This podcast episode features a deep discussion on the impact of feminism within the church and society, highlighting how the traditional roles of men and women have been challenged over the decades. Zach Garris, author of "Honor Thy Fathers" and "Masculine Christianity" emphasizes the importance of adhering to the teachings of the Reformation, specifically regarding male headship and the roles assigned to women in the home, church, and commonwealth. Through an exploration of historical figures like John Knox and William Gouge, the conversation underscores the dangers of deviating from these foundational principles, which can lead to a feminization of the church and society. The episode also critiques contemporary leaders, including Tim Keller and his wife, for their narrow complementarian stance and the implications of their teachings on church practices today. Listeners are encouraged to consider the historical context of these discussions and the potential for reforming modern practices to align more closely with traditional Christian teachings.Takeaways: Garris argues that the church has been slow to address feminist ideologies effectively. Evidence from history shows that traditional gender roles have been upheld by Reformers. Tim Keller's approach to gender roles has been criticized for being too lenient on feminism. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding historical Christian perspectives on gender. Author and Pastor Zachary Garris talks about the problem of the feminization of the Evangelical Church and the need to recover the masculine nature of Biblical Christianity. We discuss some compromises of Complementarianism, how feminism crept into the church and how God's design for the sexes extends beyond just the home and church. Complementarianism, which started off as a movement with good intentions to preserve the distinction of gender roles in response to Evangelical Feminism in the 1980s fell short in many ways of the older, more Biblical understanding of Patriarchy. We also tease out some of the related problems with Radical Two Kingdoms Theology (R2K) and how it may be symptomatic or a contributing cause of the feminization of the church. Lastly, we touch on some issues of cultural engagement and political theory. Buy the book -

Zachary Garris is here this week with a critique of "practical egalitarianism" found even in some of the most popular evangelical defenders of masculinity and Biblical marriage. Article Discussed: The Leaven of Egalitarianism - American Reformer by Zachary Garris In Episode 36 of The American Reformer Podcast, Josh Abbotoy, Timon Cline, and Zachary Garris Timon review Nancy Pearcey's latest book, "The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes." They delve into the concept of practical egalitarianism, critiquing Pearcey's redefinition of male headship and her views on gender roles. The conversation touches on the Industrial Revolution and its impact on family dynamics, the importance of fathers being actively present in their children's lives, and the role of technology in shaping these dynamics. Listen in for a fresh perspective on gender roles, masculinity, and a practical theology of male headship. #ZacharyGarris #Masculinity #Christianity #ToxicMasculinity #Bible #Truth #Marriage #Egalitarianism #Marriage Zachary Garris serves as pastor of Bryce Avenue Presbyterian Church (PCA) in White Rock, New Mexico. Thanks for listening! Masculine Christianity by Zach Garris
Join us as we sit down with Zachary Garris author of "Masculine Christianity" and ask: Should wives always submit to their husbands (what if he is a pagan? What if he's a lazy gamer)? Can women at least Pray in Church (or must they always remain silent)? Can a woman be a professor (or is she really to have no teaching authority over a man)? Can a woman Tweet out an admonishment? What is the connection between universal suffrage, feminism and being trans.? All this and more... The Western church has gone feminist. God has given men authority in the home, church, and society. Yet the church has rebelled against God's design and embraced the unbelieving world's teaching that women should take on the same roles and duties as men rather than focus on the home and children. Christian scholarship and Bible commentaries are dominated by feminist arguments that both husband and wife should submit to each other (“mutual submission”), that women may be pastors and preach sermons to men, and that the Apostle Paul's teaching on men and women was limited to Greco-Roman culture and has been transcended by our unity in Christ.Sadly, the conservative response to feminism—complementarianism—compromised several historic Christian teachings and has thus given feminism an even stronger foothold in the church. Many complementarians fail to root gender roles in the differing natures of men and women. As a result, they have refused to apply the Bible's teaching about men and women beyond the home and church, leading to the embrace of women in civil office and military combat. In addition, the vast majority of complementarians have adopted the novel interpretation of 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 (“the women should keep silent in the churches”) that Paul only prohibited women from evaluating prophecy, which has opened the door to women preaching and teaching men in the church. The result is that the Western church has become effeminate and weak. Pastors are afraid to teach important Bible passages on the roles and duties of men and women, and it is no surprise that young Christian women are trading babies for careers outside the home and that churches are regularly capitulating to subversions of biblical sexual ethics. What the church needs is to recover its masculine calling, where men embrace their God-given authority—and responsibility—in the home, church, and society. This book affirms the historic Christian teaching on men and women, critiques feminist scholarship, and urges complementarians to hold a more robust and consistent position. This is a call to return to the Bible's teaching on men and women. This is a call to Masculine Christianity..

