Powerball, Mega Millions Cash for Life and more. Missouri offers many games of chance that have potential benefits for the players and guaranteed benefits for the State. In fact, the Missouri Lottery has contributed about 3 to 4% of the annual State funding for public education in the State of Missouri, more than 8 billion dollars to the State since 1986. These games describe the chances that a player will win a given game, often using calculations common in a probability class, such as permutations and combinations. So what happens if you check the calculations and you find that the calculations are not correct. A tale of lottery calculations, checked and fixed, is the focus of this episode of Stats and Stories. Dr. Matthew McIntosh is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Missouri. Before transitioning into academia, Dr. McIntosh spent nearly three decades in clinical research, bringing valuable real-world insights to his teaching and research. In the Spring of 2023, he developed the Keno Project, an initiative aimed at correcting the displayed odds of winning the Keno lottery game in state lotteries, with a focus on engaging undergraduate students in statistical research. The project's first manuscript has been accepted for publication in Significance magazine. His research interests include power analysis, sample size determination, and promoting undergraduate research in statistics. Dr. McIntosh's recent publications in sample size calculations focus on multiple linear regression and multivariate one-sided hypothesis tests. In 2018, outside his university work, Dr. McIntosh created statisticsmatt, a YouTube channel that offers tutorials and educational content for both undergraduate and graduate statistics students.  Joseph is a senior studying Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics at the University of Missouri. Since his sophomore year, he has contributed to the Keno Project, using statistical models to derive accurate odds for the lottery game Keno, addressing discrepancies often found on state lottery playslips and websites. His work, which has been accepted for publication in Significance magazine, marks a key milestone in his academic journey. As an active member of the Mizzou Racing team, Joseph helps design and build a formula-style car from the ground up, gaining hands-on experience in motorsport engineering. This aligns with his goal of pursuing a career in motorsport, with the ultimate aim of working in Formula 1. He has also completed several engineering internships, honing his technical skills in various areas of the field.  Gary G. McIntosh, CLU has for the past 15 years of semi-retirement, has dedicated his efforts to establishing Allen County's Your Community Foundation, where he currently serves as an active advisor. His team focuses on fostering community engagement and promoting growth through education and collaboration. He has held leadership roles in several organizations, including the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, and as both City and County Commissioner. He has also served as an at-large board member for School District 257 and as a trustee for Allen Community College.

Preston worked for seven years helping to produce a television program for a Christian magazine which received national recognition in the magazine, "Christianity Today."In June 2010, Preston received an honorary Doctorate degree from Vision International University of Ramona, California, in recognition of his "outstanding accomplishments in ministry and publishing." Vision International has 140,000 students worldwide. Dr. Stan DeKoven stated at the graduation ceremony, attended by an estimated 1,000 people, that Vision seldom awards honorary Doctorate degrees, and never more than one per year.Preston served as minister for the Ardmore Church of Christ, (now The Family of God church) for 16 years from 1992 to 2008. He resigned to devote himself full-time to research, writing, seminars and debates through the organization he founded, PRI. PRI also sponsors an annual conference (Preterist Pilgrim Weekend – PPW) at the Ardmore Convention Center with attendees who have come from all 50 states, and numerous international locations over the past several years, which has grown in attendance nearly every year. What began as a simple seminar with only a few people, has now grown into a staple "must come" event for many since the inception of the PPW.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.

