Wow. As we get ready to enjoy a holiday weekend with our loved ones, the Orlando Pride have given us so much more to be thankful for this year. The Pride went to Kansas City, withstood a furious challenge from the Washington Spirit, played their usual solid defense, and captured a 1-0 win in the 2024 NWSL Championship. If the Kansas City Current and their fans thought the Pride celebrated on their field back in July, they hadn't seen anything yet. We discuss the Pride's win over Washington, the valiant fight the other team showed, the controversy before the game's only goal, some of the remarks the Spirit made in the aftermath, and much more. We checked back on our score predictions and made our selections for Player of the Match. After our match rewind, we opened up our mailbagbox, which was busting at the seams. Much of that came from one extremely enthusiastic listener, but we're not mad about it. We may have to break up a block of questions that big across multiple episodes in the future, but we were in a celebratory mood and answered each one. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We'd also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we'll find them easily and read them on the show. After the mailbagbox, we discussed Megan Montefusco and Celia closing their careers as champions, got a quick word from Mark Wilf, the Pride's owner and chairman, and hit the high points of the team's celebration in front of City Hall in downtown Orlando on Monday. This episode is a long one, so buckle up. Listen to it in smaller chunks if it helps. Here's how Episode 71 went down: 0:45 – Orlando didn't play its best (and credit much of that to Washington), but the Pride got their moment of Barbra Banda brilliance and won their first NWSL Championship. 29:39 – The mailbagbox is ridiculously full this week. 1:19:09 – Pride retirements, highlights from the Pride's victory parade and celebration, a word from owner/chairman Mark Wilf, and more.
President-elect Trump's Treasury Secretary pick Scott Bessent prompted a positive market reaction as the last few cabinet roles are filled. Sports team owner Mark Wilf had a big weekend, scoring a trifecta of wins for his teams: Orlando Pride, Orlando City, and the Minnesota Vikings. He discusses the Pride's first NWSL championship victory and his return on investment in women's sports. Plus, Wicked and Gladiator II made a splash at the box office this weekend, Novak Djokovic names long-time tennis rival Andy Murray as his new coach, and the Squawk anchors talk gift ideas heading into the holidays. The Vikings made it clear in no uncertain terms and actions that Mike Zimmer and his old-school defensive coaching style were the problem the past two years and that Kevin O'Connell, a 37-year-old first-time head coach, brings from the Super Bowl-champion Rams a new-school offensive approach that finally will make Kirk Cousins more than just a vastly overpriced .500 quarterback. "I certainly believe even moreso now that we've got our leadership in place," co-owner Mark Wilf says. "We're going to work with Kirk as our quarterback … and for 2022, for sure, we're going to be super competitive." The Vikings tinkered with the idea of trading Cousins and doing a total teardown. But O'Connell's offensive acumen and history with Cousins in Washington convinced ownership and new general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to extend Cousins' contract, lowering his salary cap hit from $45 million to $31 million, as the first of many moves designed to run it back with much of the same roster. Perhaps Adofo-Mensah, the NFL's first general manager from a purely analytics background, coined a new term when he described the process as a "competitive rebuild." Sans Zimmer, of course.

Tonight on In The Huddle, Jason Brown and Nick Olson will discuss what feels like the “Same Old Same Old” in the land of the Minnesota Vikings. NFL Free Agency is upon us and the new league starts Wednesday. The only transactions from the new Vikings front office look like the old Vikings front office. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was billed as the forward-thinking analytics guy that would apply a new direction and way of thinking, but that hasn't happened yet. They sign a perennial practice squad guy, extend Kirk Cousins even though teams were interested, let their best guard walk, talk about bringing back Kirk's security blanket to back him up, agree to deal with the third interior defensive lineman in three years, cut another one, and agreed to add a 30 linebacker. Where's the new forward-thinking? The reset? Anything? Could Andrew Miller, the Vikings COO in conjunction with Mark Wilf be sabotaging any potential progress before it even starts? Inquiring minds want to know. Join the conversation! Agenda: - Moves Re-signed IDL T.Y. McGill Extend QB Kirk Cousins Tender K Greg Joseph Agreed to sign IDL Harrison Phillips Cut IDL Michael Pierce Reports of a desire to re-sign Sean Mannion Agreed to sign LB Jordan Hicks - Kirk extension - Phillips for Pierce swap - Why does it feel like they're running back the same strategy as the old regime? Your Minnesota Vikings are two days from the hoopla at Egan welcoming Kevin O'Connell as their new head coach. He spoke well at his opening press conference and we look forward as a fanbase to the good times ahead. “Now, get to work!” yelled the crusty old sergeant. The staff is coming together and player evaluations starting in the run-up to free agency, and there will be the NFL Combine to attend. Hopefully, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and coach O'Connell will do better than Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer at identifying the right talent and developing it. It will be key to building the competitive team that we and Mark Wilf want. The question will be, will they? Then our deep thoughts and deep dive into the position