This Sunday we finish our series on Biblical Gender Roles. We have seen how gender roles apply in homes and churches, but to keep ourselves consistent with what scripture teaches, we must extend its application to the civil sphere and beyond as well. God has designed the world a certain way. Gods word, logic, reasoning, mathematics, etc. are all used in God's world. They help guide us and are used in every walk of life. Thus, is it no different for gender roles, they apply in all scenarios. Thanks for listening and enjoy! Key Texts: Isaiah 3:12; Deuteronomy 22:5; Nahum 3:13 My guest joining me this week on the Sunday series is my brother Bryce. Bryce is getting his undergraduate degree in philosophy and hopes to get his MDiv. from a seminary after he completes his undergrad. He hopes to be a pastor shepherding Gods people one day. This Wonky Wednesday I interview author, attorney, writer, and follower of Christ Zach Garris. Zach holds a Master of Divinity from RTS (Jackson) and a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School. He has written for Chronicles Magazine, the Mises Institute, and Desiring God. He edited a book call "Dabney on Fire", writes at KnowingScripture.com and manages another website TeachDiligently.com. He wrote the book "Masculine Christianity" which is what the interview is over. In this interview, we walk through the book to get a few big picture points that Christians ought to consider moving forward in America. Feminism, Egalitarianism, Complementarianism, and Biblical Patriarchy are just a few topics in this episode. Biblical roles of men and women are always rooted in the creation order and not some cultural norm. Enjoy the episode and thanks so much for listening! This time we have another guest on the show. Zach Garris, Author of “Masculine Christianity” and Editor of “Dabney on Fire: A Theology of Parenting, Education, Feminism, and Government” joins us to talk patriarchy, feminism, and the influence intersectionality, feminism, and intersectional feminism has had in the culture from the days of the early "women's movement" of the 1800s. Its creep into the interpretation of text and general softness growing in the broader evangelical church, even into confessionally reformed denominations. As Dabney so eloquently put it regarding the Bible's clear teaching on men and women. "Let every one make up his mind honestly either to reject the Bible as a fable, and thus preserve his Jacobin (protocommunist/marxist) humanitarianism, or frankly to surrender the latter in order to retain the gospel." No wonder Aimee keeps giving the Bird to R L Dabney Confused about complementarianism and egalitarianism? The intellectuals at Wikipedia state simply: “Complementarians assign primary headship roles to men and support roles to women based on their interpretation of certain biblical passages. One of the precepts of complementarianism is that while women may assist in the decision-making process, the ultimate authority for the decision is the purview of the man in marriage, courtship, and in the polity of churches subscribing to this view. The main contrasting viewpoint is egalitarianism, which maintains that positions of authority and responsibility in marriage and religion should be equally available to females as well as males.” Weak sauce has withered into “nice” and “soft” sauce in many churches. Publishers, Theologians, and Churches are collapsing into affirmation of (or silence on) "thin complementarianism" by Egalitarian critiques hiding with Beth Moore and her acolytes in Presbyterian and Reformed Denominations behind the accusation of abuse. While abuse is wrong in all circumstances, it does not negate the right use of father rule or male headship. In fact, a good Christian patriarchy would crush this abuse resolutely rather quickly. Speaking of abuse, the irony of the ideology of egalitarianism (and its doting spawn, feminism) is that egalitarianism via socialism/communism/humanist atheism murdered in the neighborhood of 100 million for the sake of “equality.” It was also the ideological source of the guillotine for 14,000 people in France. That's not abuse of an ideology, that's just its standard operating procedure once in full swing. It is always wise to consider the source of ideas like egalitarianism and patriarchy, by using what's referred to as Ad Fontes "to the sources." The new "thin" or “narrow complementarianism” is the fruit of far too many churchmen being afraid to stand firm for something simple- father rule in the home, and the role of Elder and Deacon limited to men. This used to be called, simply and biblically, Patriarchy. Then emerged complementarianism as the cowed evangelical response to the cultural climate, now currently splitting at the metaphysical seams. To put it simply. Christian Patriarchy is good. Feminism and Egalitarianism are... bad. Let's talk Masculine Christianity Looking for more from Zach? In this episode, host Zachary Groff interviews author Zachary Garris -MDiv, Reformed Theological Seminary- JD, Wayne State University- on his latest book, Masculine Christianity -Zion Press, 2020-. Tune in as the ZGs discuss the book, its usefulness, and its call to return to the Bible's teaching on men and women.--Please note- In answering the first question about the content of the book, Mr. Garris draws from the opening chapter of his book to make an historical point about women's suffrage being an expression of individualism in American political life. Mr. Groff echoes this historical observation. Neither man makes a proscriptive or ethical point regarding women's suffrage. Rather, Mr. Garris and Mr. Groff make the same historical point observed by historians of the American nineteenth and twentieth centuries that with the advent of women's suffrage in the United States of America, political life was no longer organized by voting households, but rather organized by voting individuals.
