Shelly Fairchild on Staying in the Queue, Recording at FAME, and Building an Independent CareerOn Curious Goldfish, host Jason English talks with Mississippi-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Shelly Fairchild about persevering through setbacks (“stay in the queue” and “buy the tree”), including losing a major label deal 20 years ago after being outed and forging an independent path since. Fairchild shares why it took a decade to make her new album, how a Kickstarter funded it, and why she recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals with producers Gary Nichols and Greg Beek, describing the studio's historic energy and an accompanying documentary shoot. She compares the new record's themes of home, loss, and identity to earlier albums, discusses songs like “End Up in Austin,” “Missin' Mississippi,” and “Struggle,” and reflects on musical theater roots, touring as a backing vocalist, and writing high-volume sync music for TV/film—including navigating AI demo tools and changing music economics.00:00 Stay in the Queue01:05 Podcast Welcome and Guest Intro01:51 Water Filter Cold Open03:34 Ten Years Between Albums05:16 Why Muscle Shoals and FAME10:26 The Magic of Muscle Shoals12:45 Themes and Storytelling Roots14:56 Finding Her Sound Over Time17:22 End Up in Austin Backstory20:00 More Songs and The Struggle23:11 Musical Theater Origins28:46 Business Lessons from Touring32:01 Stay in the Queue34:32 Whirlwind Tour Lessons35:39 Bus Driver Wakeup Call37:24 Two Decades in a Blur38:08 Making Money with Sync41:14 How Sync Writing Works44:44 AI and Demo Shortcuts47:52 Losing the Deal Coming Out51:00 Authenticity and Activism56:06 Curiosity and Distribution59:49 Tour Dates and Farewell
Israel stood at the edge of a new beginning, but before they could move forward, God called them to remember where they had been. From there God said, “You have stayed long enough at this mountain.” Sometimes the greatest danger is not rebellion, but becoming comfortable where God never intended us to remain. This passage challenges us to remember God's past faithfulness while refusing to settle spiritually.
This week at STUDIO, we welcomed back Nate Edwardson, from The Stirring in Redding, California. He took us into 1 Samuel 16, where God chooses David to be the next king of Israel. At the heart of this story lies a profound truth: before God anoints a new generation, He first heals the spiritual fathers and mothers who will pour into them. The prophet Samuel is stuck in mourning over Saul's failure, unable to move forward until God speaks these transformative words: 'You've mourned long enough.” This passage challenges us to examine whether we're allowing past disappointments to define our future. Nate's talk reminds us that we cannot anoint what God is doing next while we're still standing over yesterday's graves. God is raising up a generation of people after His own heart, but He needs healed, whole, and oil-filled leaders to recognize and release them. The call is clear: it's time to leave the cave of disappointment, become renewed in His Spirit, and position ourselves to see those who God has already prepared in the next generation. For more info, you can go to our website, check us out on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube. “A lesson I wish I learned earlier: you get opportunities by showing up long enough for the right people to find you.”
There's a particular kind of exhaustion that doesn't show up on any medical test and doesn't have a clean solution. It's the exhaustion of someone who has been holding it together for a very long time — through personal difficulty, collective uncertainty, and the relentless pressure to keep performing okayness when you are not, in fact, okay. This episode is about the permission to rest. Not as productivity advice. Not as self-care content. As a genuine psychological and physiological necessity that high-functioning people are especially likely to override — and especially likely to pay for later.Today I'm drawing on research in stress physiology and two decades of coaching to explore why the people who are best at coping are often the last to recognize when they've reached their limit, what the difference is between chosen rest and collapse, and how to stop treating exhaustion as a character flaw long enough to actually recover from it.If you have been quietly running on empty while telling everyone you're fine — if the words "I just need to push through" have become a reflex rather than a choice — this episode is for you. Rest is not a reward for finishing. It is part of how you finish. And it is long overdue.
Send us Fan MailFeeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or burned out trying to grow your business? In this powerful Monday Morning Motivation episode, Anna Steinfest shares an important reminder for entrepreneurs and small business owners: resting is not quitting. We live in a world that glorifies nonstop hustle, constant grinding, and pushing harder every day — but what happens when exhaustion starts stealing your creativity, energy, health, and peace? This episode is for every entrepreneur who feels tired, discouraged, emotionally drained, or ready to give up. Through real talk, encouragement, and powerful storytelling, Anna shares why learning to rest may be one of the most strategic things you can do for your business and your life.Because sometimes the strongest thing you can do is pause… without quitting.
Cory talks about how negotiations to develop the provincial economy are going nowhere. It's time to use the stick.