groups take us to the tight ends. How will Kevin use them? Are there any clues from his past? Irv Smith Jr will be back after a season-ending injury, and Tyler Conklin will probably walk for starter money somewhere else in the league. What does that leave the team with? We'll dig into it. Vikings co-owner Mark Wilf said he wouldn't box himself into a candidate for GM or head coach, and the team has since made one of the NFL's most unconventional front office hires in former Browns VP of Football Operations Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Tyler Forness joins Dave to talk about the Minnesota Vikings' search for a new General Manager. As we know, on Black Monday of this week, Zygi and Mark Wilf fired Rick Spielman as GM. Rick had been with the team since 2006 and GM since 2012. His job status and that of head coach Mike Zimmer were linked. Until 2018, the team was on the rise, but after that, it struggled with only one playoff appearance. Decisions on signing Kirk Cousins played into it, along with the perceived inability to get enough quality starters out of the draft. Throw in some failures at certain positions and some panic trades that didn't pan out as envisioned, made for it being time for a new GM. The Wilf's have assembled a committee to find the next one. It has been reported that out of all the names seen early in the week, the next move is to interview a group of 8 external candidates that have been vetted. We'll call this stage of the GM search, the big 8. The big 8 group includes Eliot Wolf - Patriots, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Glenn Cook both from the Browns, Brandon Brown and Catherine Raiche both from the Eagles, Monti Ossenfort - Titans, Ryan Poles - Chiefs, and John Spytek - Buccaneers. Tyler has an interesting theory on the pairs from the same team. Also, look at who has possible future coach connections. Who do you like? Fan with us!!! Introduction: Host Michael Rand takes a break for several minutes from Vikings talk to dive into the Timberwolves' 128-125 loss to the Pelicans on Tuesday. It ended a four-game winning streak and kept the Wolves from getting over .500 at the midpoint of the season (20-21), and in the aftermath Karl-Anthony Towns talked about how players can't let love from the media get to their heads. Um, what? The narrative around this team is one of improvement, for sure, but has anyone really said they have arrived? Hear audio clips from Towns, Anthony Edwards and Patrick Beverley. 8:00: Star Tribune columnist Chip Scoggins joins the show to dissect what Rand deems the five most important things said about the Vikings in the last few days. Quotes from Eric Kendricks, Brian O'Neill, Mark Wilf, Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman (the last two being official statements) shed light on individuals and the team going forward. 30:00: Scoggins thinks Kirk Cousins will be traded in the offseason, which is a good reason to remember that a new coach for the Vikings has tended to mean a QB gets drafted right away.
Matthew Coller and Brian Murphy talk about Eric Kendricks' blunt comments about Mike Zimmer, saying that he was not sure about his relationship with the Vikings former coach and talking about how the organization can't be "fear-based." Kendricks' comments are nothing new. We have heard for years about Zimmer alienating players and people within the organization. Beyond that, Murphy reacts to Mark Wilf's talk of collaboration and what's next at GM and coach. Learn more about your ad choices. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and Vikings owner Mark Wilf explain why they're now looking for coaches and we hear from both. Would you want to be a coach who gets to take over a complete rebuild or be expected to win from the start? Greg and Fred go back and forth on what is the best option for an incoming head coach.

Vikings Happy Hour is here to enjoy some Vikes football talk and a beverage or three. The Minnesota Vikings traveled across the border to play the Green Bay Packers, and it was an abysmal failure. It is the culmination of the poor decisions made by Mike Zimmer, Rick Spielman, and the entire organization. More change will be coming with Zygi and Mark Wilf already getting their ducks in a row, be it for GM and HC, in their candidate search. They'll need to get the Vikings back to being a regular playoff team and hopefully an organization known for excellence. Before that, there is the formality of having to host a game vs the Chicago Bears. If this season hasn't been frustrating enough, fear ill-advised decisions ahead. Maybe not though. We're here to talk it all through with you, the fan, so grab your favorite beverage and join the conversation! Discussion topics tonight: Intro No show in GB Is this Zim's final game? Did Mike Zimmer throw Kellen Mond under the bus at his post-game press conference? Mike was asked if he would like to see Kellen Mond play next week vs the Chicago Bears. His answer was, “Not particularly.” Then when asked why, he responded with, “I see him every day.” Zimmer is known for blatant honesty at times, and for a coach in a business known for football lies, that can be refreshing. Was this too fay though? Could have Zimmer just said that Mond isn't ready and leave it at that? We that Mike was emotional last night after that embarrassing and humiliating loss to the Green Bay Packers, but is this the type of organizational leadership to display to the public? Only Zygi and Mark Wilf know for sure, but to the rest of us, this is just another example of why the Mike Zimmer [and whole football operations cadre] is coming to an end. Jayson Brown joined Producer Dave to discuss this issue briefly in a new segment that Climbing The Pocket is airing out, called Vikings Daily SITREP. The goal is to aggregate what is happening with the team we want to love and improve your situational awareness. Fan with us!!!