Jim Packard is the poster child for a life of consistent action. Whether it was being the top-producing paper boy or turning a $500 investment into a $17 million-a-year business, he excelled every day, all day for years. Married for more than four decades, father of two highly successful sons, Jim's consistency extended to his personal life as well. Recognized for his work in the community, he was Jaycees' Man of the Year for both his city and his state. After selling his business to a Fortune 500 company and taking "early retirement", Jim just increased his entrepreneurial interests. He shepherded inventions through development and appeared on QVC over 25 times. Through that venue alone, he sold over a million dollars of a single product. In the area of network marketing, he was a distributor of the year in two different companies, led thousands of distributors and customers, and was always a top 10 money earner. ---------------------------------------- This show is sponsored by Leopard Solutions Legal Intelligence Suite of products, Firmscape, and Leopard BI. Hellllo Listeners! It is officially February, and there is green grass and puddles outside. This weather has been nothing short of bonkers! On that note... there are winter events in the area that have had to get creative. One of those events is the BLA's largest annual winter event, The Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza. We know we've talked about it a lot, but with the news coming out about it being "hybrid" and now having a map of the lakes involved, the LL crew felt there needed to be an episode dedicated to answering all of the questions. On this show, Sheena, Shane and Benji from the Jaycees tell us all about the rules, the lakes, the Fish Donkey app, the prizes, and every little detail you need to know. And most importantly, ways to stay safe. It's been a crazy few weeks for this crew, so we thank them so much for taking time to come on the show! Also this coming weekend is Crosslake Winterfest - who has also had to pivot some of their plans - plus the live music all around the area, including Reese Glover at Roundhouse this Saturday night. Not only is the episode full of laughs, but Mike also touches on some really serious and emotional topics. Thank you so much to Mike for coming on the show, and I have a good feeling we'll be hearing more from him. Marc Bingham, a pioneering entrepreneur in the field of telephone directory publishing, has made a notable impact in the industry by identifying and successfully exploiting a unique market niche. Launching his first phone directory in 1971 in Carbon County as a young government employee, Marc recognized an untapped opportunity to offer comprehensive directories at more affordable rates than those of traditional phone companies. This innovative approach proved successful, leading to the growth of his venture, Phone Directories Co., which eventually published directories in over 200 locations including  several Canadian provinces.A key to Marc's success has been his adoption of the Jaycees organization's principles, which emphasize a balanced approach to life — financially, mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually. These principles not only shaped his business philosophy but also guided his commitment to community service. In 2007, Marc made a significant shift by selling Phone Directories and investing his profits into Blue Diamond Capital, a company based in Orem. Blue Diamond has since fostered the growth of various businesses across retail, hospitality, land development, and aviation in four states. Beyond his business endeavors, Marc is also known for his philanthropy, particularly his substantial contributions to Utah's public universities, supporting diverse projects like an Entrepreneurship and Energy Research Center, a botanical garden museum, and a new track, reflecting his commitment to giving back to the community and supporting educational initiatives.

She goes to Lake Geneva to explore things like the Mr. Lake Geneva Pageant, where men compete pageant-style to benefit area nonprofits as well as charity events centered around golf, biking, and more. She explores Cycling Without Age, an organization that provides rides to elderly people in need - it started in Denmark and now has chapters in 39 countries, including the US and Wisconsin. DoorTran, a transportation service in Door County, does similar work in Wisconsin's most famous peninsula. Conservation alliances in Wisconsin advance the quality of life in communities as well as the environment, and Ana shares the one in Sauk Prairie, which is also active in revamping the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant grounds. Serving as a mentor is another wonderful way to “pay it forward,” and programs like the Outagamie County Mentoring Program illustrate these benefits. She also discusses a variety of walks and runs, galas, interesting contests, festivals and more that benefit communities across the state. VolunteerMatch.org provides a good resource for finding some of them.Eric dives into some unique Wisconsin workouts and ways to get in better shape for 2024(hey, he tries every year) and some of those workouts include yoga with goats or alpacas - oddly soothing for some reason; curling and ice skating in winter; pole fitness; bungee workouts at places like Swoop; TRX and cycle