Apple blew all the minds in its annual Worldwide Developers Conference Keynote in San Jose on June 3. Jon and Drew cover the announcements for tvOS, watchOS, iOS, iPadOS (which is a separate thing now!), and macOS, and they save all the heady future-y AR stuff for a second WWDC special. Maybe Apple should have done that for the keynote, too — two and a half hours was a lot! Want to be internet friends? Maybe Apple always intended to update the Mac mini but got distracted by more urgent projects? Maybe Apple was waiting to do something... different with the mini, but it was taking too long? Or maybe Apple never meant to update the mini at all but changed its mind after seeing just how much its customers missed the littlest Mac? I don’t know. But I do know this: After four long, fallow years, Apple has finally updated the Mac mini. So, is this the Mac mini we’ve all been waiting for? Yes and no. It’s not a bold new take of the original switcher or re-imagining of the desktop for the post-Intel world. It’s not even really entry level any more, based on the price, except compared to every other Mac. It may be a placeholder, it could be a resurrection, but it could also be pragmatic. Most Macs sold are notebooks not desktops, and most desktops sold are iMacs not Mac mini’s. So, where does that leave us? SPONSOR: Brilliant Go to http://brilliant.org/vector and sign up for free. Recorded 18th February 2018 This week saw another deadly school shooting in the US and whilst we don't want to dwell on that event we felt it appropriate to just mention our horror and sorrow at another senseless tragedy. Meanwhile we are joined by the esteemed Jeff Gamet, Managing Editor at The Mac Observer and co-host of the Apple Context Machine Podcast to talk about the HomePod, “white-ring gate”, Twitter killing its Mac client and more. On this week's show: APPLE HomePods leaving a white ring on wooden surfaces – The Verge NEVER place anything directly onto polished/waxed/oiled wood surfaces. There is a reason your grandmother insisted on cork backed tablemats and coasters etc and never let you put stuff on her dining table - and it wasn't bloodymindedness! Maybe Apple should have included a warning like “avoid placing HomePod directly into polished/waxed/oiled wood surfaces” because perhaps not everyone has/had grandmothers/mothers like me who drummed that stuff into me from year dot. And it isn't just the HomePod... Back in the saddle again! This week, Aaron and I take a deep dive into the iOS 10 and WatchOS 3 betas. What we like, what we don't, and what we don't like but there is an option that I learn I can change to make things the way I want. Maybe Apple should rethink some defaults, is all I'm saying. It was fun giving some in depth impressions of some of the latest betas, but what I'm really excited about is when all the official releases happen. That's when we'll really be able to leverage the synergies of the platform updates, as well as see all the great app updates that developers have made with the latest APIs. I have a feeling that that's what's really going to knock people's socks off. Binge v1.4 Release Notes Big Red Coq Adam’s Strava
Maybe Apple should have waited a little bit longer to hold another event. John, Lex, and Dan discuss (read: complain about) the latest announcements.
