My guest today is Lucas Miller; it's his second time on the show; please look up his earlier episode. I highly recommend it. We met over a year ago in Zurich, where I shared with a small group of investors what I learned about my life, investing process, and work in general during the unusual pandemic years. We bonded right away since Lucas told me that my lessons rhyme with what he is studying and researching as a cognitive neuroscientist and human performance researcher at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, where he is the youngest faculty member. At Berkeley, Lucas teaches MBA students and is best known for his course called "Becoming Superhuman: The Science of Productivity and Performance". Since COVID began, Lucas has given over 600 talks and keynotes to financial institutions, private equity firms, and investment funds on how to optimize their workflow and enhance creative thinking. He's been featured in Forbes, Wired, and the Wall Street Journal Few might now, that when Lucas was 21, he published his first book on the science of successful learning and getting work done. He wrote most of the book during a summer off in Nepal, and, of all places, the book became most popular not in America, but in Hong Kong! I'm including a link to a free digital copy in the notes to episode: bit.ly/beyondbrilliance Today, we discuss the aim of artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate human intelligence, its evolution with large language models like ChatGPT, and its ability to generate answers and summaries from vast amounts of data, despite occasional inconsistencies and hallucinations. Lucas shares that outsourcing lower-level thinking to AI tools allows humans to focus on higher-level tasks and ask better quality questions, emphasizing the need to verify AI-generated information and ensure accuracy and reliability. My guest tells me to avoid overconfidence in AI and to maintain human judgment in decision-making. We explore how AI can automate low-impact tasks, augment human work, and transform industries, noting that the speed of AI adoption and improvement is faster than previous technological revolutions. We highlight that AI can enhance human capabilities and elevate work, but certain tasks will always require human involvement. We talk about the impact of AI on different fields and tasks, which will require individuals to adapt and find new ways to add value. Lucas shares insights on how the brain evolved to help humans survive and reproduce, not to optimize and make rational decisions, leading to errors in thinking and judgment due to its limited capacity and finite processing power. My guest tells me that AI cannot replace human qualities such as trust, empathy, creativity, and moral judgment. Stay tuned until the end, when you will hear how success for AI in the next 50 years would look like. Hello everyone, and thank you for tuning in. This episode is a bit different. This is an interview I gave in late August 2023. The host is Hraday Jhala, a 15 year old investing enthusiast based in Singapore. I had a rare opportunity to read an early copy of his book the Worldly Wisdom. Please keep an eye out for it, when it comes out. I recently wrote an essay called, a letter to a younger self, where I share what I would tell my younger self – you can look it up on my substack. Talking to Hraday felt a lot like talking to a younger myself. It's a longer interview, save it, listen over time or in one sitting, it's a really special conversation, as you are about to see. I share some stories you might have heard elsewhere in the podcast, but many are new, and different, especially around discovering the stock market as a teenager, I share my experience being a podcast host as well. I also talk about some of the lessons I learned from a number of guests on my podcast, including Lucas Miller, and Daniel Crosby – on the topic of how brain work, how our behavior can get us in trouble investing. I discuss my self-imposed selective ignorance in the way I collect information, and filter a lot out. I share with Hraday the importance of the right work environment for an investor. We talk about early investing mistakes, and dangers of bankruptcies. I share my crisis investing, pandemic era experience, which I write about in my recent book – Crisis Investing. We have a lively conversation about envy. I bring up Guy Spier, William Green, and other guests from my podcast. I mention the importance of spending your attention, and time well. I explain how I think our childhood, and