Recorded a week and a half after David Lynch's death, this episode is a mishmash of interviews with Cinema of the Dam'd programmers Jen Bronson and Matt Cornell and clips of what we showed during our 15 hour twitch marathon. We spoke about our Lynch faves, what he means to us, and where our head was at after watching so much of his work at once (it was pretty divine). Lynch's death hit hard and this won't be the last time I feature him on Somebody's Watching.Show Notes:Cinema of the Dam'dJennifer's Bronson's InstagramMatt Cornell's InstagramThe Squid and the Whale (2005)The Straight Story (1999)Blue Velvet (1986)Blue Velvet edited for televisionTwin Peaks (1990-1991, 2017)Mulholland Drive (2001)Lost Highway (1997)Eraserhead (1977)Inland Empire (2006)Hotel Room (1993)Crash (1996)Pink Flamingos (1972)Swingers (1996)John WatersDavid Wants to Fly (2010)Angelo Badalamenti on Laura Palmer's themeFollow Somebody's Watching here:Twitter: @somebodyspodInstagram: @somebodyswatchingpodEmail: somebodywatchingpod@gmail.com

We're dropping this episode a bit before March—a dreamtime month for many THR readers and podcast listeners. March is on the cusp here in the Northern Hemisphere of longer days. All that translates into more time to move through the mountains—often with warmer temps and more stable avalanche conditions. This episode is handy if you need a little push to get the wheels turning, dream, be inspired, or push yourself out of your comfort zone.Let's get to it.On the Emergence Episode, we chat with Sam Hennessey, Michael Gardner, and Adam Fabrikant. We'll provide links below if you are unfamiliar with any of these three folks. If you follow the podcast, Adam has been on before. And yes, he still shines. For Sam and Mike, this is a first.Emergence. The podcast's title, which we vacillated on, is spot on. According to the Wiki, "emergence occurs when a complex entity has properties or behaviors that its parts do not have on their own, and emerge only when they interact in a wider whole."In this instance, the wider whole can be the group construct: three experienced individuals bringing their strengths and weaknesses to an endeavor and exceeding, in a unique way, the attributes of any individual. The wider whole also includes a vast physical landscape full of possibilities, including technical and endurance challenges, pitfalls that include high-gravity situations, and the potential for interpersonal conflict. We mostly focus on an excellent 2021 adventure by Hennessey, Gardner, and Fabrikant. Here are the basics of their mega-push: a climb of Denali's Cassin Ridge, a first ski descent of the mountain's Northwest Buttress, and an exit on foot across the tundra to Wonder Lake. Beyond the slog across Denali National Park's lowlands, this episode also features some fine ski alpinism done in good style. The good style we speak of also translates to the group at large. What makes these three individuals compelling is not simply their questing in the mountains but the real sense that Hennessey, Gardner, and Fabrikant care deeply about one another. That, folks, is a huge ingredient for any successful endeavor, which also gifts smiles and laughter.Let's set the ski alpinism scene. In 2019, Hennessey and Gardner climbed the Infinite Spur on Sultana (Mount Foraker) in ski boots with skis secured to their packs on a 48-hour trip. Yes, they descended on skis. The first ascent, a storied one at that, was completed by Michael Kennedy and George Lowe back in 1977 over 11 days. Then, in 2021, Hennessey and Gardner climbed a new route on the Isis Face of Denali's South Buttress in their impeccable ski alpinism style. Climb in ski boots with skis along for the ride and ski as much of the descent as possible, ultimately bringing them to the Kahiltna Glacier, the main jumping-off point for the main Denali ascent route. The two took a few rest days, then climbed a highly technical route on the North Buttress of Begguya (Mount Hunter) to the summit—this time sans skis and ski boots. As rest and recovery, Hennessey and Gardner guided the West Buttress route on Denali, as did Fabrikant. From there, the plan to climb the Cassin as a trio and make a first ski descent down the mountain's Northwest Buttress was hatched. After their respective guiding obligations, Hennessey, Gardner, and Fabrikant climbed the Cassin, skied the Northwest Buttress down to tundra, and walked out to Wonder Lake, where they snagged a bus ride back to Talkeetna. Resources—Mike Gardner wrote an excellent summary of their season, which listeners/readers can find here.—Hennesey's piece in the American Alpine Journal titled "Ski Seasons: Modern Ski Alpinism in the Alaska Range" is here.—To learn more about Hennessey and Gardner's fast and light ethos in technical ground, here is a collection of stories/podcasts on their speedy ascent, along with Rob Smith, up Denali's Slovak Direct.Slovak Direct PodcastFast times on Slovak DirectSingle Push on Denali's Slovak Direct—this podcast features Matt Cornell, Steve House, and Rob Smith (not Hennessey or Gardner). It is an excellent discussion of the history of the route and the evolving strategies used to ascend the line. Thanks for listening. Find us at the-high-route.com. Yeah, there are two hyphens for redundancy, which is a good policy in the mountains. For weight weenies, hyphens weigh next to nothing. We are a reader supported website with free podcasts. On October 12, climbers Matt Cornell, Jackson Marvell and Alan Rousseau summited 7,710-meter Jannu, or Khumbakarna, by a new route up the north face, climbed in alpine style. Jannu's main north face had only been climbed once, in 2004, by a 12-man Russian team that spent nearly two months on the face and fixed over 10,000 feet of rope. The American trio carried a single lead rope and took only a modest rack and no bolt kit. Their route, Round Trip Ticket, was climbed and descended in one week. Years of preparation and innovation went into this remarkable ascent, and in this episode of the Cutting Edge, we're fortunate to hear all three climbers telling the story. The Cutting Edge is presented by Hilleberg the Tentmaker, with additional support from Bivouac Coffee and Blue Ice. This podcast is produced by the American Alpine Club.
The Cutting Edge returns for season five with Jackson Marvell, a 27-year-old alpinist from Utah who just completed his second new route up the mile-high east face of Mt. Dickey in Alaska's Ruth Gorge. Along with Matt Cornell and Alan Rousseau, Jackson climbed the AI6 M6 X route, Aim for the Bushes, over three days in late March. The AAJ's Michael Levy spoke with Jackson to get all the details.
One has toured with Taylor Swift, has 12 x Golden Guitars and 11 x CMC awards to his name; the other is a 5 x Golden Guitar nominee and has played bass with some of Australia's most revered acts. Combined they share over 50 million streams and today, Adam Brand and Matt Cornell join forces to deliver the rousing new single, ‘Our Church'. Since departing the Baby Animals over a decade ago for a gig with Adam Brand, Matt Cornell has walked the path of country music. The pair quickly became thick as thieves. When a global pandemic threatened to demolish that path, their comradery gave them resilience. “Before ‘Our Church' was a song, it was our weekly catch up with a couple of my close brothers during covid,” recalls Brand. Both being ‘foodies' who frequently share their culinary skills with social media fans, it was only natural to host the catch ups at cafés all over QLDs Gold Coast. “We found it was helping us deal with the mental anguish of our industry being on its knees, the work & money we had lost. In particular, I was really struggling,” adds Cornell. “But I found solace in my mates, in our little catch up every week. I'm not a religious man, but I decided to call it Church.TOUR DATES – ADAM BRAND Saturday 25th February – Mathinna Country Club – Mathinna, TAS Saturday 4th March – Country by the Bay Festival – Frankston, VIC Saturday 25th March – Rodeo 4 Life - Wollongong, NSW Saturday 22nd April – Gippsland Country Music Festival – Gippsland, VIC Sunday 30th April – Lighthouse Country - Burnett Heads, QLD Friday 14th – Sunday 16th July – Country on Keppel - Keppel Island, QLD** Tickets are on sale now and available via https://adambrandmusic.com/tour-dates/ TOUR DATES – MATT CORNELL Saturday 11th March – The Stock Route Country Music Festival – Dubbo, NSW Saturday 10th June – Lets Wing It Festival – Scone, NSW Friday 14th – Sunday 16th July – Country on Keppel - Keppel Island, QLD Saturday 5th – Saturday 12th August – Tunes in the Tropics - Fiji** Tickets are on sale now and available via http://www.mattcornellmusic.com.au/ Creating a community that empowers men to create direction for their life through strengthening mental & physical fitness.Get in touch in the comments below or head to...Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lachlanstuart/YouTube:https://youtube.com/@lachlanstuart91Website:https://themanthatcanproject.com/Do Something Today To Be Better For Tomorrow