workouts at places like CycleBar, Spire, and Barre Code; and unique spots like Bounce Trampoline at Hometown Pilates in Fitchburg, which combines dance, music and bounce for a full cardio workout, and also helps with balance and coordination and studies have shown bounce is good for lymph circulation. More fun than your usual regular run or some sit-ups!Jake discusses food as part of his resolution, and covers examples of places around the state where you can eat healthier. Places around the state are now offering fresher and healthier grab-and-go meals and you can find them at markets like The Farmacy in Green Bay, co-ops like Willy Street in Madison, People's Co-Op in La Crosse, and Outpost Natural Foods, which has multiple locations around Milwaukee, and more. Farmers markets have greatly multiplied in number across the state where you can get fresh-grown food from area farms, bakers, and more; they're often a great way to kick off your weekend. Many of these markets take place in the warmer months, but more and more communities have winter markets indoors. Jake also drops some favorites across the state, including Downtown Grocery in Wausau; Thai Basil in Madison; Subhouse in Hudson, and Island Cafe in Minocqua, where you'll find a Mediterranean menu amidst an area primarily known for pub food and fish fries in the great North Woods. He provides a nice blueprint for places that offer that combination of tasty cuisine and better nutrition many of us want.Hope your New Year's resolutions work well and you have a happy, healthy 2024!   Inside Sponsors:Jefferson County: https://bit.ly/3gt0Nau

Learn more here; https://bit.ly/3TSFYY4   Campfire Conversation: Eric and Ana preview Halloween with the last big batch of events leading up to the holiday. Some celebrate the holiday with a bar crawl, which is as Wisconsin as it gets. Milwaukee is home to the “Milwaukee Official Halloween Bar Crawl” which features a multi-day pass to multiple venues in the city with drink specials, costume contests, “ghostly cocktails” and more. Multiple cities and towns across the state are having similar crawls, so check for one near you! Meanwhile, cities on Lake Winnebago have a lot of these events. At the bottom, Fond du Lac's Witherell House – an old house built in 1853 – is filled with haunting stories and history and you can visit and experience some of that for yourself. Up in Oshkosh, the Grand Opera House offers ghost tours. The lovely building dates back to 1883 but like many performance venues, stories of hauntings and strange happenings abound; the Grand Oshkosh Haunted Happenings Ghost Tour will take you behind the scenes. Just north of there in Neenah, you can attend the Burial Chamber, where you can spend the night at a complex of haunted houses – and with opportunities like the “Trapped & Buried Alive Experience,” there's a good chance you'll get freaked out. Meanwhile to the east, Road America between Plymouth and Elkhart Lake hosts Wisconsin Fear Fest through Sunday the 29th with three terrifying haunted houses amidst the world-renown race track grounds. Over in Sheboygan, the Dominion of Terror is run by the local Jaycees and they know how to terrorize you in a haunted house with over 20 rooms; you can also check out a 45 minute escape room. Meanwhile down in Hartford, Terror on Rural Street is open one more time this weekend with a 17-room haunted house and over 30 actors bent on giving you a hair-raising experience – it's one of the highest-rated haunted houses in the country! For an outdoor experience, you can check out the Little Park of Horrors in Menomonee Falls where you navigate a course in Old Falls Village Park outside, in the dark, and you have to be 13 or older to even try it. For an indoor experience designed to freak you out, it's always wild at Ripley's Believe It Or Not! in downtown Wisconsin Dells. It offers over 200 ghoulish artifacts including cannibal skulls, two-headed calves, and the mummified head of a real serial killer – who some say haunts the building. Finally, if you want a moving experience (for real), the East Troy Railroad offers haunted dinner trains – and the Osceola Express in northwestern Wisconsin has rides too, more about pumpkins than hauntings – or is it?? Check these out for a wild experience as we approach Halloween! Inside Sponsors:Washington County: https://bit.ly/3qayJALMarshfield Clinic: https://bit.ly/3Wj6pYj

Devin: Peter, what is your superpower?Peter: My superpower is caring and doing humanitarian efforts most of my life.Devin: John, what's your superpower?John: I grew up in a very large family, and the concept of getting along with people comes into play because, you know, you got to love brothers and sisters. When Peter Teahen started thinking about this round-the-world trip, his wife was supportive but didn't expect him to pull it off. After a year, when he announced his plan to actually go, she insisted he find a co-pilot. Luckily, marriage had connected the pair to a cousin who was also a pilot, John Ockenfels.John, with over three decades in Rotary, was excited to make the trip and, after a few weeks of contemplation–and discussion with his wife–agreed to the journey and brought the fight to end polio to the flight. That, it turns out, was just the beginning of their challenges.