Episode 82: Rico Blasi. Rico grew up in the Toronto area in an Italian family that knew nothing of ice hockey. He got his introduction on the outdoor rinks in the GTA and this is where he first got the passion for hockey. He was lucky to be coached at a young age by the famous Stan Butler who taught Rico a lot about the game of hockey and different paths available. Rico would go on to attend D1 Miami of Ohio University on a hockey scholarship for 4 years, which was an up and coming program. After a few brief stops in pro hockey and coaching his old junior team, Rico would get a chance at the University of Denver as an Assistant Coach for 4 seasons. In 1999, Rico's old university was in search of a new Head Coach and Rico thought he should just put his name in for the sake of it. Turns out it was a great idea as Rico was hired and would spend the next 20 seasons as Head Coach of Miami of Ohio. Over this time he helped shape the program and would help them achieve 2 Frozen Four appearances as well as NCAA Runner Up in 2009. This long run also saw Rico win multiple coaching awards including NCAA Coach of the Year in 2006. During Covid, Nate Leaman from Providence University would reach out to Rico about an opening as the Director of Administration for the college. This was a new challenge for Rico that he knew nothing about but he is happy he did it as he was able to continue to grow his resume and network in NCAA. In 21/22, new D1 school, University of St. Thomas would come knocking with interest in Rico to be their new Head Coach, where he has been ever since. We talked about the process of building a new D1 program, some of the rules I wasn't aware of, as well as some other interesting facts about the school that not many people would know. It is awesome to see someone from the GTA thriving in college hockey and I am happy Rico was able to share some time with me. Hope you enjoy!

Today on the podcast is one of the youngest, most successful coaches in the NCAA, Coach Ian Moini. Entering his fourth season coaching the Tar Heels, Moini has helped turn the program into one of the best distance running programs in the country, finishing fifth in the Program of the Year rankings by the USTFCCCA. He has directly coached four Tar Heels to 10 individual ACC championships. His tenure has also featured team success, such as the Tar Heels winning their first ACC Cross Country Championship since 1985 and their first ACC Indoor Championship since 1996, while achieving their best finish, 5th place, at the NCAA Indoor Championships since 1973. Moini has been a part of rewriting history, with six current school distance records being set since his arrival in Chapel Hill. Eight of the top 10 outdoor 5,000m performers have been coached by Moini in the past three years. In his third year at Chapel Hill, Moini coached Parker Wolfe to become North Carolina's first 5,000m national champion at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championship. Ian Moini joined the UNC track and field and cross country coaching staff prior to the 2021-22 season. He works primarily with the Tar Heel men's and women's distance runners. In 2022, he was helped sign the No. 5-ranked men's distance recruiting class in the nation. Moini is a 2021 UNC graduate with a bachelor's degree in education and a minor in coaching education. He was a member of the varsity cross country and track teams at Carolina. He utilized his last semester of college to volunteer coach at Eastern Michigan University in 2021. While there, he worked with the men's and women's distance runners. The men's team won the Indoor MAC Championship and Baldvin Magnusson placed seventh in the 3000m at the NCAA Indoor Championships. In today's conversation, we go into Ian's journey as a coach and as a successful athlete himself to get to this point. We dive into his years as a coach and the lessons he's learned along the way! In this week's episode, Stephanie interviews special guest James Kennedy to talk about what it means to really let go and take a leap of faith when making significant life choices. He ought to know about having faith --- in addition to being an outdoor enthusiast, he is also an Emergency 1st Responder, NCAA Coach, and Professional Rock-Climbing Instructor to name a few... In this eye-opening conversation, James shares about his decision to take the path less traveled - and a leap of faith when he and his wife decided to build a tiny house (300 square feet!) in the mountains to raise their 2 kids. Be sure to watch the video as he gives us a tour! James talks about what it really means to let go and face our fears in order to follow the beat of our own drum. He shares many "gold nuggets" of wisdom that include feeling the fear and doing it anyway. His approach to life is refreshing - he demonstrates what it means to walk in faith and focus on things we can control, rather than things we can't. Perhaps what Stephanie loves most about James is his ability to hold space for others to let go, be themselves, and discover what path works for them. When she met him a few weeks ago he was leading an outdoor adventure that put her face to face with a fear of heights + letting go -- when she jumped off a platform 50 feet from the ground in the middle of the woods. The whole time, Stephanie was literally shaking with fear and he allowed her to feel the discomfort -- to "stew in the soup" so to speak. James didn't force her to make the jump -- or make her feel bad about her choice if she decided not to. He accepted her fear and even the possibility that she wanted to back out. Stephanie ended up making the jump -- one of the most terrifying experiences of her life. His ability to create safe space and also let her "be" was powerful. It was a reminder that whether we are jumping off a platform, or walking into a room of strangers, we all face fear. Accepting fear is part of life. It's what we do with the fear -- let it stop us -- or use it to move us forward - that gives life meaning. No matter what you are facing in life - you will want to tune into this inspiring episode! It's rich and enlightening in the best way. To connect with James, you can reach him at: jken0606@gmail.com or on IG @mrfitjc