With only about a dozen ascents in nearly four decades, the Slovak Direct route on Denali's south face is one of North America's premier climbs. Sixteen years after the first ascent, Scott Backes, Steve House, and Mark Twight famously upped the ante by climbing the route in single-push style: bringing no tent or sleeping bags and climbing nearly continuously for 60 hours. Twenty-two years later, in the spring of 2022, the Slovak saw another round of single-push ascents, blazing up the route in less than 24 hours. For this episode, AAJ editor Dougald MacDonald spoke with climbers from all three of these ascents: Steve House, Matt Cornell, and Rob Smith. They talked about the progression in climbing gear and tactics that allowed such amazingly fast climbs, but also about universal aspects of challenges like this that have nothing to do with speed records. The Cutting Edge is presented by Hilleberg the Tentmaker (hilleberg.com), with additional support from Lowa Boots, Polartec, and Gnarly Nutrition. This podcast is produced by the American Alpine Club.

Hard, scary trad climbing is all fun and games until someone breaks their back. That's what happened to Molly Mitchell on Crank It, a 5.13+ sport climb in Boulder Canyon that Molly was attempting to headpoint on gear. Nevertheless, Molly sought redemption and returned to the climb years later and ultimately sent it on gear. But what she discovered about her self, and her health, ended up being the real prize of this inspiring journey. But first, the hosts take a closer look at how one of the biggest and hardest routes on Denali got not one but two insane speed records set within a matter of weeks. That would be the Slovak Direct, with Matt Cornell, Jackson Marvell and Alan Rousseau setting the pace at 21 hours, 35 minutes. Then two weeks later, Michael Gardner, Sam Hennessey and Rob Smith came in at 17 hours, 10 minutes. Our final bit is music from an old classic. Show Notes Follow Molly Mitchell on Instagram.
