En: The city of lights was shining bright that morning. The streets of Paris were awakening, like a painting coming to life. Pierre, Sophie, and Camille were walking on the beautiful Champs-Élysées avenue. They all came from America, with a language that sounded quite different from the one spoken here. En: The Eiffel Tower was sparkling in the distance. The three friends were excited. They had been waiting for this trip for a long time. Between the majestic buildings and the blue sky, the enticing smell of croissants wafted in the air. They decided to stop at a small bakery on a picturesque alley. En: Pierre, dressed in his sweater with the American flag on it, stepped forward to place an order. For him, it was a mission of the utmost importance: his first croissant in France. En: With a shy smile, Pierre asked the baker, "A croissant, please." His American accent was so strong that the baker, an older man with a gray mustache, looked at him with a puzzled expression. He rubbed his forehead and squinted his eyes, as if lost in a maze of unfamiliar words. Pierre blushed and cleared his throat. The baker blinked, melting into a tender smile before bursting into laughter. "Ah, the Americans!" he muttered before handing Pierre the largest croissant they had ever seen. En: The trio sat at a table outside. The fresh Parisian air and the exquisite taste of the croissants left them completely satisfied. They were still laughing about the incident. Despite his initial embarrassment, Pierre felt happy. He was in Paris with his best friends, he had just eaten his first croissant, and he had made a Parisian baker smile with his American accent. En: The bakery incident reminded them of a simple but important truth; despite linguistic and cultural differences, goodwill and a smile can overcome any confusion. A beautiful day still awaited them in Paris, a story to tell upon their return to America. In our trip around the world this month, we land in Paris – home of great bread and snooty waiters. But we'll leave the topic of restaurants for another day.Today we will discuss how Napoleon's triumph measures up with that of Jesus Christ; whether residence and citizenship are synonymous concepts; why intense planning couldn't safe a thousand-year-old cathedral and won't save the Lord's church; and why the lights of Paris have been shining on me in the game room lately. Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. He is the host of the Citizen of Heaven podcast. You are encouraged to seek him and the Lakewoods Drive church through Facebook and other social media. Lakewoods Drive is an autonomous group of Christians dedicated to praising God, teaching the gospel to all who will hear, training Christians in righteousness, and serving our God and one another faithfully. We believe the Bible is God's word, that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, that heaven is our home, and that we have work to do here while we wait. Regular topics of discussion and conversation include: Christians, Jesus, obedience, faith, grace, baptism, New Testament, Old Testament, authority, gospel, fellowship, justice, mercy, faithfulness, forgiveness, Twenty Pages a Week, Bible reading, heaven, hell, virtues, character, denominations, submission, service, character, COVID-19, assembly, Lord's Supper, online, social media, YouTube, Facebook.

In the last episode, I talked about our visit to London - all the things we saw and did there. This episode is about our second leg and in my opinion, the best part of our trip - Paris!!! This city has been on my list to visit for so long, and to me, it was everything. That first view of the Eiffel tower, that breathtaking, incredible, marvelous, building.  First, the way we got there, a train. This train is special though. It took us from London to Paris below the English Channel between The United Kingdom and France. The train goes through an underwater tunnel called the Chunnel. When we arrived, we dropped our bags to our hotel, and headed to Montemartre. It is a hilltop village in Paris. It is really fun to walk around and hang out in. We took a funicular up to the Basilica of Sacré Coeur de Montmartre, simply known as Sacré-Cœur. It is a Roman Catholic church in Paris dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Around the chapel, you can get pretty awesome views of Paris.  It is famous for it's sunset views, but we only had a couple of days and we didn't stay for the sunset. Next time! Then, we walked back down into Montmartre, and got some delicious ice cream from a place called Bachir. Also, we got 2 really nice sandwiches on baguettes, REALLYYYY GOOD! The service was awesome, and ice cream was better. They cover your ice cream in pistachios to give it a nice pistachio flavor. Also, the ice cream itself was perfect.  I got some delicious macaroons from McDonalds as well! Can you believe it? Macaroons from McD? We hung around our hotel taking the views of the tower in, and then at 10 PM watched the light show. It was sooo pretty, but it only lasted for a  couple of minutes.   The next day, we went to the Arc de Triomph. It is a very famous monument commemorating French soldiers in many wars. We then walked through Champs-Elysees - a very impressive road that has many expensive stores and brands.  We then took a tour up the Eiffel tower. Definitely recommend having an hourish to spend at the gardens near the tower. The tour helped us gain some fun facts. We learned that there are 72  names of scientists listed on the borders of the tower.  Also, the tower was never meant to be permanent. It was only built by Gustave Eiffel for the 100 year anniversary of the French revolution at the 1889 world fair. When they decided to add equipment at the top to transmit wireless signals, it increased its life span. Today, it is also used for broadcasting and radio and TV shows.  Also, Gustave built a secret room at the top for him to go up when he wanted to be alone. The views of Paris were breathtaking. Amazing. We went up to the top, which is 1665 steps from the ground. Then, once again, we had some amazing ice cream. Instead of taking the elevators, we used the stairs. Be aware, there are a lot, 674.   Then river boat cruise on the river Seine. It was a perfect way to see a lot of things in Paris that we wouldn't get around to. We saw Notre Dame, the Louvre, and so much more beautiful architecture. We didn't go inside the Louvre because it requires lots of time, but there is always a next time! We ended that wonderful day with dinner by the tower and the light show again, at 10 PM. Let me just say the food there is delicious!!  The next day we were all tired from traveling so we decided to take a more relaxed day, and just slept in and walked around the park near our hotel. Near our hotel, was a replica of the Statue Of Liberty on the Seine river, so we took pictures around there as well.  Fun fact is that the next Olympic games are going to happen in Paris, and different sports are at different famous monuments. And the opening ceremony will be held on the Seine river. So, there was a lot of construction!  Have you been to Paris? What was your favorite part? Email me: RiyaRamblings@gmail.com, and you'll get a shoutout!