“This was the trip that couldn't be done, that shouldn't be done, that nobody in their right mind was going to do. But somehow, we managed to pull that off,” John says.Planned for 2020, the pair had their trip canceled by covid. Rescheduled for 2021, covid's relentlessness canceled the second effort. A third effort, in 2022, was blocked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The duo had planned to take an established northern route that included stops in Russia. US-Russia tension after the attack resulted in revoked invitations. Almost anyone else would have given up at this point. The primary alternative, a southern route, would require 15 and 17-hour-long hops over the Pacific, which their plane couldn't handle.Undeterred, the pilots just bought a plane that could make the trip! They left on May 5th and returned on July 31st. Over the years of preparation and during the flight, the duo raised millions for polio, counting the $2 for $1 match provided by the Gates Foundation.“We believe we had just raised our first million dollars before our departure. Since then, we're pretty sure that we've got at least another half a million that we've raised along the route. So that's going to be a pretty good check to the Rotary Foundation,” John says.Rotary leads the global effort, now funded primarily by the Gates Foundation, in collaboration with UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control.John explained the history from his perspective, “I joined Rotary in 1986. They had just gotten on board with this polio elimination program. At that point, three-fourths of the world was endemic with polio. We watched these charts go from red to green as polio around the world went away.”Today, polio is endemic only in Pakistan and Afghanistan. A 2022 visitor from Pakistan was contagious, and the first case of polio in the US in decades was recorded.Peter explains the growing vulnerability around the world, including in rich countries:In today's environment, where there's a decline in people vaccinating, especially post-covid, a lot of people have just dismissed vaccinations. The vaccination rate in the world is at the lowest it's been for years. That sets up trouble for children and families whose children will be exposed to the polio virus. Studies show that if we don't eliminate polio soon, in the next ten years, we'll see 200,000 new cases of polio. It's time to stop. It's time to get across the finish line.Completing the journey and raising so much money to end polio required the pilots to use their superpowers, Peter's caring and John's getting along with people.AI Episode Summary* Peter Teahen and John Ockenfels completed a round-the-world trip in their Cessna airplane to raise money and awareness for the fight to end polio.* Peter had the dream to fly his plane around the world and started planning in 2018.* He approached John, who initially hesitated but eventually joined the trip.* Their original route was canceled three times due to Covid and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, so they had to plan a new southern route.* The route included stops in Newfoundland, Iceland, Europe, Crete, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Kuala Lumpur, Surabaya, Darwin, Canes, Brisbane, Pango Pango, Hawaii, Maui, and Oakland.* The trip was challenging, and they faced risks and limited communication, but they successfully completed the journey.* Their goal was to raise money for the fight against polio, as there are still cases in Afghanistan and Pakistan.* They raised over a million dollars before their departure and believe they raised another half million along the route.* They emphasized the importance of polio eradication and the need for continued vaccinations and funding.* Their trip was a spiritual journey, and they were inspired by the support and dedication they witnessed in communities affected by polio. How to Develop Caring As a SuperpowerPeter shared his feelings about the trip, which included time volunteering directly to give oral polio vaccines to children:For me, this trip around the world became a spiritual journey. It was so true, especially when we were working in the ghettos in the poorest part of Karachi in Pakistan, holding babies in our arms and giving them the vaccine, talking to the parents, talking to the caregivers who are there. It moved me to tears. In Afghanistan, a lot of the resistance came from the fathers of the children who would prohibit the vaccinations. John and I witnessed in the ghettos of Karachi, where the fathers came out of their homes with their babies in their arms, and they presented their children for the polio [vaccine] drops. That brought tears to my eyes. I'm thinking that is the power of humanity when in one country, people would be killed for giving drops to their children and through education and creating an environment where they felt safe, the men presented their children for the drops.By following his example of caring, you strengthen your ability to care, potentially helping to create a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. How to Develop Getting Along With People As a SuperpowerJohn grew up in a large family and learned a lot of lessons there. He shared a notable insight:Being in that large family, we didn't really have a lot of money. We had to make do. But we also found out that we got a lot of help from other people.I found out that returning that help, giving that help back and