upbringing might have a big bearing on how we think of money, and investing, I share some examples from my podcast, Talking Billions. We talk about the variety of market participants, and a variety of stocks available to buy. We also chat about Berkshire Hathaway, Buffett, and Omaha. As investors, we keep looking for new advantages. A better use of our brain, a great gift that we already have, might be a very intriguing path worth pursuing. My guest today has incredibly insightful advice for all of us. Lucas Miller is a cognitive neuroscientist, author, and human performance researcher, as well as the youngest faculty at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business. At Berkeley, Lucas teaches MBA students and is best known for his course called "Becoming Superhuman: The Science of Productivity and Performance". He also co-runs the Becoming Superhuman Lab, which conducts research on how to help busy leaders and their teams get their most important done, in less time, with less stress. We talk about: the mismatch between modern work habits and our brain's natural inclinations, why early rising isn't suitable for everyone, insights on long-term brain health, emphasizing the importance of sleep, regular sun exposure, and the power of meditation. https://www.becomingsuperhuman.science/ Show notes / references below (with specific timestamps). 6'34'' -- Lucas's book on Amazon - Beyond Brilliance: The Blueprint for Learning Anything: https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Brilliance-Blueprint-Learning-Anything/dp/1540421236 8'15'' -- Becoming Superhuman MBA course at UC Berkeley: https://newsroom.haas.berkeley.edu/classified-becoming-superhuman-course-teaches-the-science-of-productivity-performance-and-wellness/ Lucas' training and consulting company Becoming Superhuman: https://www.becomingsuperhuman.science/ 17'59'' -- The impact of the ‘open' workspace on human collaboration (Bernstein, 2018): https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rstb.2017.0239 20'18'' -- Stanford researchers identify four causes for ‘Zoom fatigue' and their simple fixes: https://news.stanford.edu/2021/02/23/four-causes-zoom-fatigue-solutions/ 25'01'' -- Brain Brain: The Mere Presence of One's Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity (Ward, 2017): https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10.1086/691462 44'00'' -- Discover Your Chronotype: www.mychronotype.com Use code “TALKINGBILLIONS” (to bypass the paywall and access the assessment for free) 1:18'39'' -- Meditation experience is associated with increased cortical thickness (Lazar, 2005): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1361002/ Enhanced brain connectivity in long-term meditation practitioners (Luders, 2015): https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1053811911006008 Stress reduction correlates with structural changes in the amygdala (Hölzel, 2010): https://academic.oup.com/scan/article/5/1/11/1728269?login=false ---- Crisis Investing: 100 Essays - My new book. So after dinner the boys dived head long into side 2. Some say it's better than Dark Side of the Moon & sparked rumours of it inspiring McCartney to release “Flaming Pie”. We'll let you decide
Back in 1997 Craig & Stuart thought it would be a good idea to spend the day recording their first ever album. Very much like the Beatles first album, it was recorded in 1 day! Curtains were closed, the tea flowed & what came out is considered by some to be the greatest album in history & kicked off “Coolbritania”

This is important because you can greatly increase the velocity of your wealth generation, the more money you have available to invest.- Lucas most recently has been focused on wholesale and JV deals. If you do at least 2 to 3 transactions per month he could potentially be interested in partnering with you on a deal.- It is common for many multifamily syndication investors to also flip single family houses on the side. However, it's less common for them to flip land. Regardless of the land flipping, Lucas still prioritizes his multifamily investments above all else to ensure that his investors' capital is well managed.- The number one fear that people have about investing money is losing money. However, most people don't think twice about investing in Tesla stock or Bitcoin. When it comes to real estate investments, typically the investor just needs to be educated that real estate is actually a relatively safer investment, and explain the advantages and disadvantages to educate away the fear.

