Also, after a trying violin lesson with Professor LeBlanc, Jack faces a tax audit which requires a trip to the IRS to explain some of his more mysterious deductions. Performing live in our virtual Zoom studio, our coast-to-coast cast and crew once again capture the sound of the Benny show right down to the studio audience. Tune in and join in the laughter! The comparable Dennis Day was born Owen Patrick Eugene McNulty, who grew up in the Bronx area of New York City. He first started singing with Larry Clinton for network radio programs which were then aimed at a collegiate audience and often broadcast from a college campus. Gene McNulty, as he was then known, came to the attention of Mary Livingston, who was then married to Jack Benny, and upon hearing Gene for the first time, she took his recording to Benny, who then flew to New York to audition the young man. Dennis Day was soon brought on-board to the Jack Benny Show, replacing Benny's tenor, Kenny Baker. He would remain on the Jack Benny Show until Jack Benny's death in 1974. In 1944, as so many of his contemporaries did, Dennis Day served in the armed forces, in the United States Navy until 1946, when he returned to his civilian life and returning to the Jack Benny Show, while performing in his Own show, A Day in the Life of Dennis Day, where he played the same character he portrayed on the Benny show. On this episode of the Afternoon Radio Theater Sundae, Pepsi-Mama brings you Dennis Day's second attempt at his own show, The Dennis Day Show, or the RCA Victor Show, where Day portrayed an older fictionalized version of his Jack Benny character, using his actual voice and behaving more maturely then he did on the Jack Benny Show. The Jack Benny Program starred Jack Benny and ran on either radio or TV for more than three decades, earning Emmys for more years than not. Jack played one role throughout- as a minimally talented violinist and penny pincher who was always the butt of jokes. His wife, Mary Livingston, was his constant companion on the shows as well as Rochester, his wise-cracking butler. Jacks actual skills with the violin were demonstrated a number of times with guest appearances with symphonies. A synopsis of the play is given in the introduction.... It is a very good story, but what makes it very special is that it stars Jack Benny and his real life spouse, Mary Livingston. (Photo 1938). Jack and Mary did not do a lot of programs outside his LOOOONG career on radio and television... but they were his shows. Agreeing to star in a Lux Radio Theatre and one Suspense episode was a big deal for Jack and Mary, but also drew a huge audience and lots of sponsor money for NBC. This track will live in the "Comedy" playlist on Soundcloud.com... where the podcast originated.

A marriage had been agreed between Mary and Francis, the Dauphin, so Mary was going to be brought up at the French court. Mary travelled with her maids of honour, the Four Marys, or the Queen's Maries: Mary Fleming, Mary Beaton, Mary Seton and Mary Livingston. Best Old Time Radio Podcast with Bob Bro Monday, July 20, 2020 - OTR Comedies The Jack Benny Show - "Dinner at the Colman's" When Jack receives a dinner invitation from Ronald and Benita Colman, he is quick to attend. The problem is, the invite was not meant for him. This hilarious episode introduced the Colmans, Benny's very proper nextdoor neighbors. The joke is that Ronald Colman is horrified by the things he sees going on next door, but is too much the proper gentleman to say anything. Except to his long suffering wife, Benita. This hilarious episode will help you understand why the Colmans became series regulars. Featuring: Jack Benny, Ronald Colman, Benita Hume (Mrs. Colman), Mary Livingston, Dennis Day, Phil Harris, Don Wilson, Rochester. Original Broadcast Date: 12/9/45 on NBC.
Jack invites the whole gang to his "Christmas Open House" where they will exchange gifts, get kisses under the mistletoe, see Santa come down the chimney or, maybe not? This show was broadcast live on NBC 81 years ago, yet it still is a lot of fun to listen to. Mary Livingston, Jack's real-life wife (Photo Jack and Mary) greet Kenny Baker (singer... who later is replaced by Dennis Day), Don Wilson, the announcer, members of the Phil Harris band (and Phil), and of course Eddie "Rochester" Anderson all meet at Jack's house for this very special Christmas Day program on Christmas Day 1938. This track is in my "Christmas" and "Comedy" Playlists. Enjoy.
This week we have Mary and Phil together on Dinah Shores show!

March 31, 1940 - The Jello Program starring Jack Benny! Jack was also on Orson Wells' program that week in a mostly dramatic play called "June Moon". But most of the show is a spoof of Walt Disney's Pinocchio which came out the previous month, February 1940. The Blue Fairy was played by a woman Jack almost married, Mary Kelly. On December 3rd, 1950 Mary Livingston fluffed her straight line near the end of a live radio broadcast of the Jack Benny Show. Being caught for weed nowadays means being caught by the police for possession of an illegal drug such as cannabis. But in the Ireland of the 20th century weeds of a more innocent variety could land a farmer or landowner in court. The Noxious Weeds Act of 1936 was constituted to deal with the problems caused by noxious invaders such as ragwort, thistle and dock. The Act allowed for any person responsible for land on which noxious weeds were growing to be fined upon conviction. This programme entitled “The Blight of the Buachallan Bui” was commissioned by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland under its Sound and Vision Scheme. Contributors to the 40 minute programme recall how members of the Garda Siochana used to patrol the highways and byways of rural Ireland on bicycles peering across stonewalls and hedgerows to detect breaches of the regulation. Among the contributors to the programme is retired vet Charlie Lydon from Westport who says there was good reason for the strong regulation as ragwort was potentially deadly for cows and horses. Horticulturist Matt Shaw from Castlebar explains that sheep were immune to the toxic effects of ragwort. Other contributors to the programme include retired gardai John Duggan and John Kelly and retired Judge Bernard Brennan as well as Margaret Maloney, Ann Healy and Mary Ruane (all from Foxford Active Retirement Group), Paddy Cannon, John Moran, Aeneas Noonan, Michael Boyle, Senator John Carty, Sean Nixon, Mary Livingston, Johnny Mee, Mattie Gilligan, Henry Jordan, Vincent Troy, Joe Byrne, Geraldine Hynes of Teagasc and Garda Sergeant Martin Murphy (Castlebar). The series is presented by Teresa O’Malley and co-produced by Teresa and Liamy MacNally with technical assistance from Ronan Courell.