working in other entities, Rotary or Jaycees or whatever the organization is–many other organizations I've been working in–I enjoy that aspect of it. Even today, now that I'm retired, my wife and I still spend many, many hours every week and every year in particular, doing things for other organizations for which we get no funding or no pay. And we're okay with that.John has worked his entire career with his four brothers in the family business. He shared the advice he often gives to help people learn to get along. “There are differences for everybody and everything. Play to those differences. Work with those differences, and you can make a difference.”By following his example and advice, you can emulate John's ability to get along with others, serve in your community and make it a strength that can enable you to do even more good in the world.Superpowers for Good is a reader-supported publication. “I stuck with what I care about,” Rebecca Sive is proud to say after working as a political activist and strategist for more than five decades. And she is still pushing for what she believes in with relentless persistence. Her interest in politics started young. She joined her father at the age of 8 as he campaigned for Congress. Her activism grew in college as she witnessed inequality within her campus and throughout the area, leading her to become a community organizer and later, when she moved to Chicago, an advisor to celebrities, business leaders, public officials, political candidates, philanthropists, and organizational leaders. She shares with Jeanne the meaning of sisterhood, the importance of being a present member in your community, why several heads are better than one, how to dissect a failure to learn from your mistakes, and some special insights into working with Chicago's first Black mayor Harold Washington. About Rebecca: Rebecca Sive is the author of three books on American women's politics and power; a women's leadership strategist, motivational speaker, experienced media analyst, and a past faculty member of the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and statewide governmental official. She co-produced and co-hosted the podcast, #VoteHerIn, with Two Broads Talking Politics, a “best political podcast,” according to Parade magazine. Sive's articles and op-eds have appeared in The Huffington Post, Crain's Chicago Business, The Hill, at MSNBC, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, The Chicago Sun-Times, and elsewhere. Rebecca is the founding director of one of the nation's first women's centers, founding commissioner of the Illinois Human Rights Commission, a leader and advisor of the campaign to elect Chicago's first African American mayor (Harold Washington), and appointee of his as a Commissioner, Chicago Park District. Sive was among the national decision makers who developed women's issues agendas for US presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. She holds an M.A. in American History and is the recipient of many awards for her public leadership, including from the United Negro College Fund, the YWCA, the Jaycees, and her alma maters, the University of Illinois, and Carleton College. Amelia Rose's parents wanted her to have an aspirational name — one that she could live up to. So, with her dad's surname, she was given the name Amelia Rose Earhart. Growing up, her name often prompted questions. Is she related to the Amelia Earhart? Will she become a pilot? Finally, after a genealogy test and a newfound inspiration for flight, Amelia Rose thought she was able to answer YES to both of these questions. Years later, however, the news broke. In a “gotcha” moment of journalism, Amelia's coworker at a news station uncovered that she had no relation to the American Hero, Amelia Earhart. The news couldn't have come at a worse time. Amelia Rose was preparing for an around-the-world flight and was now being called a fraud, a liar, and a fake. The embarrassment of it all had her questioning if she should proceed or quit on the dream she had worked so hard for. In this conversation between two female pilots, Sylvia and Amelia discuss what it means to embody a role model, setting boundaries, Amelia's around-the-world flight, how to overcome challenges in personal and professional settings, and so much more.Topics Include: - Amelia's experience with news and anchoring - Women in aviation- How to develop a skill stack- Focusing on what you can control- Giving back in aviation - The Fly with Amelia Foundation- Struggling with fear and doubt- The power of partnership in pursuit of your goals- Imposter Syndrome- Overcoming the fear of rejection- And other topics…Amelia Rose Earhart is the youngest woman to fly around the world in a single-engine aircraft. In 2014, Amelia flew a Pilatus PC12-NG 28,000 miles, crossing the equator six times, through fourteen countries to complete a circumnavigation of the globe. Amelia has been a passionate aviatrix since her first flight lesson at the age of twenty-one, a seeker of all things adventurous and is an accomplished public speaker, spending the last 8 years working as a television news anchor, covering breaking news, traffic and weather in Denver and Los Angeles. Amelia was given the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award in 2013 and in 2014 was named by the Jaycees as one of the “Top Ten Young Americans”.