In 18 seasons (383-118, .764) Everist has led the Golden Bears to the pinnacle of the sport on three occasions, most recently a stirring 11-8 overtime win over USC in 2016 to give his alma mater its NCAA-record 14th national title. Everist also directed the Bears to an 8-6 win over USC in the 2007 title game and a thrilling 7-6 last-second national championship victory over the Trojans in 2006.A three-time All-American, 1988 NCAA Player of the Year and two-time United States Olympian, Everist earned 2002 MPSF Coach of the Year honors in his inaugural season when he guided Cal to the MPSF Tournament title and a national runner-up finish. Then in 2004, he was inducted into both the Cal Athletic and the USA Water Polo Halls of Fame. In 2006, Everist was selected USA Water Polo’s Elite Co-Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to both the MPSF and NCAA titles. He also coached the United States’ World University Games team that competed in the summer of 2009 in Belgrade, Serbia, mentoring five Bears on the squad. On July 29, 2002 Everist returned to his alma mater and immediately led the Bears to a 20-7 mark and Cal’s first MPSF title and national runner-up finish since 1995. After guiding the Bears to the school’s first back-to-back NCAA trophies since the early ‘90s with wins in 2006 and 2007, Everist again guided the Bears to the top of the sport in 2016 when an overtime win over UCLA moved Cal into the national title match. There, Cal rallied from a late deficit to force overtime and the Bears took over in the extra periods to beat the Trojans. Finishing with a 23-4 record, Cal’s historic season earned Everist his second National Coach of the Year award (2006) from the ACWPC.With all of his team’s accomplishments in the pool, Everist has also fostered excellence in the classroom. In September, 2009 his team was awarded the 2008-09 Newmark Award for the most improved cumulative team GPA among all of the Cal 27 sports. The team earned that award again in the fall of 2018, this time from a group of 30 sports. Before his successful return to Berkeley, Everist had contributed to eight CIF North Coast championships as an assistant coach at Miramonte High School. During Everist’s 11-year tenure at Miramonte, the school also produced nine league titles and three third-place finishes in the California State Tournament. He helped develop 22 high school All-Americans, and three of his former players went on to earn NCAA All-American recognition, while two of his ex-pupils played on NCAA championship teams. In addition to his work at Miramonte, Everist served as water polo commissioner at San Francisco’s Olympic Club from 1999-2001, a period that produced a gold medal and two silver medals in FINA World Masters competition. Also, since 2000 he has been co-head coach for the Lamorinda water polo team, leading that club to the 2001, 2004 and 2005 USA Water Polo 20-Under national championships, and the 2002 Northern California Zone Junior Olympic title. In January of 2005, Everist added to his duties the position of treasurer of the College Water Polo Coaches Association.A 1990 Cal graduate, Everist propelled the Bears to national championships in 1987 and 1988 as a player. He earned NCAA All-American status from 1986-88 and was named the NCAA National Player of the Year in 1988. Everist went on to play for the United States National Team for nine years (1988-96) and was a member of the USA Olympic Team at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Games. He also competed on America’s gold medal winning water polo teams at the 1991 World University Games and 1995 Pan American Games.“Kirk has been an Olympian and an All-American, but I believe he is now a better coach than he was as a player,” said four-time NCAA Coach of the Year Pete Cutino, Everist’s former Cal mentor who passed away in September of 2004. “He is a very intense person who has always been a student of the game. He was a engineering graduate and MVP and all-league swimmer and water polo player at UC Davis. After a stint as a 1st Lieutenant and US Army Airborne-Ranger, he returned to UCLA for a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology. While at UCLA he became a graduate assistant coach under the legendary coach Bob Horn; and the school won the first ever NCAA Championship ever held in 1969. From there he went on to Occidental College, where he transformed a water polo program that had been the league doormat, into league champions in both swimming and water polo. After coaching at Oxy for 4 years, he went on to UC Santa Barbara and turned the water polo program around; again producing a league champion team and a NCAA top-four finish in just three years time.It was at Stanford University though, that Dettamanti came into his own as a winning coach. In 25 years at Stanford, his teams played in the NCAA Championship final game a total of 14 times, producing eight NCAA Championships and six second-place finishes. He