Paris is the city of lights, though whether that moniker refers to the intellectuals that have studied here from mediaeval times, the Enlightened thinkers of the 18th century or simply the street lights there is some debate. But, as with most things in Paris, their light obscures a dark past, so come with me as we head back to a different, darker Paris and discover her journey into the light.Follow me on instagram or go to my website for sources and pictures.Support the show on Patreon or leave a review, it makes my day and helps people find the show.or you can make a one off donation on PayPalArtwork Double MerrickMusic The Owl Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/panamepodcast. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is Cartesian Frames, Part 11: City of Lights, published by Alicorn. Sequence index: Living Luminously Previously in sequence: Highlights and Shadows Next in Sequence: Lampshading Pretending to be multiple agents is a useful way to represent your psychology and uncover hidden complexities. You may find your understanding of this post significantly improved if you read the sixth story from Seven Shiny Stories. When grappling with the complex web of traits and patterns that is you, you are reasonably likely to find yourself less than completely uniform. You might have several competing perspectives, possess the ability to code-switch between different styles of thought, or even believe outright contradictions. It's bound to make it harder to think about yourself when you find this kind of convolution. Unfortunately, we don't have the vocabulary or even the mental architecture to easily think of or describe ourselves (nor other people) as containing such multitudes. The closest we come in typical conversation more resembles descriptions of superficial, vague ambivalence ("I'm sorta happy about it, but kind of sad at the same time! Weird!") than the sort of deep-level muddle and conflict that can occupy a brain. The models of the human psyche that have come closest to approximating this mess are what I call "multi-agent models". (Note: I have no idea how what I am about to describe interacts with actual psychiatric conditions involving multiple personalities, voices in one's head, or other potentially similar-sounding phenomena. I describe multi-agent models as employed by psychiatrically singular persons.) Multi-agent models have been around for a long time: in Plato's Republic, he talks about appetite (itself imperfectly self-consistent), spirit, and reason, forming a tripartite soul. He discusses their functions as though each has its own agency and could perceive, desire, plan, and act given the chance (plus the possibility of one forcing down the other two to rule the soul unopposed). Not too far off in structure is the Freudian id/superego/ego model. The notion of the multi-agent self even appears in fiction (warning: TV Tropes). It appears to be a surprisingly prevalent and natural method for conceptualizing the complicated mind of the average human being. Of course, talking about it as something to do rather than as a way to push your psychological theories or your notion of the ideal city structure or a dramatization of a moral conflict makes you sound like an insane person. Bear with me - I have data on the usefulness of the practice from more than one outside source. Join Robert Child for a conversation with author Martin Dugard He is the #1 New York Times bestselling coauthor of the “Killing” series with Bill O'Reilly. On the show we discuss his new book, Taking Paris, set in WWII when Paris fell into German hands. As the Nazis ruthlessly crushed all opposition, a patriotic band of Parisians known as the Resistance secretly rose to fight back. But these young men and women could not do it alone. Over 120,000 Parisians died under German occupation. Countless more were tortured in the city's Gestapo prisons and sent to death camps. The longer the Nazis held the city, the greater the danger its citizens faced. Purchase this book and help support your local book store at the link below. In this episode we are having a wonderful chat with Pakistani expat Shehar Bano Rizvi (A name that James easily mispronounces.) who, at the time of this interview, has been living in Doha, Qatar for 13 years. Shehar is raising three children in her adopted home and shares how her little ones are adapting to a life that is constantly being in a mix of different languages, faces and cultures. Learn why Shehar sees this fact as a strong asset to her children's personal development. She goes into why she decided to not return to her high paced job in Doha to stay at home with her little ones. Also, hear how she and her husband are keeping their three young children connected with the culture and language of their home nation. Shehar wasn't always upbeat about her life in Qatar after spending most of her life in Karachi, Pakistan, also known as the City of Lights, until the age of 13. Listen to how, after coming to Qatar as a Certified Project Management Professional, homesickness crawled into her life. Take a peek at how she worked her way into and integrated into her overseas environment. Hear how she uses her extensive blog postings to express life as an expat mother raising young children. Find out who should be a candidate for the Urdu police. Adelaide is known as the City Of Lights, often seen twinkling under the stars. But somewhere between the city lights and the stars, there are more than 100 million pieces of space junk, floating above us. And our guest tonight puts more of her focus on the junk rather than the stars and the lights because she believes there is much to learn from and record about human history, culture and science in this expensive trash. Dr Alice Gorman from Flinders University is a Space Archaeologist and she'll take us on her 'dig' in space tonight.. Also this week, we introduce you to our new sponsor, dollarshaveclub.com. Remember, get your second month of shavers free when you use the code ADELDSC when ordering. In IS IT NEWS, Nigel tests us on the theme, Space. Max Martin from iNform Health and Fitness Solutions - Bone and Muscle Density Our SA Drink of the week is 2013 Gibson The Dirt Man Barossa Shiraz. In the Adelaide Visa Council, we have one defendant: a fellow media outlet. Music is Machine Moon by Mike Tilbrook. David Washington from In Daily has his Midweek News Wrap, Talk Of The Town.