Welcome to the Fear Free Passive Investing podcast! Today, Lucas Miller is joined by David Robinson, as they share different thoughts on selecting sponsors. David shares that normally he would prefer to be sponsored by someone that is a local on the specific market that he's looking into and is actually a very important aspect for him as well. David also explains that regardless of the other details of the area of investment he's looking to pursue, his first choice is always to look for a good operator. David further shares that he also prioritizes looking for someone who's got a growing track record, and not someone who's already accomplished and is just enjoying what they've already built. These are only some of the points that David will share in this episode so be sure to stay tuned! About David Robinson: David Robinson, CEO and Founder of Canovo Capital, is an active investor, broker, and podcast host. What's going on everybody!? Welcome back to Cashflow 2 Freedom. Due to the huge amount of interest in the real estate investing episodes we've published, we decided to keep the real estate flowing. Which is why I'm excited to bring on our guest today, Lucas Miller. Lucas initially went to school for and started a bustling career in politics. Finding that the world of politics wasn't where he wanted to be, like so many of us, he turned to real estate. Also like so many of us real estate investors, Lucas's first deal was a house hack. Lucas shares the details of that first deal, where he's at today, and how he got there through real estate investing. We also touch on a topic that we're huge on here at Cashflow 2 Freedom - finding and working with a mentor to fast track your way to your goals. Even with mentors, it's not always rainbows and sunshine. Lucas shares a particular deal that went bad that lost him and an investor $50,000. He shares why that deal went bad, what he took away from it, and the steps he took to make things right with his investor to maintain a working relationship. We also talk finding deals, broker relationships, flipping, and the exact criteria he's using to find and close deals. Keep up with Lucas - on his podcast Fear Free Passive investing - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fear-free-passive-investing/id1456823201 Thanks everybody, we'll see you next time. AJ

“You have to be willing to put up with the crud now so you that you can reap the rewards later on.” Lucas Miller (10:13-10:21) Join the Small Audience Big Profits Challenge Most people know that I have built a multi-six figure company while working part time, but did you know that I did all of it with an audience of less than 500 people?! With the right method, you don't need to reach the thousands (and tens of thousands) recommended by the gurus to make a huge impact, and build the lifestyle you want. The average conversion rate from email subscriber to client is 1-2%. Mine is 10%. If you are a service-based business owner looking to increase your conversion rate, join the Small Audience Big Profits 30 day challenge beginning August 14th. I want to share my secrets with you! Now, back to your regularly scheduled article. Growing Your Side Hustle Into a Business Individuals often start out with a side hustle while doing something else that takes up the majority of their time, such as working a 9-5 job, or being a full-time mom. They progress to freelancing, then to outsourcing, and finally to running their own full-blown business. Having gone through this progression himself, Lucas Miller, founder of Echelon Copy, recently wrote an article for Entrepreneur.com titled, 4 Reasons Why Your Side Hustle Won't Magically Morph into a Scaled Business. He wanted to show his readers how to take their side hustle to something larger, more meaningful, and quite a bit more lucrative. The 4 Reasons Why Your Side Hustle Won't Magically Morph Into a Scaled Business Building a business means doing things that don't immediately pay off. In order to actually build a business and not just a side hustle, you need to take a long-term approach and recognize that delayed gratification is part of the process. People tend to know that certain activities are important for a business, but chalk them up to things that only Fortune 500 companies do. While activities like SEO optimization, branding, content creation, PR, and social media take quite a bit of time, effort, diligence, and discipline, you need to do them from the beginning and be consistent in doing them. “Expect delayed gratification. Go into building a business with the expectation that this is not going to turn out tomorrow. When we can say that, it becomes a lot easier.” -Janelle Lara (10:52-11:11) Most side hustlers have multiple side hustles. If you have a side hustle that you're passionate about and you know that you can grow it, you need to focus on just that thing. People often mention that millionaires have, on average, seven to eight different streams of income. But most people don't realize that millionaires start out with just one building it to the point that it's running like clockwork before they move on to building another. Entrepreneurs often struggle with shiny object syndrome when they need to be focusing on their bread and butter. You'll almost always hit the target you were aiming for. You are the one who sets the limits on what's possible. When entrepreneurs or side hustlers live in comfort, there's no room for growth. When you become comfortable with being uncomfortable, you raise the ceiling and give yourself room to grow and expand. If you expand your limits, the natural by-product of that mentality is that you'll work tirelessly to get what you want. You can't be the horse, carriage, and driver. Independent contractors are the lifeblood of entrepreneurship. If you're going to transition your side hustle into a full-fledged business, you'll have to bring others on board. You can't do everything yourself. When you're doing one million different things, you won't have the capacity to do ANY of them to the best of your ability. “When you can afford to have somebody else take care of some of your responsibilities, your happiness will increase because you'll get your life back.” -Lucas Miller (38:48-39:01) Back to those millionaires who have multiple streams of income- they've gotten to that point because they've perfected their process so they can outsource it. Meanwhile, they start working on another new income stream. Focus your efforts on your current business. Then find others to join your team. Your business can't magically be scaled overnight. However, make the effort to build your business wisely, and you WILL have the ability to build a business that supports your dreams, while giving you the freedom you desire!
