On today's episode, I'm joined by writer Bethany Henry Gemmell for a special end-of-year conversation. It felt like the perfect way to close out the final episode of 2026—thoughtful, generous, and deeply inspiring. This marks Bethany's second time on the podcast (or, as I like to call it, the Chai Room), and it was such a joy to reconnect. In this episode, we dive deep into the dramaturgical process, with Bethany leading the conversation around working as dramaturg on the second audio series of Chai with Rai, An Ode: Reframing the Classics, now streaming on Patreon. We also explore the “grass is greener” mindset, Bethany's upcoming projects—including a new play and a new novel—and then shares valuable advice for emerging playwrights, freelance creatives, and dramaturgs. You'll also hear a snippet from Catherine, the short story Bethany wrote for the very first storytelling series, Symphonies of Beaded Threads. Bethany's bio: Bethany (they/he) is a Northern playwright. They explore themes exploring family, our relationship to media, and humanity's capability to be good and evil. Examples include being a co-writer for Royal Court Theatre's Listen Local project in 2019, 'WOLF' at Theatre503 in 2023, and 'well, you could be a guy (non-binary edition)' for Baron Court Theatre's Queering the Canon Festival in 2023. Their most recent project was 'The Trial of Thomas Greene' at Hope Mill Theatre for Qweerdog Shorts/Hope 200 Festival in 2025. They were selected for Young Vic's inaugural 2022/23 Creators Program, Soho Theatre's 2023/24 Writers' Lab, and for Nottingham Playhouse's Amplify Program in 2025. Their audio-duologue 'Catherine', dedicated to and involving their mum, is now featured in the Chai With Rai exhibition at the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre. They have provided dramaturgical support for community companies like Neurospace Theatre and Wild Forest Theatre from 2020 to 2023. Now, they're developing their dramaturgical skills by supporting artists for An Ode: Reframing the Classics. Topics Breakdown: "Grass is always greener on the other side" mentality. Starving artist vs life experience and the success metrics we place on ourselves. Evolution of personal artistic storytelling. Playwriting with and through ADHD playwriting. Exploring time and thoughts as a playwright. Dramaturgy process for An Ode: Reframing the Classics. Reflecting on the Chai with Rai's Summer exhibition 20245 in London/ Theatre 503 Rapid Writers response to Stray Dogs by Theo Chester. The Royal Court Theatre's Listen Local Program. Grant Gemmell is the Managing Director at Facet5 Global, and someone I've had the privilege of working alongside for over 15 years. His deep expertise in personality science—and his commitment to unlocking human potential—has shaped how I think about team dynamics, psychological safety, and the value of quality conversations at work. In this conversation, we go deep into what it takes to build truly thriving teams. We explore how rituals, boundaries, and better dialogue can radically improve the way teams connect, collaborate, and perform. In this episode, we cover: Why personality should be seen as a lens, not a label—and how that shift transforms team culture The role of mutual understanding and respect in building psychological safety How clear personal boundaries support trust, wellbeing, and long-term performance Grant's five “super skills” of meaningful, high-quality conversations What happens when teams misuse personality tools—and how to course-correct Simple, powerful rituals that sustain connection in hybrid and dispersed teams The most urgent leadership shifts needed right now—and the surprising trends to watch In the work I do with teams—and in writing this book—it's clear that conscious self-awareness isn't optional anymore. It's the foundation for everything: how we show up, how we connect, and how we lead with intention. Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 13 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. This week starts off with a real bang as Franca Strandell leads us through an interview with Ned Dane, the Digital Partnerships Marketing Coordinator for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). They discuss how Ned's career took a surprising turn when, after starting in finance, he accepted an internship with Formula 1 racing that opened his eyes to the world of sports partnerships and marketing. The pair discuss the highs and lows of moving from finance to sports, the differences between the industries, and what it takes to break into the competitive sports industry. Dane also gives the audience an idea of what his current role at the UFC is like, where he spends his days analyzing data and planning creative projects like content shoots featuring top fighters. Before signing off, Franca and Ned touch on the difficult balance of optimizing partnerships and how to keep the UFC's brand authentic without overdoing commercial content. Closing the episode this week is Eric Hong, a sales ad intern at NBC Universal who sits down to talk to Anna Gemmell. Hong delves into what being an ad sales intern entails and what being an intern specifically at NBC Universal is like including what is expected when collaborating with other departments of the company and the feeling of Universal's company culture. Gemmell and Hong talk about some of the fun perks of being part of the intern program, and Hong discusses the NBC Universal application process, interview process, and tips to help other potential interns applying for this specific internship process. They finish the interview with a discussion of how ad sales can often be overlooked as a pivotal part of marketing, which dots landscape of the creative and cultural industries more than people realize.

A Māori warden living in Ōpōtiki says an increased police presence in the Bay of Plenty town is reassuring for locals amid a rise in gang violence. This includes a shooting on Saturday night that left a woman in a serious condition. There have been ongoing tensions between Black Power and the Mongrel Mob, with shots fired at cars and houses in the past week. Local police now have special powers to search suspected gang members' cars and addresses and are promising to be highly visible across Ōpōtiki and Whakatāne. Te Owai Gemmell, chairperson of Māori Wardens in Ōpōtiki, says the increased police presence is noticeable. Gemmell spoke to Guyon Espiner.

From a short interview with a chirpy young lady at NatEx 2020, I've come to respect the juggernaut mindset of Samantha Gemmell. I thought that being a Virtual Assistant (VA) was just about setting appointments and "manning* the phones" while the main practitioner was helping patients. I was SO WRONG! Today, Sam takes us through what a VA is, the numerous tasks and responsibilities placed on a VA, and how to find one if you're a practitioner in need of another set of hands/ears/eyes/mind. In the years she's been a VA herself, to now mentoring others and matching those she helps with appropriate practitioners, Sam has developed support collateral, algorithms, and her mentorship program "to help others to help others". It's her way of giving back to the practitioner world and she's nothing less than awesome! Listen in! You're bound to learn heaps like I did!FREE GUIDE: https://samanthagemmell.simplero.com/ultimate-guide-rockstar-health-va*forgive the misogyny
Sarah says in today's episode, networking online Vs in person isn't very different - however when you look at how long it may take you to develop a relationship over zoom or in person, naturally in person accelerates the relationships much faster. In my own experience, some of the connections I made face to face in the first few years of my business have significantly impacted the growth of my company. I find that just like social media, meeting new people in person is a great way to expand your network, but also encourage longer term relationships. After meeting someone in person, follow them on instagram, that way each time they watch your story, see your content, its a peak inside of your life. Keeping you at time of mind when that person eventually needs the service you offer! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode, I talk with Sarah Gemmell about the importance of prioritizing yourself and your health & wellness in your work-life. Sarah shares her perspective on how to make internal wellness initiatives work for you and how effective programs can help organizations seek and keep talent — while also producing great work. Sarah is an addictions counselor turned fitness coach who has spent years helping women to get in shape, get healthy, and gain a ton of confidence through holistic, anti-diet culture fitness and wellness coaching. Sarah addresses the exercise, the nutrition, and the mindset in a way that is simple and easy to follow, but also in a way that allows you to actually enjoy your life. After working with individuals and watching the Great Resignation start, it became apparent that corporate organizations needed help to acquire and retain talent, so Sarah began helping organizations to implement much-needed employee wellness initiatives. When she is not working, she is either learning TikTok dances, exploring outdoors, or with her horses.
