies navigate around the world. Then, they're joined by David Barrie, the author of the books Sextant — about human navigation — and Supernavigators: Exploring the Wonders of How Animals Find Their Way. Barrie explains what we know and don't know about the topic and shares some mind-blowing examples of animals who can navigate far better than modern humans. Andreas is the founder of Sextant, a Miami based Short Term Rental management company that is changing what not only guests can expect from a serviced apartment, but what hotel professionals can expect from the rapid evolution and iteration going on in the hospitality industry. Sextant isn't a one off manager of Airbnb homes, they take over entire buildings, permitting them as hotels, staffing them with Valets and Housekeepers, acquiring liquor licenses and use telepresence front desk agents. If you wanted to get a look at what many hotels of the future will look like, this is very likely it. Andreas gives us look at how the company came to be, their service philosophy, staffing and retention approach, their target market and what's next for this innovative company. About Andreas Andreas King-Geovanis graduated from the University of Miami with a President's Scholarship and degrees in Economics and Environmental Science. He saw an opportunity in a historically weak job market and depressed housing values, and went into business for himself, purchasing his first property months after graduation. He founded Sextant in 2015 and has been at the forefront of the Miami vacation rental industry. Andreas has traveled to 40+ countries, was previously a nationally ranked fencer, and hopes to run his first marathon next year in Antarctica. Modern navigation equipment has made cruising so much easier, but has it made it safer? Lin Pardey ponders on exactly this as she describes how, after sailing more than 190,000 miles using traditional navigation, i.e. a sextant and stopwatch plus hand-bearing compass, she and Larry sail through the Line Islands using GPS.
