Woniya Dawn Thibeault, winner of Alone: Frozen, author of Never Alone: A Solo Arctic Survival Journey In 2019, primitive skills instructor and master hide-tanner Woniya Dawn Thibeault was selected for the Alone Season Six challenge. She and nine other contestants were dropped off along the East Arm of the Great Slave Lake, in Canada's Northwest Territories, in late fall, with the arctic winter closing in. It was a grim and unforgiving landscape unlike anything she'd ever encountered or even imagined. Her life there became a slow-moving race with starvation and brutal cold, fishing, eating grubs and running snares, perfecting her shelter and learning, learning, to listen to the earth for whatever it might offer her. Thibeault survived 73 days, becoming the second-to-last contestant, drawing on every reserve of tenacity and skill to meet the challenges of each day. Gaunt, near physical collapse and fifty pounds lighter, she tapped out and returned home to California. Her convalescence took months, and she re-entered her life an entirely changed person. And then she did it again. ____ Enter the MeatEater Experience Sweepstakes: https://go.bhafundraising.org/meateatersweeps24/Campaign/Details
This site hosts audio only. To see the video of this special episode, please go to, https://youtu.be/8NdUlrhpjHkMarie is an internationally exhibited painter. Her oil paintings address the tension of urban landscape and the natural world. Inspired by frequent walks through various trails and open spaces in California, her work reveals her observations of the changes and dynamics of nature in the face of the ongoing climate crisis. Engaging notions of abstraction, her work references the surrounding landscape using atmospheric color shifts, fragmented imagery and multiple viewpoints to suggest the ideas of flux, change and instability in the environment. Marie taught painting and color theory at CSULB for 30 years, where she developed an Advanced Studies in Color class.June is a recipient of the COLA Fellowship, the Guggenheim and the California Community Foundation, Fellowship for Visual Artists. June uses abstract painting to explore how color, repetition, movement, and balance can serve as conduits to spiritual contemplation and interpersonal connection to her African-American roots. Exploring the psychological construct of skin color or tone through pattern and abstract painting has proven to be a revealing gesture and these ideas are explored in her two ongoing series: the Energy Wheel Paintings inspired by her meditation practice and her Flag Paintings, which explore the alignment of multiple identities such as race, nationality, gender, or political leanings. June's public art works include a Venetian glass mosaic at the Metro Pacific Station in Long Beach Influences: Marie has two main influences: first, the New York abstract school where her formalist abstract artist teachers were students of the pivotal figure in Abstract Expressionism, Hans Hoffman. That experience that has always remained with her. Second, were her teachers Elmer Bishoff and Joan Brown at Berkeley, members of the "second generation" of the Bay Area Figurative Movement. Marie always loved the California painting of Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud and the landscape expanse.June's influences include Varnette Honeywood, Romare Beardon, Jacob Lawrence, Charles White, David Hockney and Alma Thomas. Another influence was the 1976 LACMA show ‘Two Centuries of Black American Art.' These works had a profound, formative impact upon June. Other inspiration/explorations have drawn from cultural and African American historical references, sacred geometry and very recently, the Benin emblem of the river leaf.Find more information at: www.mariethibeault.com and www.luisdejesus.com/artists/june-edm