Keir Starmer is defying his own party, the public, and political gravity. But is he going anywhere? After a humiliating set of local, Welsh, and Scottish election results, the knives are out in the Parliamentary Labour Party. Yet the would-be challengers — Wes Streeting, Angela Rayner, Andy Burnham, Ed Miliband — can't seem to land a blow. Spiked Online's Brendan O'Neill joins Julia to break down why this isn't just a Starmer problem… it's a problem with the entire political class. Then, as King Charles delivers the King's Speech, the verdict is damning: recycled announcements, no serious plan for the economy, nothing on immigration, doubling down on net zero, and dragging the country back towards the EU. Robert Colvile, Director of the Centre for Policy Studies and Sunday Times columnist, digs into the numbers: Britain is borrowing over £100 billion a year, welfare spending now exceeds income tax receipts, and the bond markets don't care who leads the Labour Party… despite some MPs saying that the bond markets will have to ‘fall in line'.The brutal truth? Whoever takes over from Starmer inherits the same in-tray: wars in Ukraine and Iran, an energy crisis, a ballooning welfare bill, an ageing population, and a public that refuses to hear difficult choices. As Colvile puts it: you can change the Prime Minister, but you can't change the bond markets.Julia Hartley Brewer broadcasts on Talk from Monday to Thursday, 10AM to 1PM. Send us Fan MailDr. Allison Lure, neonatologist and clinical informatics fellow, presents findings from a large primary care network spanning over 80 practices in Massachusetts on how term and preterm infants grow longitudinally after discharge. She shares why the standard practice of correcting for gestational age until two years may be sufficient for moderate and late preterm infants but falls short for babies born below 32 weeks — who may need correction extended to three years or beyond to avoid being misclassified as failing to thrive. She also sheds light on the often-overlooked growth trajectories of moderate and late preterm babies, a population rarely captured in NICU follow-up clinics, and explains what her work in clinical informatics is teaching her about how to store, structure, and extract meaningful data from the electronic health record.Support the showAs always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com. We all move through the same world, but we don’t all notice the same things. In this episode, Danielle speaks with visual artist Daniel Arsham about what it actually means to pay attention, and how refining that skill can shape not just your worldview, but your creativity and success. From choosing to live inside a 90-square-foot space in his own studio to building a global career spanning art, fashion, and design, Arsham’s life is a case study in the art of perception. Today, his work sits at the intersection of culture and luxury, collaborating with brands like Dior, Porsche, Tiffany & Co., and Pokémon, with sculptures that sell for millions and exhibitions that draw thousands across multiple continents. This conversation goes beyond aesthetics and into something deeper: how we train ourselves to notice, what we filter out, and how those choices quietly shape what we create, a philosophy he explores further in his new memoir, Future Relic. In this episode, you’ll learn: Daniel’s take on the art of noticing, and how photography first taught him that a camera is not just for documenting the world, but for framing a personal way of seeing it. The idea behind failure as a creative necessity. Why Daniel says success often comes down to being willing to fail longer than most people are comfortable with. How his humble beginnings at his Greenpoint studio became a key lesson in his career. Why Daniel wanted his memoir Future Relic to focus so heavily on process, detours, and setbacks What Daniel considers his clearest public failure, and why most creative disappointments matter far less than they feel like they do in the moment. The story of Daniel building a full-scale cardboard replica of Emmanuel Perrotin’s gallery inside his studio as a way of pitching himself. The changing value of handmade work in an increasingly digital and AI-driven world Daniel’s take on taste, which he says is developed through exposure, travel, and experience, not something you are simply born with. On this episode we revisit a popular debate, but with a few new angles. This is not a typical strength vs cardio conversation, since everyone should obviously do both. Instead we focus on the "optimization" challenge of finding an appropriate balance between the two.Baseline health guidance (both for Americans and globally) calls for 150 minutes of "moderate to vigorous physical activity" weekly, plus two days of muscle strengthening activity. That provides a starting point for minimum activity levels, but what about performance goals? We chat about strength and endurance standards from a few different sources, as well as research on dose response to strength training vs cardio. For the Ranger Regiment data mentioned, the more recent version is no longer available since their human performance page has been deactivated, but here's a link to the older data we discuss.BYU/University of Minnesota study on dose-response association with mortalityHarvard/Iowa State optimum dose studyRand study on ACFT associations with injury risk

Most business owners quit on strategies right before they start working. Success isn't about trying more things—it's about giving the right things enough time.Take this podcast for example: When we started in 2019, hitting 500 episodes seemed impossible. But consistency over time creates compound results that feel sudden but aren't.The Solution:Give strategies minimum 90 days, often 6-12 months before measuring success. Your constraint isn't trying enough things—it's not giving the right things enough time.Your Challenge:What's the one thing you've been wanting to quit on that maybe needs more time?