became only the second collegiate coach in NCAA history to record over 600 career wins, and the only collegiate coach to win NCAA Championships in four different decades, the 70’s, 80’s 90’s, and 2000’s. His eight National championships ties the NCAA record for the most in NCAA history, along with the legendary Pete Cutino of Cal-Berkeley. NCAA records include a .800 winning percentage at Stanford, a 52 game undefeated streak over a three year period in the 80’s, and two undefeated seasons (28-0 in 1981 and 36-0 in 1985).He has been named League “Coach of the Year” ten times and NCAA “Coach of the Year” six different times. Dettamanti has also had great success at the International level. He coached the USA World University Games teams to Gold and Silver medals in 1979 and 1981; the highest finish ever for a USA National team. Dettamanti gained valuable International coaching experience as the Assistant National Team Coach at the 1990 FINA Cup and at the 1991 FINA World Championships under Olympic Coach Bill Barnett; and as an USA assistant at the 2001 World Championships, under the top International coach in the world, Ratko Rudic.Dettamanti has not only produced winning teams, but also top international players. Fourteen of his players have gone on to play for the USA Olympic Team, including Olympic team standouts Jody Campbell (1980, 84, 88), Wolf Wigo (1996, 2000, 2004) and Tony Azevedo (2000, 2004, 2008). Several of his players have gone on to become successful coaches at the high school and college levels; and several have gone on to become nationally ranked referees as well. Dettamanti is an excellent athlete in his own right. He was one of the original pioneers in the sport of triathlon, placing 6th overall in the prestigious Hawaii Ironman in 1981, along with competing in many other marathons and triathlons during the early 80’s when the sport was just getting off the ground.

#02 Episode with Courtney Banghart Overview DEC 14, 2017 Badass Quotes: “I coach players who want to be great; they think they can be. “Fear hinders progress in every way. We have all been paralyzed by fear. Been driven by consequences versus going toward the goal.” “Comfortable is not living. Life is supposed to have edges.” “Bravery is everywhere, it’s just masked under uncertainty.” Podcast Intro: Courtney Banghart was a superstar athlete, an Ivy League grad - she went to Dartmouth and majored in Neuroscience. She had no idea or intention that she would play basketball in college much less become one the brightest coaching stars in the college game today. She is intense. She is quick and I swear she talks in sound bites, which must be the biggest part of the reason her players are so pumped to play for her. She is both down-to-earth and otherworldly, clearly in what she would call her zone of genius. She shifts the energy of the room when she walks into it and you know, this is no ordinary woman. Official Bio: Helping to guide Princeton to unprecedented heights, the 2015 Naismith National Coach of the Year, and named one of Fortune Magazine’s 50 Greatest Leaders, Courtney Banghart will be in her 11th season as head coach of the women’s basketball team in 2017-18. The winningest coach in program history, Banghart has amassed a 208-87 (0.705) overall record with a 113-27 (0.807) mark against Ivy League opponents. Dave Pietramala is widely regarded as the greatest defenseman in lacrosse history. As a member of the U.S. National Hall of Fame, he’s the only person to have won an NCAA national championship as both a player and coach, and the only person to be named both the NCAA player and coach of the year. Incredible. Pietramala – "Coach Petro" – recruited me to play under him at Johns Hopkins University in 2005, where we competed in three NCAA national championships, and winning two. Coach taught me how to work hard, compete, be humble, and respectful. He always harped on “the little things” – like keeping a clean locker room, hustling in between reps, being the first in line, and making eye contact. Each of these learned tactics translate into professional sports, business, and relationships. On the show, we take a drive down memory lane, revisiting learning moments and major adjustments from my freshman year in college. I was fortunate to step onto the field with one of the best senior classes our sport has ever seen, and one that completed an undefeated season, going 16-0. Coach Petro shares with us his origin story, why he chose to play at Johns Hopkins, and what the one-on-one battles were like with our sport’s greatest player, Gary Gait. In 1990, Pietramala’s coaching career began, taking his first coaching gig as an assistant coach for Gilman high school. From there, he earned a part-time collegiate assistant coaching position that paid him $3,000. To supplement his lower wage, Pietramala worked at an aluminum extrusion factory from 6am to 2pm. His subsequent coaching positions took him through the University of Pennsylvania, Loyola College, and Cornell, where he was named the NCAA Coach of the Year. In 2001, Pietramala took the head coaching position at his alma mater, where he’s helped revitalize the Hopkins program. He’s won two national championships, been to seven Final Fours, sixteen NCAA tournaments, and winner of the 2015 Big 10 conference championship. Other topics from our conversation include: - What makes a high performance competitor - The importance of feedback - Pietramala’s biggest regret - Recruiting: what Pietramala is looking for in a young lacrosse player - I teach him how to use Twitter Enjoy the show.
