VIEON is the electronic music project of Matt Wild, based in Coventry, UK. Expanding to a live four-piece including VJ Adrian Brian Thompson, sound engineer Stephen Dorphin and keyboardist Ricardo Autobahn, their sound is inspired by 70s and 80s electronic film soundtracks and lush synthpop filtered through a long-time appreciation for post-rock and IDM. Debut album The Sound of the Future released on Manchester label AnalogueTrash in 2014, soon followed by concept album Fly By Light, dealing with themes of exploration, loss and opportunity; an immediate hit with critics including Emily Oldfield of Louder Than War who described it as “a trip you certainly won't regret taking… powerful music opening up new mind space”. VIEON have raised their profile dramatically in recent years with a series of engaging audio-visual shows in the UK and Europe famed for their dramatic and ambitious scope, including banks of synthesizers, theremin, keytar, live-produced projections, and synchronised light display. These culminated at the end of 2019 in the sold-out Lost Worlds Live shows in Coventry and Manchester. The band is looking forward to 2022 with an expanded live show, new music, and collaborations in the pipeline.

If you've been keeping up on Milwaukee entertainment and culture coverage at any point in the last 15 years or so, you're likely very familiar with the work of Matt Wild. Before co-founding Milwaukee Record with My First Band host Tyler Maas in early 2014, Wild served as the City Editor of Milwaukee's branch of The A.V. Club and got the occasional byline in national publications as well. Prior to earning a reputation as one of the Milwaukee's most talented and unique journalistic voices, Wild was a musician and film student with little-to-no writing aspirations. During Milwaukee Record's recent "14-Hour Socially Distant Telethon," Maas and Wild worked in enough time for a My First Band recording. During the lengthy and open discussion, the co-owners and editors talked about the unlikely start of the business, the ups and downs of Milwaukee Record's first six years and how they're trying to get through the economic uncertainty and difficulty of the COVID-19 crisis. Eventually, Wild got into his 15-year run with his first and only band, Holy Mary Motor Club, which consisted of unforgettable shows in West Bend, an abbreviated tour, some interesting costumes and an opportunity to open for The Arcade Fire. Before episode's end, Wild also talked about what eventually brought him into the realm of writing and both he and Maas talked about where they plan to bring Milwaukee Record post-pandemic. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Holy Mary Motor Club ("Theme To 'L.A. Llama'"). Matt then reads a Milwaukee-related excerpt from Jeff Pearlman's 2016 Brett Favre biography Gunslinger, as Tyler leads an alcoholic excursion through Luxembourg with samples of two Bofferding beers and the brand new (to the U.S.) Ramborn cider. Finally, the guys give a long-overdue review to a record by the mid-'70s Milwaukee soft rock outfit The Movies.

Last week, Milwaukee Record dropped by Cactus Club for another edition of our Book Club. This time around we invited Vinyl Me, Please Senior Editor Andrew Winistorfer and VMP contributor Benjamin Munson to join us for a lively chat about the record subscription club's first book, 100 Albums You Need In Your Collection. Before welcoming the guests of honor, hosts Tyler Maas and Matt Wild commemorated On The Record's 100th episode by discussing some memorable past guests. Then, Winistorfer and Munson came on stage to talk about the process of picking just 100 records, all four of their crossing paths, differences between Madison and Milwaukee, and who Ben thinks the Madison Mallards' recent Chris Farley bobblehead resembles.

Sixteen pizzas entered. Four pizzas advanced. Nobody seemed to give a shit. For reasons we can no longer recall, Milwaukee Record spent three weeks in March pitting locally manufactured pizzas against one another in what we called the Wisconsin Frozen Pizza Tournament. Our "Savory Sixteen" featuring four regions (Taco/Cheeseburger, Deluxe, Cheese, Specialty Sauce) and found three staff members eating and evaluating four pizzas from each region, before advancing one to the Frozen Four. Following close to $110 in grocery charges and innumerable calories consumed, we found our regional winners. For this extra-special episode of "On The Record," staffers Tyler Maas, Matt Wild, and Josh Hoppert relived this regrettably 'Za-dyssey, broke down each regional, chronicled the Frozen Four, and crowned Wisconsin's Best Frozen Pizza live on air.

Back in February, Milwaukee Record's very own Tyler Maas and Josh Hoppert set out on a strange and delightful mission: to use a leap day to visit, and eat at, every George Webb restaurant on planet Earth. That mission would eventually span 29 Webb locations, 23 hours, $226.61 (not including gas or tip), and over 600 miles traveled. Now, nearly a year later, Milwaukee is the proud owner of a new Webb restaurant. Located on Fond du Lac Avenue in the city's Sherman Park neighborhood, the new diner is notable for two reasons: one, because of its location, which was the site of much controversy over the summer, and two, because it makes Tyler and Josh's previous mission sorely incomplete. But never fear, because the two intrepid heroes (and Matt Wild) recently visited the new Webb location, and came back with this thrilling and informative podcast.

For another completely random—though decidedly less slipshod—Facebook Live episode of On The Record, hosts Tyler Maas and Matt Wild set up shop at Bay View's venerable Cactus Club to discuss a whole bunch of shit: the recently wrapped 2016 Milwaukee Film Festival, Saturday's Beet Street Harvest Festival, next week's inaugural Milwaukee Record Beer Club, and spooktacular Halloween shows. Tyler admits to getting teary-eyed during the film fest, Matt discusses his "Halloween mood table," and a mystery viewer/listener (Dori Zori) playfully (?) calls the pair "two jackasses."

For yet another endearingly slipshod Facebook Live episode, hosts Tyler Maas and Matt Wild take a breath, wipe their brows, and recap the first half of Summer 2016. Items discussed include the best Milwaukee albums of the year (so far), Summerfest, Summerfest food, all that flag bullshit, eating at every George Webb in the world, and random soul-crushing experiences. Maas and Wild also take questions from viewers, and, in what makes for thrilling live audio, grapple with nagging technical difficulties.

For this endearingly slipshod episode, hosts Matt Wild and Tyler Maas (that's us) decided to try something a little different and do an "Ask Us Anything" kind of deal via Facebook Live. So yes, as we were recording the audio for this podcast, we were also broadcasting live video on Facebook and taking real-time questions from viewers. Beyond that, summer was our general theme, and we managed to run down some of the Milwaukee summer festivals we're most excited about, discuss the issue of a seemingly small handful of bands playing the bulk of these festivals, and dig into the massive and always divisive Summerfest schedule. Thanks to our viewer questions, we also talked about "Weird Al," how we manage work and personal time, and what constitutes a "Milwaukee 8."

Since 2009, the young professional group NEWaukee has become an ever-present player in Milwaukee's social and cultural scenes. What began as a simple social networking group started by a handful of friends looking to meet their peers and explore their city has become a social architecture firm looking to change the way Milwaukeeans young and old live, work, and play in their city and beyond. The NEWaukee Night Market, an arts and crafts fair that takes over a chunk of W. Wisconsin Ave. for four nights every summer, has become a huge success. The NEWaukee-organized Young Professional Week, a statewide program featuring hundreds of free events, workshops, and panels, kicks off April 23. On top of that (and dozens of other events), NEWaukee has been working with the new ownership group of The Shops of Grand Avenue, offering input and shaping the redevelopment of the long-struggling downtown mall. For this episode of On The Record, Matt Wild dropped by the NEWaukee offices (which, coincidentally, are in the basement of the Grand Ave.) and spoke to NEWaukee president Angela Damiani about the future of the mall, the history of her group, and what, exactly, social architecture means.
