Pigweed, Crowhill, and Longinus crack open a high-octane Voodoo Ranger “GeForce” IPA and head west into one of the greatest adventures in American history: the Lewis and Clark expedition. What begins as a discussion of America's upcoming 250th anniversary quickly turns into a deep dive into the astonishing story of how a small band of explorers crossed an almost completely unknown continent armed with little more than maps, muskets, determination, and an absurd amount of practical skill. The conversation covers the Louisiana Purchase, Thomas Jefferson's constitutional concerns about buying so much land, and the widespread belief that America had just purchased a giant worthless desert. The guys discuss Jefferson's ambitious goals for the expedition — mapping rivers, collecting scientific samples, establishing diplomatic relations with Native tribes, searching for trade opportunities, and hopefully finding a navigable water route to the Pacific Ocean.Along the way, they explore the personalities of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the remarkable role of Sacagawea and her infant son Jean-Baptiste, encounters with Native American tribes, brutal winters, grizzly bears, starvation in the Rockies, and the staggering amount of improvisation required just to survive. They also marvel at the sheer competence of frontier-era men who could build forts, construct canoes, map terrain, hunt, trap, waterproof boats with animal hides, and keep detailed scientific journals — all while trying not to die.The episode also touches on the strange emotional aftermath of the expedition, especially the tragic decline of Meriwether Lewis after returning home from one of the greatest journeys in American history. The result is part history lesson, part meditation on exploration and resilience, and part appreciation for the rugged, multi-talented people who helped shape early America. Also discussed: woolly mammoth rumors, whale blubber, drunken bargain malt liquor IPAs, and why showing up with a woman and a baby might be the greatest diplomatic strategy ever devised.

BBQ champion Terry Black, winner of the World BBQ Championship in Memphis and multiple Illinois BBQ Championship titles, shares expert advice and summer grilling tips to help listeners improve their backyard barbecue game this season. Author and motivational speaker John Morgan joins the program to discuss his book “War on Fear,” where he explores overcoming fear, building confidence, and finding purpose through resilience, mindset, and personal growth. Plus, Theo Lewis Clark returns for the weekly Movie Trivia segment, testing entertainment knowledge and sharing fun Hollywood insights. Learn more about your ad choices. Between 1979 and 1982, five people vanished or were murdered in the Lewis–Clark Valley of Idaho and Washington. Decades later, investigators still believe the cases may be connected to a single suspect—but despite rumors, theories, and years of investigation, no one has ever been charged. Host Diana Korte speaks with historian Craig Fehrman whose newest title, THIS VAST ENTERPRISE, is a major revisionist history of the Lewis and Clark years-long expedition that began in 1804. Commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson who fought bitter Congressional unrest to get the funding for it, this group of 45 or so traveled up the Missouri River from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean in Oregon. Each chapter moves to a different person's point of view, showcasing the many characters beyond the two leaders who flesh out the story of this expedition. Among the many research innovations the author brings to this book are lost documents, Native perspectives, and oral history passed down over centuries.
Today's episode was recorded live at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, for the annual Lewis & Clark International Affairs Symposium. The theme of this year's symposium was Crumbling Pillars: The Age of Authoritarianism. For this live episode, I speak with Lewis & Clark professor Kyle Lascurettes about how democratic backsliding and authoritarian resilience are impacting the United Nations and other international institutions. Kyle Lascurettes and I speak for about 25 minutes before a really interesting question-and-answer session with students. A huge thank you to the students for both their great questions and for organizing the whole thing. This was the 64th annual Lewis & Clark International Affairs Symposium, which is entirely student-run. I had a great time meeting many of the students and spending the day on this gorgeous campus.

It's important to know who came before us. History is a great teacher of things to come. It's not often we get to experience that history, but when we do, it changes our perception of the world, our community, and ourselves. In Stevenson, Washington, students spend five days kayaking 132 miles to Astoria, Oregon. As you will see in this story, yes, it's about retracing the journey of Lewis & Clark, but more importantly, this experience introduces high school students to the idea that adventure is yours if you are willing to take it on.I found out about this adventure when we visited the area for another video shoot. The school superintendent mentioned Lewis & Clark in passing. Later, I met someone in the community, mentioned the story, and this person said how much, and found the funding. Enjoy, share with friends, and start something like this at your school.Kids need to know what they can do.
In Part 2, the expedition begins! Join the Corps of Discovery as they eat their way across 8,000 miles, shoot at grizzly bears, hold intertribal talent shows, and search for the Pacific—while surviving on dried meat and questionable water. We follow them from Missouri to the ocean and back, plus take a look at what happened after the journey, including mysterious deaths, political drama, and what the founding fathers never told you about unpaid expense reports.

In Part 1 of our Lewis & Clark adventure, we rewind the clock to meet Meriwether Lewis and William Clark before they became the dynamic duo of westward exploration. From whiskey rebellions to battles with Little Turtle, and one very aggressive tornado full of trees, we trace their wild early years and the not-so-smooth road that led to the greatest road trip in American history. Spoiler: It includes government bureaucracy, failed promotions, and a whole lot of moccasins.

The search for a killer has expanded beyond the 1979 disappearance of Christina White and to murders that started in 1963 in Chicago and include mysterious drownings in North Carolina and California and three murders and one additional disappearance in the Lewiston, Idaho and Clarkston, Washington area. Allison Dickson and I are joined by Cathy Belben and Samantha Sawyer, researchers of The Snake River Killer podcast in this episode. How does a 12-year-old girl disappear from her best friend's house on the day of the local fair? Who could be responsible her going missing? Why was her homework found miles away on the farm where that same best friend kept her horse?