On this episode I am once again chatting with my friend and colleague Woniya Thibeault. This episode contains spoilers for the television series ALONE, of which Woniya has been a contestant on twice. If you haven't watched season 6 or Alone Frozen, I recommend doing so before listening. Woniya came in second place on ALONE season 6, and more recently won half a million dollars when she came in first place on Alone Frozen. Both times she brought a rewilding, relational perspective to her experience and to the public. However, when creating a show there is always a lot that ends up being edited out. To increase awareness for her journey and to teach the public more lessons that didn't make it onto the show, Woniya wrote a book titled “Never Alone” about her experience on Season 6 of the show. Woniya has always been someone who has inspired me through her dedication and passion for living in a way that is more connected to our ecologies. In this conversation we talk about her new book, her experiences, survival challenges, and more. Woniya Dawn Thibeault never felt at home in the modern world. An awkward only child and once-upon-a-time vegan, she was always drawn to the natural world and wild places. By age 19, she was throwing herself into studying not only nature but also the skills our ancestors used to thrive there. Before long, she was living off-grid, foraging for food, picking up road-killed deer, and wearing their skins for clothing. Even so, she was shocked when The HISTORY Channel's hit survival TV show Alone came calling and invited her to be a participant on Season 6. In her debut memoir NEVER ALONE: A Solo Arctic Survival Journey (Timeless Ways, June 13, 2023, ISBN: 978-1-960303-00-4; Hardcover), Woniya shares how months of starving by herself in the Arctic wilderness brought more healing than suffering, and led to a deep sense of belonging and peace. Her story affirms the incredible strength of the human spirit and shows us that strength comes in many surprising forms. NEVER ALONE's message is one of inspiration and learning to trust in ourselves and the land around us-embracing the wild and being wholly and beautifully human, flaws and all. Also, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the native people on whose homeland the adventure took place. "I wanted to do Alone for the experience. I also wanted to do it well, even win it," Woniya writes. "It felt important to me to represent a whole different approach to wilderness survival, because the images we usually see are of big strong men, most often with military training, with knives the size of their forearms strapped to their thighs and a pack full of fancy tactical gadgets. I wanted to show the world that living in the wild doesn't have to be about battling nature. For me, it's all about knowing that I'm part of nature and am humbly willing to learn about and participate in it."

I have some follow-up thoughts on the 1985 murder of Francine Da Sylva, but in order to get there, I need to revisit two other unsolved murders we've covered: the 1979 death of Nicole Gaudreault and the 1975 strangulation and incineration of Diane Thibeault. Solving for x involves bringing an unknown variable to one side, then seeing how other elements line up with that variable - that's what we're going to do here – move and reconsider some variables.https://johnallore.substack.com/

Immigrants innovate. Kendall Square in Cambridge or Silicon Valley wouldn't be what they are today without the innovation and ingenuity of immigrants. But the dense and convoluted immigration system doesn't always allow for that retention of skill and talent. This week on JobMakers, Host Denzil Mohammed talks with Jeff Goldman, immigration attorney and Chair of Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker's Advisory Council on Immigrants and Refugees, about how best to ensure that highly skilled and innovative immigrants can remain in the U.S., start companies, and create jobs for Americans. Jeff co-founded the Massachusetts Global Entrepreneur in Residence program for immigrant university students to continue learning, teaching, and innovating. Jeff sees how much skilled immigrants add to our economic vibrancy and innovative edge, and he's also keenly aware of the tremendous impact on our daily lives of undocumented immigrant workers and what Massachusetts has done to enable them to thrive.Guest:Jeff Goldman practices exclusively in the areas of business and family immigration law. He has more than two decades of extensive experience representing startup to Fortune 1000 technology, life science and medical device companies, as well as families, in all visa and permanent residency matters. Jeff is passionate about entrepreneurship, families and the innovation economy. After over a decade leading the immigration law sections at Mintz Levin and Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, Jeff opened his own practice in Salem and Cambridge, Massachusetts and San Mateo, California.
What happens to the mind when a person is alone, freezing and starving to death? Woniya Thibeault tells us that, for her, it was one of the most sublime moments imaginable. She demonstrated to herself and the world that her fierce connection with nature fed her when her body should have failed. As a contestant in the Netflix series 'Alone', Woniya took everything she had gained throughout her lifetime in nature and staked what she calls her 'surthrival' on it. She asked herself "What if the challenge to live in some of the harshest conditions on earth could be about finding joy in each moment?" Singing with the birds, honoring the sun and speaking to the animals and rocks, she says that all of life thrives on relationship and connection. This is a beautiful message for those who have been suffering from loss of connection with one another and/or nature because the "cure" is only one sunrise or breath away.
