How can your brewery make the most out of the holidays? More than just slinging stout on St. Patrick's Day, or a festbier during Oktoberfest, there are ways to create a welcoming vibe that will get people coming back year after year and can establish your brewery as a hospitable spot. One person who has been working to crack the code is Sam McNulty. He has developed and operates seven restaurants and breweries on West 25th Street in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland's Near West Side. Three of these concepts are brewpubs of vastly different scale: One a nano brewery where experimental beers are concocted, while another is a brewpub restaurant with close to five hundred seats, and in 2016 he rebuilt a 43,000 square foot warehouse that dates back to the 1800s and launched a full-scale production brewery sending Market Garden Brewery beers out across Northeast and Central Ohio.He has lived largely car-free in Ohio City for the past 20+ years. And one of his guiding investment principles is to nest his businesses within a 15-minute bicycle ride from the Market Garden Brewery. As one of his former professors once said: “Sam is a beer entrepreneur fermenting the rise of a post-industrial frontier with opportunity galore. Sam is building on the Pride of Cleveland.”The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 63  is sponsored by:FermentisHow can you make your beer stand out? There might not be one magic answer, but one thing is certain: yeast plays a pivotal role in shaping your beer's unique character. This week I travel to Market Garden Brewery in Cleveland, Ohio. My guests were Sam McNulty and Patrick Daniels. Sam is the owner of the Market Garden Brewery and Pat is the director of brewing at MGB. We discussed the inception of the Market Garden Brewery located in the Ohio City area of Cleveland, Ohio. We also talked extensively about water chemistry, brewing processes, brewery expansion, and what breweries need to do to set themselves apart from a rapidly growing craft beer market, not just in Ohio, but across the country. The beers we sampled during the interview were a Czech Pilsner, Hefeweizen, IPA, and freshly canned 3-hour old Hazy IPA. All of which were delicious. Jenika works with diverse clients including Cleveland's most beloved brands — Mitchell's Ice Cream, Market Garden Brewery, Church and State, Fount, and Océanne to name just a few. Designing for independent artists, small boutiques, businesses, and editorial clients, all with a playful, clean, and elegant approach. JENIKA enjoys being outdoors, traveling, exploring new food adventures, and pretending like she's a wannabe iron chef! Celebrating Filipino family faves like “pancit” (rice noodles served on birthdays promising long life) and “Kamayan” (traditional Filipino feasts eaten by hand on a tropical bed of banana leaves), we dive deep into her family's remarkable resilience. From early morning trips to the Filipino open markets for her family's catering gigs to Jenika's own courageous journey emigrating to Parma as an #OtherBrownGirl teen coming-of-age after being raised by her grandparents in the Philippines, listen in to hear her inspiring advice to her 14-year-old younger self and younger nieces. “As a child, I was always in the kitchen, whether it was with my grandma or mom. I learned that there are many bridges that are built when it comes to food. Now, I also get to create those bridges and relationships through food.” In 2017, JENIKA GONZALES organized a Lumpia Po pop-up raising $6,000 to help her siblings immigrate to America. Delivering homemade Filipino eggrolls - a.k.a “Lumpia” - made with love along with delightful Bento of Joy boxes for the holidays, Jenika's passion for food, family, and friends inspires us all. I am one with you. I see you, I feel your hurt, your anger, your frustrations. Our stories are complex, but they are beautiful. There's something to be proud of…” Tune in as we dish on design, identity, generational storytelling, and Filipino-American AAPI culture. (S4, EP 2). Khmer-American author Loung Ung joined me for this episode. She is best known for her international best-seller First, They Killed My Father. She recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of her debut book which chronicled her survival as a young child during the Khmer Rouge genocide from 1975-1979. This book would later be turned into a Netflix film in 2017 that Angelina Jolie would direct. In this interview, she shared her reflections writing this book, and how this has aided in her healing from her childhood trauma from the genocide, and her relationship with Cambodia in her visits since the book. She reminisced on her time working with Angelina and her son Maddox on the film, and their friendship together. You can follow Loung's work at https://www.loungung.com and her Twitter @UngLoung. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Season 4 is sponsored by Red Scarf Revolution (RSR). RSR aims to bring awareness to the tragedies, atrocities and cultural destruction that the Cambodian people endured from 1975 to 1979 under the communist Khmer Rouge regime and how that period impacts us today. With that awareness, Red Scarf Revolution advocates the silenced art, music, culture, and language, with designs that incite the resiliency of the Cambodian people. Visit their website at www.redscarfrevolution.com to check out their merch line and to learn more about their work, or follow their Instagram at red_scarf_revolution or on their Facebook. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bio: LOUNG UNG is a bestselling author, activist, and co-screenplay writer of First They Killed My Father, a critically acclaimed 2017 Netflix Original Movie directed by Angelina Jolie based on her memoir. Born in 1970 into a large, middle-class family in Phnom Penh, Loung was five years old when the Khmer Rouge took power in Cambodia. Four years later, in one of the bloodiest genocides of the 20th century, an estimated 2 million died under the regime. Among the victims were Loung's parents, two sisters, and 20 other relatives. In 1980, Loung, her older brother Meng and his wife, Eang, relocated as refugees to America. In her first memoir, the national best-seller First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, Loung tells the story of her survival in Cambodia's Killing Fields. Her second book, Lucky Child, details her life as a refugee in Vermont and her sister Chou's as a displaced person in Cambodia. In her third book, Lulu in the Sky, Loung chronicles her 1995 return to Cambodia as an activist to ban landmines, and her reunion with the family she left behind. Since then, she has made over forty trips back to Cambodia. Today, she has shared her messages of resilience, healing, civic service, activism, and leadership across the world. She has spoken at schools, universities, and organizations. Loung is a contributing writer for the groundbreaking film Girl Rising, which profiles nine girls from nine countries, including Cambodia, who are struggling against odds to achieve an education. She has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Boston Globe, among others. When not writing or traveling, Loung can be found at Market Garden Brewery, one of three microbreweries she co-owns in Ohio City, Ohio. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/banhmichronicles/support

It’s the sweet sixteen episode of Living Off THE LAND! So let’s cut to the chase -- this episode is bittersweet. We have some really excited news, and some sad news. The good news is we will have a website with written content very soon. Jordan is working this weekend with our friend Mike on setting that up. We’ll also soon have business cards to distribute...more on that soon. Now for the sad news: our food expert and chef member, Paul, will be leaving the podcast after this episode. There is no bad beef or hard feelings; this is simply a decision Paul made in response to some other projects he’s working on in his life. We’ll all certainly miss him, but he also expects to be a guest in future episodes. After these announcements, we hop into the never-ending spiral that is the LeBron free agency talk. So many things come into play to determine where he goes: What happens with Kawhii? Are the Cavs’ still in on Kemba? Is there any possibility for Boogie Cousins? Collin Sexton’s role...the list goes on and on. We try to make sense of the chaos and we make our predictions if he’s staying or going. Once the dust from the LeBron talk settles, we move onto the Tribe, who are heating up after a 7-game win streak. Kipnis is hot again, we got Beiber fever, and how about J-Ram? Could he be an AL MVP candidate? Next up is our restaurant and bar reviews. We tackle the ever-growing Market Garden Brewery in Ohio City, with it’s awesome Cleveland Guardian’s logo and their delicious brews. Do they have one of the best beers of all time? Check in to find out. Next we briefly discuss an upscale joint in Lakewood that has a 5-star patio. But is it worth your time? For pizza, Dan gives us the scoop on Fat Bob’s Pizza -- which just might have one of the better crusts in The Land. We wrap things up with event previews of World Cup watch parties at Old Angle Tavern, a free Jazz Festival (http://www.tri-c.edu/jazzfest/index.html), Fairview Park Summerfest (https://fairviewsummerfest.com/) and a roundup of the best Independence Day firework shows.
